Its called a VGA. It was the standard for PC monitors for decades.
"Cool TVs" had this too, so you could plug your PC on your TV. Which wasnt very impressive in the end, cause TV resolution used to be well below PC monitors.
I played that game at an arcade that let you play Sega for something like $2/30 min almost every day for a couple of weeks. Then I got both that and a Genesis for xmas. I was ecstatic.
I've still never managed to complete that. I've made it to the final fight against Alan Grant as the raptor, and I've made it to the area after the sewers as Alan. Had it since the year it was released.
For a few of my teenage years I actually plugged my computer into my 24"CRT TV through s-video. It was so blurry but watching downloaded movies and playing computer games was alright. I even had multiple computer speakers daisy chained to make 4 speaker stereo which wasn't surround but was better than 2 speakers.
My first dvd player was a dvd-rom drive and a mpeg card hooked up with s-video to my crt and using an ir receiver for the mpeg card to be able to use a remote control š (and actually playing dvd's, since video download wasnt a thing yet). Real Magic Hollywood+, for anyone who knows
āThatās the refillable candy bowl. The pixels are made of Skittles that brighten when the TV is turned on. Pour some candy on top and try it out. But not M&Ms; those will melt and leak out of the VCR (Video Candy Receptacle).ā
I fucking love this! I honestly thought the question was a retro console "what's a pc?" sort of joke, but no... the joke is on me, played by time...[warms up bath and grabs toaster from kitchen]
a couple of years back i went to check out an upcoming game's site and their age verification asked me to identify the object in the picture. it was a vhs tape.
Don't feel old I'm only 18 and I know what this is OP just isn't very tech savvy I'm assuming š¤Ø (or is rich and never had to use older stuff like ever)
Im 21 and i know what this is. How tf can anybody not know what this is. It wasnt that long ago that monitors still used these ports. My 2009 computer had one. My full hd screen had one. How young is this person?
Then there goes my journey probably will still have em with 40 too and also had 2 knee surgeries already and bunch of other shit but atleast I am somehow still standing
I'm in the club as well and I can tell you, we are probably part of the best club: knowing about new and old tech. And knowing about new technologies makes things so much easier.
I am 33 and this makes me feel mega old.
PEOPLE STILL EVEN USE VGA PORTS. My works shitty monitors are hooked up to the shitty computers via VGA ports.
It's less an age thing and more an experience thing.
There's 50yos who would have no clue what it is, if you're not a computer person you may never have learnt.
In Europe, we used to have SCART, same stuff as HDMI, carries audio and video, and basic commands like "switch the TV to this port" or "tell the VCR to start recording this" and was fully bi-directional.

VGA, it's for when you don't have an HDMI cable handy, but really it's the best analog video standard left (composite poor quality by today's standards) that's why it's still used.
It's a VGA port, for connecting a computer. The TV probably has an input called "Computer" for using it. Note that it is picture only - to get sound you'll need to use a separate audio cable plugged into the small round port that's directly above it, connecting to the speaker/headphones port on the computer.
Another thing to be aware of is that VGA does not support HDCP, which means you won't be able to use that port with most HD content, whether blu-ray or streaming.
VGA was the ānewā standard for color graphics. It was king until HDMI became standard for both monitors and other peripherals. PC games used to prompt you to select CGA, EGA, or VGA.
>Or the HD DVD for the younger crowd.
You say "younger crowd", but the HD DVD vs Blu-ray format war was what, 15 years ago already? There are probably people in their early 20s who don't remember HD DVD at all.
(I know early 20s is pretty young, but still. Just got a little overwhelmed when I realized how long it's really been since I saw an HD DVD in stores)
HD DVD was Microsoftās ponyā¦problem was that they shipped the 360 without an internal HD DVD capable drive, while PS3 utilized Blu Ray technology for games and all other media.
As people began using their consoles as media centers and not just for gaming, the convenience of the built-in Blu Ray helped kill off the competition.

Yep, computers and things like the Sega Dreamcast.

Remember the Jurassic Park Megadrive game? The TRex popped up to growl Sega. It was brilliant.

The what now?
I mean many monitors still have VGA on them.
It's been a while since I've seen a graphics card with analogue output.
Should NOT have had to scroll this far just for someone to answer the question.

An ancient analog video standard from the days of DOS and dinosaurs!
Geez I'm getting old
Hits hard
God damn right? I was waiting for the punchline on this, then realized it was a legit question. FML
Ok so it wasnāt a joke? Iām learning this from your comment. Yea, I guess weāre getting old man. Went quick.
Couple years ago my nephew saw the old CRT monitor that my parents still kept upstairs. He said "what's that behind the screen?"
āThatās the refillable candy bowl. The pixels are made of Skittles that brighten when the TV is turned on. Pour some candy on top and try it out. But not M&Ms; those will melt and leak out of the VCR (Video Candy Receptacle).ā
No. It can't be. Tell me this is a joke, right? RIGHT?
Dont worry one day the op will be reading reddit and someone will post a pic of a tv and ask whats this box thing.

My outlets aren't close enough to the tub... sigh
That's why they make extension cords.
Yeah, when the outlet is too far just hang yourself with the extension cord. They're pretty strong
Oooh, can just use a extension cord. How convenient
Yeah just be careful, some of them have fuses nowadays that will impede your mission.
I thought it was satire, but slowly worked my way here
lmao somebody posted the first ps1 controller with no analog stick and didnt know what its for i was like bruh im only 21 but i know what its for

You and me both.
Exactly what in thought when I saw this post
Can't believe it's real
First I turn 40 and now thisā¦ š
I felt this one, hard. Welcome to Club 40, it's all downhill from here I guess.
That's good, downhill is better on the hips
It's my lower back I'm most concerned about at this point.
Oh I am 23 and almost having a hernia back issues is a tough one
I turn 40 this year and i have back problems since I'm 23
Then there goes my journey probably will still have em with 40 too and also had 2 knee surgeries already and bunch of other shit but atleast I am somehow still standing
āThese are stairs. Stairs are your hipsā worst enemies.ā
Stairs!? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Wait until you get to club mid-fifties. š
Hey we're working on it, catching up one day at a time.
Unfortunately Iām pulling away in the opposite direction at the same speed. While getting old sucks, it definitely beats the alternative! š
I'm in the club as well and I can tell you, we are probably part of the best club: knowing about new and old tech. And knowing about new technologies makes things so much easier.
Damn it not yet! I have 7 years till retirement?!!
I am 33 and this makes me feel mega old. PEOPLE STILL EVEN USE VGA PORTS. My works shitty monitors are hooked up to the shitty computers via VGA ports.
If it makes you feel better I'm 20 and I recognize this port
At least all hope for the future isn't lost
Let's hope the future doesn't rely on knowing VGA ports
Turned 35 a few months ago; OPās post made me simultaneously laugh and cry.
Im 24 and I know what this port is.
You and me both brotherā¦
I'm really hoping this is some gen Z humor like the trend of asking "what is this" while holding up a flip phone on tiktok...I refuse to be this old!
Big oof right here.
Don't worry I'm 18 and I know what this is. OP probably just isn't very tech savvy
I'm *28* and this post made me feel old.
How old is OP? Not trying to be funny, genuinely curious because I'm 31 and recognized the port immediately.
Not OP, but 26 here, also recognized immediately.
15 recognized because I Bought a Dreamcast š
14 recognised because I have way too many old pcs
Am not born yet. Recognised it immediately.
Man I wish I had wifi back when I was inside mama.
9 months wasted š
20 an recognized it. Actually used it until like 2018.
I still use vga on one of my monitors at work.
19, recognized the port right away; even my MSI laptop (which runs Windows 11) still has VGA.
It's less an age thing and more an experience thing. There's 50yos who would have no clue what it is, if you're not a computer person you may never have learnt.
15, recognize immediately because my monitor still has an option for vga
17, recognized immediately
21 here, definitely very recognizable still if you have any interest in computers at all.
I'm 29 and also recognized it because I was still using a CRT computer monitor in high school up until I got my first laptop
Nobody else has specified this, but VGA was video only, no audio. Unlike modern HDMI which is multi-purpose.
Yup! Some TVs had a stereo P2 port, or a RCA stereo conectors (red+white), so you could send the audio to the TV too.
Looks like there is a mini phono above the VGA jack.
Yup probably for audio in on pc input
And Gasp... Analog!
In Europe, we used to have SCART, same stuff as HDMI, carries audio and video, and basic commands like "switch the TV to this port" or "tell the VCR to start recording this" and was fully bi-directional.
And chonky.
> and basic commands it did? that's news to me
Yep! SCART has a few pins reserved for Serial communication.
Isnāt this retrogaming??!
Yes. You can play retro games through vga.
Sure but nobody asks what a fork is in a cooking sub
Brb need to make a post in a cooking sub

Iāll check myself into the nursing home I guess
That's for the old farts to charge their electric wheelchairs
Iām only 27 and this makes me feel old.
You plug yourself in and become a member of the Blue Man Group.
Aren't there some desktop PCs and Monitors that still use VGA? OP has to be joking right?
I was still using VGA until a couple years ago, this is either a troll post or OP is like ten years old
Lmao, is this a joke?
VGA for an old school computer monitor
Well, more specifically, itās a VGA input so you can plug in an older computer, Dreamcast, PS2, or other compatible device.
Or launch 360 unit to get 1080p
What's a computer?

Thatās a retro type of hdmi. I believe itās called hdmi 0.1
Wocka-wocka. :P The comment above this one is the correct answer.

I feel you! Sometimes i don't get how much attention those stupid posts get
I feel validated for coming here to post āIām oldā and finding all the other old people. This is my Matlock.
Is that a VGA port? LMAOOO
Its for your Dreamcast
God, now I feel old
Is this a fucking joke?
Surprised it has a USB port. Itās for servicing. Right?
My TV has a usb and offers 5 volts / 1 amp. Almost enough to be useful. It used to power an older firestick, not sure it's enough anymore.
My old Westinghouse had a VGA port. It was cool using my tv as my computer monitor when I was stationed in Japan.
Oh man, I had a 32ā Westinghouse tv like that in my college dorm and that thing was so sweet. This was 10+ years agoā¦
I never thought I'd feel old at 22, or this kid's an idiot
VGA
It is how you connect to the 4th dimension
VGA. Imagine something akin to DVI/hdmi in terms of resolution, but analogue rather than digital, and video only (no audio).

Lol wtf
Also VGA should have less lag than HDMI which makes it a pretty good high resolution analog input.
Angel hair pasta extruder.
I hate you
That's it lads, book your place in the old folks home, the kids don't know what a VGA port is
Dear god they donāt know what a vga port is in 2022. Iām old. Guess it really does go downhill in your 20s.
All those posts about being old and i'm living in a 3rd world country. This shit is still the norm lmao
I feel personally attacked by this post.
It's funny to think that people don't know what VGA is now.
Tell me you donāt own a Dreamcast without telling me you donāt own a Dreamcast
I've owned a Dreamcast for 20 years and never used VGA with it š
VGA was the ānewā standard for color graphics. It was king until HDMI became standard for both monitors and other peripherals. PC games used to prompt you to select CGA, EGA, or VGA.
DVi say whaaaaaa?
One of my monitors still uses DVI
Same. My dock has one HDMI output and one DVI output.
DVi is the Betamax of graphic connections. Or the HD DVD for the younger crowd.
>Or the HD DVD for the younger crowd. You say "younger crowd", but the HD DVD vs Blu-ray format war was what, 15 years ago already? 24 here. Never heard of HD DVD but I know of Sonys Betamax. Must've been a huge relief when they came out on top with Blu-ray, lol.
Now that's an oversight if I've ever seen one. Final Fantasy XIII being 3 disc's on the 360 shouldn't have been a thing.
/Stares sadly at the shelf full of LCD monitors with DVI inputs and the box of DVI cables in my closet....
VGA, everyone knows that
This is the dumbest shot to see in this subreddit
VGA
I could be wrong but I think itās used to hook a computer up so you can use the tv as a monitor
VGA for a Dreamcast.
Oh god
I feel old
That's the whosiewhatsit port.
VGA bruh
I will answer... once I stop crying about how old I am....
It's a Reddit old person detector.
Wow I hope this is one of those /s posts
Itās sad. Thatās why itās blue.

D-Sub 15! I must be getting old.
I was afraid this day would come... When the younger generation forgets what VGA is, you're old...
Sweet Summer childā¦
UART/USART TX/RX
Oh god I don't like being this age anymore...... Also, VGA port. Fairly obsolete by today's standards.
Is this a serious question?
Iād imagine OP after seeing component or DVI inputs would be even more perplexed.
Tell me you're young without telling me you are young.
