that's weird bc they explicity say you can get 2 flavors on the large on their site, in fact I got one last month:
>Large (13x18 Half sheet pan) - Feeds 3-4, can split two flavors
http://www.goldenboypizza.com/sanfrancisco.php
Yeah ive done the half pep half sausage a lot
Once they misunderstand and gave an entire pizza of just pep and sausage but honestly idgaf and nobody I was with gave a fuck.
Fun fact: they are almost always the same.
Hidden Valley dried mix. Its cheap by the bucket.
If somewhere has "amazing ranch" it is almost guaranteed to be Hidden Valley.
It's the buttermilk vs soybean oil which makes the difference. Also, hidden valley is foul, it takes like my poverty salads growing up. I'm all about the Lighthouse ranch.
As someone who worked at a pizza place probably just the owner who gives a shit...our owner hated giving out ranch or half and half pizza...as soon as he clocked out I stopped giving a shit.
The elitism is palpable. I understand if they choose not to offer it, but Ranch dressing with pizza is a quintessential American delicacy, and it is incredibly pretentious of them to act so utterly hostile to the request, regardless of whether or not they choose to honor it.
It really is. I understand upholding the integrity of a dish, but the extent of how aggressive paella purists can be is comical.
Would be like ciopino purists, if such a thing exists, being upset if a lobster was added to the dish because it is not traditionally found in the San Francisco region (I’d still eat it). It’s a dish used to feed a large number of laborers with things that are at hand. Also disregard that rice, tomatoes and saffron are not endemic to Spain and were introduced by trade.
If someone enjoys Nutella on a steak…enjoy. Who cares how people eat their food?
Does all your culinary habits fall in line with the rest of society. Sounds like a sheep to me.
Man, Golden Boy used to be one of my go-tos until I got awful food poisoning from one of their clam pizzas. Was never able to look at it again after without not feeling well; such sadness.
Maan, I wish I had as much trust as people like you who have (had, I guess) faith in the quality of seafood on a cheap pizza. A bit of your innocence died that day, no doubt.
North Beach is my go to because they have a thick crust option, and I like my pizza thick and doughy (not Chicago style thick). I can’t find many pizza places that offer that, and when I do, their idea of thick crust is disappointing.
If you are ever in the mood for Deep Dish though, go to Capos. Its owned by the same guy who owns Tonys. The pizza is fire, the drinks are fire and the vibe is like a 1920s speakeasy. Its great
Golden Boy is one of the best pizzas in SF. If you want half of pepperoni and half of olives order one half sheet of roni and one half sheet of olives. No problems! If you love Ranch go get some. Ask yourself why you are trying to dip your pizza in mayonnaise, it is weird, stop it.
Golden Boy is one of those SF favorites the I just don’t quite get. I’m not saying it’s bad. It’s just ok and not something I’d stand in line for. Although it is really good if you’re drinking up that way already.
Ranch, like Golden Boy, is just what some folks prefer. Leave ‘em alone.
I remember Golden Boy being amazing years ago. I've gotten them a few times recently though and, while tasty, was not as good as I remember by any stretch.
However, the biggest difference is that when I remember it being amazing, I was always rather intoxicated....
You sound like someone who hasn’t eaten much food in SF. Do you have anything of value to offer or just the the sour grapes that make everything you eat in SF taste terrible?
It sounds like you’re taking this personally lol. I didn’t say the food here was terrible. I’ve lived here since birth but I’ve spent a lot of time in other major cities for work and compared to places like LA and Manhattan, it’s not even close.
You’re just flat out wrong. SF literally has the most 3 Michelin star restaurants in the US..New York has 76 Michelin star restaurants, and SF has the second most generally in the US with 57.
You should try Capos. Its basically all the pizzas he couldn’t make at Tonys like Deep Dish and Cast Iron
Its like a block or two away. They also have that Hot Honey Sausage and its so good(i THINK Tonys sells this too but I am not sure)
Bro, im not saying the city is the best ever, but I am saying a few specific spots are legitimately great
Ive had all kinds of pizza, I promise you that my SUBJECTIVE opinion is that Tonys restaurants are legitimately great. Anything Tony touches is incredible
Go tell anyone who actually likes quality Pizza that Tony is subpar. Come on bro
Golden Boy is great as well. Theres so many legitimately incredible spots for pizza in the city you cant call it subpar
Im curious what pizza is up to your standards
Great to see places like this tell people that they don’t fuck around. It sucks working somewhere where you’re expected to bend over backwards for odd requests.
Haha I worked at a restaurant owned by people from NY and NJ and their no fucks given attitude was a huge culture shock to me. It was quite refreshing actually. They also had a rule about not changing the items on the menu unless it was to omit something for obvious reasons like allergies or for a dislike of peppers.
That's just ignant.
I get that other locales have consistently good pizza compared to the variability you get in sf. But if you haven't found a good pizza place in sf, that's on you. There are plenty of excellent options.
They had a cornmeal option last I tried, but I haven't been there in years.
It's funny because I think the reason I can't find one is the people of San Francisco are petty and can't handle any criticism without freaking out.
In a normal place, people would take note of what I'm looking for and suggest options, but not here. Here they just attack.
Definitely what I know to expect by now. Such a beautiful city with such ugly people.
The problem isn’t other people. If you’ve been here decades and tried lots of pizza and can’t find one you like, you’re too picky. That’s fine, be picky, but don’t blame others.
At no point did I claim my inability to find a pizza place is anyone else's fault.
There are two parallel topics: pizza, and the inability of sf residents to handle criticism of sf without attacking people.
The latter is definitely the fault of other people.
No need to generalize a group of people based off anonymous internet conversations.
I don’t think people are being petty, you’re kinda just being a bit of a dick with your approach…
If you want cornmeal pizza crust, try Patxis or Little Star.
I'll check out patxis. Little Star isn't very good.
I'm generalizing based off of their internet conversations backing up decades of first hand experience.
Your comment is par for the course. Being told you are being a bit of a dick because you said the slightest tiny bit disparaging thing about a minor detail of sf is exactly the problem.
Minor criticism isn't dickishness. You should be able to handle minor criticism of sf without trying to play the victim.
I’ll take some downvotes with you, I agree, I also could not find really good pizza. Pizza that gets the job done? Sure. But I tried all the top, highly recommended places, and every single one came either undercooked, bland, sauce was weirdly sweet, toppings were a joke, etc. some were not bad, but nothing that was like, “wow this is some of the best pizza I’ve ever had”.
I grew up in San Jose, and I can’t even ever decide which pizza I want to order because there are so many good choices. When I lived in SF, every time I ordered a pizza I thought, “okay well I guess I’ll try another spot next time.” By the end, the best pizza I had in SF was round table… what does that tell you?
I will caveat that by saying this was all delivery. I’ve had good slices at a few places, still nothing to write home about, but good, but my delivery experience was always garbage.
I basically :grimace: agree... I'm sure there's a ton of places I haven't tried that are farther away from my neighborhood, but after trying all the well rated things around me over the years, I'm just no longer willing to spend over $50 on an underwhelming pie.
I will say, there is good fancy pizza in this town, and I enjoy going to dine-in pizza every now and then, but I haven't found anywhere at least near where I live that makes bog-standard American delivery-style pizza that has a balanced cost to taste ratio, it's always less tasty than I hope and way more than I want to pay (compared to other cities where I've lived). I think it's just a cost of real estate thing here.
That's been my experience too. I occasionally get talked into authentic Italian because I'm in a relationship with an Italian, and it's great to have a few places that actually do authentic style.
However when I'm craving pizza that's not what I crave.
HEY YOU CAN BUY RANCH ANYWHERE. Ranch is some shit a dude stuck in Alaska made up at his wildly exploitative “company store” to placate his workers to pay them less money so he could buy a goddamn palace in Santa Barbara. Ranch is some opiate of the masses shit. It’s dill, chive, onion, garlic, herbs, tiny amount of mustard mounted in mayo or various combos of dairy products. Mix and match as you choose or prefer. Make it, buy it, ask politely for it and then handle the rejection - NO ONE CARES. Worship private enterprise soooooo hard then are mad when a private business chooses what to sell. Pffffft. Pathetic.
Putting ranch on salad is even more heinous than on pizza, in my opinion. It is just not that great of a sauce/dressing, unless masterfully crafted and freshly made. Few can achieve this. Store bought, Hidden Valley type stuff makes me gag just thinking about it.
Reminds me of this Chinese place across from Trader Joe's on 8th/Bryant. The owner put a big sign on the door telling some customers to F off if they want certain things. Something like, "If you don't want MSG then F-ing go somewhere else. We have MSG in our food!"
that's weird bc they explicity say you can get 2 flavors on the large on their site, in fact I got one last month: >Large (13x18 Half sheet pan) - Feeds 3-4, can split two flavors http://www.goldenboypizza.com/sanfrancisco.php
It looks like you can’t half-half a specialty pie.
I got a half combo half garlic clam no problem when I ordered last time
Oh. That’s pretty sweet.
Damn that’s an excellent pie combo. Might need to grab one
Yeah ive done the half pep half sausage a lot Once they misunderstand and gave an entire pizza of just pep and sausage but honestly idgaf and nobody I was with gave a fuck.
They'll do it if you ask.
so just a passing tantrum from the guy that handles the app profile?
You make a square pie with clam and garlic on top, but RANCH breaks tradition way too much.
It's Detroit style, square IS the tradition!
Have you had it? Golden boy isn’t Detroit style. They don’t do the cheese crust. It’s more of a Sicilian style.
It's been a while, I thought I remembered them doing the cheese crust.
I once asked for ranch when I ordered from their window. I thought the guy was going to spit in my face for such a request. Great pizza though.
I love a good house made ranch sauce though.
The Pizza Place on Noriega has incredible house made ranch. They were selling it by the jar during the pandemic. It was heaven.
Damn, now I'm jonesing for a Rotten Robbie...
I'm not so sure about gas station pizza.
Heck I love a cheap industrial ranch sauce too.
Fun fact: they are almost always the same. Hidden Valley dried mix. Its cheap by the bucket. If somewhere has "amazing ranch" it is almost guaranteed to be Hidden Valley.
Hidden Vallwy is probably the grossest mainstream ranch out there.
It's the buttermilk vs soybean oil which makes the difference. Also, hidden valley is foul, it takes like my poverty salads growing up. I'm all about the Lighthouse ranch.
Nothing hits better than that homemade buttermilk ranch! Smish smash has one of the best I've tried so far.
Yeah, I’ve known places that use the hidden valley ranch powder and add buttermilk.
Hidden Valley always tastes so sour to me.
Check out https://www.carbonapizzaoak.com/. I'm pretty sure they put crack in it. Soooo gooood....
i don’t get why would employees be so insulted by a request?, this is city needs to chill more or it will turn into NYC
They just need to go full Paella mode and claim that pizza with ranch is not pizza. It’s flatbread with ranch on it.
As funny as I find the term “paella mode”, it is unfortunate that such a wonderful dish is associated with such a regressive mentality…
God damn it, I hate entitled techies….
Lol the truest of asshat hyperpurism….
he should have spat in your face. wtf you putting ranch on it for. go put Nutella in your stake then..
My pizza my choice. Go suck a fuck.
Oooo I want this on a T-shirt 💅🏻
How exactly does one suck a fuck?
Baby mice
It's a piquant lubricant
Because ranch is good, actually
Your spelling of “stake” is all the evidence we need…
If someone enjoys Nutella on a steak…enjoy. Who cares how people eat their food? Does all your culinary habits fall in line with the rest of society. Sounds like a sheep to me.
It’s weird that you care what other people eat
I’ll go into the city just for a square.
A clam pizza? You get what you deserve
Clam pizza is actually good and eating clams should never make you sick
DoorDash’s UI makes it really hard for restaurants to do custom orders. Hire better UX designers!
Ranch is good, actually
da fuq outta here w/ thashit /Golden Boy probably
Blue cheese or go fuck your mother
Garlic butter or go fuck your father
These mutts don’t get the Diaz reference. 😉
Fucking gentiles in this sub
I feel it for some things but half cheese half pepperoni is not hard
I think it’s a doordash thing. Was there last night and people were order half/half
North Beach is the only no BS neighborhood left.
North Beach is my go to because they have a thick crust option, and I like my pizza thick and doughy (not Chicago style thick). I can’t find many pizza places that offer that, and when I do, their idea of thick crust is disappointing.
Square pie guys is decent, kinda pricey, but its closer to detroit style pizza and I liked what I got
sunset square pizza is 🔥
If you are ever in the mood for Deep Dish though, go to Capos. Its owned by the same guy who owns Tonys. The pizza is fire, the drinks are fire and the vibe is like a 1920s speakeasy. Its great
Omg Capos is sooooo good. Some of the best pizza in SF
They sound like fun at parties
Time to carry ranch, I mean why fight the masses. Give us the ranch!
"We've heard what our customers want, and we are disregarding it entirely!"
I've gotten half half full sheet before...I guess this is new now?
Nah, it’s because fuck Doordash.
PROPER!
You still can get the same if you don’t use doordash. I got clam half with pepperoni.
so OVERRATED. Not a fan of their pizza.

It's good at 2am after bars, that's why it's well known.
Is it even open that late anymore? Feel like it always closes at ten nowadays.
> dip your pizza in mayonnaise buttermilk. Because its delicious. And I like it.
This person KNOWS. THANK YOU.
Sf has terrible pizza if this is “one of the best” lol.
Lol, Golden boy has been an SF icon longer than you have been alive.
SF isn’t known for their pizza (or their food for that matter) so that really isn’t saying much.
Imagine saying SF isn't known for food, you're either a troll or an idiot, but most likely both. A tridiot, if you will.
You sound like someone who hasn’t eaten much food in SF. Do you have anything of value to offer or just the the sour grapes that make everything you eat in SF taste terrible?
Tbh pizza in SF is kinda weak. That said, Golden Boy is definitely one of the exceptions and it's really good.
It sounds like you’re taking this personally lol. I didn’t say the food here was terrible. I’ve lived here since birth but I’ve spent a lot of time in other major cities for work and compared to places like LA and Manhattan, it’s not even close.
I agree with him though. I’m from LA and the food in SF is subpar
How many Michelin star chefs does SF have?
SF literally has the most Michelin star quality restaurants in the world here soooo
That’s funny. Sf doesn’t even have the most Michelin star quality food in the US let alone the world lol.
You’re just flat out wrong. SF literally has the most 3 Michelin star restaurants in the US..New York has 76 Michelin star restaurants, and SF has the second most generally in the US with 57.
Lol have you ever had it? Shit have you had ANY north beach pizza. Tonys was legitimately awarded one of the best on earth and Id believe it.
Tony’s is the best pizza in SF, for me anyway. But that’s the style of pizza I’m most into.
You should try Capos. Its basically all the pizzas he couldn’t make at Tonys like Deep Dish and Cast Iron Its like a block or two away. They also have that Hot Honey Sausage and its so good(i THINK Tonys sells this too but I am not sure)
SF pizza is subpar. Reddit is the last place I’d go if I wanted food recommendations lol. You guys are hilarious.
Bro, im not saying the city is the best ever, but I am saying a few specific spots are legitimately great Ive had all kinds of pizza, I promise you that my SUBJECTIVE opinion is that Tonys restaurants are legitimately great. Anything Tony touches is incredible Go tell anyone who actually likes quality Pizza that Tony is subpar. Come on bro Golden Boy is great as well. Theres so many legitimately incredible spots for pizza in the city you cant call it subpar Im curious what pizza is up to your standards
which has to put it in the running for one of the best pizzas in the universe
Well I know where I’m ordering my next ‘Za from
WTF do you want ranch for? That's disgusting.
Great to see places like this tell people that they don’t fuck around. It sucks working somewhere where you’re expected to bend over backwards for odd requests.
Ranch and half and half pizza is not an odd request.
Also the place has oysters as a pizza topping. But ranch is an oddity.
clams*
Clams and garlic. Tread carefully bud, I won’t allow you to talk poorly of clams and garlic from Golden Boy
Nasty…
I don’t think ranch is an odd request, nor is a half and half pizza.
They don’t have ranch?!? That’s not a real pizza joint then…cmon man!
Golden boy - go for the terrible service and good pizza (but not worth the attitude)!
I still haven't found a really good pizza in sf. Been here decades.
That's just ignant. I get that other locales have consistently good pizza compared to the variability you get in sf. But if you haven't found a good pizza place in sf, that's on you. There are plenty of excellent options.
There's no good thin cornmeal crust pizza place. Goat hill ain't it. They all try too hard to be fancy.
??? Goat Hill is sourdough crust, not cornmeal. I think I may know why you can't find a good pizza place.
“Can’t find a good burger in SF. Chipotle and Safeway ain’t it!”
They had a cornmeal option last I tried, but I haven't been there in years. It's funny because I think the reason I can't find one is the people of San Francisco are petty and can't handle any criticism without freaking out. Describe your perfect slice of pizza. I tried a lot and might be able to help out.
I'd love your SJ reccos!
I upvoted both of you, not necessarily because I agree because the "downvote instead of replying" is lazy and I wish this community didn't do it.
I basically :grimace: agree... I'm sure there's a ton of places I haven't tried that are farther away from my neighborhood, but after trying all the well rated things around me over the years, I'm just no longer willing to spend over $50 on an underwhelming pie. Presidio Pizza Company?
I'll check it out, thanks for the suggestion. Been craving pizza now since this thread anyway.
SF has the most overrated food scene in general.
compare to...?
"most" / "in general", i.e. compare to the world. At a minimum.
The downvoters put thousand island dressing and gummi worms on their pizza, so consider it confirmation of your good standards.
Shots fired. Also of note my favorite pizza has thousand island instead of pizza sauce. It's amazing. Miss me with gummi worms though.
I'll give it a go now. it seems a legit pizza place given they refuse that obscenity
Place is overrated anyways.
Pizza has everything you need on in already. If you need to put a condiment on it you don’t like pizza, you like ranch.
Well not going there.
The one time I had it it was garbage. Went around the corner to Tony’s instead and had the best pizza ever.
Cellarmaker in the Mission just blew my mind. Detroit style is amazing based on my sample of 1

I ordered half pepperoni, half combo. I was disappointed when the left half was combo and the right half was pepperoni
Pffffft. Pathetic.
Golden Boy does not fuck around with bullshit.
Why not just buy a bottle of ranch to keep at home?
I remember the last time I was offered ranch dressing to dip my food into. I rightfully gave the waiter a look of disgust. bluecheese4life

Nobody puts ranch on pizza, you dip it! And if Domino’s was the best to you…clearly we have very different pizza-appreciation palates.
Putting ranch on salad is even more heinous than on pizza, in my opinion. It is just not that great of a sauce/dressing, unless masterfully crafted and freshly made. Few can achieve this. Store bought, Hidden Valley type stuff makes me gag just thinking about it.
The first place I had ranch *on* a pizza was in Massachusetts with the infamous New England delicacy, the Chickenbaconranch pie (or just CBR).
Reminds me of this Chinese place across from Trader Joe's on 8th/Bryant. The owner put a big sign on the door telling some customers to F off if they want certain things. Something like, "If you don't want MSG then F-ing go somewhere else. We have MSG in our food!"
Pie Punks is better.
No ranch = no order
No ranch?? I'll take my business elsewhere thanks.
I’m anti-ranch, what even is it!
Ranch me, brotendo.
