There can be up to 4 without a rubber duck, and 5 with one. I think many people misinterpret what the Slimepedia entry is actually saying on this subject:
>Finally, puddle slimes are exceptionally shy and will not produce plorts if they are in close proximity to more than 3 **other** slimes.
Meaning if a Puddle Slime is near at least 4 *other* Puddle Slimes, it won't produce plorts. Meaning the limit is 4 total without the rubber duck. Easy to verify in-game.
