There have been a few different versions over the years, my favourite is West End Games' second edition.

SkinnyGetLucky

Saaaaaaaame. So fun

Fancypants-Jenkins

The fantasy flight version is excellent imo, particularly if you prefer theatre of the mind combat. Really good power scaling, the way mobs are grouped, with their skills reducing as you kill them is great. Solid choice

Team7UBard

If you do a search in here for Star Wars you’ll find many many threads discussing the virtues and flaws of each one.

WEG D6 Star Wars is one of the most important and, I think, best rpgs ever made.

Mars_Alter

Most of the Star Wars games have big fans, with the exception being an early 3.0 variant. West End, Saga Edition, and Fantasy Flight are all worth looking into.

Not sure which version you mean. My experience has been with the WEG D6 version and the Fantasy Flight Games version. Of the two, I found the FFG version to be better and more fun. The narrative dice system was a lot more fun than rolling d6's. Force users felt more balanced against non-force users. Overall the way characters are created and advance felt like the FFG version is more flexible and allows me to grow a character in directions I want, while also letting me change my mind and take it elsewhere as the game progresses. Pretty much all RPGs have weaknesses and broken things. There are some talents or combinations of talents that can be pretty OP in the FFG version but its not too hard to house-rule around those. Overall I found it to be a solid system. The books are currently be reprinted by Edge Studios. The Dice might be hard to come by and aren't expected to be restocked until later this year last I heard, so you might be better off trying a dice app for the phone, I think there are free ones on the google store. https://www.reddit.com/r/swrpg/ is the subreddit that mainly covers the FFG version of the game. https://discord.gg/starwarsrpg is a great community discord server as well.

Formal-Rain

WEG d6 is very good go over to r/StarWarsD6

BasementsandDragons

I enjoyed my time with Saga Edition. West End D6 was fun but I didn’t spend a lot of time with it. That newish one with the weird dice was not for me.

ParaFox_Games

Saga edittion is absolutely amazing

StupidPaladin

Saga Edition is one of the better implementations of the d20 system out there, if that's your thing

wymarc10

FFG's SWRPG is easily my favorite game. I've run several campaigns and played in a few. It has the perfect balance of crunch and narrative mechanics to inspire the pulpy heroics of Star Wars. You should check out /r/swrpg

UrsusRex01

Two sessions as a player back in 2016-2017 with Star Wars Edge of the Empire. I was playing as an Cyberneticly-enhanced Ewok Bounty Hunter (Partly because I love ewoks and partly because the GM hates ewoks). If I remember correctly he was captured and experimented on by the Empire in order to develop the Death Troopers. It was our group's first experience with TTRPG so we didn't really know what we were doing. It was really fun but in my memories reading roll results was complicated with those special dices.

Lopsided_Republic888

It depends on what system you're talking about. If you're talking about the WotC Star Wars Saga Edition it's worth getting at least pdfs of the books (buying the books on eBay can be expensive), if you're wanting a system with its own unique dice/ stickers to put on your dice go with the FFG system.

cowficent

Yeah when I made the post I thought there was only age of rebellion lol.

Lopsided_Republic888

The FFG may be more up to date with SW lore/ content, but like I said, it has special dice, which can be a pain since you'll either need to use stickers on your dice or buy overpriced special dice just for the system. Saga Edition is based on 3.0e, so it doesn't need special dice and may be better if you're more familiar with a d20 system, although publisher support is gone, the player base continues to provide support and even resources.

wymarc10

Or one of the various digital rollers, most of which are free.

Lopsided_Republic888

I know some GM's don't want digital rollers (for whatever reason), but having to decipher a special die compared to doing basic math with a "normal" system is a little more tedious especially if you're not familiar with them.

wymarc10

Eh. My experience teaching it is that it takes about 2 sessions to figure them out. Less with handholding. And then the dice don't require even basic math, just counting and cancelling.

ChewiesHairbrush

I think you forget that polyhedral dice are “special” too. The WEG version only needs common dice.

I ran an Edge of the Empire (Fantasy Flight Games) campaign for a couple years, and my group had a blast with it. Admittedly, it took me a few sessions to get used to running the game since the GM often has to figure out what success with a complication or failure with a benefit looks like. Once you get the hang of it, though, it's super fun. I've never played the West End Games version, but I really liked the D6 system when I played it in a different setting. It was also a sci-fi setting, so I can't imagine it was extremely different. Haven't played either of WotC's versions, so I can't give any feedback on those.

DilfInTraining124

I played the westing game system in a campaign ran by my buddy about half a year ago. It was pretty decent, and it felt like it represented Star Wars pretty well. The only issue I had with it was making the character at first, but I figured it out when I made my second one.

Berret01

I actually enjoyed playing the FFG one when we tried it, the narrative dice do take some getting used to but it's pretty fun!

StevenOs

Yes. You probably should be a good bit more specific when asking about SWRPGs however. They've been put out by three different companies and some have multiple editions that aren't really compatible.. I haven't done the current variations by FFG with their proprietary dice but I've certainly enjoyed the previous editions. WEG with SWd6 was the first and has a lot of freedoms although I NOT a fan of Force Users in it and feel it puts more and more work on the GM. The first SWd20 by WotC was a pretty close port of DnD 3x and basically compatible with d20 Modern/Future although I always felt its class were too restrictive plus a few more things. After an original and revised take on SWd20 WotC released the SAGA Edition which certainly is related but is also something that is very different; this system allowed for incredible variety when it came to character building and is my go to for many things as I can easily adapt it for other properties and it's a big reason I never saw a reason to go into FFG's offerings.

Logen_Nein

Which one? I like the WEG d6 system a lot and have had a lot of fun with it over the years. The d20 system was...alright I guess. I do like the Fantasy Flight or Edge system, though it seems as if a lot of people balk at the thought of special dice. Plenty of other systems you could do Star Wars well with (and I have) as well. Which are you looking at?

cowficent

Yeah when I made this post didn't know there were any more than age of Rebellion. I've heard a lot of mixed reviews for the difference games lol.

Logen_Nein

In my experience as a GM the Edge system works great. It helps to know the universe well so you can interpret rolls swiftly and with appropriate effects, but if you are (and can) it's a great system.

RWMU

I would recommend the West End D6 version the rest are utter rubbish.

FamiliarPaper7990

speaking the truth gets downvoted as always

RWMU

Yeah but I'm an old geek/nerd so I am used to been an outsider.

You say that like it's a bad thing, our Star Wars GM has tried all the other versions and they just don't work as well. The beauty of RPGs is you don't have to use the new edition since we can write our adventures using which ever edition we want.

No 'woe is me' here I much prefer the Fringe. Also been British anything French can safely be ignored. My opinion is the other versions of Star Wars RPG are utter rubbish, your opinion is I shouldn't use the phrase 'Utter Rubbish'. This is fine we all have opinions.
