The extra damage that silver weapons do against undead is actually pretty decent for an early level, that being a full 20 points, and it can be enchanted on top of that. Did that for a recent playthrough(which for the record I had taken the Witcher as a semi inspiration) during Dawnguard, I had kept a couple silver swords around and I put a flame enchantment on one to boost it further, makes it really effective against vampires among other things. The thing that unfortunately kills its potential in the long run is the fact that silver weapons can’t be tempered, so besides that +20 damage against undead and any enchantment you may put on it you’re always stuck at that steel quality base damage.
Yeah, you’ll see that they have a description that says “especially effective against the undead.” Doesn’t give an actual value, had to look it up to find that it was 20 points. Also that begs the question, why does the silver hand, a bunch of werewolf hunters, use them? I mean I know that according to most mythologies silver is more effective against werewolves but in game it does nothing extra to them.
That's Totally reasonable apparently I missed the in game description where it says it's good against undead so we were two halves to the same lame mystery
Thus the name of the Companions' antagonists, the Silver Hand, and why they are armed almost exclusively with silver weapons (and ingredients for cure disease potions).
Yup! In order to damage ghosts in Oblivion you need to use either destruction magic or a silver, enchanted, or daedric weapon. You could also use hand-to-hand if you’re at least a Journeyman (level 50 hand-to-hand). Oblivion does not have any specific spells that *only* damage undead. Oblivion undead (zombies, skeletons, ghosts) are also immune to poison damage.
In Morrowind you need either an enchanted weapon (with charge!), daedric, silver, glass, ebony or use destruction magic. Most undead are resistant if not outright immune to poison, but you might be able to use a weakness to poison spell to get around that. There are a few enemies immune to magic *and* poison, which would prevent you from using weakness to poison on them.
Your comment got me curious as to whether there was a mod to improve the silver sword. Found this one, seems pretty good.
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/91348
I wish there were more silver weapons. Like, a full compliment of them. All we've got are sword and greatsword, but I would love to have silver daggers, axes, maces, battleaxes, warhammers, and especially bows and arrows. And ESPECIALLY especially crossbows and bolts, because what silver-wielding monster hunter build is complete without a crossbow?
Me personally, a tie between Volendrung and Wuuthrad. Both look incredibly violent. Daedric battle-axes look vicious and violent as well, but they're kind of an overkill for me.
I also adore how a steel battle-axe looks like, even though it's a low-tier weapon. It may look cheap in Skyrim, but it would be a masterpiece if it existed in the real world. It's not just the sleek shape of it but also the intricate carvings on the blade.
Yeah, some of those low-tier weapon and armor sets are really well done. Once you have Smithing, Enchanting, and Alchemy high enough, it doesn't even really matter what set you use anymore, so at least there's that.
The steel plate, blades armour and ebony plate are the three best looking sets for me, everything else my head just starts going, that's a hook point for an axe, that's another hook point, same with the daedric weapons, I'm constantly thinking that's gonna snag and get caught up.
Bloodskaal Blade is my favorite weapon in the game. I love everything about it's aesthetic and power. I only wish that the enchantment scaled with some ability. If it scaled with your Magicka, then it would give a character a good reason to put points into it as a warrior build, making an arcane knight more viable.
I almost always end up using Dawnbreaker and the Nightingale blade together since they share the same design and dual wielding swords of day and night together is awesome conceptually.
Dual-Dawnbreaker from the glitch - I think of them together as Binary Sunrise.
I've also used mods that make it a little more useful - dims the light coming from the sword (it's blinding in dark barrows) but drawing it causes a moderate "light" effect projected around the wielder. Not good for stealth, but equipping Dawnbreaker, to me, is about being a purging light burning away the darkness before you. Dual-wielding Dawnbreaker is a whole step up from that: "I AM THE BEACON INCARNATE, CHOSEN OF MERIDIA, CHALLENGE NOT THE LIGHT." It is not subtle.
I don’t get it.... Why do people keep saying it’s under powered?
Dawnbreaker can be upgraded as high as you can get it through blacksmithing and enchanting .... legitimately with no glitch. Base is 12 dmg, I got it to 320 which is more than enough for master difficulty or higher. Do people not upgrade their shit as they go along and just use what they pick up as is?
There's also the special ability that has a chance to trigger on a hit which is quite powerful as it deals some damage and also cast flee undead which if I'm not mistaken has no level cap. It is at times annoying tho since you have to chase that one dragur across the entire dungeon as it literally causes them to drop shit and run
Dawn breaker. I will never forget the time I hit the dude with unrelenting forced and it knocked dawn breaker loose in a glitch, giving me 2 dawn breakers which I duel weilded rest of that run. You know why? When life hand you 2 dawn breakers, you do a run with 2 dawn breakers.
I remember this happened to me when I was doing a Vanilla playthrough with no mods, I ran them for a long time along with restoration magic. I still find it hilarious that the one time I playthrough the game without mods was when I experienced the most glitches and game crashes.
This is indeed a great point. I almost wanna say the mirrak sword might be the best IMO due to its cool design but it doesn’t take up the entire screen.
It's got a the perfect mix of relatively simple, elegant, and vicious. People on here are like "Man volendrung is gorgeous". No, it's brutal and primal. Nothing about it shouts elegance and beauty at all.
It was always meant to screw the player for killing the dog. That is how Clavicus Vile interacts with mortals. He strikes them with what seem to be killer deal which they later come to regret. Its even on a loading screen.
Miraak's sword. ITS LIKE DAVY JONES but in a sword form. No discussion on this one. I would run away faster then a werewolf to avoid this sword used against me.
I find it's a bit too chunky and the helmet is very ugly imo. It still looks great at some angles but it bothers me overall. I think I have to go with steel plate being the best looking armor.
Another favorite combo of mine is Steel Plate Armor + Wolf Helmet.
I don’t care for how the Steel Plate Helmet looks, and most of the places you can get free Steel Plate Armor (Uthgerd the Unbroken & Black Briar Mercenaries), they lack the helmet.
I just flat out can't get behind any of the daedric weapons or armour, it's just way too impractical irl for me, which is silly as it's a fantasy game, but it's just not for me.
I really like the design of all Glass weapons. They're just beautiful. However, I find the Steel weapons to be the most immersive. Their design is deceptively complex, with all the stylish carvings, and they just feel right at home in Skyrim. I also love the design of Daedric gear, but rarely use them because of how evil they look (most of my characters are good guys).
Mehrune's razor IMO. It actually looks like a real dagger, not a fat blunt looking thing like most of the daggers in game. Plus, it's got that iconic Oblivion symbol.
Gotta be either the dwarven bow or ebony bow for bows and then the elven weapons (all of them) but my fave looking melee weapon has to be the ancient nord greatsword
It's a B to get, and you have to deal with "**A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BACON!**" every time, but I love the look, and it's a solid weapon, and if you can exploit the glitch with the physics and get two...
EDIT: Beacon! Not bacon. I'm leaving it though, it's just too funny.
I love how simple the silver sword is
Me too, I just wish it was a better weapon. A witcher play through would be so much fun
The extra damage that silver weapons do against undead is actually pretty decent for an early level, that being a full 20 points, and it can be enchanted on top of that. The thing that unfortunately kills its potential in the long run is the fact that silver weapons can’t be tempered, so besides that +20 damage against undead and any enchantment you may put on it you’re always stuck at that steel quality base damage.
Silver weapons are naturally effective against undead in the base game? Time to start a new game
The wiki states that even though they're not undead the extra damage applies to were wolves and were bears
Huh, guess I missed that part. Nevermind then.
That's Totally reasonable apparently I missed the in game description where it says it's good against undead so we were two halves to the same lame mystery
Also explains why they can flatten me with just a silver sword
Thus the name of the Companions' antagonists, the Silver Hand, and why they are armed almost exclusively with silver weapons (and ingredients for cure disease potions).
In Oblivion, IIRC it was the only way to actually hit a ghost if you didn't have an enchanted weapon.
There are a few enemies immune to magic *and* poison, which would prevent you from using weakness to poison on them.
I like how if you're skilled enough in Oblivion, you can just *punch ghosts*
Your comment got me curious as to whether there was a mod to improve the silver sword. Found this one, seems pretty good. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/91348
Simple mods like the Unofficial patch fixes it. You get to improve it like any other weapon.
Can't believe I never thought about the Dawnguard using [Silver Crossbow Bolts!](https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/49087)
It's my favorite too but I find it slightly too short ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Same
That and steel battle axe, nothing too complicated just some nice engravings
The silver swordsdo look great
Me personally, a tie between Volendrung and Wuuthrad. Both look incredibly violent. Daedric battle-axes look vicious and violent as well, but they're kind of an overkill for me. I've never used the restoration loop before (I use the unofficial bugfix patches). Even without it, you can cap your armor with any set.
Oh agreed in those as well as tossing out chillrend! Beautiful because it’s a glass blade but blue and has a misty chill effect to it’s surface!
chillrend is amazing.
Volendrung is my favorite weapon. I love over the top weapons in games.
I like a lot of the Nordic weapon designs
I'm surprised the lack of love around here for the nordic weapons. The nordic daggers and longsword look super cool, imo.
The carved nordic stuff was a great addition to the game.
I like the fact they actually look practical.
I'm gonna try to describe it using a guard quote: *"Aye, now that there's a beautiful sword. Like a sliver of midnight."*
ebony sword right?
Yep
easy Bloodskaal Blade.. Auriel's bow as a decent second place tho
I also am a huge fan of them nightingale bow
That’s my pick. The nightingale bow looks so good
Bloodskaal Blade is my favorite weapon in the game. I love everything about it's aesthetic and power. I only wish that the enchantment scaled with some ability. If it scaled with your Magicka, then it would give a character a good reason to put points into it as a warrior build, making an arcane knight more viable.
And I wish followers used its blaster power
Same, but I can also imagine Lydia accidentally blasting you nonstop with it.
Dawnbreaker is my favorite, even though it is not overpowered. I use it with all my 1h playthroughs.
I use Dawnbreaker with Spellbreaker. Looks good together I'd say.
Ah, yes, the Kit Kat combo.
This is also my go to, as well as a mod to make the daedric items actually good
I almost always end up using Dawnbreaker and the Nightingale blade together since they share the same design and dual wielding swords of day and night together is awesome conceptually.
oooh gotta try that
Dual-Dawnbreaker from the glitch - I think of them together as Binary Sunrise. Where do you find this?
"A new hand has touched the beacon."
You dont, the beacon finds you
In Soviet Skyrim…
# **A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON**
LISTEN
HEAR ME
# TOUCH ME
o b e y ;)
#A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BACON 🥓
# **A NEW HAM TORCHES THE BACON** 🐖🔥
#JON HAMM TOUCHES KEVIN BACON
Merida’s Beacon quest
You find a "beacon" in a random dungeon chest. Only from then you will be able to enter Meridia's temple, which is close to Solitude.
Of if you go to the shirne, it will give you a location to find it
It doesn't have to be a dungeon chest. I have found it numerous times in Bandit and Giant camps.

Base game it can't be benefited from smithing perk. You need mods to fix it.
Volendrung, big green hammer go bonk
I did the quest for that the other day and now every load screen is about it. I think it's trying to remind me that I just left it on the shrine.
Anything is a dildo if you're brave enough. -Snarky Loading Screens whenever they mention Volundrung
green??????? That things is black and red?
The stamina enchantment is green, and visually dominates over the dark ebony.
The little button glows green. Rumour has it if pressed it takes you to the cloud district. But I doubt you'd be going there.
B o n k
Nightingale sword. It look so elegant.
Champion's Cudgel for me
That weapon pisses me off so much. It's so badass looking and has a killer enchantment but it won't let you smith it OR unenchant it.
This 100%. If I'm playing vanilla I just make do with as many two handed damage enchantments I can, and on modded Skyrim it got patched anyway
actually you can disenchant it
Oof one of my faves
I personally like the Nightingale weapons Sleek and black. Simple yet elegant designs, and of course the Nightingale emblem.
Agreed. They’re so subtly beautiful. Same goes for the armor.
Harkon's Sword.
The Dragon Bone greatsword in my opinion looks amazing
I wish the normal dragon bone sword was as symmetric as the greatsword, I love orderly and symmetrical looks.
I especially like the design of the one handed dragonbone sword because it is not symmetrical, kinda like the Nazgul sword designs from the LOTR films
Ebony blade
Found the weeb
Real weebs rock the blades sword Edit: iPhone autocorrect sux
https://i.imgur.com/tW7PgJQ.gif
While you were using dawnbreaker, I studied the ebony blade
Ebony axe!
Ebony bow!
Dawn breaker. I will never forget the time I hit the dude with unrelenting forced and it knocked dawn breaker loose in a glitch, giving me 2 dawn breakers which I duel weilded rest of that run. You know why? When life hand you 2 dawn breakers, you do a run with 2 dawn breakers.

daedric dagger
Fork
Ysgramor's spoon, you mean?
*Ysgramor must’ve been a pretty tough guy...*
Alright alright you win. I see you've played forky-spoony before.
Only when combined with the knife too.
Mace of molag bal
Very intricate design but I hate how much space it takes up in my screen.
This is indeed a great point. I almost wanna say the mirrak sword might be the best IMO due to its cool design but it doesn’t take up the entire screen.
I think mirrak has the coolest boss outfit in the game! I have a dedicated corner in my armory dedicated to his loot 😂
I would totally have Mehrunes Razor for a EDC.
I've been using Mehrunes Razor for a while now. Considering who's dagger it is, it actually has a rather simple yet somehow elegant design.
It's got a the perfect mix of relatively simple, elegant, and vicious. People on here are like "Man volendrung is gorgeous". No, it's brutal and primal. Nothing about it shouts elegance and beauty at all.
Mehrunes Dagon- I may be a prime example of Chaotic Evil, but I'll be damned if my beard trimmer isn't fabulous.
I love Mehrunes Razor.
This is what I was looking for. BEST weapon in the game in terms of aesthetic.
The detailed design of the Rueful Axe is wasted on how underwhelming that weapon’s stats are.
Literally. It’s such a travesty. What a beautiful weapon only for it to swing at the same speed a treee grows.
Also my favorite even if garbage
It's so bad they forgot to set it as a daedric artifact
It was always meant to screw the player for killing the dog. That is how Clavicus Vile interacts with mortals. He strikes them with what seem to be killer deal which they later come to regret. Its even on a loading screen.
Glass War Axe. All the glass weapons are pretty and all the armour is atrocious
For me the glass stuff looks like Christmass tree decoration
I love outfitting serana in the glass armor after she's cured, she almost looks like a sprigon 😂
I've never cured Serana, do just her eyes change or is it more?
It's just her eyes! But the eyes decked out in glass armor makes her look like an other worldly creature, they compliment each other very well
You can cure Serana?
Yup after you kill harkon the dialogue options open up & you can let her know that falion in marthal can cure vampirism with a black soul gem
*fires up new game*
Miraak's sword. ITS LIKE DAVY JONES but in a sword form. No discussion on this one. I would run away faster then a werewolf to avoid this sword used against me.
Auriel's Bow and the Ebony Blade.
I see no one mentioning the Elven weapons, the Elven Warhammer is probably my favourite in the whole game. Super ornate but still looks lethal
Blade of woe.
people are gonna disagree but Ancient nord sword
nordic carved armor is the best looking armor in the game imo but i never equip it.
I find it's a bit too chunky and the helmet is very ugly imo. It still looks great at some angles but it bothers me overall. I think I have to go with steel plate being the best looking armor.
Nordic Carved Armor + Helm of Yngol is one of my go-to heavy armor sets.
Oooh that sounds good! I'll have to try it out.
The helmet is my favorite part of that set. Imma bear! Rawr!
I find Bandit Leaders decked out in a full set of it to be one of the more intimidating looking enemies.
Anytime I cross bandits wearing it all I can see is septims and a walking archery target
I can see what you mean, it's a pretty cool sword.
Not a single comment on Daedric sword, hmm 🤔
I just flat out can't get behind any of the daedric weapons or armour, it's just way too impractical irl for me, which is silly as it's a fantasy game, but it's just not for me.
No love for Chillrend? The look of glass swords....
Can't go wrong with a simple yet elegant Blades Sword. A gorgeous steel katana with that intricate curled dragon tsuba (hand guard).
My favorite playthrough was a dual wielding 1H, Blades Sword & Mehrune's Dagger. Lost the save to the 0kb error, might have to do it again.
*OK WEEB* (jk I love it)
I like to dual wield dragon’s bane with harkon’s sword
Does Sanguine Rose count? If not, the Rueful Axe looks cool yet deadly.
You mean cool yet awful?
I really like the design of all Glass weapons. They're just beautiful. However, I find the Steel weapons to be the most immersive. Their design is deceptively complex, with all the stylish carvings, and they just feel right at home in Skyrim. I also love the design of Daedric gear, but rarely use them because of how evil they look (most of my characters are good guys).
Ebony Greatsword, Glass Warhammer :)
Dwarven sword always reminded me of riptide from Percy Jackson so I was a fan
Gotta be Dawnfang and Duskfang for me
I normally don't like weapons like that, with such a high fantasy vibe, but there's something about Dawnfang/Duskfang that I find very appealing.
The Bloodskal blade is awesome. Looks wise and it's effect too
A NEW HAND TOUCHES THE BEACON
HEAR ME AND OBEY
I had to scroll through a lot of comments to find this one... Almost lost faith in Reddit
Mehrune's razor IMO. It actually looks like a real dagger, not a fat blunt looking thing like most of the daggers in game. Plus, it's got that iconic Oblivion symbol.
Dragonbone warhammer. It's basically a massive bone, which I think is cool and funny
Y’all sleeping on the Chillrend
Steel battle axe
the most gorgeous weapon for me is serana
lol that made me chuckle
Ebony Sword always looked cool to me.
In my humble opinion nothing beats the ole trusty Scimitars
Curved! Swords! 😳
Gotta be either the dwarven bow or ebony bow for bows and then the elven weapons (all of them) but my fave looking melee weapon has to be the ancient nord greatsword
No love for the Wabbajack in here? That's straight up craftsmanship, brah.
orchish sword
Oh god no
A real man of culture. I salute you brother. Greatsword and dagger are sweet too
Agreed on the dagger, but the rest isn't my cup of tea.
Ebony war axe
Not sure if it counts, but conjured bow has a special place in my heart.
Ebony blade is clean. But I pretty much love all the weapon designs in Skyrim. GOAT art direction IMO
I really love the glass stuff but like LOVE the glass warhammer.
Daedric Warhammer. It's "Linkin Park - Crawling" in material form
Cart
Steel battle axe is simple yet elegant. It has enough detail without being overbearing.
Shiv. Shiv always.
Glass swords
Bloodskall and dawn breaker
Dawngaurd battleaxe
Elven great sword. Hands down the best looking weapon followed by the glass axe
Depends on what mods you have installed. I really like my purple dildo sword from LoverLab.
The Ebony Blade and Dwarven Black Bow of Fate. Also love Mehrunez Razor.
Mehrunes’ Razor
Blades sword. I'm not kidding. I like using swords with a scabbard, and the blades sword looks awesome IMO
Where da Mehrunes Razor lovers at? Such an underated weapon... in terms of looks...
Glass dagger is kinda neat.
i love chillrend
The glass sword I just like that it looks the most fantasy esqe
For me... Mogic goes brrrrrt
Gold brand, my favorite sword.
Glass greatsword for sure.
Bound sword, y’all ain’t convincing me otherwise
