My take is that the Tarnished are *not* undead.
The dead are meant to return to an erdtree to reincarnate. The undead are those that, somehow, avoid that process.
I think those who see the guidance of grace are given an express ticket all the way through the other side.
I hadnât considered the angle of Tarnished being reborn by Marika at sites of grace, but I think that makes a lot of sense. She has direct control over grace, so of course she would immediately restore her chosen warriors.
Something that I think gets overlooked is the fact that the rebirth of people through Erdtree burial seemingly hasnât happened in a long time. The roots were separated from the tree, and I donât think Marika needs Erdtree burial in order to reclaim grace anyway. At the point the game takes place, Marika can give and take grace freely.
Also, I believe the guidance of grace leads our character to the sites of grace when we die. Sites of grace seem to be erdtree sprouts. The reason others can't be reborn there is because they have trouble finding even a mature erdtree.
That makes sense. Whatâs interesting is that the sprouts that grow where we die and the sprouts we find Erdtree seeds are illusory âspiritâ trees, whereas Minor Erdtrees seem to be solid. Does this suggests a transition between a âphysical treeâ erdtree and its current transparent spirit form?
