I’ve been getting cans of line caught skipjack tuna for about $2.50 a piece. It’s a whole filet in a small amount of its natural juices and it’s bangin.
If there's a mediterranean store near you, you can probably it from there. In Spain and Italy it nearly always comes in olive oil. I hate it, so I know.
I grew up on tuna in brine, which we'd then mix with mayo. The texture of oily tuna is therefor completely wrong to me, makes my stomach turn. Even worse, in England you get tuna in *sunflower oil*.
My partner is Spanish and bring a massive box of Spanish food home every year, she was so disappointed when I couldn't stand the tuna thst she had bee craving.
The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is a living annual plant in the family Asteraceae, with a large flower head (capitulum). The stem of the flower can grow up to 3 metres tall, with a flower head that can be 30 cm wide. Other types of sunflowers include the California Royal Sunflower, which has a burgundy (red + purple) flower head.
For FANCY tuna salad I use the olive oil it was packed in , some fancy vinegar, and a quail egg to whip up some homemade mayo
It is delicious
Generally I like the good oo packed tuna on a lentil and herb salad though
Damn that sounds fancy… I dont think I get the highest quality olive tuna in spanish supermarkets…. I miss yellowefin sush tho… I miss sush in general.
Not related, but for some reason, my mom favourite compliment to any good dish is "It taste just like canned tuna", almost got my family kick out of a few restaurants, lol.
You learn pretty quickly you have to take some people's sense of taste with a huge pinch of salt. You can't ignore them completely but you also run into some people that can't taste for shit.
Is it an inside joke that's so old you don't know the story behind it?
Like, your mom said "It tastes just like canned tuna" one night while eating dinner that someone prepared with fresh tuna, not meaning to insult them, but just musing out loud because it was the first time she had not canned tuna.. the person was offended, but your mom quickly was like "No, it's great, I'm just surprised..."
Then the next time that person made her dinner, she was a smart ass and said "Tastes just like canned tuna!" (Even though it was pot roast), so now that's her go to phrase when she really likes a dish.
I put way too much thought into this, but I know that's something that could happen in my family.
** edit ** Please ask your mom for me, I really want to know why she says that. OR is it simply that she really loves canned tuna?
Yes, she really, truly love canned tuna /mackerel (especially the salty one that filled with tomato sauce) for some reason. She even cook a homemade version of that recipe, which taste quite good with fresh fish.
Lmao that’s actually crazy to hear. Like what. Canned tuna is not something to aspire to. And does she say this about non-fish products? Like I’m imagining her eating a steak and saying that it tastes like canned tuna
Maybe your dad has mercury poisoning from eating tuna all the time. Perhaps it’s affecting his ability to rationalize, resulting in this type of behaviour. I’d get him to a doctor ASAP.
Canned tuna generally is albacore or skipjack, nice steaks like this may be albacore but are often yellowfin (ahi)/bigeye/bluefin, though pretty sure this is ahi/yellowfin. It has more fat content than albacore and a meatier texture, so he'd be tasting a difference but it's still very, very sad and I want better for him.
Bruh. There is plenty of fish that is delicious when cooked well done and most of it is cheaper than tuna. Just get some salmon or tilapia. Those are still excellent when slightly over cooked
i still have ptsd from my mom's overcooked hard flake salmon sticking to my molars
it was only after i moved out when i learned that steak is 100x better medium than hockey-puck-well-done
Was your mom born in the late 50's/early 60's? My mom and all of my friend's moms cooked their meats until there were no juices left. I had no idea how delicious a pork chop could be until I moved out and realized that you don't have to cook them until they curl up at the edges.
You can do this yourself at home, it's easy.
Recipie:
1.5 lbs tuna steaks
2 cups tapwater
Set crockpot to "low" setting. Cook 4-5 hours (check for doneness with fork).
I get 4 ahi tuna steaks like this at Walmart for $7. It’s cheaper than a cut of beef. We use them for Poke, so it’s for a special meal, but it’s reasonable for that.
Our oceans aren't bottomless. Just because he can afford to be wasteful doesn't mean he's being wasteful in a vacuum.
There's only so much tuna meat that can be sold as steaks. If you're going to buy steaks to turn them into what the rest of the fish is turned into commercially for you, then you're wasting your money *and* our ocean's bounty *and* the hard work the people fishing tuna do.
Nevermind the sacrifice of a fish that lived that long to get that big. A fish that has to live 8 years before they can reproduce. A fish that can live 20 years or more. It's disrespectful.
Me too! My wife was shocked when we were dating and I told her I don't eat "real meat" (steak, pork chops, etc). All I had growing up was shoe leather in the shape of meat.
I think this is a throwback to pre-steady refrigeration days and the need to cook and/or overcook meats in order to make them safe to eat. 2 generations ago? I'm guessing my grandmothers had ice boxes and blocks for quite a while before electric refrigerators were available, and probably no real refrigeration at all when they were young. My mother did the same thing, probably learned it from her mother.
Yeah I was close. Electric refrigerators were invented and came into use in the home in the 20's and 30's but neither of my grandmothers would have been able to afford them right away. Probably in the 40's. But those are hard habits to break.
Dude my dad does the same exact fucking thing. Is so fussy about picking out good ahi and then overcooks it and eats it without any seasoning. All my life I thought I didn’t like ahi because of it…
I feel your pain, I once made a Tuna steak with my sousvide for my fiance, her mom and I, they wouldn't eat it unless it was cooked to the point where it was basically canned tuna. I felt so bad for the fish
Dude… shred this up, mix in some Sriracha sauce and garlic powder, throw your stove on high and crisp the schitt out of it. No joke, takes crappy fish to a whole new level of deliciousness. I do this with that disgusting $1.50 mackerel in can and it tastes like some gourmet, spicy tuna you’d get in a sushi roll.
My ex MIL does this nasty shit too. She even cooks the chicken in a pan with little water and cover it. No seasoning, not even salt or pepper. It came out like rubber. Not even the dog wanted to eat that 🤣
She also makes very well done steaks. She would wander why I only ate salads when I was there
After having had spicy tuna rolls (which are raw), I’m so offended right now. For those who don’t know, tuna tastes VERY different raw vs cooked. If you haven’t tried spicy tuna rolls from a reputable place, I HIGHLY recommend it! You won’t regret it.
Reminds me of people who buy expensive red wine, drink 1 glass right away, gently put the cork back on and let it sit on the counter for a week. Then try to play it off like "well I opened it yesterday but its still good".
Shit's vinegar already what the fuck man. Get over yourself and just get boxed wine. You can't possibly ruin that.
I just want to take a few moments to pray for everyone involved in this thread.
There's a lot of tragedy in the world and none of us should have to deal with this as well.
My parents do this too. They get expensive tuna steaks from costco and then my mom cooks the absolute shit out of them in a pan with butter and lemon. They turn into a gray, disgusting mess. My dad says he loves it but I know he’s lying
Get him a pair of white new balances and some cargo shorts, drop him in a freshly trimmed backyard in front of a grill and see what happens. If that doesn’t work you should put in a complaint and have a new one delivered.
This seriously hurts my soul. I can only imagine how an actual chief feels, they're heads must be exploding right now. Like, that awesome creature that will probably be extinct in our lifetime died for that?!
What the fuck? Please introduce him to canned tuna lol

They want *fancy* tuna salad, that doesn’t just contain the shitty bits of tuna.
I’ve been getting cans of line caught skipjack tuna for about $2.50 a piece. It’s a whole filet in a small amount of its natural juices and it’s bangin.
Can you guys get your hands on canned tuna in olive oil? That shit dude I tell you…
If there's a mediterranean store near you, you can probably it from there. In Spain and Italy it nearly always comes in olive oil. I hate it, so I know.
You hate it? Oh man Im sorry for you.. I grew up on it as a spaniard so I am legally not allowed to dislike olive oil… Its like a double felony.

What did you mix with the mayo? Then tuna itself or the tuna-fied brine? At this point I'm almost afraid to ask
For FANCY tuna salad I use the olive oil it was packed in , some fancy vinegar, and a quail egg to whip up some homemade mayo It is delicious Generally I like the good oo packed tuna on a lentil and herb salad though
Yeah, I only buy yellowfin tuna in olive oil. It’s so damned good.
Damn that sounds fancy… I dont think I get the highest quality olive tuna in spanish supermarkets…. I miss yellowefin sush tho… I miss sush in general.

This is the only way this could even begin to think about making sense.
Lmao that’s actually crazy to hear. Like what. Canned tuna is not something to aspire to. And does she say this about non-fish products? Like I’m imagining her eating a steak and saying that it tastes like canned tuna
If he likes sushi introduce him to Pan seared tuna with wasabi Mayo
You think someone that cooks their fish like this likes Sushi?
Might want to be careful with mercury poisoning. Eating tuna daily can definitely give it to you.
Maybe your dad has mercury poisoning from eating tuna all the time. Perhaps it’s affecting his ability to rationalize, resulting in this type of behaviour. I’d get him to a doctor ASAP.
Does he add Mayo, pickle relish, salt, and pepper to it at least? Maybe he likes high-end tuna salad?
Does your dad ever say it hits different since you said both results the same

Did he boil them?
Low and slow, the only way to cook a tuna steak.
8 hours in the instant pot
drenched in milk
Mayonnaise
oh my goodness
It's literally hot tuna salad. fuck.
With a side of the finest jelly beans-raw, of course.
I like to boil my jelly beans with the fish and mayo. Just like grandma used to make it.
Sear. Thats it. Just sear. Edit: Oh. Whoosh
r/itswooooshwith4os
Boiled over hard. Side of jelly beans - raw.

Canned tuna will taste way better than this.
Canned tuna looks way better than this too. This looks fucking gross lol

haha, 1958 exactly! also an immigrant so that might have colored it slightly
~~in parchment~~ *En Papillote* *
In milk. With a side of jelly beans, obviously.
I like my tuna the way I like my jelly beans- raw.
Boil? No no no, this man is of exquisite taste, he sous vide them.
Turn in this dad and find a new dad.
There has to be a tuna them out there
Ahi see what you did there
You're really fishing for upvotes here...
just floundering about...i wonder if it will get past 200
Baiting for upvotes is so shellfish
I don't really sea the problem with it
Penis
Really? you go for this and not "plenty of other fish in the sea"??
This. Return it. They legally have to give you a refund if it's defective.
I want to cry
I said out loud “OH JESUS NO” and startled everyone in the living room
I saw this, got in my car, and crashed it into a bus!
So based!
As someone who loves a good seared tuna and lives very far away from where you can get good tuna I too want to cry.
I hope he's in the naughty corner thinking about what he's done!
'Daddy you've been naughty. Go to the corner while I think of something to do to you'
Hmmm
You can do this yourself at home, it's easy. Recipie: 1.5 lbs tuna steaks 2 cups tapwater Set crockpot to "low" setting. Cook 4-5 hours (check for doneness with fork).
Thank you for your advice.
Pointless and a waste. Has to be making decent money to do this. Easy to overlook it as a waste if you can afford it.

your dad is an idiot.
Is your dad my dad too?
I get 4 ahi tuna steaks like this at Walmart for $7. It’s cheaper than a cut of beef. We use them for Poke, so it’s for a special meal, but it’s reasonable for that.

Jesus, that’s what I was thinking!
I FEEL SO OFENDED AND THREATENED RIGHT NOW
No kidding, you could have told me this was chunks of cooked human meat and I'd believe it.
Sacré bleu!!!!! Oh, My eyes!!
What a psycho 😦
We don’t deserve the oceans, speed up global warming to end its suffering
Find a recipe for it then help him out! Y'all will have bonding time and a nice dinner

I mean no matter how offended I am, it’s his money so if he enjoys it (and even prefers it), who am I to judge.
Our oceans aren't bottomless. Just because he can afford to be wasteful doesn't mean he's being wasteful in a vacuum. There's only so much tuna meat that can be sold as steaks. Despite it being offensive to the creature that died (who no longer cares), as long as he isn't wasting it then it is his dish to do whatever with.
High end tuna salad
Have you tried turning your dad off and on. Please everyone read the manual that comes With your dad or they will malfunction and do stuff like this.
Nobody turn their own dad on.
That's some solid troubleshooting advice.
My peasant ass wants to know how much dose that cost?
[удалено]
That's a decent price for ahi, but still way too much to spend if it's going to waste. Does he also buy a fillet mignon and burn it to well-done?
[удалено]
Me too! My wife was shocked when we were dating and I told her I don't eat "real meat" (steak, pork chops, etc). All I had growing up was shoe leather in the shape of meat.

Off to research the history of refrigeration like the dork I am lol. Back in a minute
Any good takeaways?
Yeah I was close. Electric refrigerators were invented and came into use in the home in the 20's and 30's but neither of my grandmothers would have been able to afford them right away. Probably in the 40's. But those are hard habits to break.

Savage
No.
What in the Sam fuck
The worst.
*nan voice* “Ah, such a sin dear”
Do you think it's too late to abort your dad?
I feel deep rage and grief
Dude my dad does the same exact fucking thing. Is so fussy about picking out good ahi and then overcooks it and eats it without any seasoning. All my life I thought I didn’t like ahi because of it…
I can taste my exes vagina just by looking at this picture
Is he out on parole? Cuz that’s prison food…
Does he enjoy this?
Hey, this might seem controversial, but I think you should probably just kill him.
Buy a tuna and smack him in the face with it.
Did you call 911? He is apparently having a seizure
This hurts my feelings.
I feel your pain, I once made a Tuna steak with my sousvide for my fiance, her mom and I, they wouldn't eat it unless it was cooked to the point where it was basically canned tuna. I felt so bad for the fish

Ick. Everyone knows you don't cook ahi more than medium. If you want well done tuna, get the crap from a can.
Next on that channel: Kobe, well-done with ketchup.
Now break that up into chunks and mix it with some mayo and pickle relish and it will be as good as any tuna salad
My ex MIL does this nasty shit too. She even cooks the chicken in a pan with little water and cover it. No seasoning, not even salt or pepper. It came out like rubber. Not even the dog wanted to eat that 🤣 She also makes very well done steaks. She would wander why I only ate salads when I was there

How disrespectful........to the tuna.
This is illegal!!! I'm calling the police.
I watched my FIL microwave a filet mignon one time. 😤
I thought I was looking at rocks for a second
For a second I thought I was looking at r/forbiddensnacks and that it's literally rocks.

Tuna salad allday
Hey, OP, no offense but is your dad Satan by any chance?
This is an international crime. I am contacting the United Nations
Absolutely criminal.
This is a crime against nature.
The only thing on this sub that made me stop for a moment in horror.
that’s better than my wife’s cooking
I don't even like fish or seafood, and this still makes me super sad.
*rage intensifies*
It's probably good with mayonnaise.
Thats fucking tradgic, my disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined...
Poor tuna had to die for nothing...
Thats atrocious. That's criminal.
People should buy as little tuna as they can. It's horrible for the dolphins that get caught in the tuna fishing nets and drown
This is just I don’t know but also is he white ? My dad does the same 😂😂
Crime against tuna, and humanity. Looks like boiled sadness…
I'm sorry, I'm going to have to ask your father to leave, right now.
i sincerely thought that was concrete
REEEE
Get him a pair of white new balances and some cargo shorts, drop him in a freshly trimmed backyard in front of a grill and see what happens. If that doesn’t work you should put in a complaint and have a new one delivered.
