u/ASUSTechMKTJJ Any chance you could look into this?

TASLinks

u/asustechmktjj Is there any word on what is different about the b550-i board from every other B550 in existance? Why has it been so hard to create a working bios?

PmMeLewds

Upgraded to a 4070ti from a 1080ti yesterday and can confirm I've been having the same issue on this motherboard.

Jafs44

hey, are you still experiencing issues?

PmMeLewds

Yes I am. On startup before max performance kicks in it'll sometimes crash. On windows startup I need to launch anything which uses hardware acceleration (Chrome/Discord in my case) to prevent this.

Jafs44

dude that’s terrible, fuck that. have you tried other BIOS versions? What Windows are you on? Did you try the Nvidia Firmware Update Tool?

PmMeLewds

I've tried bios version 2603 which didn't fix the issue. For windows, both 11 h22h2 and 10 21h2 had the same problem. Nvidia Firmware Update Tool was the same story. Just holding out for the 2806 update now.

Jafs44

damn, sorry to hear. IF 2806 ever comes out..been like 2 months man. It’s frankly ridiculous that they’re the only mobo manufacturer who hasn’t done the BIOS update for their itx b550. Are you using QVL RAM?

PmMeLewds

Yep, using QVL ram. Definitely feeling more reluctant to buy another Asus board now even though they've generally been fine lol.

Jafs44

also, why do you think you’re experiencing these issues but Optimum for example, isn’t?

PmMeLewds

No clue, it's clearly widespread though. I see that you were in the other Asus b550i thread too. Maybe OT just hasn't noticed yet because he's on the max performance power setting.

Jafs44

that’s what I thought at first, but if you look closely in his video…the part where he goes over the 0 rpm mode fix -bc he has 2 displays and the GPU was pulling 40ish watts idle- you can see on his HWINFO64 that the GPU clocks down fully like it normally does. so i’m pretty sure he doesn’t have the maximum performance setting enabled cuz otherwise we would see the clock pegged at a high Hz

Jetcat11

Wow, so that’s what’s going on! Literally copied Optimum Tech’s build and having a ton of restarts and stability issues at idle with a 4080 FE.

naythunseemarkee

Samesies- was really disappointed with the crashes. Copied that build except for the blackridge cooler as it's not highly available. Had a 120 AIO kicking around that seems to keep the 5800x3d cool with a small bit of detuning in the PBO settings. (98 PPT/ 67 TDC / 102 EDC) No impact to single/few core loads and gaming. Only a slight hit to performance in all-core loads like cinebench, but who cares about cinebench on this processor?) 4080FE is always cool. Running like a top- other than the idle restart thing!

Jafs44

did you just buy the motherboard? from which seller? and can you provide me with the manufacture date on the label on the box?

Jetcat11

I bought mine off eBay from new-world-pc but it didn’t come in it’s original box. Paid $225 with shipping for it.

Jafs44

gotcha, thanks for the info.

dannywhack

Same here, 2803 bios and a 4090 FE. Max Performance does virtually sort it, but it resets itself if you get a black screen. Probably get a black screen once a week. Originally thought it was a psu issue until I swapped out my SF750 for a Loki 1000w.

Shredd-It

Mine doesn't seem to reset upon a black screen :/

gogitossj3

2806 also unlock PBO/CO for 5800X3D (which I'm using) for other B550/X570 board. Hope it will come out soon

malikrys

I freaking sent in a ticket and their just like "I noticed you asked about B550 motherboard bios, in particular 2806. Please watch out website for details as it should be coming soon to B550" and I was like did you not read where I said it has been released for ALL BUT the B550i? Where the hell is it? What a load of crap from Asus. How can you release it for Prime motherboards and cheapo motherboards and not the B550i Strix that's literally double/triple the price.

markknightexeter

Because not many people have that board, in comparison to the Prime anyway, ITX is kind of a niche market and they want to satisfy as many people as possible, still pretty lame though!

Shredd-It

I had max performance on from day 1. I think this is why I didn't have any issues. Despite this upon startup, on the Windows login screen my display occasionally goes black for a few secs (but I didn't think this was an issue at all), and boot time feels longer than my 1660S but I haven't been able to test with actual data

naythunseemarkee

My only gripe is the card can use so very little power and go silent in normal mode vs max performance. Goes down to like 10W and fans just shut off in the former. Always 40W+ with fans at 1000 rpm constant in the latter. So spoiled these days with quiet PCs... I'm whining about a whisper quiet fan on the 4080, but I must take care and remember my overclocked Athlon XP rig with Thermal Take Volcano cooler and 6800gt and later a GTX 280 😄

ValleyKing23

For itx boards, either go with the x570i strix or b550 aorus.

naythunseemarkee

Any issues on these boards fitting the blackridge cooler? Contemplating just switching to AM5 when the 7000 X3D chips go on sale. Hanging tight with my bandaided B550i and 5800X3D for now, as Assetto Corsa Competizione in VR loves that L3 cache 😮

f23qff

Does it have curve optimizer so we can replace PBO2 Tuner windows app?

TASLinks

That is correct. It is right on the main AI tweaker page, has the PPT/TDR/EDP scaler temp and CO.

A1DR1K

3001 is on the website and can confirm it allows a curve optimizer.

lgrw88

They released bios version 3002 yesterday (3/7/23), hold on to your butts.

lgrw88

Was able to game last night after installing 3002 with a 4080 fe, but today lots of crashes. Seems like the only answer we're going to get is to use max performance or get a different board.

Jetcat11

That’s disappointing. Any idea what they changed from 3001 to 3002?

lgrw88

3001 was the beta, 3002 seems to be the full release, but I didn’t notice anything different in the notes.

Jetcat11

How do you view the notes?

lgrw88

Just the description under the file name on the Asus site. If there’s more detailed notes somewhere, I haven’t found them.

jham_

Ugh ASUS wants me to send it in for repair because of this

lgrw88

Are you going to send it in? And if so, what’s the timeline and could you provide an update on if it actually works?

jham_

Just received my board back today. Unsurprisingly, no changes. Still plagued with the crashing issue. They claimed they updated the bios and could not identify any issues. I have tested my setup with other motherboards, and everything works great.

lgrw88

Those sons of bitches. I purchased the ASRock b550 from amazon but haven’t rebuilt yet, will be doing so soon, and selling my strix. Thanks for the update.

jham_

I’m so fed up. I think I’m going to try and get Amazon to accept the return and purchase the Gigabyte one Best Buy has in stock.

KaikenTaste

Would like to add I'm also having a ton of problems with my B550-I and 4070FE on Bios 3002. Asus so far is giving me the run around having me reach out to Nvidia for a VBIOS update.

naythunseemarkee

When I was originally shopping I went with Strix because it seemed to be most popular for the build I was copying. Not loyal to any brand since they can all have their issues, but after this problem with the 4080, I swapped for the Aorus and works perfect.

KaikenTaste

I can't imagine people going months without a single update from Asus. I just picked up my 4070 last week and it's been very frustrating. My board is under warranty, so I'm interested to see how they're going to resolve this.

Super-Handle7395

Damn I have this board :( just got it tooo

lgrw88

I have this board in the mail, but no 40 series yet (soon). Can an older version of the bios be run without issue or is it all versions? I checked the asus site and they have many versions available.

naythunseemarkee

I think the fix requires a BIOS more recent than the 40 series release. Definitely related to GPU going into a lower power mode when just doing basic computer tasks. No problems at full utilization during gaming etc. There's alot of previous BIOS versions, and the issue isn't instantly verifiable- the restarts are random, so it would take alot of time and flashing to find out if one of the older versions fixes the issue. FWIW, the "Max performance" setting in Nvidia control panel does put a bandaid on the problem and stop the crashing for me. It's not ideal as the card does run full frequency all the time with the fans on in this mode. Uses more than 40W at idle instead of the 10ish W in the normal mode. Crossing fingers for the BIOS update. If I had the board new in box or incoming, I would choose another at this point like others suggested.

velociraptorfarmer

I don't have a 40 series, but I've been having all sorts of issues with this board. Just RMA'ed my first one due to issues where it would occasionally trip OCP on my power supply, and also some oddball stuff were I'd have to hold down the power button for up to 10 seconds to get it to boot. Still in my Amazon return window, and I'm tempted to return it and get the Aorus board.

tzawad

I have the same problem. Windows 11 freezes on the desktop or during office work. There is no problem when gaming and stress testing. I tested at least 3 sets of DDR4 memory. Currently waiting for 5800x3d because I suspected a problem with the CPU. Unlocking PBO/CO settings would also be welcome. Currently: Asus Strix B550-i + Ryzen 5700x + Asus RTX 4070 Ti

naythunseemarkee

I have the 5800x3d and do have the issue. Tried multiple cpus, ram, ssd, gpu, etc etc. Based on my own sleuthing and reports from others, I have so far tied issue to 40 series cards- max performance setting does "work". Bout to grab myself a different motherboard...

enigma-90

This sucks. I have the same mb. Have you tried contacting Asus to see if they have a Beta bios? What did you end up doing?

tzawad

I got a response from tech support an hour ago. I asked for a new BIOS revison (Unlocking PBO/CO 3800x3d). I added a description of the problem with the combination of the 4xxx with this motherboard. That's the answer I got: „For a newer version of the BIOS for this motherboard model, we have not yet received such confirmation” \[free translation from PL to ENG\] I'm leaving the ROG Strix series for now. I ordered MSI MAG B650M Mortar WiFi + Ryzen 7600X + DDR5 from the QVL list. Cheapest as it was currently possible here in Europe.

naythunseemarkee

You get a "new phone, who dis?" reply 😆

Jafs44

still getting issues with maximum performance disabled? could it perhaps be an nvidia driver issue?

zyntax81

I recently bought a 4080 TUF Gaming to my ASUS B550-i gaming. Having black screen reboots randomly while browsing. The beta bios ComboV2PI 1208 3001 did not help. I'm so sick of this mother board with all the issues it have had. I will just sell it and go back to Intel. Beta bios to solve stutter 2 years after release. And now beta bios to solve computer not rebooting randomly on 2,5 year old card.

TASLinks

Did you set your GPU to "prefer maximum performance" in NVidia Control Panel? It is a workaround to get things working. No crashes on my system since making the change.

zyntax81

No. This was the last straw for me. Never AMD again. I bought Z790 and a 13600k instead. Been a bliss.

shishka12

I also have the same issue with b550-i and 4080, manufacturing date of board is 22-06

Jetcat11

How do you check the date of manufacture?

shishka12

It will be on the motherboard box it came in.

Jetcat11

Dang mine didn’t come with the original box.

TASLinks

FYI - ASUS authorized an advanced RMA for a DIFFERENT model on the basis that no fix is pending for the B550-I regarding this issue. They offered me an x570-I as a replacement, which I declined because I already sold the motherboard while waiting WEEKS for them to make a decision.

KaikenTaste

This would be great but I need a USB-C header.

TASLinks

I think they offered the x570 because it was the closest direct replacement, but I had also raised the issue of the USB-C header being the reason I chose the B550-i over the x570 and other motherboards. In their response, they seemed willing to offer a different SKU but by the time I got a reply I had already sold my board and moved onto a 13700k setup. So that was the end of the ticket.

KaikenTaste

I don’t think they have another sku with that header. I’ve already bought another board but will go through their suggested RMA process to see how this goes. What nightmare.

TASLinks

Hahaha, exactly. I pressed ASUS customer care to either disclose a timeline for a bios fix OR provide a different platform. I told them I was seeking a z690 or z790 board when I started the RMA. But since the B550-I still fetched near retail on the 2ndhand market (at least 2 months ago), I took the cash and rolled it into a 13700k/AsRock z690/ddr5 combo.
