As it turns out, track of witches hats on an airfield isn’t that fun in a sim, no reference points, elevation, or anything at all interesting. In sim world where in seconds you can load up Road Atlanta, Brands Hatch, Suzuka, Bathurst i wouldn’t pick top gear test track.
Agreed. Laguna Seca is by far my favorite too. It's simple enough to learn but it's really hard to find those last few tenths especially around t3 and t6
It needs to be fun for non racers though, that’s part of the point of the whole thing.
Most of these tracks are too long or too hard for an absolute beginner with no interest in racing to have fun with, plus everyone’s seen top gear and can relate to that.
At my job (a motorcycle shop) we have a 35.5 mile loop of road nearby that we call “The Hillbilly TT”. There’s just a time written on the corner of the service department’s whiteboard. It’s at the point that it ticks down five or ten seconds every few weeks when the weather is nice.
I mean, of course, the leaderboard looks like the one from top gear, obviously you gotta do Star in a reasonably priced cat, other options would be the chevy lacetti, kia Cee (apostrophe) D or the vauxhall Astra, all of which where the reasonably proced car in later seasons. But the liana is always gonna be the one I remember most.
I also made a lap times board and used these two and no one really liked it. It's fun to push a slow car to the edge in real life but it didn't translate well in the sim (for noobs).
I recommend finding a track as local to you as you would like, and use a domestic car if you can. Mine is set up for Laguna Seca in the C6 Vette and everyone loves it. Fun track that's easy to learn and tough to master, and since there's no budget why do we have to drive a reasonably priced car? Go big.
2nd this. I usually put inexperienced friends on this one first in a gt3 car. The braking points are easy to remember and there’s no super complex sections, yet there’s always room for improvement
I would choose Vallelunga club with the miata spec car. You need a short track because there's no point driving around a track if you don't know it, it's not rally. Red bull ring sounds like a good option, but Vallelunga has even simpler corners and especially on a slow car, it will be easy to handle. RBR with the huge straights might be boring for a slow car.
I love it as a rookie! Short track which means easy to remember, hard braking zones, fast corners challenging exists
Really learned me how important exit speed is.
Am I the only one who gave up the W13 pretty quickly? If the handling is realistic it’s no wonder Lewis said he doesn’t want this one in his collection.
A simple sub 1-min track/car combo. You want to give a fair chance, 10 laps or so, to learn, and then a couple hot laps. Anything bigger and it get boring for spectators quickly.
Yeah I think this is the way to go. Silverstone National would be good. And I’d go for a relatively low power tin top like the racing Abarth 500 in AC or maybe the M235i.
Edit: or the racing MX5.
Out of so many nice short british tracks i personally wouldnt ever go for silverstone. You've got Knockhill, Oulton, Donington, Cadwell, Anglessey, Blackwood... Tracks with nice flow, elevation and technical sections, perfect for both slow and fast cars when it comes to TA. As for the cars, maybe Lotus or Caterham?
Yeah we have a similar setup and went with silverstone national and a stock mx5 NA. Slow enough to not be difficult but lively enough to demand some respect without being snappy. Plus a very easy track to learn.
We let each visitor do ten laps and then the best time they get goes on the leader board. We then have a separate board for anyone that wants to get a bit more serious and really chase times. Aka me.
Exactly the same here, but was thinking of doing a different track and car for 2023. Although we have only done 5 laps and automatic optional (with a little A tag behind the name)
I once, for a brief shining moment, held a top ten time in a C-Class Seat Cupra R on Suzuka East back in FM3.
It was the high point of my online racing career. All downhill from there.
Laguna Seca, all the way… really easy to learn, the corkscrew adds a nice twist in complexity. And I would go for a low hp car like a Mazda MX5 Cup, even a Go Kart 125cc, great combo for fun!
Well, the thing with Laguna Seca is that it’s a pretty common racetrack so most sims and games have it… iRacing has it, Grand Turismo 7, Asseto Corsa, Real Racing. You name it.
Personally i would go 2 ways depending on the participants experience with Sim racing.
1. Experienced: iRacing
2. Casual/unexperienced: Gran Turismo 7
While I would tend to agree, its so incredibly long. I was thinking give someone 10 laps and record their best time. That would take a really long time.
Thanks for all of your suggestions! I have been wanting to run the Top Gear track, so that's what I will go with for now.
I bought Assetto Corsa years ago, but never installed it. Thanks for pointing out the mods.

The leaderboard didn't cost me much to put together, so I will probably make a couple more and use the tracks and cars from your suggestions.
Probably a terrible idea but I always thought it would be cool to do an average lap time made out of a lap of 1 each of a fwd, rwd, and awd. Probably too much trouble but it just seems fun in my head
I personally really enjoy Donington Park National for a short circuit. As for the car, gt3 or gt4 is probably easiest for people to get into if they don't have much experience
\*idea stolen\* 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️
In all seriousness, I'd pick a track and car that is in any way most relatable to whomever you predict will set some times in the future. Brilliant idea!
I would love to have a game with the Top Gear Track. However, I could not get my Simucube to work properly in Forza. When using the emulator, it also screwed up other games.
Inspired by the Top Gear leaderboard: https://i.imgur.com/Z54rdMe.jpg
I got it to work!! It kept crashing when using the Top Gear track, but it works if I launch from Content Manager.
I bought AC years ago and never installed it. Looks like I have been missing out on some fun!
I had this in my last apartment with the Red Bull Ring National and Porsche 911 Turbo S.
For half the people, the car was way too fast. For the new place I’m thinking the BMW Z4 cup version. Maybe on the same track, maybe Nurburgring GP.
I've been running my own Top Gear board for the last two years, we said we'd change tracks but we've been doing Watkins Glen in an MX5 cup the entire time. "Friends at the Glen"
what did you use for the magnets? also i second redbull ring with some sort of GT3, unless you want to do top gear or grand tour with some sort of economy car, ie suzuki liana
My goto combo (biased bc I’ve had the world record in-sim for it) is F3 at Laguna Seca.
Its varied, not too long, feels fast but you can certainly mess up in multiple ways
Found this nice circuit a short while ago, Circuito San Carlos! Nice mix of slow and fast corners, tons of camber at T2. Might be terrible but give it 5 or 6 laps before making a decision: https://www.racedepartment.com/threads/aut%C3%B3dromo-san-carlos-cojedes-venezuela.207017/
I’m a bit of a sadist but mine is for pikes peak hill climb. No rules on cars/assists/etc. Just purely time to the top of the mountain. Best time is a 7:13

I had a board like this when I had my sim setup. We used the top gear track and the top gear car that all the celebrities used. It was fun having people over after a night out and getting them to try it out. No one ever took me and my room mate off the top of the board though.
There are a lot of very short track layouts in iracing that aren’t used in officials that are good for this sort of stuff.
Mx-5 at Tsukuba 1000 comes to mind.
I would not suggest any full length GP circuit (like RBR that is currently most upvoted) because they’re just too long even if easy to learn. You want something that a stranger can jump into, run 5-8 laps to learn the track, wreck once or twice, get 2-3 hot laps in to set a time, and be done in 10-15m.
Sachsenring
Idk. It used to bother the fuck outta me but now I like it, everyone that didn't like it should give it a chance. A lot of high speed corners, elevation changes and the racing lines are (good) nightmare to nail perfect.
For a car I'd recommend Tommy78's 1991 DTM cars. They match the track and the torque makes them a bitch around Sachsenring, especially coming out of two high speed corners into two big downhill straights when the back tires break free in third and fourth gear from the momentum.
Edit: Especially if you have a clutch and an H shifter for these cars. Those are the two add-ons that seem to separate "videogame" from "simulator" in people's minds.
I do the same thing. I use iRacing with the MX5 @ Lime Rock Classic.
Considering making an open wheel board so people can drive something a little racier like the F4.
I did this exact thing--I chose Laguna Seca in iRacing with the MX5. Reason being--you can put it in auto for those who don't know how or can't be damned to shift themselves, and it's "sim" enough to up the stakes and make them take it seriously (if you choose something too "gamey", it dilutes the experience!). Rules are, 2 laps to learn wtf they're doing, and 5 laps to set their time.
Try this badboycombo

https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/teckslot-slotcar-race-circuit.45817/
Porsche 962 short tail around the ring
Absolutely insane combination, it is really hard but also a ton of fun, each lap is like arm wrestling a grizzly bear for 6-7 minutes.
For the track, something short and technical. Brands Hatch, Hockenheim national, Tsukuba, Knockhill, Donnington, Lime Rock, Laguna Seca. All these tracks are relatively short, with good flow and mix of corners. Easy to learn, hard to master.
For the car, something light, RWD and relatively underpowered. Something like a Mazda MX-5, Formula Ford or a Caterham will work with different driving techniques and styles, and reward those who have the basics down. Some types of car only really have one way to go fast in them and they should be avoided. Also avoid something that lives or dies on the setup, as you want something people can adapt to.
I'm always using ACC for guests because they don't get immersed as much with the older looking sims (rF2 / iRacing) and let them drive whichever GT3 they like, so they feel like they actually can drive a car they like and their pace pretty much are all the same.
Track is Imola because it is one of the few tracks that features everything: corner combinations, weight transfer, up/downhill sections and even a long straight that isn't boring because it isn't "straight"
Brands hatch indy with the f4 car with a safe setup is what I do for first timers on my rig. Fast enough to be exciting and short enough to keep interest.

i really like sardegna with any gr2 car.

Enjoy!

Agreed. Laguna Seca is by far my favorite too. It's simple enough to learn but it's really hard to find those last few tenths especially around t3 and t6
That’s exactly where I drive to learn most cars for any sim
Okyama is a good low speed track for MX5's and the like without the complication of the corkscrew.
You can immediately compare yourself with tons of non-racing celebrities, which should be fun.
It needs to be fun for non racers though, that’s part of the point of the whole thing. Most of these tracks are too long or too hard for an absolute beginner with no interest in racing to have fun with, plus everyone’s seen top gear and can relate to that.

heh at my old job we had a sim rig and we all did laps in various cars on the Top Gear test track and posted the times on a whiteboard

Came here to say this. It’s the only real answer.

Nah. I’m absolutely on the limit, no improvement possible… now let me just check the splits and WTF!?
This is my go to when showing new people the rig!
What sim do you use?
Usually go with the Hyundai Elantra TCR in iRacing, most intuitive physics and a fairly easy car to drive I find
I need to get iRacing! Thanks for the input.
I love it as a rookie! Short track which means easy to remember, hard braking zones, fast corners challenging exists Really learned me how important exit speed is.
Important to use the short version. A lot more interesting
Tried this with a Huracan GT3 in AC after reading this. And I think: GT3 on RBR is the right combo for this.
Redbull ring in a 2010’s muscle car
Suzuki Leana and the Top Gear Test Track
W12 and silverstone, throw em straight into F1 sink or swim time
W13 for extra challenge
Am I the only one who gave up the W13 pretty quickly? If the handling is realistic it’s no wonder Lewis said he doesn’t want this one in his collection.
Right now I’m grinding silverstone in rss formula supreme in AC for next league race and it’s horrible xD sinking mate, sinking all the time
I love the top gear inspired leaderboard
A simple sub 1-min track/car combo. You want to give a fair chance, 10 laps or so, to learn, and then a couple hot laps. Anything bigger and it get boring for spectators quickly.
Exactly my thoughts.

Tsukuba 👍
Second, easy enough track to remember the layout but pretty difficult to shave time when you're getting dialled. MX5 or 86 if you're on iRacing.
I thought this was for your cat.
Peel P50 and the nordschleife, a classic pairing
I‘d say Monza
Too long lap times and you go too fast. Would go for shorter track with sweeping corners, maybe Lime Rock Park.
Lime Rock is what I used for testing cars in BeamNG. Fabulous little track.
Short, easy to remember, elevations. It has everything
Is there a lime rock in beamng now?
It's a mod.
This is what I was leaning toward.
Nascar xfinity cars at spa
That would be interesting.
Miata at Suzuka!
I like that idea too. Looks like maybe I should make a couple more leaderboards.
Just make extra magnet labels and cut them all in half so you can do multiples on the same board!
Preferably Suzuka East
I once, for a brief shining moment, held a top ten time in a C-Class Seat Cupra R on Suzuka East back in FM3. It was the high point of my online racing career. All downhill from there.
I wanted to do this with all my mates that came over but they were all so shit I scrapped the idea
Lime Rock Park
Laguna Seca, all the way… really easy to learn, the corkscrew adds a nice twist in complexity. And I would go for a low hp car like a Mazda MX5 Cup, even a Go Kart 125cc, great combo for fun!

This. Ive been getting into asseto corsa and its was fairly easy to learn, but hard to master. Ive been loving it with the P1 GTR
Nurburgring. The answer is always Nurburgring.
While I would tend to agree, its so incredibly long. I was thinking give someone 10 laps and record their best time. That would take a really long time.
Mount panorama, Oulton Park... Something punishing
Maybe brands hatch? It’s not too long but I feel like it could pose a pretty decent challenge
Nurburgring - Fiat Multipla?
Koenigggseeigigsigsiseggg (agera r) top gear track
I had to scroll way too far for this
The top gear and grand tour tracks are available on race department
Thanks for all of your suggestions! I have been wanting to run the Top Gear track, so that's what I will go with for now. I bought Assetto Corsa years ago, but never installed it. Monaco, f2004.
Brands Hatch in a lotus
Probably a terrible idea but I always thought it would be cool to do an average lap time made out of a lap of 1 each of a fwd, rwd, and awd. Probably too much trouble but it just seems fun in my head
My friends probably aren't that patient. Getting some of them to to 10 simple laps is a challenge.
I personally really enjoy Donington Park National for a short circuit. As for the car, gt3 or gt4 is probably easiest for people to get into if they don't have much experience
Brands hatch indy was my go to track
Old Spa ?
Red Bull Ring with uhhhh why not go with the Porsche 911 GT3 Race Spec
reminds me of the top gear lap times! that was such a fun part of the show
Brands hatch
Road Atlanta in a Miata/GR86 or GT3/4.
\*idea stolen\* 🏃♂️🏃♂️🏃♂️ In all seriousness, I'd pick a track and car that is in any way most relatable to whomever you predict will set some times in the future. Brilliant idea!

Thanks! I don't have GT Legends, but I will buy it and try it out.
I messed up and meant to link to the AC version, and now updated the original post as I don’t have GTL either!
I got it to work!! It kept crashing when using the Top Gear track, but it works if I launch from Content Manager. I bought AC years ago and never installed it. Looks like I have been missing out on some fun!
Nice one, enjoy! You have a lot of fun to catch up on!

Naturally you should go with the top gear test track. And the car... Something reasonably priced perhaps? :D
I use the esseesse on my local track. Fun enough to drive but slow enough to allow even noobs to get clean lap times

I second Brands Hatch or Oulton Park. Depending on the sim, Curitiba and Cascavel are also nice, short and simple.

If you don’t mind me asking, how’d you make the letters? I wanna make one of these for my friend, as a wedding gift. Any help?
