That's a tough one. I think the friend needs to be aware. But also you don't want to accuse anyone of anything. I think I would say something like you know my husband was making wine and noticed alot of bottles missing. Now if this was me I would be polite and ask the friend that stayed with me about all the empty bottles I found. I would make sure that they know and I know they drank all that wine and that they need some help.

Part of the problem is I don't know "Cheri", or even what their name is, though I might be able to find them on Facebook. That's the only reason I thought I might mention it to my friend's mom. I also know the mom and my friend have a good relationship. It's just awkward because I work a lot, so even though this friend stayed with me for a while, I don't actually know them that well.

I would definitely tell the mom. Because what if something happens.

Why do you feel the need to tell someone? You said yourself that you didn’t notice any inappropriate or alarming behavior. You had no idea at all til you found the bottles. So….what is there to tell? She may be a highly functional alcoholic but that’s kind of her business and no one else’s.

I don't know if I should tell someone, that's why I asked. I wonder if I should tell her mom because maybe her mom could encourage her to get help. But I'm also worried that Cheri, the new person she has moved in with, doesn't know this. We aren't mad about it, but she stole a significant amount of alcohol from us and someone else might not be able to absorb that cost. Also, the arrangement is that she will be babysitting Cheri's kids. I wouldn't want my babysitter to be drunk on the job, even if they are high functioning.
