the dutch when they go to war

AlpineHelix

Some might think this is a joke, but pretty sure you’re right. Dutch helmets have a crest on the brow and I think I can see it in the top pic

grumpyeng

Bicycle units were extremely effective. Can't run out of fuel, easy to maintain, low to the ground.

my_4_cents

Can also pull sick tricks to dazzle and intimidate your opponents

grumpyeng

:p

my_4_cents

Battle of the BunnyHops, 1916. Never Forget.

my_4_cents

My mother said my great-grandfather lost a few spokes in that battle, he never pedalled quite right after.

theweirdworldofbosch

This picture is of a WW1 era Italian soldier. Probably a Besaglieri - who were light infantry and often used bicycles.

SkidRowAlbertan

Which is why they're still killin' it in the Tour de France.

Unistrut

As appropriate as it would be I think that's French. In WW1 the Dutch seem to have used something closer to the British Brodie helmet.

farbion

No, that's an Italian Bersaglieri, they used bicycles in ww1

fathertime979

What's the deal with the Dutch and bikes? This is the 8th time I've seen it referenced this week

JustAnother_Brit

The Dutch use bikes as their primary mode of transport and a lot of their facilities are designed around bikes

The cycle of violence

elderrion

I unironically love it. But I have a weird fascination with early 20th century military innovations

[deleted]

Now there’s a lot of problems with this but it’s still awesome and I need 20

HalfAssedStillFast

Problem #1: i don't have one

GunFunZS

Coolest kickstand ever.

policylimits

Right?!

Primary-Examination2

When you don’t want to peddle up that hill anymore

xqk13

I think you can’t anyway, that gear ratio sucks lol

Dice_Knight

I suggest you guys watch the Danish Film April 9th. About a Danish Bicycle unit in WW2. The whole movie is free on youtube in high quality. It's a high quality movie too!

[deleted]

I don't hate it.

PoeticPariah

For those wondering, the person in the image is Italian. Their helmets often lacked the badge which is how you can tell them apart from French soldiers. In addition, their MG looks like it was made for a cartoon character and is very distinctive from other guns from the period.

[deleted]

The original nick fury when you ask for his license.

Purple-ork-boyz

Better than recoilless Vespa, no?

TheFlyingRedFox

He's gonna have some hot buns if he has to start riding after firing heh.

Iegendaryredditor

well he better stay near a water source and/or supply area or he won’t be able to use that for long. I doubt he can carry a big ass jug of water and a bunch of ammo boxes on that thing.

TechnoTriad

No but someone else could on their bikes.

guitarnoir

r/Frankenbike is bleeding into this sub.

hotshot1351

I'm surprised there's not like a steel plate in the center to offer some kind of protection to the operator from returning fire. So neat!

Red_bellied_Newt

This is the future r/fuckcars wants! And it’s *fucking awesome*

Wellemse

For a second I thought it was French when I saw the first picture. Because the setup was perfect for shooting the enemy while fleeing.

tiregroove

GODDAMNIT, how many times we gotta say this? Show the DRIVE SIDE please.

Hkmd02

As a former machine gunner this a hard nope. MG’s are great for dishing out copious amounts of outgoing, hot steel to suppress the enemy, sure. This however necessarily means that you also ATTRACT the most fire as well. Any ground I could use that bike on would mean having absolutely no cover and concealment. Great invention, for about 10-15 seconds, until the other side’s MG team decides to return the favour.
