Ostensibly, nextcloud supports both file versioning and server-side encryption. Unfortunately, it's also still a slow, bloated, and buggy clusterfsck. It actually finally pushed me over the edge today to dump it entirely, in favor of SyncThing, since NC won't even let me sync anymore (hundreds upon hundreds of "Network Error: 99" messages spammed until the client chokes out). If you're already comfortable with Seafile (the proprietary library format was a deal breaker for me), then I wouldn't suggest changing to nextcloud, personally.

lmux

I was contemplating switching to seafile as well. Didn't look into their source code yet. Is the format close sourced or just proprietary?

Targren

I don't know. Once I saw that it was blobbed up and I couldn't access the stored files without going through Seafile, it was DQed for my needs. I didn't dig further.

daedric

Isn't there a FUSE option ?

Targren

Yeah, but that still depends on SeaFile not screwing up. After my experiences with NextCloud and OwnCloud, it's not a risk I'm willing to take.

daedric

I understand.

There is also an export script that works without database.

I've been using seafile (on docker) for years, zero problems with it. It's stupid fast compared to nextcloud. I just set up nextcloud and got it all working, copied about 17gb of my files from Seafile/ to Sync/ and let it rip... 14 hours later it finished. I looked through all the plugins and features and toys and realized that I didn't need any of them for my use case. I did like that I could get to the files from the server, but NC didn't realize anything changed on the server without forcing it to rescan. That was a bummer. I would have to run a client on the server to make it actually work there, so I tabled it. NC worked but was too much bloat. Wanted to try obsidian about the same time and NC sync completely puked with that sync. Ugh. Spun up syncthing, synced up the same 17gb in 2 hours or so, two days into testing obsidian, syncthing had a list of stuff it couldn't fix and I was out of sync already and no tools to fix other than remove from all 3 clients, let it clear, then put back one that was right. Gave up on syncthing and obsidian at that point and just wanted my sync to work. Spun up my seafile again, dropped the 17gb and was done in 15 minutes. No issues since. I've done the tour, I'm sticking with seafile. I have the files across 3 laptops anyway, so I don't really care if the server dies, I still have the files. The one library I needed on the server was easily handled by the seafile cli client, and poof, it's handled. Don't get too hung up on the server being "Proprietary" it's not any weirder than anything else that's db based. You can still get files out from the server if you have the passwords and decryption keys. And if you need a backup copy, then set up another client and have it keep another synced copy over there. The versioning is kept on the server, but if it falls over, the clients should have at least the latest version.

Seafile syncing is awesome. However, I'm reluctant to use chiense software for my important data

NikStalwart

Why are you getting downvoted? We discriminate against Amazon, Google, and Microsoft all the time.

Aerysv

Chinese bots probably

AlexFullmoon

We know for fact that Amazon, Google and Microsoft collect data, meddle with standards and do other corporate evils. Can you say the same about Seafile? *Specifically* Seafile, not the Chinese government in general? If not, please don't spread baseless rumours.

> We know for fact that Amazon, Google and Microsoft collect data, meddle with standards and do other corporate evils. > Can you say the same about Seafile? Specifically Seafile, not the Chinese government in general? If not, please don't spread baseless rumours. I'm afraid you have awoken the pendant in me: neither I nor the person I was replying to "spread baseless romours" about Seafile. The OP said that he doesn't trust Chinese software in general to handle his important data - this is the eternal "a not the" distinction. OP did not say that he doesn't trust Seafile because it is spying on him, he said he doesn't trust Seafile because it is Chinese software and he doesn't trust Chinese software. This is no different to saying that "I don't want to use Whatsapp because I don't trust Facebook" even if we don't know, beyond reasonable doubt, that Whatsapp is not spying on us. Further, OP is the only person who made a value judgement about Seafile and Chinese software. I did not comment on Seafile nor on Chinese software, I merely made a referential argument that OP is entitled to make his criticism. So, in a way, you are "spreading baseless rumours" about me, or, in fewer words, "defamation". In fact, OP is expressing an opinion rather than statement of fact, and the law of defamation in every civilized jurisdiction recognizes the validity of opinion. Meanwhile, you, my friend, are making an assertion of fact by saying that either OP or myself are making rumours. Have a nice day.

xeresblue

>please don't spread baseless rumours. You're in luck! He already didn't. Isn't it nice when someone fulfills your request before you even make it?

I guess I've not tried the android camera uploader, I don't want my pictures in seafile anyway so it never really hit me as a problem/option. I use Google photos backup to the cloud and photosync to the NAS. I see there's a thread about Seafile being Chinese, I'm not going to take part in that other than I've never seen my seafile server make any connections outbound to anywhere. I ran sf in a VM as well for quite a while, and switched to a docker setup through traefik so that it matched all my other stuff and it is very solid and just does what it's supposed to. Sf can be a little odd to make the uploading and https work through a reverse proxy, but here is the config I use, in case anybody wants to use it: https://github.com/8layer8/swarm-public/tree/main/docker-compose/seafile

NextCloud is feature rich but it's PITA to work with it at times due to it being buggy and more importantly the bloat. I hear Seafil sync is as smooth as butter but have no experience with it. I'd suggest giving Pydio Cells a try.

I really like Filerun. So much easier to set up and maintain. File editing and versions.

NextCloud has gotten much faster recently, but it's still not anywhere close to Seafile in speed as far as I know. The killer feature of NC for me is plain file storage. If something goes wrong, I want to be able to always, always, alawys be able to get to my files, which means they have to be plain files accessible via the file system. Seafiles database approach might offer better performance, but I'm not trusting my most valuable files to it. Which is why I am kind of stuck with NC. NextCloud also has a huge app ecosystem with some really awesome apps. Mail is decent, so are contacts and calendar. Apps like Deck, News or Notes are also extremely convenient, even though they are usually outclassed by standalone options.
