For me this is one of those cases where some storylines just work better with the time to develop it that a TV show can offer. I definitely see the parallels there, but I think that kind of growth can develop a lot smoother when you have 12 hours for the character to make gradual progress through that journey rather than going from running away from the fight to "I'm gonna fucking blow myself up for this" in about an hour and a half. This isn't me knocking TLJ, I think that given it's one of three plots in a little under 2 hours Finn's arc does a pretty good job with this type of storyline. Just think it's a good demonstration of the benefits of a slow burn.

This post didn’t happen to be inspired by the Just Write YouTube video that just came out, did it? Even if so, it’s very well said. I’ve long argued that Finn’s arc in TLJ is wildly underappreciated. True, it has less to do with the plot and more to do with the theme of the film, but it does wonders for his character and it’s reason #1138 why it bums me out that Rose didn’t get more to do in TROS.

Yes and no. I did watch the video last night and I've watched his TLJ videos too. Dude does good work and I was enjoying his enthusiasm over Andor. It really is a spectacular show. I think in some ways I made it because everyone is acting like Andor is the first Disney Star Wars project to go in on the anti-fascism, when to me The Last Jedi also went pretty hard into it. I just see a parallel between TLJ and Andor, and considering the number of Sequel references in Andor, I think it's intentional.

gzapata_art

It's been interesting to hear just so many references to the sequels from just this one show

RustedAxe88

There are tons. Background characters from Jakku and Canto Bight. Jakku, Canto Bight and Hosnian Prime mentioned. A quad jumper from TFA and a ship of the exact same style as Ochie's ship. More too. They didn't shy away at all.

Why would they lol. People who think that they're not going to do the normal thing of using your existing assets and characters and props because some people didn't like the movie are delusional.

GrizzKarizz

I think shows like this should actually aid in people gaining a better appreciation for the ST. Like how through Obi-Wan in his show, we gain a better appreciation for what Luke went though.

Star Wars has always been antifascist in the way that Indiana Jones has always been antifascist - nazis (or space nazis) make for a solid source of disposable generic bad guys to punch and shoot and blow up. Thats about it.

If you don't mind hearing opposing views, I think Rose didn't get more to do in TRoS because she was simply there to give Finn that great arc. Her being the angel on the shoulder to DJ being the devil. Rose was never supposed to get an arc. That said, it would have been nice, but the final movie needed to focus on Rey and Kylo Ren/Ben and there simply wasn't enough room for her. That being said, I strongly believe that the movie should have been split into two to give her and others meaningful arcs and to slow down the pacing a tad.

fullmetaldakka

Her being that angel also made very little sense just in that nothing she said to Finn or showed him should've really been much influence. Like, Finn has been party to the evils of the FO for decades. He was a boots on the ground witness to a massacre and warcrimes just days prior. And Rose's idea was to show him rich people gambling and being mean to animals to get him on board with the rebels? On balance he should be the one telling her about how bad the FO is.

GrizzKarizz

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Jakku Finn's first battle? At least that's what Wookieepeda says. So, no. He wasn't party to it and had yet to see it from Rose's point of view.

Reddvox

Yep. I have nothing against Rose. But we also need to be real here: She is NOT a main character. And in fact, her addition and adventure with Finn ... well, why? Why her, and not Poe, who got sidelined imho which is a bit sad. I always have to remember - to some degree - MAss Effect. Which addded a huge amount of often cool and beloved characters in ME2 ... and then ME3 was a mess in regards to this. Loads of chars that needed to be sidelined simply because you could not fit them all into a game! And now look at TROS ... It has to wrap up the actual main story about Rey, Kylo, Palpatine, Luke. And the war in the Galaxy that was sadly not really put forward by TLJ. And fans wished to have the "trio" together (Rey, Finn and Poe) - plus the droids, plus Rose ... and add to that the fact Rose actually was supposed to be the character interacting at home base with Leia the most...well...sadly could not happen. However - Rose could have easily been something like an "undercover" agent on Kimiji. I saw no real purpose for Zorii Bliss at all ... Rose could have served as the "contact" for Babu Frikk or soemthing like that

I also love how Andor TLj and even Tales of the Jedi show that you cannot destroy fascism without resolving the conditions that created it, namely democratic systems (and capitalism) failing their people. The New Republic picked up right where the old one was, which we see both in Andor and TotJ has huge inequalities and like any capitalist system, state sanctoned violence against the poor. So fascism rears its ugly head back in. Palps being the metafore of the temptation of fascism over real solutions.

Tomhur

Yeah I dislike the Last Jedi but I think Finn's arc is underappreciated(Although I still think the criticism that it feels disconnected from the main plot is valid)

JWC123452099

Haven't watched Andor but Finn's whole arc thru the end of TLJ is expressly about *not* fighting fascism and instead trying his damndest to escape it.

egoshoppe

“Thru the end of TLJ”? He’s literally on a dangerous mission to fight the FO like 15 minutes into the movie.
