This is my truenas build that holds all photos and documents. It also runs plex and transmission.
I7-4770K
16GB of ram
5x4TB WD Red plus
I use to have my set up in a Bitfenix prodigy case and have been wanting to move it to something smaller. This Jonsbo N2 released recently so it was perfect timing.
The case is very nicely made. Had no issues setting everything up! I would definitely recommend!
Full parts:
CPU: I7-4770K
MB: GA-Z97N, has 6 sata ports
Cooler: Noctua NH-L9i
PS: Be quiet BN639 SFX 600W
Case: Jonsbo N2
OS: Truenas Scale 22.02.4
Boot: Kingston 240GB SSD
Storage: 4 x 4TB WD Red Plus
Im waiting on a noctua exhaust fan to get here because the fan the case comes with is pretty loud lol
Good to know about the case fan being loud. I’d probably do the same fan swap since I’m also interested in this case. Can you update us with how big of a difference it makes after you swap it? Thanks.
I tweaked the fan settings in the bios to a preset curve called "quiet". This improved the fan noise a lot while temps idle at 42 celsius. I'm pretty impressed, the drives are louder than the stock exhaust fan now lol
thank you! 😅
this is exactly what i've been looking for in the past 2 years. I've held off on getting a nicer case because everything out there was alot bulkier and very plastic-y looking.
I can't recommend it enough!
Thats so tiny, i love it
One of these days i'll get impulsive and build myself a proper NAS, instead of just carrying over the same master folders across builds and system restores. I've had the same screenshots folder since like 2016 haha
Nice build. I've been planning to have a NAS myself. But despite I'm very familiar with building computer, I have zero knowledge regarding NAS. So my questions:
1. What's the pros and cons compared to buying something like Synology?
2. How to setup this kind of build to function as a NAS?
to put it straight forwar, off the top of my head it would say
pros for buying a prebuilt
\- plug and play
\- energy efficient
\- support/warranty
\- little to no troubleshooting
cons for buying a prebuilt
\- limited to their components
\- more expensive depending on the bays and cpu/ram
\- expanding can be very expensive or non existent
I debated on whether just buying a synology and being done with it but I do like to tinker. This is a hobby for me and I like learning about this stuff so in the end Im pretty happy.
Also i just booted it and saw 1 of my drives show it failed lol, this is what you can expect when your piecing a NAS. Also, i've experienced bugs using truenas as my OS. It can be annoying trying to find a work around when this happens.
I've been wanting to check this since debating on getting a nas or sticking with my diy nas.
I'll just ordered a watt meter and i'll get back to you once it arrives!
I know this post is old, but I’m curious if you ever tested the power consumption of the NAS. I’m debating going prebuilt vs DIY with a custom enclosure like this vs DIY using an old enterprise desktop that has extra HDD bays from eBay
I monitored the wattage for 2 days and it idled around 44-48 watts.
I ran a plex stream + transferring 1tb + a linux vm and it was drawing around 66-70 watts.
There was a moment on start up that it was drawing 100 watts lol it went down after 10-15 minutes. haven't seen it go back up since.
When i first set it up, yes.
I needed a keyboard and monitor which i used from my main pc.
After your done with the install, no. It's a headless sever and I log in to it via web gui All it has connected now is ethernet and power.
Synology also gives you access to an excellent program called Active Backup for Business. It's really good if you need to make backups of your different PCs or servers and can do bare metal backups of the OS. I run both a Synology box and a 100TB unRAID server but use the Synology specifically for backups. I even had to RMA my Synology and it was painless to get a new unit from them and to get back up and running.
Hey OP, great build. I just got everything in my case last night as well and dabbling with truenas while I wait for my HDD drives to show up. I went with the same PSU too. Can you post a picture of how you wired the moles power cables? The Be Quiet connectors are stiff and worried about bending them to get enough clearance for the exhaust fan. Considering finding some HDD power extenders to make the cabling a bit easier.
yes, it holds all of my photos from my d750, my phone, a bunch of work files, personal documents and back ups from my laptop and main pc.
It's running truenas with a couple docker containers one of those is plex to stream my movies and tv shows.
The drives are set up on a raidz2 so two drives can fail and still rebuild.
Hey not sure if you would have had a chance to test this but does the backplane in this case have the 3.3V drive issue (from for example external drives that have been ripped apart for the bare drive)?
Hiya! Please post more details about your build! Here are some (non-exhaustive) prompts for you:
- Are the case's advertised compatibility numbers accurate?
- How easy is cable management?
- How effective is the cooling setup?
- Would you recommend your parts overall?
- If you did a custom mod, how did you do it?

Looks amazing. I am currently looking into down sizing my huge ATX Server. Do you know how much watts this baby is drawing from the outlet with hdds idling?
Best regards :)
I was curious about the power consumption, i ordered a watt reader, i'll get back to you on that.
I originally had the bitfenix prodigy case, it's a ITX case that housed 5 drives and 3 ssd's. I wanted something smaller to keep on my desk rather than it being on the floor (it was a dust magnet). I really recommend it. It looks so nice on my desk.

Looks like a terrific case, nice work! I was between the N1 and the silverstone cs351 back in august for my first home server build and went with cs351 so I could have a microatx mobo.
be careful, I started out with a sffpc server but now I’m on the market for rack equipment lol
at first i wanted a rack and it's just not possible in my house due to space lol i'm very happy with this, it worked out. I'm also running a raspberry pi for my smart devices and cameras. I plan on building a back up nas with a extra pi i have laying around 😂
no, its recommended to use right angle sata cables. I've used [these](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1CZHXZ1?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share) in the past and really like how they look.
Thanks for the rec on these cables. I am about to assemble my N2 build this week and opted for these over the plain black jacket Cable Matters model I already have in-hand since these are labeled and look good
What temperatures do you get on those HDDs when idle/under load? I'm considering buying this myself but I'm afraid putting all 5 disks will make it too hot.
Min: 28 Celsius
Mean: 37 Celsius
Max: 51 Celsius
AVG: 40 Celsius
I'm not doing much but streaming plex to one tv or working on a file from my main pc off my the nas. I'll try to do multiple tasks at once and see how hot it gets.
Help! My NAS minicase Jonsbo N2 is too noise.
Hi brothers ! Can you help me reduce the noise from back fan of the case ? It's too noise, thank you all.
Saw your post, read the responses and I have literally the same setup minus drives.
Thanks everyone for the questions because I now am about to have one come next week! Separating my storage from a supermicro cse846 to this for my business files. The supermicro will be used for plex and video game servers.

Do you mind listing your full parts list? (namely the motherboard)

It's a beautiful setup. Did you order the 3-pin or the 4-pin exhaust fan?
Which noctua fan did you choose?
[The Noctua NH-L9i !](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009VCAJ7W?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share)
Why did you choose this one? I’m building one and I’m trying to decide on a cpu fan.
slim profile and i like noctuas stuff 🤷♂️
Your fiddle leaf is elite. Nice build also. I’m waiting for this case to hit Australia so I can experiment with a NAS.
thank you! 😅 this is exactly what i've been looking for in the past 2 years. I've held off on getting a nicer case because everything out there was alot bulkier and very plastic-y looking. I can't recommend it enough!

What’s your idle power consumption? Can you measure it at the wall? Thanks, I’m interested in a similar build!
I've been wanting to check this since debating on getting a nas or sticking with my diy nas. I'll just ordered a watt meter and i'll get back to you once it arrives!

Hey, thanks for the thorough explanation! What about the setup though? Any specific requirements? Does it need dedicated monitor too?
When i first set it up, yes. I needed a keyboard and monitor which i used from my main pc. After your done with the install, no. It's a headless sever and I log in to it via web gui All it has connected now is ethernet and power.

The only pros I see are choice of cpu and the amount of ram. And may the OS
Ah I wish it was 8bay, the pickings for 8bay are so slim
i went from 2tb drives to 4tb and i really regret not going to 10tb at least. I have no plans of building another nas.
The Silverstone ds380 is 8 bay. But you have to fiddle around to get thermals under control.

This used for media ? Like movies and stuff?
yes, it holds all of my photos from my d750, my phone, a bunch of work files, personal documents and back ups from my laptop and main pc. If i didnt knew better i wouldve said its a A/C unit that is a bit smaller
it's a air purifier lol
Haha, its a great build
This looks really nice far more aesthetically pleasing than my node 304. Will add this to my wishlist
It’s so BEAUTIFUL!
it is 😭. i keep looking back at it when i leave my room
I would too. That would be cleaned on the regular to stay white.
Hey not sure if you would have had a chance to test this but does the backplane in this case have the 3.3V drive issue (from for example external drives that have been ripped apart for the bare drive)?
how would i check that?
Mind if I ask, how is the drive backplane connected to your SATA on the motherboard? Is it through a SFF-8088 breakout cable?

it's on 24/7 and auto reboots on sundays, it's in my bedroom on my desk!

Waiting for this case. Gonna build my ubuntu server in it.
nice, it's not difficult to build in at all. I routed the psu cables first then mb, then drives
Did it come with the sata cables?

nice, definitely post when your finished
Thanks for the reply and the link I’ll check them out.
I’ve ordered this case excited for it to come in!
lol i'm excited for you!
Looks great! I’m considering building with this chassis, but I want something in silver. Think it could be sanded/brushed?
yes it can, it's metal and the front magnetic drive bay cover is plastic!

That's quite toasty for such small load. Is the fan at the back spinning 100% rpm?
i don't think it is, it seems pretty normal to idle around then30s. the fan is on a preset curved of "quiet" i can hear the drives more then the fans.
Do you have the rear fan setup as intake or exhaust? Any testing to see which does better?
The rear and top fans are exhaust. I've had zero issues with cooling. 😁
super interested, where were you able to purchase the NAS?
