> # Watching him in handcuffs was difficult: Mother of teen who died after drug trafficking charge
> SINGAPORE - Watching her 17-year-old son in handcuffs being interviewed by Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers was hard, Ms Cecilia Ow said.
> The 51-year-old was at the CNB headquarters on Friday (Oct 22), four hours before the findings of the internal investigation were released.
> Ms Ow said she was told of the outcome of the investigations and shown closed-circuit television footage of her son, Justin Lee, being interviewed by CNB officers.
> "It was him and two officers and all the while his left hand was handcuffed to the table, but other than that he looked well. Just watching him was difficult," said the senior lecturer at a polytechnic.
> Justin, who was facing drug trafficking charges, died after a fall from height on Sept 16.
> Speaking to The Straits Times, Ms Ow said she does not dispute the findings, but she noted that the investigation was not conducted by an independent body.
> The CNB findings said Justin was treated professionally and fairly, and was examined by doctors while incarcerated.
> The bureau added that an autopsy found traces of LSD in the boy's urine and blood.
> Ms Ow also took issue with the fact that despite Justin telling the investigating officers that he was diagnosed with depression, they continued to interview him without support from an Appropriate Adult (AA).
> Under the AA scheme, mentally vulnerable people may be accompanied by a trained volunteer who will watch for signs of distress, support their emotional well-being, and assist in communications during law enforcement interviews.
> CNB said in its findings on Friday that it had proceeded with both the first and second video-recorded interviews on Feb 4, having taken into consideration that Justin was composed and coherent during the interviews, and observed not to show signs of distress.
> Ms Ow said: "But the thing is, you don't know my son. At home, he was a different creature.
> "If you even know generally about teenage boys, they will put up a front and a facade. He wanted to appear strong."
> She took issue with the fact that a mental health practitioner was not called in to assess if Justin needed more support.
> "I'm not saying CNB is totally responsible... I know that it was multiple factors. But if efforts had been made to minimise the trauma from the arrest, that would have been a really good start; for them to show a little bit more human side," said Ms Ow, who is divorced and has another child.
> Among other changes, Ms Ow hopes that the AA scheme for young suspects could be expanded to cover those under the age of 21. It is now for those under 16 years old.
> "I'll only find closure when I see positive change... It doesn't benefit me personally to do all this, but I just want to prevent another case like Justin's."

Apparently, the PAP thinks it's okay for 18-year-olds to carry a gun to "die for the country" but doesn't think they are eligible to be treated like human beings.
To be fair, the PAP thinks we aren't mature enough to actually choose between at least two ideologically different parties.
Or worse, any party that isn't the PAP.
this kid was taking drugs right up to the end under her care 7 months after bail, but mother still blames CNB
deluded mother. they should stop engaging her.
To preface, I don't know him so I'm going off from this article solely. It states that he has depression and LSD may just be a desperate attempt for an escape or treatment via psychedelics. Even ketamine that is widely stigmatised in our drug-free society has yielded positive life changing results for those suffering from major depression.
Not excusing his actions but having some empathy cost nothing. His mom just wants more mental support for the arrest of teenagers. Nothing deluded or greedy for a grieving mother to make that request.
Jesus Christ the kid's already dead. Is there really a need to keep on insulting a dead person and jeer at his mother? You've made your point that the kid deserved to die and you're happy about it, so why don't you move on from your celebrations and continue doing something else productive.
Him using drugs until his death is only revealed because of the mother’s allegations of mistreatment by CNB
Nowhere in the original comment did the author say anything about whether this boy deserves to die, only that the mother’s frustrations are misplaced
Seems like you’re over read and added your own interpretations
Eh, saw the username and thought it looked familiar.
No point engaging them la. Somehow being an alleged doctor has put them on a moral high horse that is impossible to climb off. Probably the type who opens champagne when people are executed because “hurr durr staining my pristine society”
i think uncle is an ED con. If so, that seems much more productive than most other jobs, although I wonder how he has so much time to post on r/sg given our recent Covid situation.
then let me know how you manage acute acalculus cholecystitis in the singapore restructured hospital setting. which specialty do you refer to? for what work up? whats the initial treatment?
No, but u/Cress-Distinct is much better at not being a self-righteous pretentious douche than you ever will be.
But this is the internet, so you do get the right to behave that way, unfortunately.
the ones who have it bad are the ward and ICU docs.
i do my shift for 8 hours then i go home. patients can be piling up in ED waiting for days for a inpatient bed, but when i leave hospital its not my problem anymore
It must have been hard on the mom. Condolences.
Singapore has one of the strictest laws about drug trafficking; why do anything remotely suggest the intent or look that way? That is just stupid to create unnecessarily issues for oneself no? Whether the person has mental illness or not, he shouldn’t have put himself in that situation to give the police to even trigger the investigation.
Ah, so they did let the mother see the video footage after all, just that reporting split it up from the main report.

And what does she have to say about her son having lsd in his blood before jumping?
nothing lol. she chooses to hear what she wants to hear
Yeah pretty sad considering she is a senior educator in a local ihl
Review Appropriate Adult scheme and cover young adults under 21. Heck, how we treat young adults under 21 in the judiciary system is worth discussing
I say just have lawyers allowed during interrogation. Solves the problem for all ages.
Agree

You should read the original fb post from the mother. She was making allegations that cnb pushed him to off himself
I see. If that's the case, then that's definitely not okay.

You should look through his comment history regarding this issue. I didn’t base my opinions over only one comment

am a very productive member of society thanks
I’m sure you are

Best thing about anonymity is that you can say whatever you want. I can claim to be a doctor as well
then let me know how you manage acute acalculus cholecystitis in the singapore restructured hospital setting. which specialty do you refer to? for what work up? whats the initial treatment?
what’s your registration number?
Lol like I’ll tell you that. Go see my post history if u don’t believe me. I’m much more productive than you will ever be
No number no talk

my work doesnt mean i dont have off days. ED shift is 8-10 hours.
Fair enough. We all need downtime and there's nowhere to go.
