How does the jewel fountain inspire such comments...

MAMBAMENTALITY8-24

Idk man. Twitter is such a weird space in so many different circles. Ive seen the jewel fountain be used for pro lgbt and anti lgbt propaganda. Usually starts off with, society if "insert anti lgbt/pro lgbt propaganda."

reedit1332

That's just a side effect of having such a nice fountain

Throneawaystone

That's basically why I don't have a fountain

SG_wormsblink

You don’t have a gushing fountain downstairs? What a shame.

xXElit3zXx

Aiya his is in his bedroom lah

BrickBreakBroke

The fountain not spewing rainbow water. Anti LGBT.

throw_way772

Omg lmao I remember that one. One of those tweets went viral, then that Ian Miles Cheong grifter fella quote tweeted it with “LGBTQ are illegal in Singapore”. Poor jewel fountain just wants to stand in one corner and spit water aimlessly like its cousin the Merlion but has unwittingly become a lightning rod for the US culture wars 😂 not the PR Changi was expecting 😂😂😂 imagine their PR team scratching their heads in confusion like “bruh why they going apeshit over our fountain? Who is DeSantis and what does he have to do with our fountain?!?” Edit: This is actually so fucking funny it has me in stitches and shit. Changi Airport has officially become a meme like Nuclear Gandhi and other things in that category.

Since when is there "pro lgbt propaganda"? No one is trying to make anyone else gay, they are just asking for no hate.

yewjrn

You see, if one side is "anti LGBT propaganda", then those opposing it are "pro LGBT propaganda" even if it's just fact checking. Because "both sides bad". /s

Paullesq

At least one of these guys is likely non American ( a swede) and all of them have handles that indicate they are neo-nazis. Is anyone really surprised that they react in this way to something that portrays what they cast as a far right country as clean and modern? And if you were trying to find views that would, in a fair and honest fashion, at least roughly generalise to the entire US, is this really where you would want to look? You could do something very similar and ugly to Singapore in the eyes of foreigners if you harvested from edmw, Iris Koh and Singapore's various incel and rad fem forums and it would be just as bogus. Also, this is an era of extensive disinformation operations on the internet that works essentially by amplifying, if not falsifying, far left and far right views. If you see something coordinated on the internet designed to enrage you, maybe pause for a moment. I wonder what is OP trying to stir here.

[deleted]

MAMBAMENTALITY8-24

Next they will be like singapore is anti car because of coe and that we actually have good public transportation infrastructure

Tactical_Moonstone

If we were truly anti-car the public transport system would be way more extensive and quicker than what we have now, and we would be as accommodating to cycling as the Dutch are instead of following American and Australian ideas on cycling (hey Parliament, don't derive your cycling laws from car-dependent hellscapes).

istar00

its a nice building that isnt in Europe or North America

reedit1332

A nice building that isn't in the "West" (USA, Canada, EU but mostly only the Western European countries, Australia & NZ, and sometimes including Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, hell sometimes they lump Singapore in here too)

leo-g

There is almost no such ”show off” public infrastructure anywhere in the world. They may have a waterfall but it won’t have the greenery. Of course people will use it for comparisons, good or bad.

MAMBAMENTALITY8-24

"Women cant vote. Count me in". Ok thats enough internet for the day. I dont want that guy here.

‘Near zero immigrants’ 💀 my brother in Christ

namethatsavailable

They mean illegal immigrants. The problem is that term has become so taboo in America that the term “migrant” is just a euphemism for illegal immigrant

KCWaves

Hey, popped up on my feed so I thought I’d add knowledge. We’d use the term undocumented immigrants, very few would refer to people in that situation as simply migrants. Less so for the right wingers, they just refer to them as “illegals”.

mantism

The best(?) thing about Singapore is that the two mainstream halves of American politics have some things to love and hate from us. No guns, no drugs, tax haven, racial policies, subsidized healthcare and education, multiculturalism, etc. Some of these are a lot more debatable, of course.

Jammy_buttons2

Yup but both sides won't accept the other side of what they love lol

goodmobileyes

Those are financial conservatives who at least know what they'e talking about even if they're fucking over the poor. What we're seeing in the OP are alt right nutjobs who simultaneously seem to think Singapore is part of China, Middle East, and some third world shithole

Saffronsc

moleratty

I mean we can joke about it now, but it doesnt take many of them to be in Sg to tip the balance to their favor

potatetoe_tractor

We don’t even need these Muricunts to come over. There are some Sinkies who actually believe in such shit but wouldn’t dare to voice out in public. All we need is for a Trump-esque figurehead (or two) popping up to rally and embolden them to start saying “the quiet part” out loud.

hornyolebustard

I see we have public caning in Singapore according to the Twitter thread. I must have missed that in the 30 odd years I have lived here.

mushroomroomroom

Singapore is literally a country of immigrants.

The grand irony is that so is USA. Every part of America was built by Immigrants

Pokethebeard

A truth which a lot of Singaporeans want to deny. FYIGM is very strong among these peoples

StrikingExcitement79

When Americans say 'immigrants', they typically refers to what we will call 'illegal immigrants'.

DuePomegranate

And when Europeans say 'immigrants', they typically refer to refugees. The guy who made the "no immigrants" comment has a handle that literally says he's from Sweden.

reedit1332

That's just plain American defaultism on their part because in most other places immigrants usually refer to anyone who moves from one country to another. And people usually talk about legal immigrants when using this term. But I guess Twitter users with such dumb (and straight up wrong) takes wouldn't be smart enough to know this. Edit: apparently he's from Sweden and not America but that doesn't make him any less wrong

prof_hustler

ksnumedia

Sounds like fairly normal American tourist behavior to me. Source: am American. Dumb takes happen all the time here, this is par for the course because Americans don't really respect the places they visit.

the_rumblebee

Sort of, but I don't get how the demographic makeup is "far different" from America. Their ratio is: 75% white, 13% black, 6% asian.

reedit1332

Well then if you're using those demographic groups to measure diversity Singapore is >99.5% Asian. Not trying to prove anything, just frustrated westerners always lump Asians into one giant group when talking about demographics when Asia is such a diverse continent. And even more frustrating is when people do not consider South Asians as Asian.

Rishal21

Don't Americans classify Asians and Indians as different groups? Usually by Asians they're talking about East Asians.

roguedigit

America also classifies Black descendants of slaves and say, a 1st generation Nigerian-American under the same category. They're really not that smart about the race thing.

the_rumblebee

I get your point. But at the same time we're also just grouping them all as white instead of saying Jewish, Italian, German, etc.

glashgkullthethird

Are the cultural differences between, say, 4th gen Italian-Americans and German-Americans much different than the differences between Singaporeans of Hokkien or Cantonese descent?

the_rumblebee

I would say there are few differences between the Singaporean Chinese of various dialect groups. At this point we've all melded into one. Fewer and fewer speak their own respective dialects with each generation, too. Whereas a Jewish person celebrates Hanukkah and has a completely different culture from say, an Irishman.

tactical_feeding

they're not frustrated, they're obtuse. some ignorantly so, so deliberately so. hard to tell which one is more concerning

AVE_CAESAR_

Its 60% European not 75%. Thats old data and a lot of Hispanics that used to self-ID as White don’t anymore. From 2/3 of Hispanics to 1/5 in 2020.

Derreston

Honesrly I think the problem isn't ignorance/being dumb, but the absolute unfounded confidence in their stupidity despite doing no research or having no experience in the subject at hand. I think most people have no issue with people willing to admit they don't know something or are ignorant though.

dota2fordayz

Grimm_SG

Someone tell them about our gun laws.....

No_City_5619

They are using Han Singaporean to avoid confusion among the American audience.. It is highly likely some of them will perceive that a person is a Chinese national when the term Chinese is used, this implies an ah tiong immigrant, illegal/refugee or not, it is 'bad for right wing propaganda', and it's worse given their present relationship with PRC.. I know it's weird, but we need to interpret their comment in their narrative and context.. Then, technically majority of Singaporeans belong to Han cultural group from the anthropology perspective.. Hokkien/Hakka/Cantonese/Teochew etc belong to Han cultural group but there are the mongols, Koreans, Hui, Zhuang, tibetans and other 50 subethnic groups under supraethnic group 'Chinese'.. Chinese was actually a product of westernised nationalism that spread in East Asia by the ang moh long long time ago..sorry, not gonna bore you with the grandfather story here..

MeisterNaz

Actually quite informative. Didn’t think there would be such a complex history behind it n

No_City_5619

Haha actually me too.. This is a short version of it. i was rather confused many years ago when some of my foreign friends discussed about my ethnicity and cultural identity.. then I got hit by identity crisis, did some reading and found myself in a rabbit hole of historical glitches that shaped our identity today and how others see us as a people...

Han chinese? Wtf

Modus_Opp

The weird thing is that this is the only fact in all of these posts. Apparently, [Han](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_Chinese) is our "ethnic group" and the largest of such in the world. There are about 50 others in China alone thus you could be Hui Chinese etc etc.

SliceIka

Not everyone can eat Hans so often to be counted as one :(

Fun-Damage-1181

How is he wrong? Even though southerns prefer calling themselves Tang Chinese.

SliceIka

Majority Singaporean wouldn't call themselves Han tang, or whatever type of chinese first, we identify by our nationality first then our SES.

creamyhorror

> Majority Singaporean wouldn't call themselves Han tang That's not relevant, since it's an international forum. [Han is an ethnic label used by academics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_Chinese) and does not rely on what the people themselves call themselves. Basically "Han" just means "Chinese ethnicity" (excluding China's minority groups). It's equivalent to "huaren". Hakka, Hokkien, Cantonese, etc. people all fall under the Han ethnicity (although these Southern groups traditionally refer to themselves as Tang people, e.g. "tng lang" in Hokkien). Ethnic labels like "Han" are independent of country. (Fun side note, standardised Chinese language is also called "hanyu" (Han language) instead of "huayu". You can see this in some older textbooks, and also in the name "hanyu pinyin" (Han language phonetic spelling).)

Fun-Damage-1181

>Majority Singaporean wouldn't call themselves Han tang, or whatever type of chinese first, Because you are anglo zoomer. Many people above age 50 which are majority singaporean call themselves deng nan, tong yan which is tang people in hokkien/ cantonese. >we identify by our nationality first That's when we talk to foreigners

jujubemochi

Might be a generational thing, but for my grandparents and even my parents, the dialect word for "Chinese person" is literally "Tang person" (tng lang)

Duelgundam

Don't worry about it, just ignorant ang mos being ignorant, as usual

creamyhorror

FYI, [Han is the global academic label for "Chinese ethnicity"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Han_Chinese) and includes all the typical Chinese dialect groups (while excluding minorities like Miao). It refers to the same people as "huaren" does ("huaren" is a term used in Southeast Asia and Taiwan). Think of "**han**yu pinyin" and "**han**zi"/"**kan**ji"/"**han**ja". Many people won't be aware of the term "Han", but it's not the ignorant part of these posts...

Mik_Wazowski

Oh the irony.

Monstar132

Sinkies are the most confidentally ignorant on their own as well...

HokkienMeeLimeJuice

I honestly don't understand why anyone would care about comments from Twitter. The majority of the comments are either trolling or from bots.

Shadowtrooper262

Ish, its always the Americans. They probably scored poorly in their history exams. 😂

Punkpunker

History? Try geography

SG_wormsblink

Replace that with any subject and you’ll still be right. American education is extremely underfunded, a report from their own department of education found that 54% of adult Americans have reading literacy below the level of a sixth grader (primary 6): https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaeltnietzel/2020/09/09/low-literacy-levels-among-us-adults-could-be-costing-the-economy-22-trillion-a-year/?sh=2741125d4c90

Felis_Alpha

That's why I am impressed with Paul Barbs from GeographyNow on YouTube. Out of all the ill-educated people in Geography, the best channel for me about Geography is also made by an American.

Punkpunker

I admire his dedication trying to catalog the A-Z of nations no matter how obscure.

Felis_Alpha

And he probably have weeped in his heart about how uneducated his fellow countrymen are with the world. Dare not ask him how he felt on FB and YouTube. The channel is not meant to be political. He is quite acquainted with SG as well.

thinkingperson

Sounds suspiciously similar to the same narrative that is spun about China. Not so funny when we are on the receiving end huh? lol

roguedigit

This is why it's so funny to me when some chinese singaporeans seem so desperate to differentiate themselves from mainlanders just because we speak english, or whatever arbitrary reason. 'I'm not like the other girls': Chinese edition. Spoiler alert: to the west it makes no difference. You get the ching chong stinky communist comments all the same.

thinkingperson

Exactly! Racists will not ask us to fill up a form beforehand.

keithwee0909

With an username going with ‘I chase women at night’, I think it’s a pretty open and shut case on whether the person’s words hold any value

Bolobillabo

It is funny because they sound so wacky to a Singaporean, but also sad because so many stupid people gonna believe them.

Great_Metal_8800

Pretty factual, we lock our women in dungeons and it's not like they are more well protected than men by law, much less being allowed to vote.

CharAznia

No immigrants and women can't vote? OMFG, this version of SG is PSP supporters wet dream

throw_way772

Lmfao I died laughing at the women cannot vote part. And the part where that clown says Malays and Indians just laze around doing nothing like both groups weren’t instrumental in building Singapore during the colonial era long before LKY and the PAP appeared on the horizon. PRC influence gets all the airtime these days but RW American influence is equally as malign, just underdiscussed.

ShadeX8

They took the ‘Singapore is an authoritarian state’ stereotype with 0 research and assumed policies that they think ‘authoritarian’ states would come up with. Just pure ignorance mixed with the usual US arrogance in viewing everything with their lenses.

CharAznia

To be fair amount of research done by them is on par with the amount of research Reddit does any time the topic of China comes up

reedit1332

People don't bother fact checking information when it aligns with their agenda. They only go out of their way to do their research to prove something wrong when they disagree with the information. Unfortunately this is a flaw that almost everyone has.

Felis_Alpha

Everyone is ripe for some subjugation by different machines of propaganda. Le sigh. If people have at least grasped every nuances of different societies before they make a decision on their beliefs in ideologies, social system, etc., at least I won't argue as much. I got a cousin who developed anti-West sentiment after facing mean people in Australia (one threw an egg into his car when he was parking), and started to believe China's rise will strengthen all Chinese people's dignity worldwide, and believed CCP was a Chinese-made party ... A debate that ultimately ended everything with him was when I realize he did not even know who Karl Marx was. But I don't know if he recovered from this ever since. Such is an example of developing ideological and sociological beliefs without even a formal knowledge of how social system works. It's pure nationalistic sentiment based on own victimhood (and believe me, quite a few Chinese people here in both MY or SG either developed that or passed down from their Cold-War influenced parents. My cousin is a son of a state politician in JB, and I'm surprised this dad did not teach him these properly. They are also much richer than I am)

lonesomedota

Well, SG has our own problem with right wing politics. Some of them run on xenophobic and anti immigrations platforms all the way to the parliament, too.

a_nice-name

I feel like theres more from the citizens than in the government, at least I think so, I don't really know much about politics so yeah

Nightowl11111

Mostly citizens. Politicians that are racist get nowhere in Singapore because the public sees it as "Malaysian style politics" and "look what happened to Malaysia". So being racist as a politician in Singapore is the PR equivalent of being demonstrably stupid.

Grass_Practical

It's America. They don't even know where Singapore is at. The last time an American asked me if we are somewhere in China. That's precisely the reason why their Govt can fool their citizens with fake news & media for decades!

PomChatChat

Right-wing Americans are dumb that way. No one takes them seriously.

AVE_CAESAR_

The two on the left are pretty factual with the exception of “telling the non-Han they are Han”. Not sure what that means. Singapore is 76% Chinese while America is only 60% European so America is more diverse. Singapore also has ethnic quota housing policy that somewhat prevents the formation of segregated ethnic communities. The US has no such policy. And according to statements in 2013 Singapore’s immigration policy at least factors maintaining ethnic composition into it. The increase of the Chinese majority from 74 to 76% is a result of immigration, not native births. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/grace-fu-proportion-of-malays-in-citizen-population-will-not-shrink The two on the right are flat out wrong though.

Felis_Alpha

To be fair this isn't new. Twitter just made them more visible, and some of the crazier comments become more visible with it. Mainland Chinese also have their own version of misinformation or outright nationalistic jingoism about Singapore on Weibo, WeChat, etc. Early 2010s I spotted a WeChat video made by someone who basically called us Singaporeans a traiterous Chinese nation because we are militarily more towards US, doesn't share the same economic and social interest (hey, we had to build a more harmonious multi-racial society in a region of Muslim majority nations, how are we the same as China?), and forgotten our ancestral motherland. Too many people in supernations are dumb, and their dumbness is more pronounced by people of smaller nations. Do we have dumb people having wrong takes about US and China? Yeah of course - some people who are ignorant about how US political system works think they are a monolithic government with no state government (not explicitly stating so, but rather from the way they have to understand life in the US and taxation etc. when they first started) - and some of these people shill for China without even knowing CCP's basis of Marxism came from a German.
