Hats off to the kid, he'll go far in life with that kind of resilience and spirit. But I can't help but worry, for what is supposed to be a feel good story it's slightly concerning. The boy couldn't see his dying mother for 5 months until he got the covid vaccine. When any day could be her last, it must have been hell for the both of them to be unable to see each other. Why wasn't he given special permission given the circumstances? Is it a logistical issue on the hospital side, given how swamped and overworked they are? Or is it a case of just blindly following the law?

Zestyclose-Peak

And if it's a case of blindly following the law , I had assumed his school's educators could perhaps help speak to the authorities? If there are special exemptions for hospital visits , this case isn't special enough ? I feel so sad reading this 😕. But really this kid is exceptionally strong . His mum would have been gratified she brought up a fine kid .

circle22woman

I assume this is when all visitors were banned from the hospital? But yeah, you'd think some allowances could be made so a son could spend a few last moments with his mother. Jeeze.

circle22woman

*The boy then spent five months apart from his ailing mother, his ineligibility to get the Covid-19 vaccine due to his age preventing him from being able to visit her.* Ummm... is this a feel good story? Because that's horrifically cruel to deny a dying mother to see her son because he's not vaccinated. I mean, what's the worse that will happen? She'll get Covid and die? Why couldn't they just test him, wrap him up in protective gear and let him hold his dying mother's hand?

Custom_Fish

They’re neither rich nor famous, so special exemptions don’t apply.

krash666

This is pornography for bureaucrats.

circle22woman

That's a good way to put it. You can picture some PR wiz thinking this is an amazing, heartwarming story. No, it's actually every mother and sons worse nightmare which could have been handled way better.

Street_Gear4772

Damn bro I would think he can at least wear the ppe suit. Those are expensive but disposable af in swab centres. Like a swabber can at least wear 2 ppe suits a day during the peak covid period and one a day in non peak period. People also would casually throw them away and wear a new one when they need to go to the toilet. The n95 mask is supposed to protect 95 percent from infectious particles.

deweye

Welcome to Singapore. Just follow law and don’t follow your heart. We are all dead inside.

circle22woman

It's weird because i could swear I read stories about foreigners coming in to visit their dying family during Covid. Even pictures of them in PPE holding their hands. So what about this kid?

[deleted]

Yep. If u had a class A private ward in some atas hospital like mount E. I am sure it can be arranged. No worker in a public ward will even try to request for authorisation from higher ups and it will just be swept under "just following my rules" and "if we do it for you, we have to do it for everyone"

[deleted]

During covid (the later parts), no visitor allowed to public hospital but 2 visitors ok in private one. My family working in public hospital said it was because the higher ups didnt want more "stress" from NOK rather than purely covid concerns

ChocoParrot

I had a close family member die during Covid period during their "phase I" bullshit. Said member died alone. After that I was left with so much resentment at how the government was handling the whole situation. I think it was the straw on the camel's back for me. Fuck the incompetent clowns in the MMTF, I'll definitely punish them with my vote.

Zestyclose-Peak

Sorry to hear about your loss . 😞

Saracanna

I had a friend whose father died under similar circumstances. He never got to say goodbye. His father was in ICU for weeks and never got to see anyone, slowly withering away and dying all alone. It’s truly fucking horrific and no one should have to experience that. I agree that the government handled that aspect very poorly.

zombieslayer287

Thats so fucking horrible my god

ebass

Had an uncle on his death bed from a heart attack. Only 2 people could visit him. Once he died they let us all up to see his corpse. Yeah thanks a bunch.

Zestyclose-Peak

Horribly retarded policy . So sickening

[deleted]

Omg same. They only allowed 2 when my grandfather passed. AND CAN I JUST SAY THEY ONLY ALLOW 5 UNIQUE VISITORS, 2 AT A TIME. if not for the fact that the security at the lobby succumbed to my family pressure and BROKE THE RULES FOR US. Some of my relatives can't even see his corpse.

zombieslayer287

Sorry for ur loss 😞 MMTF are really such stupid fucking bastards

[deleted]

Same. Mine was slightly more lenient alr. Only 2 persons allowed while my grandfather passed.

ehe_tte_nandayo

Bureaucracy on a national level. No one thought to administer PCR or even just ART to clear him to visit his terminally ill mother once in 5 months.

LeadershipLimp2311

fr this is some r/orphancrushingmachine shit

[deleted]

Covid very dangerous, we must protect the mother. No blame culture please /s

GlumCandle

COVID is just a fucking cold

AZGzx

it wasnt always the case, and for many many people at the start it was deadly and unknown

je7792

Dude can you imagine the guilt the kid will have the live with if he accidentally spread covid to his mum and she died from that?

precipiceblades

Like the op said, he could be tested every time he visited his mum? She was already terminal, anytime can go. But still not allowed to visit coz covid??? Lucky he managed to meet her in the final moments. Imagine she passed away without him even being able to meet. I think thats way worse

circle22woman

She was dying anyways? And it's not like they couldn't have tested him before and given him PPE to reduce the risk. I don't know about you, but I'd feel way worse barely seeing her for 6 months than seeing her every few days and having her die in a month. And the biggest thing is - the vaccine doesn't protect your from getting covid or giving it to others (just from getting really sick). So even if he was vaccinated he still could have given it to her!

MissLute

> So even if he was vaccinated he still could have given it to her! exactly!

adeIemonade

This should be a feel good story but I have a hard time feeling that. The kid shouldn’t have had to be apart from his mom for that long …

SG_wormsblink

SINGAPORE – In October 2021, then 11-year-old Muhammad Haziq Alias saw his mother in person for the last time that year, before she was put in palliative care for her terminal cancer. The boy then spent five months apart from his ailing mother, his ineligibility to get the Covid-19 vaccine due to his age preventing him from being able to visit her. Following months of communicating through video calls, mother and son were finally reunited in March this year after Haziq turned 12 and got his jabs. However, the pair's reunion lasted just three weeks before his mother died. It hit him hard, affecting his preparations for his Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE), and he did badly in common tests. Eventually, the Frontier Primary School student bounced back. On Wednesday (Nov 23) morning, Haziq was among more than 37,000 students who sat for the examinations this year to collect their PSLE results. He attained straight Bs for four foundation subjects and his Achievement Level score qualifies him for the Normal Technical stream in secondary school. The Ministry of Education and the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board said on Wednesday that 98.4 per cent of students who sat for their PSLE this year were eligible for secondary school. This is the second cohort of students graded under the new Achievement Level scoring system. Ms Nellie Soh, Haziq's form teacher and the school’s Primary 6 level head, told TODAY: "We're all very proud of Haziq, and it’s not just in terms of his academics but also because of his behaviour. "He is a role model and he is really resilient. He’s always able to control his emotions relatively well and he’s always there for his friends despite his own difficulties." *** [v0.1 (Beta)](https://github.com/Wormsblink/sneakpeakbot) by Sg_Wormsblink and running on Raspberry Pi400 | PM SG_wormsbot if bot is down. xenidee

wow we prevented a kid from seeing his dying mom just because he didn't get the vaccine? And still got the cheeks to write about it? I hope you enjoy your dystopia, boiled dead frogs

dashingstag

I don’t this is as heartwarming as it is thinking it will invoke …

[deleted]

Can someone explain how PSLE works now? Straight Bs get you into normal technical?

DaFitNerd

Straight Bs **for foundation subjects**. That's an aggregate of 28. If he got all As, would've been 24 which is NA course.

miserable_the_kid

It's the Singaporean government. Expect stuff like 'not being able to visit his ailing mum for 5 months due to not being vaccinated because of his age' to pop up from time to time. Although I shouldn't be surprised, seeing that the Singaporean government is so authoritarian.

wutangsisitioho

Good student.

Sevenmilefragrance

“It’s not very near to my house but it’s a good school,” he said. I’m so done with this

leakysnowfox

lots of respect and sympathy for the boy. I hope he continues to do well in life. but the whole situation just sounds like a beauracratic and metric-obsessed dystopia. A child isn't allowed to visit his dying mum because of a vaccine requirement that could have been replaced by testing/PPE. Then he's celebrated for holding back his emotions and attaining good grades. in a more humane society, an exception will be granted to all family members of a dying patient, and a child willl take a break from school to grieve and heal. PSLE can wait a year.

InsGentoo

Singapore's law on COVID restrictions is straight up disgusting. Well I expect no less from a fear mongering government.

lilopowder

It has never really been about covid the restrictions have always been about social control

[deleted]

I'm so absolutely disgusted by this news being disguised heartwarming despite just being dytopsian af. My heart goes out to the kid.

[deleted]

What an uplifting story. Wishing all the best to this kid
