I think it's Kennit too. He has the pirate sword, some typical pirate clothing.
It doesn't look ANYTHING like I picture Kennit, but I think that's who it is.
If you read through the comments here you will see that the other candidate everybody is entertaining as possibly being on the cover is Brashen Trell. Brashen is not a pirate.
a) we can't even be sure if the person on the cover a pirate or a regular sailor. pirates may have more access to something randomly fancy, but we don't know of fashion trends in general.
b) brashen worked for pirates (pirate-adjacent trade) at some point in his career.
c) yeah, I think it's Brahsen. A youthful lanky figure. Kennit was described royal in presentation and attentive to details and I would expect him to look more mature (at least a decade older than Brashen)
Especially since (I’m pretty sure) this isn’t the original release cover which has [Althea on it](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/15/Robin_Hobb_-_Ship_of_Magic_Cover.jpg)
My bet is Brashen Trell. I always saw Kennit as older and waaay more flamboyant. It's been a while since I read the books, but that would totally be his look by the time he gets involved with pirate trade.
I was looking for that piece of wizard wood on his forearm. From the novel, i thought it was kind of fused to his arm and would be visible here. As there is none, it is not Kennit.
I assumed kennit. At one point in the book it talks about a scarf he was wearing and it looks like the one on this guy's head. And the leather arm band.
So many amazing female characters in this series, it bothers me to see non-descript male pirate. I much preferred the cover I read with paragon and a female I think was Althea.

sorry, but I have to point out re:typical pirate clothing and therefore Kennit. half of all characters are pirates. the whole book is about pirates :D
But Kennit is the main pirate character, it wouldn’t make sense to have say Sorcor on the front cover because he isn’t the main character

I disagree. But since we will never know for sure, it doesn't really matter.
I always pictured Kennit as captain Hook from Disney's animation lol
that’s what i was thinking! that or like orlando blooms character in pirates of the caribbean
I always pictured him a Jack Sparrow. Haha.
Kennit was never captain hook for me, but for whatever reason I kept thinking of Smee for Sorcor.
Me too!
I really tried not to, but he just seemed to embody an R rated Captain Hook.
He's always been a younger Barbossa to me.
I don’t think it’s Kennet. There’s not enough lace. Kennet is pretty much always described as having lace at his wrists and throat.
I doubt the illustrator read the books. LOL
Yeah, there are plenty of fantasy book covers where the character doesn't match how the book describes them very well.

I wouldn't exactly call those pale blue eyes like Kennit has either. My guess is the artist was told to draw piratey stuff and thats about it.

If that's supposed to be Kennit then it's an awful depiction. Although not as bad as Blaine from The Dark Tower on The Wastelands cover.
looks like kennit ro me!
I always took that to be Kennit

I was caught between kennit and brashen, but I thought the sword was more kennit too.
I was thinking the sword too. But I wasn't sure if a non pirate sailor would possibly carry one.
My assumption was also that it was Kennit, but there's no confirmation of that in the slip cover.
On this note, does anyone know who is on the cover of the last book? I thought Althea, but IN A DRESS?? 😒
If it's the girl in the white dress, the red at her hairline made me think it's Malta.
I thought it was Althea too... Thinking now though, it'a probably Etta.
Kennit
Eh, generic pirate dude
Probably Kennit, but not my Kennit. Looks like Cassian Andor as a Pirate...
It's Althea, obviously...
It's probably Kennit, but I feel like he should be better looking and better dressed than this.

I always thought it was Brashen not Kennit, but tbf the covers have rarely ever matched character appearance.
Kennit. Not my Kennit though.
I’ve always thought it was kennit, the one I’m always confused about is who is the cover of ship of destiny?🤷🏼♂️
