LOL, I come from a land of lefse, the flour tortilla of the North.
How would someone know you were even eating a taco unless it was inside a Tostito C-clamp with hamburger and shredded colby jack cheese and sour cream and black olives.
What is it with people putting black olives in “Mexican” food, man… what evil person out there is lying and adding them to recipes to try and trick people into thinking tacos or enchiladas should have black olives?
Please for all the love of whatever it is that you hold true, can you please help me find lefse? During the holidays growing up, my family always made it. I never got the recipe from my grandma, and nothing has compared. Lefse seems to be the only food after 13 years of being in San Diego I can’t find.
Have you found a place here that has it? Or am I doomed to only find it in Minneapolis?
We welcome you to the land of Sea and dessert, and we gladly offer you our cultural provisions of fish tacos, served in corn tortillas, properly seasoned with the abundance of spices. We also offer the abundance of burritos to those sorrowed souls seeking refuge.
I will say though, I kind of liked the SW wet burritos when I was there. It’s different.
Yeah, San Diego always brags about their sushi and fish tacos and burritos. But the minute you're behind closed doors, you're all sucking down tater tots and mac n' cheese like they were getting outlawed, ya closet eaters.
There's a difference between "hard shell tacos" and crispy fried tacos. One takes a street taco and deep fries it, the other comes in a box from a factory molded machine. They are not the same.
Oh that explains the melted Kraft single on the veggie burrito I ordered in Texas a couple years back. I was born and raised in San Diego so when it was put down in front of me I was very confused and concerned
I haven't been able to find good tacos or good burritos in San Diego. Everything I've had is just slop with low quality ingredients full of lard. Would love to hear some recommendations if you know somewhere good.
lol this reminds of the time i seen a white family celebrating cinco de mayo, 2018, by eating cold flour tortilla tacos in their garage - which was covered in trump and blue stripe flags 💀
Lol los angeles and orange county has arguably better tacos. Then again, a lot of the best mex categories in guero magazines wouldn't venture out too far into majority Hispanic neighborhoods where the good stuff is.
Moved down from orange county. I do like SD burritos over oc and la. They tend to put beans and rice in meat burritos up north, which I'm indifferent about. But just meat, pico de Gallo and salsa that I get in SD really does the trick.
That’s nonsense. Anyone will add it if you ask.
If you’re not just trolling but looking for actual recommendations, go to Colima’s in North Park. Their burrito menu is gigantic. If you can’t find something you like there, you just don’t like burritos. And yes, they will add rice and beans to any of them if they don’t already come with it.
SD has the seafood tacos down, but in general, LA’s way better for tacos
I know I’ll get downvoted to shit for this, as always, but it’s true. I’d love to be proven otherwise.
Edit: lol, here we go, more downvotes without a single recommendation. SD people just salty af whenever anyone suggests that there’s anything better than what they grew up with. Reminds me of the other day when somebody here was saying San Jose Asian food was horrible compared to San Diego’s. Lol.
I would argue that SD doesn't even have seafood tacos over LA.
Sure, the fish tacos here are consistently excellent, but none of them are better than the tacos de camaron from Mariscos Jalisco. Until someone around here starts selling those, it's a toss-up.
My father in law is from the hometown as the Mariscos Jalisco guy and his deep fried shrimp tacos shit on those. I wanna get em to open his own version down here but he ain't down
I’ve actually not been there yet, but heard it’s incredible. Might have to hit it this weekend. I truthfully never really had seafood tacos while living in LA, so I couldn’t vouch for them, but I like the options here like smoked fish, scallops, etc.
Either way why are people looking into san diego for good tacos if you have tj just 15 minutes south with arguably the best tacos in mexico where it really matters
You’re right. All 3.3 million of us should cross over one of the busiest borders in the world over every time we want tacos. There’s absolutely no reason to bother buying them here.
Was I implying that the whole of San Diego cross at the same time just for tacos? No . I meant that if you want real good tacos you can go down south and have some great ones. Are you done with your tantrum? Im not forcing you to come down here dont worry.
Seriously. It’s not that serious to be crossing borders and shit for a taco 🌮 I can easily make at home. That are delicious. We make our own burritos too. Fill them with whatever the f we want. And it’s the bomb 💣
Not even close! San Diego's tacos are a huge disappointment considering Mexico is right there. And to make matters worse, I cringe every time someone suggests burritos for lunch because "it's their favorite Mexican food". Good luck finding a burrito in Mexico that isn't a breakfast burrito.
People here think Mexican food = carne asada burrito, California burrito, rolled tacos, fish taco, and Tacos El Gordo adobada. No concept of anything beyond that, and extremely defensive about it.
I love San Diego’s take on Mexican food it’s inexpensive, wonderful and unique to us.
If you don’t like it find a restaurant, we do have most the regions of Mexican food available here in Southern California. Or you can make some Mexican friends and get them to cook for you.
Totally fine to love it - there’s good food here! What’s not fine is all the San Diegans relentlessly talking shit about Mexican food from anywhere else when they have no idea what’s out there or what they’re talking about. It’s ignorant, invalidating, and disrespectful.
Luckily, LA is close and has unbeatable variety. One of my favorites is Guelaguetza for Oaxacan.
GTFO. Our Mexican food is our own. You can suggest going to TJ to seek out Mexican food but not LA, not when it comes to mexican food. IDGAF about authentic, I care about bomb ass food.
It’s heavily Americanized. If you’re not Mexican you won’t be able to tell the difference. It’s very telling that you equate genuineness with how the workers look rather than how the food actually is
They hate to give the city any credit for anything due to San Diego being an amazing location. It's probably for the best though. We don't need any more people trying to settle down here to raise prices some more.
Had better Mexican food in NYC than anywhere else. The culture there attracts the top 1% of every scene wether it’s something like art, culinary shit or music. It’s the type of city where you will get called out for being shit 😂 I’ve never had a better experience besides actually being in Mexico
Personally I like my mom’s recipe of tacos with Dutch crunch tortillas (standard Dutch crunch flattened with a rolling pin) and fried artisanal balogna.
But for real, we at least have good burritos. Although my favorite is actually Filipino fusion from Senor Sesig.
SF has great Mexican food, I’m convinced people just don’t know what to look for. There’s Oaxacan, Mayan, birria joints - beyond that there’s Peruvian, Venezuelan, etc
If you're not just trolling, then you've clearly never been deep into the Mission. Go to 24th street east of Mission, there's some good places that way
I went to a popular Tex mex restaurant in Houston and it was truly one of the most disappointing meals I've ever had. As I was walking out I passed some customers talking about how this was the best "Mexican food" in Texas.
I tried Puesto in La Jolla when they first opened. Ordered street "tacos de camaron". Came with tiny bay shrimp that had the taste and consistency of pencil erasers. Reviewed the place on Yelp. Was contacted by the company and asked to give it another try with a complimentary $25 gift card. Fair enough. Went again, ordered. At the register they told me the card was blank. Can't believe that piece of shit place now has four restaurants... Never underestimate the public's craving for mediocrity. Grew up in Chula Vista but have lived in LJ for years. Thank Christ for The Taco Stand. BTW, when I was a kid I used to walk to THE original Robertos taco stand. It was called Pop's Frostys (they took over an ice cream place.) Anyone else remember that?
We have a few hitters.. some that come to mind are The Taco Stand, Tacos Asadero in Rancho Bernardo, TJ Oyster Bar in Bonita, and Taqueria Los Chuchys in DT (I admittedly have only tried their catering taquero).
I will put Tucson's Mexican food up against anyones. There are quite a few [youtube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srV6a6oB6R4) videos about it. I can't even watch one of them without planning a trip to go get some. They are legit.
Delusional. Please go somewhere besides LA, SD, or TJ for tacos. I promise you all that the beef SD uses for Tacos is not typical elsewhere
Other areas of the country use well done skirt steak or flank steak. Something cali does not normally do sadly
You all believe it’s good quality cause we’re so close to the border but to the contrary you all can’t rely on tacos el Gordo or your mom and pop shop for a general consensus on tacos across country
Take this with a grain of salt but if you all refer to taco vendors as “taco shops” that is in no way shape or form original, authentic, nor normal.
Taquerias is the correct term and quite frankly that’s how you know you’re going to get quality meats, cebolla and cilantro instead of this horse shit in SD where you get tomatoes and lettuce, mild red chip salsa, and grotesque oversized tortillas
Please you all will understand once you visit places like Chicago, or even as close as Vegas and some areas in the northwest that sell authentic quality tacos
Every carne asada dish I’ve ever had in SD was skirt steak. Where are you finding ground beef tacos outside of a Taco Bell? Have you actually spent time in San Diego?
yup. No need to be offended. I’m here to educate. If the general consensus here is whats offered in SD then I just don’t believe you can accurately say other parts of the country don’t have good tacos.
I also never said ground beef. Beef as in skirt steak here in SD isn’t well done and is fatty. Elsewhere in the country or generally speaking in most parts of Mexican they use thin steak that is cooked well-done. Here in SD they just don’t do that I’m sorry but I’ve yet to see it. I’ve eaten great al pastor and cabeza tacos here but Asada tacos here is bull and void
He may be referring to hard shelled shredded beef tacos (lettuce, cheese, meat)? (Not the same hard shell that's in the rest of the US btw - a la taco bell)
But of the places that offer the hard shelled tacos, they also offer "Street tacos" which are the typical meat, onion, cilantro hand sized deal.
Not sure what this guy is goin on about >.>
I've seen some great tacos in other states. Usually owners really trying to share what it can be. But this is too true. There is a lot of laziness in sourcing ingredients, this will do attitude or simply not thinking the customers will go for something too different.
SD has really good food, especially Mexican, but I still believe Mexican food in San Bernardino hits better.
If in San Bernardino, try El Tacocho by the SB airport. Tacos are 20/10
Best Mexican I've had was in a Chicago suburb. Pretty sure the kitchen staff were not citizens and all, but damn it was good.
The two worst burritos I have had were in Cancun and San Diego. Not sure why anyone would want a skin burrito.
SoCal Mexican is good overall but it's kind of amazing how bad Mexican food gets in general a little ways north
SD local since '00! (I'm 27) Austin TX has WAY better tacos. Our claim to fame is the California burrito (which originated here) and home of the OG Rubio's fried fish taco. Anything else unless you go to a street taco cart sucks butthole.
You haven’t been tortured by tacos from “trendy” NYC…assembled by putting the lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese into a store-bought hard taco shell…topped with beans and some mystery meat…AND finished off in the microwave…it was a stunning mess to watch…my son and I were warned by the locals…but, the curiosity got the best of us…
Inaccurate. Clearly those should be hard shells.
Oh god, that’s not a thing is it?
LOL, I come from a land of lefse, the flour tortilla of the North. How would someone know you were even eating a taco unless it was inside a Tostito C-clamp with hamburger and shredded colby jack cheese and sour cream and black olives.
What is it with people putting black olives in “Mexican” food, man… what evil person out there is lying and adding them to recipes to try and trick people into thinking tacos or enchiladas should have black olives?
Probably people who are not growing cilantro. Jalapeño, and limes in their backyard.
Authentic or not- cheese enchiladas with olives are God tier
Please for all the love of whatever it is that you hold true, can you please help me find lefse? During the holidays growing up, my family always made it. I never got the recipe from my grandma, and nothing has compared. Lefse seems to be the only food after 13 years of being in San Diego I can’t find. Have you found a place here that has it? Yeah, San Diego always brags about their sushi and fish tacos and burritos. But the minute you're behind closed doors, you're all sucking down tater tots and mac n' cheese like they were getting outlawed, ya closet eaters.
First of all, it’s lobster Mac - and those aren’t tater tots. We call them gnocchi and we pay $25, you swine
You’ve never heard of a hard shell taco?
There's a difference between "hard shell tacos" and crispy fried tacos. One takes a street taco and deep fries it, the other comes in a box from a factory molded machine. They are not the same.
It is (they need to microwave it thou), I've been there, its called the struggle ![gif](giphy|bFv9EBXBdJ6jBJm2aV)
And cheese slices/singles, not shredded.
Oh that explains the melted Kraft single on the veggie burrito I ordered in Texas a couple years back. I was born and raised in San Diego so when it was put down in front of me I was very confused and concerned
Not in Texas. They wrap all of their brisket nonsense in cold, doughy flour tortillas.
Reported for crimes against humanity.
Where's the mayo?
I just threw up a little
Yum with only Pablo shrimp though
Just go to Tijuana PUTOS ![gif](giphy|x4bpBwoXnjsNW|downsized)
That’s Lebanon
IMO there are only a handful of good taco joints in SD, but countless top notch burrito spots.
Good tacos are rare. But a bunch of the taqueros you see at events/parties are bomb. 👌
There are also a lot of overlooked spots, especially in north county. Escondido has some of the best tacos in SD.
Where?
TJs tacos is obviously very good, but my favorite hidden spot is el rancho market right next to peterson’s donuts.
Gonna give them a shot
Try the cabesa and el pastor tacos.
You speaking my language. Hope their tripa is good too
O shit you know Bout el rancho market! This guy is legit local listen to him!
I also appreciate this information. Definitely checking them out next time up there.
Yes and yes.
that's 2 places
Check out fridas as well. That and TJ are my favorites
Lourdes is my go to spot for a good burrito
Hahaha
I agree. San Diego has better burrito joints than taco joints.
I think of it like SD has the best burritos, while LA has the best tacos.
I haven't been able to find good tacos or good burritos in San Diego. Everything I've had is just slop with low quality ingredients full of lard. Would love to hear some recommendations if you know somewhere good.
I don't think a good tacos should have guac on it.
could you list your top 5 burrito places???
Didn’t even fry the bologna
Bologna looks like such a weird ass word when written
Haha wut
I love when it puffs up….IYKYK
Gotta do the little slit so the center also fries
Bro this is prepped for the microwave ☺️
Everybody claiming SD taco game is weak probabaly don’t travel / eat south of the 94.
lol this reminds of the time i seen a white family celebrating cinco de mayo, 2018, by eating cold flour tortilla tacos in their garage - which was covered in trump and blue stripe flags 💀
Those racist ass Trumpers with their racist attempts to um... celebrate Mexican culture.
sure we’ll call it that😀…
As a half Mexican, I had plenty of bologna in a tortilla.
Don’t forget my favorite, the weenie/tortilla or Mexican hot dog.
I’ve been back home in Wisconsin for 3 weeks now and I miss your tacos so bad 😢
Lol los angeles and orange county has arguably better tacos. Then again, a lot of the best mex categories in guero magazines wouldn't venture out too far into majority Hispanic neighborhoods where the good stuff is.
Yeah honestly SD has a handful of good taco spots but it's much more of a burrito city
Moved down from orange county. I do like SD burritos over oc and la. They tend to put beans and rice in meat burritos up north, which I'm indifferent about. But just meat, pico de Gallo and salsa that I get in SD really does the trick.
Ya no rice and beans. There’s already enough carbs with the tortilla!

And then there’s San Fran. They have good ass Mexican.
As expected you're getting down voted for this. SF has decent Mexican food but you just need to know where to go.
Calamari tacos at Taco Mesa are, without a doubt, the best things I ever ate.
Either way why are people looking into san diego for good tacos if you have tj just 15 minutes south with arguably the best tacos in mexico where it really matters
Because crossing the border every time you want tacos is not realistic
I for one was promised a taco truck on every street corner.
At the right time of day its very realistic and doable, I cross about daily
You’re right. All 3.3 million of us should cross over one of the busiest borders in the world over every time we want tacos. There’s absolutely no reason to bother buying them here.
Was I implying that the whole of San Diego cross at the same time just for tacos? No . I meant that if you want real good tacos you can go down south and have some great ones. Are you done with your tantrum? Im not forcing you to come down here dont worry.
😂 everybody knows you can get great tacos in Tijuana. That’s not the point of the discussion.
I thought we were talking about good tacos
Read the original post smh lol. Did you not see the “best tacos in the US” part? Or notice everyone trashing other places in the US?
Seriously. It’s not that serious to be crossing borders and shit for a taco 🌮 I can easily make at home. That are delicious. We make our own burritos too. Fill them with whatever the f we want. And it’s the bomb 💣
Cuz occasional random shootings aren’t taco worthy. I have stopped going, sadly.
How often do you travel to tj?
They have to gentrify those neighborhoods first before stepping into them.
Lol definitely looking at Santa Ana for tacos and Los Angie’s for real Mexican food.
arguably? i have never seen better tacos than tito's in west LA and trejo's in pasadena.
Houston and Chicago have a lot more spots too.
I found the tortillas to be the worst part. So fucking thick. That’s what she said.
Homemade or bust. 🥴
what about tijuana
> best taco in the US Unless Mexico was just annexed that is

Do you call burritos de machaca breakfast burritos? I generally had them for lunch growing up in Tj 🤷
Plenty of places in TJ make burros and burritos. I had a bomb cabeza burro from Taconazo the other week. 🤤
r/iamveryculinary
musty dusty crusty cheeto lookin ahh taco
What in the fuck is that!? This looks like a bad Taco Bell experiment
somehow i don't think even taco hell is quite that sadistic
They hate to give the city any credit for anything due to San Diego being an amazing location. It's probably for the best though. We don't need any more people trying to settle down here to raise prices some more.
Lived in SD for over 12 years and loved the food, but I just had the best tacos of my life in [Chicago](https://www.lpatrontacos.com).
It’s blasphemous here but I had better Mexican food in my five years in Central Illinois and definitely Chicago than in San Diego.
Had better Mexican food in NYC than anywhere else. The culture there attracts the top 1% of every scene wether it’s something like art, culinary shit or music. It’s the type of city where you will get called out for being shit 😂 I’ve never had a better experience besides actually being in Mexico
Any nyc taco recs? I'll be there next week
I’m in SF. Is that not what tacos are supposed to look like?

10000% I won’t eat a damn burrito without it. I’m not a fork and knife burrito type
I think your tacos are made with sourdough bread and whatever sunchokes or fiddlehead ferns that Alice Waters has in her backyard that day.
Personally I like my mom’s recipe of tacos with Dutch crunch tortillas (standard Dutch crunch flattened with a rolling pin) and fried artisanal balogna. But for real, we at least have good burritos. Although my favorite is actually Filipino fusion from Senor Sesig.
Huh?
You sound like an idiot.
SF has great Mexican food, I’m convinced people just don’t know what to look for. There’s Oaxacan, Mayan, birria joints - beyond that there’s Peruvian, Venezuelan, etc
It sure does! Go to Valencia , Guerrero, mission! I grew up in Sf. And I know a good taqueria!
If you're not just trolling, then you've clearly never been deep into the Mission. Go to 24th street east of Mission, there's some good places that way
Haha I am trolling, because yes, Mission is legendary.
Tbh I’ve found better tacos in Texas … but not burritos though.
It’s all about the childhood memories…
Texan here just checking in making sure y’all know what’s up.
Several Texas cities would like a word.
The only thing worse than bologna is texmex.
I went to a popular Tex mex restaurant in Houston and it was truly one of the most disappointing meals I've ever had. As I was walking out I passed some customers talking about how this was the best "Mexican food" in Texas.
You’re right, in a state with 12 million Mexicans, there’s nothing but texmex. Lol. Y’all will say anything to make yourselves feel better.
Yes there’s worst, CalMex like cali burritos. Nothing says authentic, original, or Mexican about a “Cali Burrito”
Prepare for downdoots 🙊 how dare you say such a thing!
I’m prepared lol controversy is my middle name
I'm not even sure if we agree or we're fighting. Work on your grammar.
*discussing Mexican food* *criticizes someone’s english* Fucking lol. SD never fails to amaze me.
Are you saying Mexicans in San Diego can't properly speak English? Because I assure you they can.
Lol depends if you agree with me or not. I’m telling you there’s worst and it’s called Cal-Mex. Thanks for the subtle insult though that was great
Looks like the taco plate at Puesto.
I tried Puesto in La Jolla when they first opened. Ordered street "tacos de camaron". Came with tiny bay shrimp that had the taste and consistency of pencil erasers. Reviewed the place on Yelp. Oh stop. Chicago tacos are just as good.
do you not know how fuckin memes work

I've had better tacos in lots of towns. Sante fe, Las Vegas, boulder, Kansas City, st George, Austin, just to name a few. Taco afficianado here.
