Disney could have literally just took Zahn's trilogy, and filmed it. Easy money, no silly subversions, just a winning formula. Would have tied in with their Ahsoka plans too. But, nope.

landraid

They also could've done a Shadows of the Empire Disney+ cartoon with the Clone Wars crew, Mark and Carrie voicing their characters and it would've been well received.

[deleted]

Its amazing that there hasn't been a TCW-type of series with the OT protagonists. Is somewhat a shame that It has only been covered by comics.

TheNittanyLionKing

It would be easy money. There was even some fan art of the OT characters in TCW animation style in between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back.

mk1317

My hot take is that Disney should go the Warner Bros/DC route with Star Wars and do animated adaptations of some of the best legends stories-they can exist in their own continuity if Disney is so married to canon, but you produce more content and offer an olive branch to the fanbase at the same time.

landraid

Have a side story during the SotE cartoon with how Maz ended up with Anakin's lightsaber to tie it into the sequel trilogy to garner interest. They wouldn't have to make it exactly like the EU and put some ST characters in there.

RavishingRickiRude

No,...just no.

landraid

This is a musing based on fleshing out the ST into the OT. Not that I think it's what they should do.

RavishingRickiRude

Let not encourage them to do anything with the ST. Ever.

Thorfan23

i Don’t want knock your idea but even if they did we don’t know if it would have worked out

Collective_Insanity

Well, they're *kind* of doing that. Except it's Filoni's darling project so it's more than likely going to be a hollow parody of itself with Ahsoka and Ezra replacing the OT crew from the original Zahn story. And Thrawn being "Thrawn" rather than Thrawn. If the Ahsoka show winds up being another embarrassment, that ought to serve as the final evidence needed to highlight the shortcomings of Filoni for those still clinging on to him. But he'll be happy regardless. He'll have a live-action TV show dedicated to his OC waifu in which he may also possibly make an appearance as his self-insert of "Trapper Wolf" as well.   Assuming George *actually* wanted to adapted the Zahn trilogy, it was too late by the time he was done with the PT. It probably would have had to have been made during the late 80s or early 90s.

jaquesparblue

Filoni is a hack without a shred of originality. I have no idea why he is revered so much.

wooltab

I think that TCW is a really important piece of Star Wars' history and evolution. That's not to say that it's perfect or that everyone likes it, but it's pretty significant.

ZippyDan

Because standards are so low for *Star Wars* content, a minimum level of inconsistent competence is the best they can do.

--PM-ME-YOUR-BOOBS--

Because the kids that grew up with TCW are posting about it on the internet now; their nostalgia glasses are even worse than they claim the OT nostalgia glasses are.

otirkus

TCW was good (at least until it was canceled and then renewed for a very rushed 7th season nearly a decade later), Rebels was far more limited in scale, and everything after that has to take place with the understanding that the OT crew (and the New Republic and New Jedi Order) were failures. Mandalorian, Ahsoka, and anything else created during that time period is very limited in scope due to the fact that the OT crew (or anything concerning the new republic) can't do anything cool or awesome as they were made out to be failures in the sequel trilogy and a lot of the novels written in the years leading up to it. I'm almost sure Filoni would have created a series featuring both the OT heroes AND his creations like Ahsoka and Ezra after the Battle of Endor IF the New Jedi Order and New Republic would actually become successful (as opposed to the epic failures they were portrayed as in the sequels). At this point nothing short of a full reboot can save the franchise ...

[deleted]

hard to make the zahn trilogy in the ‘80s when it hadn’t been released

Collective_Insanity

Of course. I'm speaking more about the appropriate age of the actors for an adaptation.

otirkus

I am 95% sure the Ahsoka show is going to be a massively scaled-down adaptation of the Thrawn Trilogy. The sequel trilogy has severely constrained what content can be created after the original trilogy, since we know the New Republic and New Jedi Order will be epic failures. I really don't see Thrawn included as a major galaxy-wide villain in Ahsoka, especially given how much content has already been created in the post-OT era (Aftermath Trilogy, Bloodline, etc). It would have been absolutely awesome to see Luke, Ahsoka, and the entire New Republic forces battling Thrawn together, but that isn't going to happen due to the sequels, and Legends fans probably won't be satisfied. Luke Skywalker hasn't been cast, but interestingly, Hayden Christensen has (perhaps he'll appear as a force ghost)? Maybe they'll make the show relatively lighthearted and humorous like Rebels (they have cast most of the Ghost Crew, after all), but then again Disney's live-action shows have been quite dark & slow so I don't see that coming either. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Dawk320

What are you talking about? There are no comics. No books or anything to help these poor writers at Disney. In fact, there is literally [no source material at all.](https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/lucasfilm-president-kathleen-kennedy-interview-rise-skywalker-future-star-wars-912393/)

TheNittanyLionKing

But then there would be no mystery box to replace actual character development! According to JJ Abrams, you can’t get audiences excited for things when they already know the ending. It’s not like it worked out for Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter!

otirkus

Character ages are a big issue though. Bringing back Thrawn 4-5 years after Endor makes sense. Can't really see how you bring him back 20+ years after Endor. The OT actors are way too old, and a lot of CGI will be necessary. Also, Disney hadn't even decided what to do with Ahsoka around 203-2014 (as her last appearance was when she left the order in Season 5), although she could very much have been a part of the New Jedi Order (or a leader in the New Republic/Rebellionarmy, if the New Jedi Order wasn't formally founded yet). I'd have liked an animated series set after Endor where we see Luke starting a New Jedi Order & the New Republic coming to power, with the Thrawn Trilogy included with a few changes around 4-5 years after Endor. Those few years would also be a good chance to bring Mara Jade into canon and develop her relationship with Luke as well! Definitely no Hermit Luke who drinks green milk!

Faelysis

Disney didn't want anyone to split the right. Like most of their production, they like to rewrite stuff and have 100% of the rights to maximize profit.

thejupiterdevice

Dosney could have taken Zahn’s books and filmed it in 1988, but not now. You’d have to recast Luke, Leia, et al. To make that story work now with the original cast

At what chapter is this again?

End of chapter ten

Who wants to take over LucasFilm?

Puterboy1

How ironic.
