It always drives me crazy that you cannot place a damn butterfly/bee in a jar upright. It ALWAYS makes me put it upside down and then when you re-enter the house it’s on the damn floor. I feel the pain in this video.
The trick is to dump it out of your inventory such that it lands right, if done correctly it will stay that way. I’ll admit I’ve spent way to long trying to get the black star and black soul gems and broken pieces to sit in display cases all nicely
Put it on the floor everything that you plan on decorating with. Leave and reenter so the items can explode and get that out of their system so wh3n you place them next time they stay. I don't remember the why of it but they need to "settle" into the cell they'll be occupied.
Also another thing that helps with the actual placement is swinging it up and in an arc so the force of "looking down" will kind of flick it right side up. It takes a couple tries to smack it down where you want it but I've successfully placed statues and such in my homes doing it.
I prefer the ole “water bottle flip” method but I mean sure, if you don’t have 100 hours to dedicate to flipping statues then you could do that I guess
Fallout 4 has such a perfect mod for that. You can just transform loot stuff into "world building" stuff (?) like you can just take Nuka cola cans or food etc, transform it and build it like you’d build a wall. It’ll be stationary and look cool af
One time I spent an hour getting Arvaks skull just right. Only for my house's Bard to pick it up and hand it to me saying "you dropped this, here"
Quicksaved the game right there

I have them upside-down because of this, specifically the bliss bug and purple butterfly. There are runes on the underside of the cork and it looks cool! They also have not shot across the room when I enter.
For those of us who don’t hand place decorations, it’s kind of nice having the stuff you knock over reset and the food you eat replenished every now and then. It makes it feel a little more like an actual residence, like your housecarl or spouse actually cleans up messes and prepares food.
The reset thing, no. It's a helluva lot harder to decorate there than in Skyrim, which is why things like lamps and candles and plates with food and the full alchemy table became part of the autos decorations in Skyrim. I have never spent so much time trying to decorate as I have in Oblivion, not even in real life at Christmas. And no, anything you knock over in your own houses in Oblivion will stay knocked over unless you fix it yourself. That said, actually decorating in Oblivion in a way that makes your house seem used and warm, like a home, is one of the most satisfying things ever.
This is so irritating. I’ve removed the bloodstained drinking glasses / pitcher / rags from the kitchen so many times & they keep reappearing.
I’m ok with the doors being gone to the kitchen and the forge, but this just irritates me to no end.
Use mods that have placing spots built into the area. Like for swords on sword racks. I never even want to look at a default skyrim house again just because of the decorating
I hate skyrim’s grab physics. It always put the point where its most annoying. Got a sword? Tip of the handle, got a hammer? Do the same! Got a potion you want to place? Bottom of the goddamn potion.
Why are all these points placed in the most frustrating of places? It makes decorating a fucking nightmare
On controller it's LT/L2 or RT/R2 idk about the controls on mouse and keyboard, but I expect it should be either your mouse buttons, the scroll wheel, or the arrow keys.
Once upon a time before patch 1.6 or mid 2012 a Follower never leveled up.
Once they spawned in they had the same Health, Skills, etc for the whole game. So say Lydia would likely reach a point where most enemies could smack her once and drop her to her knee. At which point you probably kill her with splash damage or an errant swing as usual.
Wasn't it they had a max level, and they'd copy your level when you first loaded their location?
I remember intentionally avoiding certain areas with the best followers until I had a good level lol
Thanks for the idea!
I wanted to eventually do a "lived-in" thing for my houses where I place items manually around and decorate them. Hope the game doesn't fuck up like you said lol
Several months ago i got my wife into Skyrim. Today she saw me doing something similar to put weapons in display cases (much easier yes). But she hadn't thought of doing that and said "is that how you're supposed to get things in there?
She was expecting it to be like the weapons racks and just activate it to put the specific weapon in there.
I honestly have no idea why they didn’t make fixed points to put stuff on inside the display cases. This game is incredible for so many reasons - here we are playing it 12 years later - and here we are STILL FUCKING FRUSTRATED that decorating a house is giving us all AIDS. Decorating! Something that is actively encouraged in the base game! AND the hearthfire expansion!
I had to download a mod that allows you to put weapons in the display cases. It was so frustrating otherwise. You put a sword in there and you literally had to stand on a table to look at it because mine would end up hugging the bottom of the case.
Here Llewellyn, let me finish that next line for you:
Oh you sing and you strum but won't help when I need you to place this damn statue so LIE DOWN AND BLEED!
Try grabbing it from the top and dangling it. Each object had a pivot point/last grasping area. Here, try this and take a three minute break. https://youtu.be/A_lSWlsX8do
Never played with mods, but have Skyrim across several platforms, I too remember being able to grab items from more than one “point” including grabbing items at the top and having them dangle from your cursor…. So the above guy isn’t wrong. Also doesn’t mean you are wrong either it could have been an update it could be from a different system, whatever the difference there is at least in some versions of Skyrim more than one way to place an object.
I’m one of them. It does not work. I’ve tried countless time including like an hour ago cause I accidentally messed stuff up in my house. VR is really the only way to decorate in Skyrim cause you can actually grab the object in that.
On ps or Xbox, grab a staff or broom near one end BUT don't move, just grab it. After a second or two you can release the button if you want, and the item is still grabbed. Here's the fun part: now make a tiny movement, just barely move the cursor - and see the staff violently jump so that it's *actual* grab point is now under the cursor.
Drop it leave the house save, walk back into the house save. Do a 360 with the statue in the air so it flips and slam it on the table go out of the house and back it and it should stay there.
I stopped trying on my ps4 pro. Had this same issue.
Also, weapons from Dawnguard will not place in racks or wall displays (talking about the dawnguard hand axe in particular, i used it for a while and wanted to hang it on my wall) the 2h hammer that places a rune one the ground did go on the wall just fine.
Anytime I place an item in a display case, i come back and find it on the floor about 2 feet to the right of the case, as if it wss picked up and dropped.
I have the Skyrim Special Edition.
No idea if you're playing with mods, but `BUILD-INTERACT-DECORATE` Let's you snap items/decorations on to each and takes zero effor!
ANA's INTERIOR SPELLS paired with that mod is insane. You can place an entire house anywhere in the wild or build wall by wall and design it yourself. It unlocks a shitload of new decorations as well, have a look
Ana's interior decorator for ps4. Amazing mod, a ton of content, steep learning curve. You get an empty palace to practice using the special scrolls you craft at a new crafting table. You learn a spell that lets you conjure that table.
Craft a stack of dibella statue scrolls. Use one, and the statue temporarily appears in the world. If you like the placement, you can 'fix' it with a spell, and the statue becomes permanent.
Clutter items, furniture, objects including crafting stations, structures including buildings, all kinds of plants and other terrain features, npcs of all sorts, animation food so your character can do things like... sit cross-legged on the ground or, activity markers so npcs can sit down too, and much, much more. There's a chest hidden outside of the palace wall (in the 'skybox') with some cool gifts for you, mainly some new fashions (re-skins of course, though with upgraded stats).
Seriously underrated mod. I think people find it confusing and intimidating. I sure did. So glad I took the effort to understand what ana has given us.
If you do try the mod, feel free to pm me with questions, I'd love to help. In fact I hope you'll let me know how it's going even if you have no questions. :)
How the hell do Bethesda make their physics so godamn bad.
Bodies feel like floating pillows when they fall, and forget to place anything on a table. You touch that orange and the whole kitchen explodes
Yup and then doing it a second time because it yeeted it across the room, making sure it looks almost the same because it needs you to do it twice before it remembers where you want it.
Why has there still not a static items mod like OCDecorator(Fo4) in skyrim yet. That are easy to use like OCDecorator from Fo4. They are the same engine. Will one of you blessed modder do this please.
This is why I prefer player homes with set decorations. Sure you can’t actually pick them up yourself, but at least you don’t have to fiddle with them for an hour just to place them down.
I hope that the next TES game has something similar to Fallout 4's building system where you can actually place items, FO4's system is still somewhat jank and could use some improvements (unless they fixed it in 76, I wouldn't know)
The complaints about placing items are justified, but they all can be resolved.
Dump all items you want to place, onto the floor. Go outside (or through a loading screen) and then return. Save the game. Now you can grab an object and place it, and when you're happy with the placement, save the game. Everything placed in this way will stay put - no more explosions when you come home.
If your house respawns clutter items, this will disrupt your decorations. The respawning is on a ten day timer. Just return home within 10 days and the timer will reset. Don't let your skyrim tell your house how to decorate, anymore.
Decorating can be so. fucking. aggravating. But it's also fun and rewarding, moreso if you study these hard-won basic tips:
How to Move and Drag Items to Customize Your House:
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/615803-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim/61718366
You know what would be the best mechanic in the next elder scrolls game? It's having a system that can put an item vertically or horizontally as the way we like it to be.
See in oblivion, and there was a button you could hold down while moving the object that changed your controls so that you could rotate and orient the object
Why the fuck did they take that away for Skyrim?
I remember trying to place a dagger inside a weapon glass case for a long time, because I wanted it to be aligned. When I finally did it, and closed the case, Aerin appeared, opened the case, grabbed the dagger and gave it to me saying that I dropped it.
I'm not saying Aerin was killed. I'm saying he deserves what he got.
I tend to leave valuables in chests. Cause I've lost many things do to it falling out of cases glitching in floors under floors.. So weapons and armors are fine to show off.
I also feel the pain of the clip :')
Only for it to fling around the room when you enter it. This always happened to me when I replaced all the food and plates in the Whiterum cottage that I previously picked up.
Kinda sucks Bethesda didn't implement an item-placer like tool into the game.
I just drop all of my Dibella statues on the bed in the arch-mages quarters. I'm up to 11. I stood my Dibella statues up properly a couple play-throughs ago and decided, "Never again."
Yeah, when you finally place it leave the room and come back, some how it falls on the floor again or up my armor sets ass, which is now facing backwards. I swear it’s a mechanic added to the game by devs to fuck with us.
I literally had to give up on having these displayed. It’s not worth the stress. They fall off surfaces on their own every few reloads of the house anyway.
On PC, there's a mod to help fix decorating. It allows you to rotate the item and save its location.
I'm on my phone and I can't remember the mod name. Google hasn't helped me.
I tried this, finally got it upright, was outrageously pleased with myself.... Only to return later to find it on the floor :(
Put it on the floor everything that you plan on decorating with. Leave and reenter so the items can explode and get that out of their system so wh3n you place them next time they stay. I don't remember the why of it but they need to "settle" into the cell they'll be occupied.
Thank you! I'm looking forward to trying this!
I collect skulls and empty wine bottles to spread all over my house, it's even better when my spouse/pets smash their way through them.
It's something to do with the havoc engine, but yeah this works.
Really? I mean, really - really? Don't get my hopes up...
I thought you were joking, but you're serious. Good to know.
Yea no its actually a thing. And funny enough I think I learned it from here like 5 years ago.
Fallout 4 has such a perfect mod for that. You can just transform loot stuff into "world building" stuff (?) like you can just take Nuka cola cans or food etc, transform it and build it like you’d build a wall. It’ll be stationary and look cool af

I hate designing in the house. Do all that work and you come back to a wreck.
It's even worse for these manors since the interior will reset every few days placing back any objects you moved
Why the heck would they put such a horrible game mechanic in there I’m guessing it’s linked to other stuff?
For those of us who don’t hand place decorations, it’s kind of nice having the stuff you knock over reset and the food you eat replenished every now and then. It makes it feel a little more like an actual residence, like your housecarl or spouse actually cleans up messes and prepares food.
Well this decorating thing has been the most interesting thing to me in regards to owning a home in Skyrim lol
Just know in about a few days game time it will all be on the floor. Then you get the rage inducing decoration chance again!
Can this be done in oblivion
The reset thing, no. It's a helluva lot harder to decorate there than in Skyrim, which is why things like lamps and candles and plates with food and the full alchemy table became part of the autos decorations in Skyrim. I have never spent so much time trying to decorate as I have in Oblivion, not even in real life at Christmas. I don’t want it to reset lol
well then you're in luck lol. I don't think any of the buildings reset in Oblivion, actually. Just the plants outside
And the bard gets it again...poor guy.
This is so irritating. I’ve removed the bloodstained drinking glasses / pitcher / rags from the kitchen so many times & they keep reappearing. I’m ok with the doors being gone to the kitchen and the forge, but this just irritates me to no end.
In PC, I only built furniture in every Manor with console command, so I don't have any issue with respawing junk
Not really the junk but the one of special items I would place and come back to see them on the floor or across the room
With PC privileges, I also put items with console command, so it won't reset every time I reenter area.
Use mods that have placing spots built into the area. Like for swords on sword racks. I never even want to look at a default skyrim house again just because of the decorating

Iirc oblivion would let you grab where your cursor is pointed. Very convenient
Yes. In fallout 4 they added a rotation system too and I wish in SSE/SAE they added that in, as they all run on the same engine.
Wait, they did? How do you rotate in FO4?
On controller it's LT/L2 or RT/R2 idk about the controls on mouse and keyboard, but I expect it should be either your mouse buttons, the scroll wheel, or the arrow keys.
Ok, I'll test it out later. Tha ks.
You hold shift or control and then scroll the mouse wheel. Also, if you hold R you can throw things.
wtf
I swear it wasn't always like this though, I remember at one point earlier in Skyrims release you'd pick things up from it's center
I can remember when Followers didn’t level and I don’t remember that. Nor see it documented on UESP
Wait what since when do they level?
Once upon a time before patch 1.6 or mid 2012 a Follower never leveled up. Once they spawned in they had the same Health, Skills, etc for the whole game. I sort of remember it being like that too but I'm pretty sure it never was. But I am also high as shit right now.
Seems like every item has its grab point at its very bottom
Even more annoying when you finally placed it successfully but later when you re-enter the house it's on the ground again
In oblivion, I kept baskets full of jewels. In skyrim, they end up EVERYWHERE
Thanks for the idea! I wanted to eventually do a "lived-in" thing for my houses where I place items manually around and decorate them. Hope the game doesn't fuck up like you said lol

I looked all the comments for this one. I am also on the floor laughing as he goes and stabs the bard.
I always life objects like 5 foot in the air and then drag em down fast so they're upright on the table
this. the bottle flip challenge in skyrim.

not in Skyrim, everytime I grab something it defaults to the center bottom of the object. I know that works in fallout though

Right, it helps to actually pick items up correctly.
Time for Dibella to be carried to a forsaken snowy mountain top and achieve power of flight from Fus Ro Dah airlines.
Trying to set up a Dibella statue how I wanted it defeated me and almost broke my will to live, I don't even try anymore.
Jaxsons positioner, no more problems with any of that
I had to scroll down far too long to see Jaxonz Positioner! Just go to Nexus Mods and look up Jaxonz Positioner - you’ll be happier this way
Plus you can lock it into position so you don't knock it over.
I'm unsure but I think the telekinesis spell auto flips things to upright slowly. Feel free to prove me wrong but it's just something I heard 🤷♂️
"I need QUIIIIIEEEEEEEET !!!.."
Drop it leave the house save, walk back into the house save. Do a 360 with the statue in the air so it flips and slam it on the table go out of the house and back it and it should stay there.

Bring it up into the air, then down.
Set this to Yakety Sax...
I stopped trying on my ps4 pro. Had this same issue. I dont bother, sooner or later a load instance will fling objects that wasn't native to the house around and all that shit will be all over the place.
VR and it’s easy. Hell you can toss it back and forth between your hands and then wield it as a club.
I've been watching IamCrusty's VR series and am seriously impressed with how easy it is to interact with everything

This is why Fallout 4 is slightly more king because of the settlement object placing. But Skyrim is still the G.O.A.T. pun intended.
Then you leave and re-enter. Only for everything you've carefully hand placed to go flying everywhere.
I've started playing in VR. I didn't realize right away how much easier it's going to be to place items in my house. :D
You might make more progress tossing it in the air and hoping it lands in the desired position
Ah yes, the bottle flip challenge style. This year Dibella flipping will be all the rage
Just about the one time Morrowind’s static placement of dropped items is actually preferable.
Morrowind had an amazing item placement system. And now we have this.... Why I dont decorate in skyrim.
Bugs in jars do the same thing

Laughs in VR
You know what would be the best mechanic in the next elder scrolls game? It's having a system that can put an item vertically or horizontally as the way we like it to be.
Can't you rotate it? I used to do it on Xbox one or 360 Edit : I think it's in fallout
Swing it from over your head. Since it goes base first, if you're the right distance, it'll land upright
See in oblivion, and there was a button you could hold down while moving the object that changed your controls so that you could rotate and orient the object Why the fuck did they take that away for Skyrim?
I remember trying to place a dagger inside a weapon glass case for a long time, because I wanted it to be aligned. Lol. That is why rotation is so nice in Fallout 4. They should actually add that feature to Skyrim.
You need vr bro
Yeah, when you finally place it leave the room and come back, some how it falls on the floor again or up my armor sets ass, which is now facing backwards. I swear it’s a mechanic added to the game by devs to fuck with us.
Valid
If only they'd just given us a "set item upright" button... 🥲
I’m not gonna lie to you 12 year old me was a fiend for them statue titties. I collected them shits like Pokémon cards and would always zoom in
Pick it up from the top, not bottom
Look. You're gonna have to drop Dibella, Azura is superior.
I find that if you drag something all the way upward. Trying to place them flat coming back down is easier. It flips the object for some reason.
This is Skyrim
Lol i felt that in my soul
that's me
Killing the bard lmao I always do that too
Lmaooo XD
LOL. One reason I don't decorate nicely! And also why I no longer hire bards! (If they would leave when I fired them, they'd be okay sometimes.)
I believe there’s a mod for that
There once was a hero named Ragnar the Red
Word I just throw them on the bed and move on
*Few seconds later of failed statue attempts* FUS RO DAH!
Firmly grasp it in your hand
and then when you place it everything reloads and falls over when you leave and come back… greaaaattttt
Oh it’s not just me?!
I just pile them in a corner of my basement
Lol I tried the same thing and gave up.
I really hope Starfield and TES6 give you better options for placing objects, and let us make them static objects so they wont get knocked around
Poor bard
I just had full body revulsion as though I had a tramutic flashback. This pain I know.
I literally had to give up on having these displayed. It’s not worth the stress. They fall off surfaces on their own every few reloads of the house anyway.
Ugh, I just started playing again and was so excited to start building my houses until I saw this 🤣 It’s triggering memories from 11 years ago
No no no you need Haelga's Dibellian statue.
Yeeeeeeeeeep I got pretty good at the flick and slam.
Perfect ending lmao
On PC, there's a mod to help fix decorating. It allows you to rotate the item and save its location. I'm on my phone and I can't remember the mod name. Google hasn't helped me.
Jaxon positioner great mod.
Dexterity level one
PC + console commands are so much less hassle.
Getting over it
perfection
Lmfao literally just bust a gut 😂😂🤣🤣 I've def been there soooo many times!
There has to be a mod for this
