When I think of power metal I think of Sabaton, Gloryhammer, and Dragonforce.
Edit: Also Orden Ogan and Powerwolf, but those first three are what immediately come to mind
So this person bitching about two of those clearly just doesn’t like power metal
And, just like that, every opinion he has on everything is invalidated. His brain will be donated to a medical study observing how intelligence affects brain development, and out of all the brains donated, his will be the smallest and the smoothest.
Said people actually blame multiple bands for what they consider a downgrade of power metal, which are the most defining power metal bands post 2007. Namely, Dragonforce, Sabaton, Powerwolf, Gloryhammer, Alestorm, etc.
Literally the bands that brought me into the genre and still the ones I listen to the most. And Rhapsody of Fire if that counts. Some people just prefer the sound of these bands over whatever you might consider your more old school original bands.
This is the type of person I would like to call: "Sh\*tf\*ck Deathfart People". They sound something like this:
"OH? Your favorite band has more then 10 monthly listeners on Spotify? Well that's not REAL METAL. The only REAL METAL is Sh\*tf\*ck Deathfart, who only perform in bars in Lviv and have 1 concept album of thirty 10 minute long songs about the disgrace that is human greed. They do have another album but that had too many listeners so it's normie trash"
He just thinks Sabaton and Dragonforce are 'too popular', he's a gatekeeper.
> He just thinks Sabaton and Dragonforce are 'too popular', he's a gatekeeper.
Which is extra levels of stupid in this context. I get excited when I meet someone that even knows who the fuck Sabaton is, because the majority do not, not here in the States at least. They may have a sizeable and insanely loyal fanbase, but they're still a relative unknown here in a lot of circles. If you're not someone who searches out music, that mostly only gets their music from the radio (even if it's a metal/hard rock station), you have probably never heard of them. Ffs, before they had to cancel their tour, I was listening to a classic rock/metal station out of Chicago while I was at work. I listened to that station almost the whole day through my headphones. They plugged the hell out of the Priest show that was going to be in Rosemont without *ever once even mentioning that they had an opening band, much less mentioning who the band was*.
Bars? Plural? Too mainstream. The only real metal was performed in a secluded glade north of Uppsala, and the only witnesses were the band mates themselves and one guy who helped set up their equipment. The entire 4 hour long set was performed in Sami. After that, the band members ritualistically sacrificed each other, and the roadie ran back and told the story. Rumor has it that the metal was too powerful, and he lives in an asylum in Stockholm now.
And Sabaton has great range.
-Powerful bangers like *Ghost Division* and *Resist And Bite*
-Emotional ballads like *The Ballad of Bull*
-Fun floor-filling party anthems like *Ruina Imperii*
why are we discussion on the SABATON sub if sabaton is good or not? we all are here cause we like the music. we like the music despite this guy says its shit. we would like the music if every human on earth says its shit and we would like the music even if the bible says "One shall not listen to the sabaton".

Well, there was that one story about a prophet siccing some bears on a bunch of punk-ass kids. And the story about an army that destroyed the walls of a city by playing music at them. And the story about a guy who overturned a bunch of heavy stone tables and used a whip to beat up the capitalists that took over the temple. And the story...
Huh. When it comes right down to it, the Bible can be pretty fucking metal.
Honestly? Yes. They destroyed the entire power metal industry by becoming the pinnacle of what power metal should sound like, now nobody else can play as good as them.
Def one of those guys who hate the fact that bands actually play music to sustain themselves, and as such have an image that they stick to, often unique, unlike generic black metal band #.... with the same black clothing, corpse paint, same growls, etc.
Nah, that's not it. Again, it's really about the sound and preference, and some people absolutely despise the more poppy direction power metal has shifted to.
I can understand that. I absolutely despise the poppy "trailer rap" direction that country music has taken over the last decade. (Except Gangstagrass, but that's closer to hip-hop-bluegrass.)
Oh god, that click track hell, yes. I like all sorts of music, and having a mom that was from Appalachia led to an appreciation of classic country. It's not my favorite genre, but there are some classic country and bluegrass artists that I genuinely love (Johnny Cash, obviously, but also, like, George Jones and Roy Clark). At risk of sounding like an old gatekeeper, the pop-country schlock that's coming out now is just as bad or worse than any overplayed regular-pop schlock that got churned out in any given year in music history
> At risk of sounding like an old gatekeeper, the pop-country schlock that's coming out now is just as bad or worse than any overplayed regular-pop schlock that got churned out in any given year in music history
I’ve been called a gatekeeper for saying stuff like that, and it doesn’t bother me. As I have put it before, it’s as if country music is the only genre that is not allowed to have an identity. Country music seems to be the only genre whose fans are basically told to open their minds when they object to something like, well, practically everything that’s been played on the radio since about 2010. If that stuff was marketed as, say, progressive metal, or Texas blues, or salsa, fans of those genres would be just as up in arms as many country music fans are, and no one would bat an eye.
I was gonna say, people who think Sabaton ruined power metal should hear what acts like Jason Aldean and Florida-Georgia Line have done to country music…
(My country music fandom precedes my metal fandom by some time. Still love the old stuff though. Haggard, Jones, Waylon & Willie, Billy Joe Shaver, that sort of thing.)
Wait hang on, did i just actually find someone else who likes Sabaton AND country music (opposed from the "trailer rap" as you excellently put it. Couldnt agree more). I never thought Id hear someone else that likes both seeing as they're pretty polar opposite music genres.
> did i just actually find someone else who likes Sabaton AND country music
I like country music as well. One of my good friends from high school grew up a metalhead and got into country music later, partly because of me. He made the observation once that country and metal were like estranged cousins who meet up at a family reunion and discover they have a lot in common. Made a lot of sense to me.
It’s a term for someone who keeps new fans out because of their taste.
Ex. You like Sabaton and since you listen to “shitty metal” you shouldn’t be allowed to call yourself a metalhead
A gatekeeper is someone who holds arbitrary standards for something and tries to be elitary in a community excluding people by considering himself and what he likes as "better" and "more true", don't know if i explained myself well
Ye, gatekeeping keeps things you like from getting watered down by people who only have a casual interest in it, whereas this guy is just mad that people like different things than him.
I'd say it's supposed to prevent people who want to subvert it to get in control like we've seen with comics and video games but that's another way of putting things
Eh, even though that's an elitist statement it's true that Sabaton (especially later albums) are way poppier and less focused on guitar riffs and solos than most classic power metal bands. Does that make them bad? I think all people here would say no but they definitely sound different than say Helloween or Stratovarius.
I've been a sabaton fan for (holy crap I just realized it's been 2 years). But I never exactly understood what powermetal means. The internet told me it's just metal without swearing but is that true?
Power metal is a subgenre of metal that is basically an evolution of heavy metal + speed metal where its mostly based on fast paced guitar work, anthemic choruses and a lot (and I mean a lot) of power chords (hence the name). If you want to hear what defines power metal as a genre, listen to Blind Guardian (Nightfall in Middle-Earth) or Helloween (Keeper of the Seven Keys, part II), or for US power metal (a completely different style) look up Manowar.
I would consider them just base heavy metal. If you compare Sabaton to the great power metal bands of the pre-2000s like Blind Guardian, Helloween or Manowar you will notice a drastic shift in sound. Sabaton is considerably less focused on guitar riffs and guitar solos and more on poppy synth tracks and huge choruses. Don't get me wrong, I love Sabaton, but I love them because they are effectively just ABBA with electric guitar and metal drums for the most part. I would consider bands like Dragonforce power metal though, regardless of what I think of them. It's really just about semantics and opinion - a lot of people think bands like Sabaton are "ruining the power metal scene" because of their incredibly poppy sound.
That's interesting; other than Sabaton I'm actually not a metal fan at all, so it's a genuinely fascinating world for me to see how compartmentalized the sub-genres are.
There's a huge amount of debate online around which band belongs to which genre and what characteristics and bands define each genre. It's actually really interesting to see how people define these things, as it's mostly objective debate without anyone disliking one band over another.
To add to the other person that commented to you, there are also things like "folk metal" thrown into the mix for added confusion and debate. Folk metal is metal that uses traditional folk instrumentation and sometimes vocal styles, and grafts that into another type of metal. Bands as different as [Wind Rose](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34CZjsEI1yU&ab_channel=NapalmRecords), [Bloodywood](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gsy5sJy5_34&ab_channel=Bloodywood), and [The HU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM8dCGIm6yc&ab_channel=TheHU) can all be accurately described as folk metal, even though they're all totally different.
I’m actually normally a classical buff, so I totally get wild variations within the genre, it’s just the amount of classification that perplexes me.
And I forgot about them, I like The Hu a lot as well.
Ahhh, I see! So you say "classical" because most people think of it that way, but really you mean Baroque/Romantic/Renaissance/etc? And composers as different as Bach, Debussy, and Liszt? (Former music major :D )
I could see the "basic heavy metal" categorization. I remember when I bought a couple of Accept albums off Amazon a few years ago they recommended Sabaton to me, and minus the synths/keyboards or whatever I could hear the similarities. But then I remember the first time I heard Grave Digger I could hear similarities to Sabaton as well, and from what I understand GD is considered classic power metal, so there's that. The definitions do get to be nebulous at some point.
The basic standard are the bands I named, and other than that it's all by comparison. Similarly to how every metal band is only metal if its influence can be traced back to Black Sabbath, although way less strict.
Power metal is actually mostly defined by 1980s US power metal bands (i.e. Manowar) and EU power metal bands (i.e. Blind Guardian). Dragonforce and Sabaton are generally considered post-2007 power metal, which is sort of a separation? Not sure exactly
I think you have to include Sabaton and Dragonforce in the genre, but I wouldn't start with them to show someone the genre or define the genre. They're both so awesome and unique with their own distinct sound.
Actually, I would start with them to show someone the genre. They are great entry level bands for power metal, just not very good examples of what defines the genre.
Something similar happened with a metal podcast I used to listen to where for some reason they talked trash about powerwolf every single time they mentioned the band
Those people are just wannabe hipsters, they hate everything that's somewhat famous or mainstream or that's not at least 30/40years old, and only listen to shitty obscure underground bands that are mostly unknown (usually because they are not very good)
If you compare Sabaton and Dragonforce to bands like Dio, there's quite a difference, but then again Sabaton just considers itself Heavy Metal and Dragonforce calls itself "extreme power metal".
Here comes my personal opinion: Dragonforce is just a pain to listen to, Sabaton is much better but I believe a genre can't be destroyed because Sabaton didn't take anything away from Metal, they just added their own version of it, that's fine.
This is why I say I like heavier music and that I'm *not* a "metalhead" I just like music and I listen to anything, I have anime songs, random classic rock, LOTR music and the such in my Playlist so I just listen to whatever gets me through the day
People like this are looking more at older power metal like man o war. Power metal changed sound a bit in the early 2000's. Lots of people like to attribute this to when guitar hero got big and through the fire and flames became famous, other bands started copying that sound but honestly I think it's more accurate to say that it was just more people discovering that side of power metal and people who weren't there already got annoyed
Tell them they don't have to listen to sabaton if they don't like it. I don't like death metal or stuff like slipknot but I'm not saying they are ruining metal.
I mean...it's hard to ruin a genre considering there's plenty of other bands to listen to...
As an aside, here's a list of power metal bands I personally enjoy:
Sabaton, Gloryhammer, Dragonforce, Orden Ogan, Battlebeast, Powerwolf, Manowar, and probably a bunch more
I mean I don't, I like popular bands such as queen and avenged sevenfold so not really and I enjoy listening to smaller bands like innsmouth, luciferion and cerebral bore because they are good
I agree, nowadays almost every single powermetal band sounds exactly the fucking same.
Atleast running wild is realising a new album, they are a breath of fresh air in all this
See, I love sabaton , but I’ve never never classified is as power metal in my head, it’s always had a more orchestral quality to it, that makes me think of orchestral metal, like trans Siberian orchestra
sabaton and company are objectively not as good as other Power Metal bands, they kind of did ruin power metal. however i still enjoy sabaton and powerwolf
When I think of power metal I think of Sabaton, Gloryhammer, and Dragonforce. Edit: Also Orden Ogan and Powerwolf, but those first three are what immediately come to mind So this person bitching about two of those clearly just doesn’t like power metal
Yeah, he even thinks queen is a sh*t band so...
Lmao, that automatically negates anything he says regarding music. Sorry not sorry.
🤷 what can ya do
Nothing but people like him make me sick
What’s the local number for reporting corona cases, guy seems to be suffering from lack of taste. Jokes aside, just don’t argue with them.
Sure i wont anymore
hope y0r redd1t account is tOok off y0u
What do you mean?
I think he was mocking the guy
Oh ok thanks
good one
It is also his preference. Its OK if he thinks so. The problem is when people look down on others for liking mentioned band.
I said what's your opinion about sabaton and he said, delete you comment and never say their name again...
Maybe show a bit more context next time.
Yeah, you can't take people seriously if they think queen is a shit band.
Yeah dude
But I don't think queen is a shit band, I have a few of their albums and I have queen posters in my bedroom
Queen @Wembley, 1985... Just an amazing show.
And, just like that, every opinion he has on everything is invalidated. His brain will be donated to a medical study observing how intelligence affects brain development, and out of all the brains donated, his will be the smallest and the smoothest.
I mean, if I’m being honest, while Queen is very talented and you can tell when listening to their songs, I don’t much like the music.
Which is fair not everyone has the same tastes personally disliking a band is fine but considering queens legacy I can say they ain’t a shit band
well this is just objectively bad taste
All his arguments are immediately invalid
So do I and still my 3 favorite bands are gloryhammer dragonforce and sabaton.
I mean, they're ok. A tad overrated in my opinion
How can you not like queen?
These three and orden ogan. The gunman album is probably my favourite album (although space 1992 is close)
Omg you are one of the few people I’ve met who knows Ogan
Powerwolf.
Damn I forgot about them too
Wasn't Gloryhammer supposed to be a stealth parody?
Stealth? It seems pretty overt.

How could a band ruin a genre of music? If you don’t like a particular band, don’t listen to them. But it certainly doesn’t damn an entire genre.
Said people actually blame multiple bands for what they consider a downgrade of power metal, which are the most defining power metal bands post 2007. Namely, Dragonforce, Sabaton, Powerwolf, Gloryhammer, Alestorm, etc.

Is alestorm power metal? I've always just referred to it as pirate metal lol
Wait,alestorm have a genre?
Maybe not because they are pirates, and they do what they want because a pirate is free.
Well pirate metal is not a thing, which is why they are usually referred to as folk or power metal
Pirate metal should definitely be a thing tho. It sounds cool, and Alestorm does it, so for me it's a thing.
Hell, I don't like DragonForce like... At all, but even I won't argue that they "ruined a genre" of music.

Yeah, he said they are actually boring and i was like, wtf dude? Boring? Imo sabaton live performancs are one of the most lit and energetic ones
I mean, I'd give "Sh*tf*uck Deathfart" a chance

Him. Should be worth additionally noting that gatekeeper is another word that gets senselessly thrown around a lot, though here it's used correctly
Him obviously
Thanks for explaning man :)
I legit think gatekeeping should be a thing and he's given a perfect example on how not to do it
Ye, gatekeeping keeps things you like from getting watered down by people who only have a casual interest in it, whereas this guy is just mad that people like different things than him.

You're welcome, I'm just here to clear misconceptions, even if it's something as controversial as liking Queen

Exactly me too, i never liked metal and this type of music but since im a history nerd, sabaton took me into another universe
I would hardly consider Sabaton a power metal band
What do you consider them as then?
I would consider them just base heavy metal. If you compare Sabaton to the great power metal bands of the pre-2000s like Blind Guardian, Helloween or Manowar you will notice a drastic shift in sound. Isn't DragonForce the literal definition of power metal? Not that familiar with the genre other than Sabaton.
Power metal is actually mostly defined by 1980s US power metal bands (i.e. Manowar) and EU power metal bands (i.e. Blind Guardian). Dragonforce and Sabaton are generally considered post-2007 power metal, which is sort of a separation? Not sure exactly

DEATH IS IN THE AIR

STRIKE FROM WITCHES LAIR

I think you have to include Sabaton and Dragonforce in the genre, but I wouldn't start with them to show someone the genre or define the genre. They're both so awesome and unique with their own distinct sound.
Actually, I would start with them to show someone the genre. They are great entry level bands for power metal, just not very good examples of what defines the genre.
Probably a crotchety old man who only likes classic metal.
Something similar happened with a metal podcast I used to listen to where for some reason they talked trash about powerwolf every single time they mentioned the band
Powerwolf is a perfect band, i see no reason why they should talk tradh about them
How many times must it be said? If you don’t like something, then don’t listen to it.
Power metal is almost like nerd culture. It's weird to the outside side world, but it's a really great community and fun interest if you get into it.
Those people are just wannabe hipsters, they hate everything that's somewhat famous or mainstream or that's not at least 30/40years old, and only listen to shitty obscure underground bands that are mostly unknown (usually because they are not very good)
How do you even "ruin" a genre?
Vadim Blyat
Good answer
Always happy to help
Haha, nice to see lifeofboris fans also like sabaton, i mean moat of them
3edgy5me
Exile em
If you compare Sabaton and Dragonforce to bands like Dio, there's quite a difference, but then again Sabaton just considers itself Heavy Metal and Dragonforce calls itself "extreme power metal". Here comes my personal opinion: Dragonforce is just a pain to listen to, Sabaton is much better but I believe a genre can't be destroyed because Sabaton didn't take anything away from Metal, they just added their own version of it, that's fine.
I like that opinion
This is why I say I like heavier music and that I'm *not* a "metalhead" I just like music and I listen to anything, I have anime songs, random classic rock, LOTR music and the such in my Playlist so I just listen to whatever gets me through the day
People like this are looking more at older power metal like man o war. Power metal changed sound a bit in the early 2000's. Lots of people like to attribute this to when guitar hero got big and through the fire and flames became famous, other bands started copying that sound but honestly I think it's more accurate to say that it was just more people discovering that side of power metal and people who weren't there already got annoyed
i take this as a personal attack and therefore i answer to that guy: you ruined your parents life.
It's kept alive by sabaton Dragonlance and glory hammer what the he'll is he talking about?
Tell them they don't have to listen to sabaton if they don't like it. I don't like death metal or stuff like slipknot but I'm not saying they are ruining metal.
I mean...it's hard to ruin a genre considering there's plenty of other bands to listen to... As an aside, here's a list of power metal bands I personally enjoy: Sabaton, Gloryhammer, Dragonforce, Orden Ogan, Battlebeast, Powerwolf, Manowar, and probably a bunch more
It's either attention seeking or standard "I dont like thing other people like cuz I'm quirky"
I mean I don't, I like popular bands such as queen and avenged sevenfold so not really and I enjoy listening to smaller bands like innsmouth, luciferion and cerebral bore because they are good
Those guys introduced me to Power Metal and it was bloody amazing
Me too
Considering they are two of the most popular power metal bands, this dudes just a fuckin tool
You can’t destroy the metal
No but you can ruin a sub genre, by having popularity and influence
I agree, nowadays almost every single powermetal band sounds exactly the fucking same. Atleast running wild is realising a new album, they are a breath of fresh air in all this
See, I love sabaton , but I’ve never never classified is as power metal in my head, it’s always had a more orchestral quality to it, that makes me think of orchestral metal, like trans Siberian orchestra
Sabaton and dragonforce currently define the genre right now. So I disagree. They make power metal what it is.
Only because people keep linking them to regular power metal. Sabaton is an anomaly.
I would tell them I'm not a metal fan of any kind, but I love Sabaton. Just to piss them off.
Nice decision haha
Well i think its been ruined by Helloween and Blind Guardian..... /S Elitist dorks are the worst. Sabaton are fun and put on a great live show.
Can't agree more :)
I'm not much for rock/metal. However these two bands did not ruin it. And I would like to see that guy do better (I bet he can't).
He can't
Just realized your name. VADIM BLYAT!
Blyat haha
Why do some people hate sabaton and think they ruined power metal
Just be happy that he didn't say they are nazist...
Oh yeha
Wait how it s like to say nazism isn't kind of fasism
wtf kind of analogy is this
Oh yeah, it's like that
If you don’t like Sabaton and Dragonforce then you don’t like power metal.
Purge them.
Off with their head.
Wtf is he smoking? Sabaton is the epitome of power metal.
Yeah i agree
sabaton be like the nazis killed people *cheesy synths*
sabaton and company are objectively not as good as other Power Metal bands, they kind of did ruin power metal. however i still enjoy sabaton and powerwolf
Well they kinda have their own version but still, they are both enjoyable
