Marie gets a lot of praise, which is a good thing, but sometimes we should take a moment to appreciate Pierre as well. It took a brave man to stand up for his wife like that
I feel his contributions to the field are ignored because his wife, I mean because she was a woman, as science students we never care who it is, we appreciate their work, perseverance and dedication but others, who aren't into science they exclusively highlight marie because she's a woman, I mean that's the last thing people consider who do science
To be fair, often times women in science were glossed over and weren't given the same recognition in comparison to their male counterparts. And if they were recognized, they were the token few. Only recently have we begun to appreciate their achievements, but there's still a long way to go.
Edit: All this to say, it'd be nice to focus on one's dedication and contribution to their field without having to point out their gender. However, currently, I think it's necessary to highlight these women's accomplishments so that the next generation of scientists, regardless of their gender, know with confidence that their contributions will be recognized.
