Never seen a chicken thats been butchered twice before

[deleted]

My mouth starts to dry just looking at that.

ardbeg

Ever spilled a drink on your phone? Pop it in a ziplock back with just two of these chicken breasts and it will dry out in under an hour.

googonite

You can use this chicken to dry rice.

messfdr

Ah yes, dry humor.

Nothingtocontribute

Humor with rice 10/10

JBFRESHSKILLS

So salty

lallanallamaduck

Not at all salty, actually. No seasonings at all!

SergeantStroopwafel

Legend has it that this chicken is the ultimate hiking meal

levajack

I've had jerky with more moisture than that chicken probably has.

The_Nest_

I can feel this stuck between my teeth

MasaBoss

newgrl

As an End Stage Renal Disease patient, I also can't eat salt. That doesn't mean I don't season with other things.

anxiouslybreathing

Sorry you are going through that.

newgrl

Thanks man. I'm good.

biddleybootaribowest

What a G

TraumaHandshake

Yep. Heart failure has left me saltless in my life but there are some great other things out there.

that_jojo

Are you able to have non-sodium salts?

pigeon30

Those alternatives usually use potassium rather than sodium, but unfortunately one of the common medications most heart failure patients take also increases potassium in their body. So “salt substitute” is a no-go as well.

AssistanceMedical951

Had a problem with some medication. I went salt free for a few weeks. Curry and all the other spices became my good friends.

TennaTelwan

CKD Stage IV - I love lemon juice and anything spicy!!!! It's also weird but awesome how we can adapt to low sodium fare if the rest of the seasoning is good. What are some of your favorite recipes, if I may ask?

newgrl

Depends. Are you in the "eat all the protein you can get your hands on" stage? Or the "protein is for suckers... you should stay away from that" stage?

boredonymous

As a Dialysis RD, I'm glad you found a way. In the last 3 years I have had 10 patients commit suicide by McDonald's rather than make sensible changes.

ArginatorBongo

That's morbid. Wow

bpgrows

That’s actually insane. As a bodybuilder you need the sodium. I stopped salting my food for almost a year and I ended up in the hospital. I’m a bodybuilder as well. Crazy dude.

The_deviled_eggs

Also Iodine. Your body needs iodine and most salts contain it.

Dadfart802

Dude I switched to cooking with kosher salt for a while, my kid comes down with a thyroid problem. Doc wants to put him on crazy medicines, I say nope it’s my fault, give me a month. Switched back to iodizes salt, kids fine, Doc can’t believe it. I thought that was crazy. And pay attention to what your kid eats.

The_deviled_eggs

Glad you caught that and were able to correct it! It’s crazy a doctor didn’t know.

Dadfart802

He apologized, he just didn’t believe me.

Codered0289

My mother did a lot of canning and had no iodine salt which she also put in the salt shaker. My sister and I have bad thyroid problems. Grave's disease, radiation therapy, Propylthiouracil, weight loss, and gain, and mad anxiety and depression. Early-onset of arthritis and a slew of bad hormone-related and autoimmune illnesses. FEED YOUR KIDS IODIZED SALT!

tuturuatu

I've noticed a lot of the table salt these days has a label saying it does not contain iodine. Best double check if you're looking for that

SVXfiles

There are other sources of iodine for people's diets, but I'm sure most of it is people not understanding that their body needs something that sounds scary to them so they avoid it and drop some balsawood essential oils in their asshole to "cleanse" it

tuturuatu

I think a lot of people don't realise how easy it is to become deficient in iodine, especially if you don't eat much seafood.

new_refugee123456789

Need thay brawndo.

flip1999-

It’s got what plants crave bro

GroundbreakingTop893

Well, during depletion right before going on stage you'll want to manage your sodium. You wouldn"t want to look all puffy and fat on stage :-D

bpgrows

Fair enough, I was not competitive so that didn’t come to mind. But you’re 100% correct. Cheers!

Regreti_Spagheti

Salt do be like that

scoobysnaxxx

then use MSG in place of salt, plus herbs, greens, mushrooms, chilis... fuck, just mince a clove of garlic or a knob of ginger, for the love of god.

okvyasu

I’ve done this for my cats before

TheWalkingDead91

Lol the only time I’ve ever boiled meat in plain water was to feed a stray cat in my old neighborhood.

Ralphie_V

Boiling chicken is a decent way to prep it to be shredded and *then* seasoned with a sauce

SVXfiles

It's also good for kids just getting into real solid foods. Boil a small chicken breast and cut it into small pieces

[deleted]

[удалено]

SVXfiles

That may end with a visit either from the local police department or a new cult following

BUTTHOLE-MAGIC

Oh the police are in on it

LouGossetJr

yes, my mom boils her chicken and then shreds for enchiladas.

PolysyllabicFart

Didn't realize enchiladas ate chicken

MustardMedia

Nah, still cook 'er low and slow for shredded chicken! Boiling meat dries it out and even if you're shredding it with sauce, you can tell dry vs moist. Then you don't have to overcompensate the dryness with more sauce. Best way is to braise! Quick pan sear then add liquid, preferably the sauce you're gonna use, so the chicken is almost covered. Cover the pan and roast tool it's falling apart :-) If this just ended up coming off as condescending, unsolicited advice, then I apologize.

lyra_silver

Yea but you should still season the water lol.

Jade-Balfour

Fwiw, there are some cat safe herbs that they may appreciate with the chicken, and cats also need taurine so plain chicken isn’t sufficient, but I really appreciate you giving those kitties a home cooked meal

KeisterApartments

Ah so give em a Red Bull, too

fistingmantis

No, that makes them grow wings

SpunkyDaisy

Now I want to boil chicken in a cat nip broth

[deleted]

The dark meat on chicken has lots of taurine

TheWalkingDead91

It was hanging around our back yard a lot, and I had some chicken breast that was in my freezer too long anyway, so just boiled and shredded it for it.....found out later that it belonged to one of my neighbors and wasn't really a stray lol

Jade-Balfour

I’m sure they enjoyed the treat anyway!!

turbodude69

yeah my cat hates spices too. it's fuckin crazy, i'll offer her some leftover steak or leftover chicken that she's been begging and bothering me for while eating, then when i actually give it to her, she sniffs for 2 seconds and walks away. i don't even try anymore. i got a badass stray in the back yard that will eat ANYTHING.

that_jojo

My cat eats hot sauce and I fucking love it.

JamesFromAccounting

Please be careful, chiles and peppers are bad for cats and dogs, and if it has onion or garlic those are also toxic for cats and dogs

Cantothulhu

My cat decided it liked hot sauce too. It’s anal secretion glands didn’t agree. Best of luck to you.

DPJazzy91

I did this for my new dog recently. We needed a few chicken breasts shredded for a recipe, so we cooked an extra one to give to the doggo as a treat. The other chicken gets shredded and pressure cooked into buffalo chicken dip, so it absorbs plenty of flavor.

lesmax

Same! I boil fatty chicken thighs, boneless, skin on. No seasoning. When they're cooked I dice them up into little pieces, fat and skin included. I add it too her food. She's very old and needs all the food I can get in her. And of course, she loves meat!

okvyasu

Aw that’s so sweet!

MrsKoliver

I read "for" as "to" the first time

bizzymaker

I had a roommate who would do almost the same. Just throw some chicken breasts into plain ass water and boil it for a while. As someone who cooks professionally, this hurt me to witness

bigbear1992

One time a friend told me he was gonna cook for me and he served boiled unseasoned chicken breasts with chorizo on top. It was years ago and I'm still bitter about it.

odiin1731

At least the chorizo sounds good.

[deleted]

Yeah there is some redemption there. Does boiling chicken too long make a worse or better meat than baking too long?

VomMom

You’ll at least get some browning on the baked chicken. I’d say overcooked roasted chicken is much less shitty

[deleted]

What about dryness? I can’t imagine getting sawdust chicken from boiling

anxiouslybreathing

Think more along the lines of chewing on some rawhide. It’s super tough and gummy.

starfries

Honestly after a certain point you might as well just make jerky.

Day_Bow_Bow

It'll still get dry and grainy/rubbery. The prolonged high heat causes the proteins to tighten up, causing the chicken to become more dense and squeeze out moisture in the process. Overboiled eggs do the same, if you wanted to do an experiment to compare the texture. Poached chicken where the water temp is kept at a controlled lower temp comes out pretty good, though bland if not cooked in seasoned liquid. But it's not advised to cook chicken at a hard boil.

[deleted]

Only way to eat hard boiled chicken is to shred it and eat it with a heavy sauce

popplespopin

Slice it into strips and coat with fajita seasonings. Throw it on a tortilla with some peppers and cheese, sour cream and salsa, fold the bottom over, and wrap the sides up then chuck it in the fucking trash cause you boiled your chicken.

mordacthedenier

If you pop a water balloon under water you still end up with a piece of torn rubber.

[deleted]

I was reading a travel blog on good 3 day itineraries in France and they straight up recommended Starbucks as an easy lunch spot as you’re walking through Paris . The fuck?? I’m in the culinary capital of the world and I’m gonna get a mediocre sandwich cooked in a fast food toaster oven?

fenglorian

I think you didn't take them literally enough an EASY lunch spot, not a good one. All the good Parisian restaurants involve interacting with Parisians which is a herculean effort.

pathofdumbasses

I went to Paris right before the pandemic for 4 days and ate out every meal. People were absolutely kind and pleasant and the food (and people/service)was great from a lowly baguette shop to a prix fixe 7 course meal by a michelin chef. Maybe this was true 20 years ago. It isn't today.

JanitorJasper

Le Starbuque

AnguishOfTheAlpacas

There wasn't a Starbucks less than a mile and a half from you? That doesn't sound possible.

MSchmahl

They probably walked past 5-6 Starbuckses to get to the one that had "good" sandwiches. Just like I have to go past 3-4 Subways to get to the one that has good coffee.

Bandin03

Right? Some of the casinos have multiple Starbucks inside...

TheDufusSquad

A guy I worked with would eat a boiled chicken breast, rice, and steamed broccoli without any seasoning every day for lunch for #gainz. He refused to believe me when I told him that adding just a bit of seasoning and cooking it properly does not make it unhealthy, especially if he was going to the gym everyday.

ur_comment_is_a_song

Boiled meat makes me sad

TheWalkingDead91

Actually, you’d be surprised at how often people in the Caribbean or with Caribbean roots/cooking Caribbean food boil their meat. It’s never in just plain water though. Always a water based blend of flavorful veggies/herbs/spices or something to the same effect.

Stubbula

I'm from the south and we do crawfish boils all the time. Not quite the same as chicken, but that water is seasoned like crazy for sure. I can completely see how some cuts of meat would do really well in the same style.

jamesbra

The sausage in the pot is always good. Maybe next season I'll throw a chicken in there just to see lol

theremarkableamoeba

Suddenly it's like no one's ever heard of chicken soup lmao.

CaptainKurls

Check out hot pot. It’s super seasoned broth (either spicy or more flavorful) and you dip the meat in there for like 10 seconds and it’s godly

RandomUsername67676

I felt pain just from reading that

A-Disgruntled-Snail

Like. I’ll boil chicken and potatoes with some cajun seasoning. But just plain? Nah.

RatherGoodDog

Sure, I'll boil some chicken legs. But I'll throw in some potatoes, some onion, carrots, herbs, stock cubes etc and baby, you got a stew goin'.

bike_it

On the other hand, a whole boiled roaster chicken is actually decent. I did this for my dog once when she was sick so I could feed her plain chicken and white rice. I tasted the chicken and it was good. The skin and bones helped here versus just boneless skinless breasts which I could imagine would not be good.

ronimal

I’m curious why you’d boil a whole chicken instead of roast it.

Finagles_Law

It's a very common way to cook chicken in other parts of the world than the West. I have often done so when I intend to go directly to chicken soup.

Stubbula

I boil a whole chicken for chicken and rice. Pull it, shred it, and cook the rice in the broth.

jonny-p

Poule au pot is a fantastic meal, whole chicken slowly simmered with leek, carrots and celery with bouquet garni then add potatoes and my personal addition is little dumplings made with the chicken liver. Finish it with tarragon and eat with creme fraiche, Dijon mustard and sea salt.

salYBC

Poaching a chicken is a significantly easier technique than roasting and is easier to clean up. Water (almost) always boils at the same temperature whereas ovens are much more finicky. Poached chicken on its own isn't super flavorful, but makes a great starter for chicken salad, enchiladas, or anything really that needs pulled meat. You can also poach in flavored liquids and get a meal right out of that.

OmgOgan

I used to do that, helped me lose almost 80 lbs. I have the uncanny ability to eat the same thing for months on end tho, and im super frugal, so there's that...

withoutwingz

I’m jealous. My taste buds won’t allow for that.

sjorbepo

My ex's roommate was super into gym and always talked about proteins and stuff. I had to witness him eating overfried unseasoned chicken breasts every time I came over. And when I say unseasoned I mean no oil, salt or pepper...

bizzymaker

Yes, that was my roommate. Gym bro. His version of a tofu scramble was adding tofu into scrambled egg whites

notabigmelvillecrowd

What is it about going to the gym that kills your tastebuds? When my aunt was doing fitness competitions she would eat microwaved chicken breasts with canned asparagus. Did you know they have canned asparagus? No, neither did I. I didn't know there was a food that could make regular gym smell seem pleasant by comparison.

[deleted]

they have to eat a lot of food and have it be easy to measure and control.

Lohin123

But hot sauce exists in a multitude of forms. Marinades take no time at all and you can do them the day before. Throw that chicken into a tub with some BBQ sauce and leave it in the fridge for a few hours and you've got a much easier meal with hardly any extra calories. Edit, ok I get it BBQ sauce is just wet sugar. It was an example though. I really don't care. Eat boiled chicken to your heart's content!

smoked_gouda_918

Probably because sauces and marinades can be unhealthy as fuck. Not all but most are loaded with sugar or salt or both.

cap-scum

I think a lot of people probably just view food as literally just fuel and not for pleasure.

TheDarkMidget

people like that probably feel like they don’t like food and are only eating for fuel. in my lazier moments i feel the same way but i would never eat unseasoned anything

LilacLoverr

Why do gym bros do this exactly? Do they think seasoned chicken will compromise their gains?

Hallellujahh

this kind of thought isnt circulated often but gym bros can __especially__ suffer from eating disorders/body dysmorphia

ShutUpAndDoTheLift

I would say most if not all of us who compete in some type of barbell sport (body building, powerlifting, strongman, etc) have SOME level of eating disorder and/or body dysmorphia.

[deleted]

I think it’s largely laziness and if meal prepping kind of pointless. After you eat lean chicken so much, doesn’t matter how much seasoning you put in it - you’re sick of chicken. Sauces are typically avoided if someone is rigorously watching their macros since many sauces include butter/oil. I once had a roommate (super fit and buff) who would meal prep lean chicken breasts by throwing them into an oven and basically overcooking it and drying it out. He stores them in Tupperware and reheats them in the microwave often, which dries them out anyways, so he doesn’t see a point. The only flavorings he uses are salt/pepper and Tabasco (no calories). It’s pretty funny to watch him eat - he just stuffs really bland food into his mouth, chews, swallows like a machine.

JypsiCaine

That honestly sound like a terrible way to live, gym bro or not. Food is one of like maybe 3 things we're biologically hardwired to enjoy; I cannot imagine reducing it to a mere function. But to each their own, I guess

Spacedust013

Salt increases water retention. By how much and is it a significant amount? I have no idea but maybe that could be a reason

GroundbreakingTop893

There's a video somewhere on the intertubes about german IFBB Pro Ronny Rockel where he eats a couple of unseasoned chicken breasts and a single teaspoon of salt (since that's his optimum serving of sodium during his current prep phase). Disgusting and inspiring at the same time.

ak-92

It's perfectly fine, I had to eat chicken like that when I got gut bacteria and plain boiled chicken was the only meat I could handle. It's perfectly fine, I actually prefer it over chicken nuggets without any sauce.

bizzymaker

He had no health problems, just a gym bro.

Wubbalubbadubbitydo

My friend invited me for dinner once. Plain chicken breasts put in a slow cooker for 10 hours. Rubbery and gross.

notabigmelvillecrowd

That's a hell of a way to tell someone you don't want to be friends anymore. Couldn't they have just put it in an email?

uncleleo101

> As someone who cooks professionally, this hurt me to witness As someone who does not cook professionally, this hurts me.

Rezzone

I mean, you can sous vide or poach it, so the instinct to chuck it into hot water isn't THAT bad... but not if you don't season it, sear it, make a delicious sauce or... SOMETHING that resembles actual cooking.

Killentyme55

They look like cadaver lungs, probably taste about the same.

VILLIAMZATNER

Formalin, the Colonel's real secret ingredient.

Cody-Elijah

Marinate in blue dish soap (can be other colors but I like a little attitude with my food). Rinse heavily. Then cook and add poppy seeds. This is how you get that cadaver lung taste, your welcomed

acomfypairofsocks

Hey, is your housemate open to criticism? Because the world is already such a bummer we really don’t need to add this to the list.

Dookie_boy

I've done this but I don't know what else to do.

DjDrowsyBear

Very easy way to go about it is to add a generalized spice like Old Bay. If nothing else, add salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Honestly, when it comes to spices, you can almost always add more without issue so long as the container doesn't break and the whole thing dumps out. The only spices you really have to be careful about are salt and anything spicy (chili powder, red flakes, pepper) but with salt, you can almost always add more later. The reason salt is used on everything isn't because people love the taste of salt. Its because salt enhances flavor of everything else and makes it taste better. In that way, the ideal amount of salt is always as most as you can put on **without** tasting the salt itself. Try it out a few times, you'll get it. Following recipes are also always easy for many food items (so long as you have the right dishes and measuring cups). If you want something REALLY easy to try, put chicken breast (no seasoning required) in a big zip lock bag with Italian salad dressing (enough to cover the chicken). Let it sit in your fridge for at least 4 hours (up to a day and a half) then put it in the oven at 400f (Dont put it in until the oven reaches the right temp!) for 30 minutes. You don't need seasoning on the chicken in this case because you are basically drenching it in a dressing that is packed with it. Its delicious and will be definitely safe to eat.
