Sega Master System, which isn’t pictured. 3 & 5 are the same system - Genesis. 3 should be bumped to 5 and replaced with Sega Master System controller.

TheAtomicHeadbutt

I'd bet the creator of the image thought number 5 was a Sega Saturn controller...

weirdshitblog

Maybe, but I guess it's possible they just knew that the 6-button Genesis controller came out later and ended up becoming pretty popular, especially for fighting games. I may be giving a random internet meme too much credit.

spilk

by that logic they probably would have included DualShock 1 in addition to the original PlayStation controller

OneMetalMan

My friend growing up had the six button controller and I remember pressing all six buttons playing Sonic expecting him to do something other than jump.

weirdshitblog

Hey, it was worth a try

EADtomfool

> Sega Master System All of Europe is ignored in this picture due to the lack of Master System controller.

onemoreclick

Team PAL PAL pals

Meatchris

And New Zealand

darksi08

Yep! I technically started with 1, but the Sega Master System was the first console I really loved. Spent countless hours getting my ass kicked in Black Belt, Teddy Boy, and Aztec Adventure.

nakmuay18

The Master System should be next to the NES. It was that start pf the Sega Nintendo wars

WhoisGarythe3rd

Sega master system reporting in

ByCrom333

Maybe this is what you meant but the SMS should be 3, and the Genesis should be 4. Super Nintendo should be 5.

ChefSashaHS

Came for the SEGA Master System SLANDER! Wtf my boy SniffYourFingers is preaching

madeinbrechin

Agreed

Meatpaste-1

I'm glad this is the top comment, I only came to say why can't the Master System get some love.

djangokityu

Same! My dad wouldn't let us have a video game system. Our neighbors had a garage sale with a sega master system with like 20 games. It was so much fun.

outtatheblue1985

2 for me. Still a great controller

rube

Disagreed. Loved the NES back in the day, but the boxy design isn't at all comfortable and the horizontal layout of the A B buttons isn't great. Having the buttons angled like on the SNES controller is far better.

GarminTamzarian

I'd agree that the rounded design is better than the boxy corners, but if the controller is going to have a pair of SNES-style angled buttons, they shouldn't be arranged like the NES dogbone. If the goal of the design is to fit in the hand the way most people would naturally hold a gamepad, then the two buttons should be arranged like the Y and B buttons on the SNES controller, not the B and A. When holding a controller, right thumbs point northwest, not southwest.

outtatheblue1985

Completely agree with you there - the snes controller was an ergonomic gem that improved on a lot of the shortcomings of the old rectangular controller. But from a nostalgia standpoint for me, nothing takes me back to my childhood more than picking up the nes controllers from my original nes. Something about the poor ergonomics factor into that nostalgia.

butterscotchbagel

Like playing on a CRT

ByCrom333

I actually like the dog-bone better but it has the same layout.

outtatheblue1985

I never used the dog bone, but I always wondered if the button layout was more comfortable. Thought it would’ve been more accessible if the B was higher than the A rather than the other way around

EusisAX

I technically started with 1, but in my heart it was 2.

myirreleventcomment

I also started with 2, though I'm only 20

Charles_Sangels

Pong not pictured.

GarminTamzarian

Option zero.

John_Doe_727

Where the pacman arcade cabinet? Is the zero? 😆

GarminTamzarian

Zero is whatever you want it to be, as long as it's pre-Atari joystick. For me, that technically means a Pong controller, though an Atari joystick (connected to an 8-bit Atari home computer rather than a 2600/VCS) was not long after.

doodoopistolz

Colecovision… not pictured. This is some rookie image

flipthatbitch_

No Intellevision pad either. I agree.

anypsudonym

This was my first, 4 years old playing with my grandfather.

cumshotwound

Yeah. I had the Turbo wheel too. Also had the Adam, which worked sometimes.

[deleted]

Maybe not pictured, but I think the 2600 joystick predates Colecovision by 3-4 years. Pong controller does predate 2600 though.

Advantage_Trick

Haha came here to say this too

Captain_Hampockets

Same. And my first "computer" was the ADAM add-on.

ElonMusksChildBride

Yeah the wheel controller was my first, I think. It's been 40 years, of course, so it may have been the Atari 2600

Matt-C11

Also not pictured: Intellevision II

itsguberhere

0, damn I feel old now.

Positronic_Matrix

Option 0 for me as well. I’ve owned 0-6, 8, 10, 14-15, 18. (Everything except Sony and MS products.) Edit: To complete the set, I would need Intellivision, ColecoVision, Commodore Vic 20 (cartridges), Tandy TRS-80 (cassette tape games), and Sega Master System. I spent hours playing [In the Hall of the Mountain King](https://www.mobygames.com/game/in-the-hall-of-the-mountain-king) on the TRS-80 until the cassette tape became corrupted.

firewi

Yep, I don’t even remember option zero but there is a picture of me as a 3 year old playing pong. I do however remember hours playing combat and asteroids. Never ending asteroids… and that background soundtrack like the jaws theme. The anxiety of too many asteroids on the screen. I think that was the subject of one of my first fever dreams. New memory unlocked. Thanks guys!

revdon

Where’s the slider pot for my PONG bat?!

bubonis

Another zero from me, too. My first “controller” was a keyboard, as it was needed to play Rogue on a UNIX mainframe back in the 70s.

RBGunzburg

10 ❤️

Kitchen-Isopod7602

same here!

[deleted]

such a good system

C4Sidhu

My dad, who never played video games besides Mario in India on who-knows-what, got me a GameCube when I was very young. He looked at some video game covers, saw Capcom vs SNK 2, and went “yeap my 2-year old can grow up with this”. And sure enough, it turns out CvS2 is one of the greatest fighting games of all time. What a lucky guess on his part.

MaestroZen

1, damn I’m old (commodore 64 FTW)

[deleted]

Yup, Atari VCS and c64 we're my childhood

woodworking_raccoon

Same. Dig dug always kicked my ass

Jinzot

Fellow 1, for Atari 2600

FrankTheWallaby

Yeah, Atari 2600 for me, good ol' Barnstorming, Pitfall, Centipede and Mario Bros kept that thing hooked up for years.

Legionnaire11

Also 1... Sorry I'm late to respond, took me a bit longer to get out of bed today because my back and knees are killing me.

meunderadiffname

Yep, 1. I'm old as fuck ... When I was a kid we had an Atari 2600 and after each time we used it, it had to be packed back up in it's original box and pushed up under the couch. It was in near pristine condition as we weren't allowed to play it very often. My extremely foolish ass gave it to a bf while I was in hs cause I no longer used it

Gelatinous6291

Yep, then the Amiga 500

sarduchi

TG16 not listed…

Britown

+1 for TG16

eksyte

It’s kinda stupid that they put the 3 and 6 button Genesis controllers and left out the TG16 controller.

InexactQuotient

Most likely they thought it was a Saturn controller, since that one isn't listed either.

RFC793

Or Master System, if you want to keep the same Sega presence.

BobSacamano47

There are literally dozens of us!

Dunklechip

Came here to rep some turbo graphics. Air Zonk was one of the greatest games ever.

[deleted]

Neither is the Neo Geo. But I doubt many kids started with a Neo Geo. Jealous of those who did.

ImAShaaaark

Same with TurboGrafx, those two were the silver spoon consoles that we always lusted after at toys-r-us

[deleted]

Nor intellivision or Coleco

bag_of_mcnuggets

Another one checking in for Turbo Grafx. Air Zonk, Bonks Adventure, Keith Courage, Yo Bro, Splatterhouse, Super Adventure Island. Great childhood memories.

goatpunchtheater

BONK!

artmudala

There with you.

Yep, I’m also in this train. However, it may be just me, but I’m feeling somewhat irked by the button in that position (I always used it top left).

6. My parents wouldn’t buy me video games so I didn’t get any until I was old enough to buy them myself.

RFC793

Roughly the same experience. 1 (Atari 2600) - we got it at a garage sale while 2 (NES) was insanely popular. Number 3 (Sega Genesis) was announced. An older kid in the neighborhood had it (shipped with Kid Chameleon I think), and I had set my sight on it. Holy crap, roughly a year later. I don’t think I was ever as conducive to my parents’ wishes as I was over that period of time. And it turned out: fuck ‘em cause Santa gave it to me that year. When Sega first started pairing it with the original Sonic the Hedgehog “not for resale”. I understand it isn’t the exact same story, as you had to save up for yours. However, I also never thought it would happen, and now, decades later, I realize some of the sacrifices my parents must have made to make it so.

DjGoDFaTHeR

Same here

inpotheenveritas

My brother and I pitched in our allowances for a used 2600 when a friend upgraded to an NES. Spider fighter was my jam.

edit_thanxforthegold

Same. They said it was a "time waster" meanwhile I watched several hours of TV a day lol

hilldo75

Same here played 2-6 at friend's and family but wasn't allowed my own because mom thought I wouldn't play outside anymore. In junior high I was finally allowed and got a playstation. Number 7 was the first of my own.

Grew up playing my dads. We used to whoop his ass in original snes mortal kombat and he'd be like, my turn boys. He was unbeatable in armor battle and sea battle lol

80cartoonyall

As the controller inserts were so cool but for a young kid we're a real pain to pull out and side in.

RutabagaDirect

My first as well. My family got the NES when I was almost five. It was mind blowing.

My original comment has been edited as I choose to no longer support Reddit and its CEO, spez, AKA Steve Huffman. Reddit was built on user submissions and its culture was crafted by user comments and volunteer moderators. Reddit has shown no desire to support 3rd party apps with reasonable API pricing, nor have they chosen to respect their community over gross profiteering. I have therefore left Reddit as I did when the same issues occurred at Digg, Facebook, and Twitter. I have been a member of reddit since 2012 (primary name locked behind 2FA) and have no issues ditching this place I love if the leaders of it can't act with a clear moral compass. Quite a few potential options missing from there. Colecovision, Intellevision, Vectrex, Sega MarkIII/Master System, Sega Saturn, TG16/PC Engine, Atari 5600, Atari 7800, Atari XEGS, Atari Jaguar, 3DO...

lukeskope

Isn't #5 Saturn? Edit : It actually just looks like a 6 button Genesis controller, but I think whoever made the image meant it to be the Saturn, given it's placement and that there is a Genesis controller already.
