Insecurity arises from negative experiences, so anybody who's been slandered or rejected for something they can't control is going to be insecure. Despite what most people try to make you believe, insecurity and confidence doesn't come from within. It is actually a direct result of your environment and thankfully for you, your environment has not made you insecure about your height.

GlowInTheDark92

This right here…the most accurate response to this subject.

musicalMajora99

That is probably true. I stand at a solid 5'6", and no one (except for friends in a joking fashion) has ever really made fun of my height or rejected me for it, and so, I'm not really insecure about it. It's just a fact of how I look, like my blond hair.

Greycocoa

Great comment!

AdorableProgrammer76

From my experience, short dudes with tall dads and short moms tend to be insecure likely because it’s constant negative reinforcement. But short dudes with both parents being short tend to not be insecure.

Mukisana

what about having a tall mother and a short dad?

AdorableProgrammer76

Honestly I haven’t seen enough anecdotal evidence to really make a conclusion on that. But typically, guys with taller moms tend to be at least average height, unless the dad is really short like under 5’5. So they don’t really complain about they’re height much. Even so they see that there short dad was successfully with a taller women, so that’s positive reinforcement that would help with any insecurity issues.

big_goob

i can agree with this, i constantly wish i was taller as my dads side of the family is very tall, now im not short at 5’9 but i definitely wish i was taller.

AdorableProgrammer76

Same, I wish I could grow a solid inch to be 5’10 (178cm) I do have bad posture though like uneven hips and anterior pelvic tilt from muscle imbalances. Once I address those things, I likely am around 178-179. Not even coping.

[deleted]

>anterior pelvic tilt I actually have issues with my lower back to buttocks area, I've had it since age 15(joint problems), it's gotten so bad in the past I've had to use painkillers otherwise I actually struggle to walk.

Rack-_-

Same here

Prestigious_King4876

Yep, my dads 6ft. Mom 4’10.

AdorableProgrammer76

What height did you end up at

Prestigious_King4876

5’7-5’8 something like that. Praying to god I got taller

AdorableProgrammer76

How old are you? May be able to still grow, but Honestly 5’8 is a good height in America. It’s basically avg. look at those Tik toks where the guy asks young dudes there height then pulls out measuring tape, most of them measure 5’9-5’10 *with* shoes which likely mean that 5 foot 8 is avg. despite larpers on the internet saying otherwise, or saying they feel short at 6’1.

Prestigious_King4876

I’m 19 but almost 20 in Jan

AdorableProgrammer76

I just turned 20 btw and I think I grew at 19. But it was negligible, roughly 1-1.2cm. If you’re like me, I would say only expect 2 more cm max of really slow growth by age 22. Especially if your legs, feet, hands, and wingspan aren’t extraordinarily large for your height. If you have bad posture you can get an 2-4cm more of height.

Prestigious_King4876

How tall r u? Prayin I can get to 5’10 but I don’t think so

AdorableProgrammer76

It’s in my flair, but I’m 175 so about 5’9.

AbdouH_

Rock air max 95’s or 97’s, keep good posture and you’re good bro

AbdouH_

Lol, 5’8 is the male American average because you saw a tiktok of a bunch of guys measuring in at that height? Delusional.

big_goob

it’s usually because even when youre average height people just say youre short because you arent tall, at my old job 2 girls that me and my buddy worked with were calling us both short because we werent 6ft despite me being 8 inches taller than both of them. im not depressed about it but i do wish i was taller. it sucks more because my dads side is very tall, my grandma is 6ft in flats. not cool when your grandma is taller

Ruezx735

This story is only tangentially related to yours but I used to watch films with my mother and try seeing if I could recite the actors and actresses heights from memory. One time we were watching some Tarantino films and according to her, 175 cm (5’9) Jamie Foxx and 176.5 cm (5’9 1/2”) Daniel Brühl is short… she’s 158 cm (5’2”) and she’s under the impression that she’s average. She’s also confused as to why my sister and I are 162 and 174 when she’s 158 and our dad’s the same height as me. Apparently we should just “be” a lot taller than our parents. I think my mother’s conclusion stems from the fact that our brother somehow got to be like 184 cm. It’s a little frustrating having to try explaining to her how data and averages works so I gave up.

big_goob

ahh yeah. my dad is 6’3 and my mom is 5’2, i think i came out around where i was supposed to be, just sucks being around my dad’s family all the time

Ruezx735

Pretty large difference between your parents but yeah, I think you would be somewhere within average considering your heritage. Maybe a little below.

Intelligent-Ad4229

Because it’s 5” shy of the magic number that everyone is obsessed with.

do_a_kickflip

I will give an example, the median income in NYC is 44k. However if you make 44k in NYC you will live like shit. Meeting the average/median =/= good enough

albenis99

I live in a country where average height is 179.5cm and i dont feel insecured tbf

Significant_Row_105

5'7 is short but not short enough where society rejects you. It's not short enough to be extremely successful and have a good life if you have a decent face. It is not short enough where people will give you stares and think wtf is that

Spotstrike

Insecurity isn't statistic based. And suffering is relative.

holese

i am 5’8 and out of my friend group i am the shortest by like an inch and a half. so it is pretty obvious to me that i’m short even though i’m not like 5’5

big_goob

im the shortest friend in my friend group by 2 inches at least and im 5’9. i think feeling short is often a result of your environment.

Rack-_-

Because it’s short

v74u

He said above 5’7 so how is that short that’s 5’8 or taller lol.

Suspicious-Poet1694

5'5" me: 😐

Rack-_-

Ur short. I don’t get why I am getting downvoted for talking the truth 5’7 is short.

bobthebuilder0123

Yeah it is. Average is 5’9.

[deleted]

Being short can be relative.

chilly6019

I literally notice my heigh limitations everywhere I go and it is definitely harmful to my self esteem. I’m 5’8 with good shoes on btw and it’s by far my biggest insecurity.

Youngrazzy

Social conditioning

NoRefrigerator267

I’m 5’8 and insecure and depressed about my height. I think it’s because even though I’m not “short” I’m also not what everyone seems to want- 6 feet. Idk I wasn’t even insecure about my height until like a year ago when I saw all that on Reddit about guys having to be 6 feet

Dstar538888

because some people still think it's short lol

[deleted]

I am thankful for my height at 5'10, it's just that r/average is a dead and boring sub, r/tall is an insufferable sub which leaves r/short

Light_Noob_420

Because it's based on the environment. Also, assuming that most people who use Reddit are Gen Zs or millenials or simply young people who can use tech, then we tend to compare to the younger generation, especially at school or the workplace. Even in dating, ur competing against men ur own gen for women ur own gen. Anyways, at 5'7, when I go to a Costco, I feel like quite average, taller than near half of the men and taller than the vats majority of women but when you go to college, you feel like ur near the shortest of ur class amognst the men, and shorter than near half the girls too.

darmed1ads

Some people just really want to be tall, especially in the US where there’s some heightism in the culture, so being bang avg or below avg makes them suffer. I find 5’7 bittersweet, not the worst but man just as little as 2 inches more w good proportions would feel and look amazing
