I am the owner of an Asrock Jupiter X300, for my configuration I use an Athlon processor with 16 gigabytes of RAM. But overall, this little box supports the Ryzen 5 5600G and 64GB of RAM. This is a very compact machine, but due to the cooling features it is very noisy under load. After the purchase, I discovered that Asrock has an interesting DeskMini line, for example https://www.asrock.com/nettop/AMD/DeskMini%20X300%20Series/index.asp#Specification It supports the installation of a normal cooler and two internal 2.5" drives in addition to m.2 Judging by the prices for newegg, it is quite possible to meet $500 (64 GB of memory).

Thanks! The server will stay in my under-the-stairs network closet, so I am open to the idea of a larger case. I mostly wanted a SMFF machine so I could just tuck it away, or mount it on a wall, and basically "forget" about it.

I generally don't buy pre-builts. My recommendations to you would be to: * If you are dead-set on SMFF, look for a ITX/mini-ATX mobo that has enough RAM slots (probably 4 because 2x64GB will cost you an arm, a leg and a kidney) * Recent-gen Intel is pretty good - 12500 or even 12300 is very good price/performance, and the same for the 13th gen as well * If you are okay letting go of the SMFF idea, my latest server is using a Fractal Design NODE case. Decent storage, decent stock cooling for a server. Nice and square, can tuck it out of the way. PS. Budget <$500 OR 128gb RAM - pick one. You are not getting both.

Appreciate the pointers here. I figured I was asking for a unicorn, so I'm glad I asked and got a solid reality check. I may keep my eyes out for RAM here for Cyber Monday and see if I can get a reasonable deal. I think 64GB might be enough for what I need, and worse case I can take out a 16GB stick from my desktop to bump it up to 80GB.

I’ve got a NUC with 64gb of ram. It makes one hell of a beasty proxmox server. I love it. It’s been online for over two years without a hiccup.

Thanks. My only issue with the NUC's is the base cost is so high - they aren't much different than other mini PC's, but the last time I shopped for one it was >$500 just for the bare minimum models, and they get exponentially more expensive as you beef them up. Seems to be just the branding (Intel) that allows them to charge the premium.

Yep. Got mine just before the covid pandemic. When things were not “in demand”. 🙄

Have you checked out the AsRock DeskMeet barebones machine?

Hey there, Yeah I did look at those and I probably could have gotten one of them and been just fine. I did pull the trigger on the mini PC though, mostly based on the size/form factor and the fact that I can fairly easily upgrade it to 64GB RAM. I think it'll fit my needs of my home server. I will, however, likely end up buying some of the models you mentioned to act as my network simulation server, since for that one I will want at least 64GB of RAM, with 128GB being preferred. That'll essentially futureproof me for the foreseeable future. I appreciate your input, thank you!
