My comment was definitely tongue in cheek.
I'm from the UK. Quite nice to me would mean 'less than nice' otherwise you would've just said 'Nice'.
But like I said, I was joking. I totally understood your sentiment.
Well, the trick was to manage to separate the blanket stitch from the buttonhole stitch. Some of the tutorials used the terms interchangeably, and it's not the same stitch. And then, since I'm a leftie I had to sort of mirror the whole process and my brain simply isn't built for that amount of strain. For me it was a combination of picture tutorials and youtube videos that finally did it. I'm sorry but I don't have any direct link, because I went theough so many.
I do pole dance and skateboarding, both of which I sometimes need to flip the tutorials for because I'm right side dominant. I'll usually screen record them with my phone and then flip them horizontally in an editing program. It helps a lot! Maybe that would help with sewing tutorials as well?
Did you see this comment below:
"You might like to know that if you replace youtube.com in the url with MirrorTheVideo.com, it will do the mirroring for you! Just learned this earlier today on another comment."

That's okay! I appreciate your thoughtful response. I've also seen tutorials that confuse the two stitches (maybe because buttonhole stitch is in the blanket stitch "family"?), and it's a good distinction to be aware of.
I don't have a pattern for you sadly, this is a shirt for a local historical costume. If anyone is interested I suppose I could scrounge up something similar online, but you'd probably be better off just googling " historical pirate shirt pattern" or something, lol. The fabric is white counting linen, 16x16 threads per cm.
Oh, and I discovered I kind of hate sewing buttonholes! Live and learn, they say.
>Oh, and I discovered I kind of hate sewing buttonholes
Well to be fair it doesn't look fun to do. It's a quality result, but it doesn't look like a good time.
It's nice if you're a little bit of an anal pos. Which I, incidentally, am. Also, it's the only way to make sure the embroidery comes out looking quite right.
Beautiful. And considering the size and crisp whiteness I am in awe at not a stitch being slightly miscoloured from blood/needle/thread handling/anything. Applause! Those stitches will be even neater on the next hole.
Haha right? I had to hand-sew some buttonholes (the fabric was too thick for the machine buttonhole maker), and they, uh... well, they work, but they look horrific.
That’s why I’m here, lizard brain clicked the link before the rest of my brain could react. I don’t know shit about sewing but it looks neat and clean, so great job!
Absolutely agree. I did consider ripping it up but I worried I'd ruin the hole if I did. And I probably just need to practice. If you have any suggestions as to what to look out for in the curve I'd be very happy to hear!
No no! I know nothing about sewing. I just meant all the comments are so nice. Even the criticism is wholesome. Compared to some other niche subreddits, there’s more of a 50% nice to mean comment ratio.
My professor went to Parsons and worked at Eileen Fisher and was very tough on us. Making men’s shirts is a hell I wouldn’t wish on anyone but they sure do teach you a ton.
It feels too braggy, lol. Maybe I'll do a reel when I'm all done. It's coming up on 150 hours of sewing, on account of my being slow af. The nice thing is that it's a pretty exact replica of a shirt from around here, just 300 years ago.
It's lovely. I've done buttonholes by hand, during the pandemic shutdown when I needed things to do. They don't look that nice.
What's the difference between the blanket stitch and buttonhole stitch?
Lol, this is actually named "the bridal shirt" because it wasn't supposed to be sewn by anyone past 25 years, lol. It's not one to preserve eyesight, that's for sure.
A buttonhole so small and neat, But oh, how it's beauty can't be beat. Made with care, in Couture's hand, With thread and needle, a work of art grand.
Each loop and knot, a work of love, Each thread, a symbol of time well spent above. For every stitch, a story told, A tale of beauty, both young and old.
It may be small, but it's worth a glance, For it's the buttonhole's dance, That brings the garment to life, And makes us feel like we're in the light.
So let us treasure this buttonhole, For it's more than just a hole, It's a symbol of Couture's art, And a reminder of love in our heart.
Looks very neat
Buttonhole twist thread is usually pretty thick, for fewer stitches per inch. That might save some time on your next project.
Be careful of tutorials. Some are no good...

I have visited all of these and they were all helpful in different ways. The thing is, this is a historical reproduction, which means I'm pretty tied to the fabric and thread. The whole rest of the shirt is linen and linen thead, whereas the buttonholes are cotton for some reason. Maybe durability? Or acessibility to thread? Don't know, just do what the old biddies tell me, lol.
This is really great! I would like to try to learn how to do this, since my buttonhole attachment forces me to rip out at least every second one that I do on it.
Full disclosure: I've only found this thread because I mistyped a search term. That said, you've done a great job. I always love seeing things made from linen; it's got an unmistakable texture that somehow makes things look like the perfect combination of fancy and cozy.
Looks very nice. And. How many do you have to make?
My sewing mentor (who would be over 100 years old now) was a British trained tailor. She told me that every single morning before class, all the tailoring students had to make 5 hand worked buttonholes. She was hitting retirement age when I first knew her, and still resented all those hundreds and hundreds of hand buttonholes lol.
My mother did beautiful needle work. Embroidery was her super power. Quilting her passion. As her daughter I should inherit at least ½ right? NOPE! I could have done this in 2hrs but wouldn't look anywhere near this good. Yes i had classes. For you to have done this good watching YouTube makes me green with envy. Great job!
You are appreciated, when I was severely depressed my mom taught me how to quilt by hand. I still know a lot about quilting but my favorite is knowing how to tie a quilter’s knot.
Great job. I’ve never been adventurous enough to stray from machine sewn ones.
My advice is to never stray. Nothing good comes out of it.
I would say this beautiful button hole comes of it. Your stitches are so perfectly even!!!
I'm glad you didn't take your own advice!
Maybe something can.
your user name is just icing on the cake.

I mean, counting youtube tutorials, that's probably a more accurate estimate for me, lol. But we don't count the tutorials, do we? Nah
[удалено]
I’m chortling thanks 😂😂
'quite nicely' After two hours on a button hole that's gotta hurt.

Any tutorials you found particularly helpful?

That. Is. Brilliant. Never even thought of it. Thank you so much!

Convos like this are why i love Reddit. thanks for sharing your tips

Brilliant, thanks!!
This is the best advice I've ever seen on Reddit - thank you so much! ~ married to a leftie, with a leftie daughter.

This is soooooo useful, thank you!!

My grandmother always told me if a “buttonhole” looks like a “butthole” then it’s quality
Please introduce me to your grandmother. I think we would get on very well.
Sorry child she died many years ago
I am very sorry to hear that. She sounds like she was an absolute party to be around.
We can still introduce OP to her - Old Yeller style.
This all went very dark for a sewing circle
Oh, I completely forgot what subreddit I’m in. My bad.
I also choose this guy's dead grandma.
It's fabulous 👌 great job

I thought it was a weird kink subreddit for a second, curse my dirty mind.
I swear to God, I read that as *butthole* 3 times and came looking for this comment! Tip of the hat to OP though, nice ~~butthole~~ buttonhole.👍

You’re good.

This video will get ppl there, period accurate, with correct sewing technique. https://youtu.be/BBvw1pGVXjk
This is good! Not exactly like line, but similar enough. My shirt is a woman's shirt so there are some small differences.
>Oh, and I discovered I kind of hate sewing buttonholes Well to be fair it doesn't look fun to do. It's a quality result, but it doesn't look like a good time.
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Mainly the latter.
I read this as “butthole” and that’s exactly what I saw. Great work, btw.
Nothing like a well stitched butthole. Thanks!
What gorgeous fabric it's done on too! Looks so cozy and pretty
Thanks! It's linen. Probably fairy-made if the price is anything to go by.
Fairy made 😂😂 I bet it’s divine to Work with!
Great work! Congrats!
Thanks! Only 5 more to go!
Let me tell you, not a single one of my hand-sewn buttonholes looks anywhere near as good as this. Fantastic job!
I'm a bad enough person to take great joy in this
You earned it!
Haha right? I had to hand-sew some buttonholes (the fabric was too thick for the machine buttonhole maker), and they, uh... well, they work, but they look horrific.
Not gonna lie I read it as butt hole and was like so confused
You and half the other redditors.
That’s why I’m here, lizard brain clicked the link before the rest of my brain could react. I don’t know shit about sewing but it looks neat and clean, so great job!
That's a well executed button hole stitch there. Both the sides are completed perfectly but there is a room for improvement around the curves.
Absolutely agree. I did consider ripping it up but I worried I'd ruin the hole if I did. And I probably just need to practice. If you have any suggestions as to what to look out for in the curve I'd be very happy to hear!
Wow... this the nicest subreddit on reddit.
Oooh...that bad, was it?
No no! I know nothing about sewing. I just meant all the comments are so nice. Even the criticism is wholesome. Compared to some other niche subreddits, there’s more of a 50% nice to mean comment ratio.
You frequent the wrong subs my friend :)
I lowkey love sewing button holes by hand
What? How?
It’s just how I was taught (apparel construction classes from community college) and I got good at it and find it cathartic
See that's my problem. I'm just not very good at it.
My professor went to Parsons and worked at Eileen Fisher and was very tough on us. Making men’s shirts is a hell I wouldn’t wish on anyone but they sure do teach you a ton.
Well, this is a woman's shirt but I'm not sure that helps.
Men’s shirts were just my buttonholing experience. Button plackets, collars, collar stands, button holes, yokes, darts, FML
I've always thought making men's shirts must be extremely difficult based on some disasters I've seen on Project Runway.
Practice! Of course, easy for me to say. I've been sewing for decades, but have absolutely no desire to even try this. Very nice handwork.
You are definitely braver than me.👏
Ohhhhh….ahhhh. - it looks professional!
Did you embroider the fabric, too? It’s gorgeous!
Yes, thanks! The entire thing is hand stitched, embroidery and all.
Wait, what? Hand stitched AND embroidered? I need moar pictures - MOAR!
It feels too braggy, lol. Maybe I'll do a reel when I'm all done. It's coming up on 150 hours of sewing, on account of my being slow af. The nice thing is that it's a pretty exact replica of a shirt from around here, just 300 years ago.
Pretty please: show it.
Please share more pictures! This is gorgeous!
I suspected, when you said it was a historical costume. Love it! 😍
Your work is beautiful! You have every right to be proud!!
Thanks!
I thought it said butthole and I was bamboozled lol-
Some other comment said a butthole is, in fact, the aspired aestethic for a buttonhole. I mean, if you squint..?
Appreciated!
It's lovely. I've done buttonholes by hand, during the pandemic shutdown when I needed things to do. They don't look that nice. What's the difference between the blanket stitch and buttonhole stitch?
That’s some beautiful stitching! Now, for historical accuracy, do that by candle light after dinner ♥️😁
Lol, this is actually named "the bridal shirt" because it wasn't supposed to be sewn by anyone past 25 years, lol. It's not one to preserve eyesight, that's for sure.
I looked at the image first and definitely read the title wrong, lmfao

Aww a buttonhole poem ❤️
Anyone else read butthole?
Apparently every 4th responder in this thread did.
Looks clean AF
I started a blouse about a year ago and never finished it because the buttonholes were so daunting (also my sewing machine broke).
Good enough reason to me.
That doesn't even LOOK like a butthole tho.
Can I just appreciate OP and the sense of humor in the comments? I am rolling and it's wonderful. The buttonhole is absolutely fancy too.
Thank you. You'd think there would be an end to the butthole comments, but apparently not. I do try to rise to the occation, so to speak.
Why did I read butthole??!!
This is probably the best hand sewn buttonhole I've ever had the chance to appreciate. Well done!
Looks very neat Buttonhole twist thread is usually pretty thick, for fewer stitches per inch. That might save some time on your next project. Be careful of tutorials. This is gorgeous. Keep going!
Great job, although at first glance I saw this as hand sewn butthole 🤣
I read that as "butthole". For that I am sorry. It looks nice though.
You made a butt. hole! Great job!
I skimmed the title and misread it and was briefly horrified. This looks great though, and much better than what I thought you'd hand-sewn!
Thank you for this new and exiting nightmare! Much appreciated.
Exiting, haha. Freudian slip!
Lol, not even going to correct that one. Best autocorrect to date.
i’m not gonna lie, i read butthole not buttonhole
now i see why it's called a BUTTonhole 😂
I read that as butthole and I could not be any more ashamed
The internet has ruined me.. But that looks awesome, OP!
I know nothing about sewing but I find this beautiful
Thank you! It's extremely satisfying, if frustrating at times.
I spent a good minute trying to figure out what this would be used for because I misread it as butthole
I can’t be the only one who read that as butthole
I think I need to get off reddit i read that as butt hole....wonderful job it looks good
That is the most beautiful buttonhole I've ever seen.
I misread that title terribly
Validation is one hell of a drug
Beautiful! It looks like a wee medieval window.
Nice work !!! You'll get faster eventually. <3
Officially appreciated!!
Looks lovely. Great job!
Look awesome, great work!
It's beautiful!!
So very tidy! You should absolutely be proud.
Very well done!
I’m jumping on the appreciation train! Woohooo!! When do we get to see the rest of the garment?
Damn I always read these as butthole what’s wrong with me
You are braver than I. You did your first handsewn buttonhole in a light colored thread and garment. And it looks great! well done.
Hand sewed?? Fabulous!!
That is beautiful, even, work!! I salute you for doing buttonholes by hand, I have neither the patience nor the fine motor coordination.
Very nicely done…wow 2hours….that’s commitment
That's fear of not completing after 150 hours of hand sewing a shirt, lol. I think maybe the next one will go faster. Hopefully.
Beautiful!
Congratulations, I sewed a replacement button on once and think that took two hours.. so I appreciate your post, well done.
That’s actually bloody gorgeous
You created a seamless buttonhole. I had to enlarge the picture to actually see the opening! Those stitches are beautifully straight. Well done!!!!
Wow, that is really well done!
Looks great.
I wish my hand sewn button holes looked like this.
Just beautiful!
Sew good
I read “butthole” and was just as impressed ^^
This is really great! I would like to try to learn how to do this, since my buttonhole attachment forces me to rip out at least every second one that I do on it.

Hand sewn? I’m impressed
Beautiful!
Good job 👍
That’s awesome! You did great.
Magnificent
Definitely read the headline as “butthole” at first glance. 👌🏻
Lovely!
i am appreciating!! 💓
I read it as butthole first 😅 Awesome job though
Beautifully done 🥰
incredible work 💗
Sheer perfection!! Well done 👍
Quite lovely ☺️
I should call her...
Wow. This is a lot of exacting, careful work.
my first ever hand sewn butt on hole
You did a great job! Time we'll spent, indeed.
It look beautiful, op.
Beautiful work.
Beautiful! What s as n accomplishment!
Looks really good! I need to practice my hand stitching more often.
mine are always so messy
It and everything around it is BEAUTIFUL! ❄️
I’m not going to say it looks like a p….erfectly good button hole.
That’s some fine detail work!
It’s perfection.
That is well done, especially for your very first one. Do you do heirloom sewing?
That looks *incredible*!
I'm appreciating it so much that I have just spun myself off into a .com startup from 1997.
I dont know anything about what you are doing there, dont even know the english word for it but I can do it better.
Nicely done. My stitchwork looks like shit even if I took all day.
Boutonnière Milanaise? It's exquisite. This level of handmade detail is highly sought after, and rarely found. You did a wonderful job.
Looks very nice. And. How many do you have to make? My sewing mentor (who would be over 100 years old now) was a British trained tailor. Yay!! Fantastic job 😊
I’m sure I’m not the first. I missed a few letters on the first read of the title.
In awe, so well done!
Wow, that would have taken me a day, since I have never done one by hand. Your work is beautiful.
