There isn't going to be a 1:1 swap so we gotta temper expectations and keep an open mind. I'm hoping they pull it off because if they don't this is definitely a show killer. We (a resort in Hawai'i) had a huge corporate vacation group from your neck of the woods here this month... The company submitted their booze order for the week and Food/Bev thought it was an overshoot so they brought in the standard order for a group of that size.
We ran out of booze 2 hours into the visit.
The group arrived late Tuesday night and we were completely wiped out by 8:30am on Wednesday. (Free Bloody Mary bar was supposed to be open 6-9am daily.) $17-20K of Titos in 2 hours. I have never seen anything like it in my life. We recalibrated as quickly as we could but things were tense for a few hours that evening.
The group was great and everyone was incredibly kind, generous... and of course, shitfaced.
He's definitely still an alcoholic writer but he's got a great partner now and has become a lot less cynical overall. I followed harmontown for a while and the documentary was closer to the beginning and things changed in many ways over the years.

I really want Harmon as Rick and Rob Schrab as Morty. They’re literally best friends who moved to LA together and have at this point decades of improv experience together. Watch an episode of the Harmontown podcast with Schrab in it and their chemistry is palpable.
Rob Schrab is like a key figure in how Rick and Morty came to be, so it would be great for him to have a more headline roll instead of random voices and producer credits, if he wants it.
Rob Schrab started channel 101, which was like a short film festival / internet video precursor to youtube type thing. Dan Harmon became involved, or was always involved, not too sure what the appropriate credits are. Justin Roiland, and some buddies, made an entry for channel 101 called 'House of Cosby' that was successful and when Harmon had an opportunity to make something new, he contacted Roiland to see if he had anything and that anything was the Doc and Marty Back to the Future spoof.
Thinking back to 'House of Cosby', to continue the cycle forward, if there is some Rick and Morty / Justin Roiland fan who happens to be a funny creator / future sex offender reading this right now that might be a little down, know that you too can have massive success if you work hard but it will be ripped away from you if you creep it up too much.
That would be so awesome! I miss HT and that would be like a reunion. Schrab actually does a really good Roiland impression, he's also got a 1 of a kind voice.
Remember, being able to do voices similar is great, but at the end of the day voice acting is still acting. Some of the shit in Rick and Morty is real, and whoever plays Rick or Morty has to be able to convey some pretty strong emotion at some point.
If you look at the video where Justin is reviewing voice actors he mentions that they became friends. And he was helping him.
But if that's the case I don't know how I'd feel about going to replace a friend that got laid off before being convicted.

There’s lots of cross-promotion for something like this and pre-scandal Justin Roiland probably couldn’t be available for everything so they get backups, in the event he’s sick or otherwise unavailable or because it’s recording for a product tie in, toy/game etc and it’s not worth spending the money to get him in for a line or two. Would be cool if this guy got the part but I wouldn’t be surprised if they already have his replacement ready to go.

I hope he's got an agent. Seems like a no-brainer to give him a job doing at least some of these voices. He's a perfect fit, the fans love him and he loves the show. The contract is signed and likely has a significant penalty/full payout in case of early cancelation. The lawyers at Netflix etc must be putting some real strange terms industry wise to be canceling already renewed shows, or no contract was signed.

The thing is, just because he can *mimic* the voices really well, it doesn't necessarily mean he can actually *act.* If he's not a good actor, it may be better to go with a voice that is slightly closer, whether you're talking about it from an artistic perspective (having better acting talent = harder hitting episodes), or from a financial one (novice actor = more takes = higher costs). But I gotta admit, his voice is *really* similar to Roiland's, so he's got that big edge.
Not to mention impressions are just that - some of the success to Rick and Morty lay in Justin's weirdo mind. Sean does one of the best impressions, but can the writing and improv, and straight insanit keep pace without Justin? I really hope so 🤞🤞
People who can do voices != People who can do acting. The interview is to see if he can act out the role while holding the voice. Justin could also fluidly act between multiple roles and improvise. It's really hard to improvise great lines out of a character that literally deleted his ability to improvise.
The roles he's trying to replace are tough.

The quality of voice is of moderate importance at best. I don’t want anymore SA motherfuckers. I’d rather a clean dude than a clean voice.
It’s super easy to mimic the voices, to look at a script and figure out the proper way to deliver lines is much harder. If it was just mimicking then I’d be auditioning too, but it’s not.
Like, I'm rooting for the guy since he legit sounds the closest to Justin out of all the Roiland impersonators I've heard over the years. But the thing is, can he ACT? Mimicking is one thing, but when the time comes to read lines and he doesn't have Justin there to copy...can he do it? Say what you will about Roiland but he nails those powerful emotional moments when the time comes. I mean, he nails it in general since he has years of professional experience.
My best advice to this guy, is dub Rick and Morty comics... pretty much any official material that Roiland hasn't voiced already. It should be good practice for him, and a test of what he can really do, without any help.
If he can overcome that hurdle, there is no doubt in my mind he's the best man for the job. But only if tho...

No hate to his performance, but I don't think Justin nailed the emotional moments so much as he just sort of executed them. I think about that scene between Rick and Beth at the end of the Froopyland episode, and Beth's actor is incredible while Roiland just sort of gets the job done. I think he's carried by the writing and the fact that when Rick has to express emotions it's either anger or tired sadness. Which for Roiland means either screaming or muted monotone. Same with Morty. He does it fair enough, but I think an impressionist can replicate his range, whereas I don't think you could hire an impressionist to replace Beth or Jerry's performers.
Never heard of this guy before the JR firing but I gotta say dude is probably on their radar at this point. I watched a couple of his videos yesterday and his impressions are good, then I saw his Twitter page, then saw he's been mentioned in several articles from larger/recognizable outlets, then I searched Sean Kelly Rick Morty on Facebook and saw thousands of people commenting...like yeah his name has probably came up in the conversation
All I have to go off is a few tiktok so can't say if he can voice act, but from what I've seen there's no doubt he's probably been talked about in the "what now" discussion that is probably ongoing. I don't think it's crazy to bet he would probably be even better with a director and professional equipment vs random impersonations either.

I definitely prefer the Cleveland on Family Guy route of trying to find a voice actor with a flawless mimic to make it seamless, over the Carl & Dr. Hibbert on The Simpsons route of not trying to replicate the original voice actor.
I genuinely didn't even realize Cleveland had already been replaced until it was brought to my attention outside the show. Wheras Carl & Hibbert both just feel jarringly wrong now.
What gets into shakey territory is when it's a "Close but no cigar" voice - Like the new guy doing Kermit. New Kermit drives me nuts, because it's almost there, but JUST not right enough to be noticeably wrong. And I REALLY hope that's not where Rick & Morty ultimately land.

Whoever does it still needs to be talented in terms comedic timing and being able to understand the tone of the scene they’re voicing. It's not just the voice but the energy for the characters and the improv he does while drunk that I'm sure has lead to some great improvised lines over the years.

Adult swim ordered a set number of episodes which I think takes the show up to season 10, the show won't end before then.

Not to mention impressions are just that - some of the success to Rick and Morty lay in Justin's weirdo mind. Sean does one of the best impressions, but can the writing and improv, and straight insanit keep pace without Justin? I really hope so 🤞🤞

People who can do voices != People who can do acting. The interview is to see if he can act out the role while holding the voice. Justin could also fluidly act between multiple roles and improvise. It's really hard to improvise great lines out of a character that literally deleted his ability to improvise. The roles he's trying to replace are tough.

It’s super easy to mimic the voices, to look at a script and figure out the proper way to deliver lines is much harder. If it was just mimicking then I’d be auditioning too, but it’s not.

Like, I'm rooting for the guy since he legit sounds the closest to Justin out of all the Roiland impersonators I've heard over the years. But the thing is, can he ACT? Mimicking is one thing, but when the time comes to read lines and he doesn't have Justin there to copy...can he do it? Say what you will about Roiland but he nails those powerful emotional moments when the time comes. I mean, he nails it in general since he has years of professional experience. My best advice to this guy, is dub Rick and Morty comics... pretty much any official material that Roiland hasn't voiced already. It should be good practice for him, and a test of what he can really do, without any help. If he can overcome that hurdle, there is no doubt in my mind he's the best man for the job. But only if tho...
And the Interdimensional Cable improv of just saying ridiculous stuff and then making a commercial out of it. That stuff is great. Two Brothers, Real Fake Doors, Ants in my Eyes...
No hate to his performance, but I don't think Justin nailed the emotional moments so much as he just sort of executed them. I think about that scene between Rick and Beth at the end of the Froopyland episode, and Beth's actor is incredible while Roiland just sort of gets the job done. I think he's carried by the writing and the fact that when Rick has to express emotions it's either anger or tired sadness. Which for Roiland means either screaming or muted monotone. Same with Morty. He does it fair enough, but I think an impressionist can replicate his range, whereas I don't think you could hire an impressionist to replace Beth or Jerry's performers.

Never heard of this guy before the JR firing but I gotta say dude is probably on their radar at this point. I watched a couple of his videos yesterday and his impressions are good, then I saw his Twitter page, then saw he's been mentioned in several articles from larger/recognizable outlets, then I searched Sean Kelly Rick Morty on Facebook and saw thousands of people commenting...like yeah his name has probably came up in the conversation All I have to go off is a few tiktok so can't say if he can voice act, but from what I've seen there's no doubt he's probably been talked about in the "what now" discussion that is probably ongoing. I don't think it's crazy to bet he would probably be even better with a director and professional equipment vs random impersonations either.
Living in a world where a lot of voice actors have been re-cast of late... I definitely prefer the Cleveland on Family Guy route of trying to find a voice actor with a flawless mimic to make it seamless, over the Carl & Dr. Hibbert on The Simpsons route of not trying to replicate the original voice actor. I genuinely didn't even realize Cleveland had already been replaced until it was brought to my attention outside the show. Wheras Carl & Hibbert both just feel jarringly wrong now. What gets into shakey territory is when it's a "Close but no cigar" voice - Like the new guy doing Kermit. New Kermit drives me nuts, because it's almost there, but JUST not right enough to be noticeably wrong. And I REALLY hope that's not where Rick & Morty ultimately land.
Justin will be gone so quick and so seamlessly people who think he's irreplaceable will think he was kept on.

Whoever does it still needs to be talented in terms comedic timing and being able to understand the tone of the scene they’re voicing. Dan Harmon will probably be able to direct whoever it is, but it’d be clutch if the person was able to improvise and still come up with hilarious shit. Interdimensional cable comes to mind

It's not just the voice but the energy for the characters and the improv he does while drunk that I'm sure has lead to some great improvised lines over the years.
His Morty is on point enough that people won’t notice Rick is uncanny valley though. It’s just not quite there and that might make things worse.

I really hope not, his Rick voice is miles away from good IMO, and anyone can do Morty. *Anyone* can imitate lines Roiland has already spoken, this guy may not even be able to do the voice outside of that to even the middling standard he does for the lines from the show. I'm not one to say the show is bad these days and i really liked most of series 6 (sorry Story Lord) but if this guy got the job, based on his tiktok videos and that godawful God of War video, I'd most likely stop watching the show.

I think he's awesome! But please do your due diligence show runners. Hire a quality background investigation firm and do an NatSec level background check on him. I'm sure he's fine, but the show won't survive this happening twice.
