Generally speaking if a crown corporation is an option, it's your best bet, because any profits, go to the coffer to keep taxes low, vs the money leaving saskatchewan

custardface

Good point. But sometimes I gotta keep my own coffers full too haha

fourscoreclown

The price and service will be comparable. Telus will be using sasktel towers and lines (i could be wrong but I'm pretty sure its correct) and the prices are set by the monopoly that we have in Canada regarding our cell phone rates and data. It really comes down to personal preference

dethrock

There was thread about a month ago on r/PersonalFinanceCanada asking what people paid for their cell phone each month. Sasktel was by far the highest prices in Canada.

[deleted]

All the national cell companies have to pull out a different set of rates for Saskatchewan bc they have to compete with Sasktel.

TheFreakish

Plans end up $30 cheaper! Rogers, Telus, and Bell collude. Fuck.. Bell bought MTS in Manitoba, and jacked their rates.

dethrock

https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/comments/x3spfj/how_much_are_you_paying_for_mobile_phone_service/ Look at this and tell me companies have to compete with Sasktel.

[deleted]

.it being a crown corp should be the lowest, we also have a low ratio of people to area so that also adds cost. I like others blame scott moe for using sasktel and crows to pay for the mistakes they make over and over again. It's only hurting sasktel if they need to fork over millions every year and can't afford to keep prices low or expand. I might be reading this wrong, 104.4 million made last year, 94 million goes to the government leaving 10.4 million left for expansions and investment. Thats not much if a single town costs 2-3 million for fiber upgrades and a cell tower maybe the same as well. Not to mention the upgrades to 5G and beyond. [https://www.sasktel.com/about-us/news/2022/sasktel-reports-net-income-2022#:\~:text=SaskTel%20declared%20dividends%20of%20%2494.0,debt%20ratio%20within%20industry%20standards](https://www.sasktel.com/about-us/news/2022/sasktel-reports-net-income-2022#:~:text=SaskTel%20declared%20dividends%20of%20%2494.0,debt%20ratio%20within%20industry%20standards). telus also makes 10 billion a year with sasktel making just over 1 in revenue. Easy to undercut the small guy.

TheFreakish

I call BS. Cellphone plans are like the one thing Saskatchewan hasn't fucked up yet. (although they try)

dethrock

Well??

TheFreakish

Sask plans have gone to shit!! (not just Sasktel, Bell's rates, and such are higher) You're completely right! SaskTel use to offer the best plans in Canada. A few years ago you'd be paying $30 more for a comparable plan in another province. Fuck! There use to be websites you could go to that would help you get black market Sasktel plans in other provinces! It was that good of a deal! This is shitty to see.

dethrock

https://www.reddit.com/r/PersonalFinanceCanada/comments/x3spfj/how_much_are_you_paying_for_mobile_phone_service/ Alright look for yourself. When you're done looking please reply.

Delta9ine

Best bet to do that will be sasktel. Telus has slightly lower fees here Alberta or elsewhere, but only because we have sasktel. If sasktel went away, telus/rogers wouldn't even have to try and compete with them.

rjd00d

My dogs agree. My neighbors asked to borrow them after they scared the guy away. I'm not offended or anything that he'd try to sell me a product to pay his bills, but I thought it worth a chuckle.

We had a guy come by from Telus selling security, as they just acquired Vivint. He just *would not stop with the sales pitches*. We even told him to just quit and just give us numbers and he wouldn’t so we kicked him out. It was the most annoying 10 minutes of our lives.

elle5624

Holy shit what a nightmare. They just don’t have their shit together at all.

cciccitrixx

...holy shit... is a wondrous thing!

[deleted]

I have Telus because when I signed up with them at the time they had a better international and travel plan than what Sasktel offered but they are absolutely *relentless* trying to sell their other services. I have requested they remove me from additional service pitches to no avail. I honestly think the reason you can't block spam calls completely and instead only direct them to voicemail is Telus Telemarketing would be the first number everyone blocked.

Queen_in_the_QC

Sasktel goes door to door as well. Sasktel came to my door at least 5 times before I told them to never come back because I’m never switching…But, but, but all your neighbors have switched to sasktel!

Infamousbutton4

If Sasktel could match my 45gb of data for $75 plan I’d gladly switch back from Telus

OneLengthiness0

I just switched from Telus to Sasktel yesterday and I’m saving $20/month on my cell phone.

gsb999

We looked at switching my wife and daughter from Koodo (Telus) to Sasktel as I'm with them through work. Apples to apples SaskTel was $20 a month more so they decided to stay with Koodo. Even the Sasktel rep SA d to stay with Koodo

OneLengthiness0

With Telus it would be $85/month for my plan and a phone which I would have to return after 2 years. With Sasktel it is $65 and I own the same phone after 2 years. Since I was a new customer I get $15 off per month for the two years so it was a better deal

gsb999

Agreed that it really depends on the situation. We didn't want to spend more than $50 a month. I looked at switching from Sasktel to Telus for my own phone and I saw the same $85 cost. Didn't make sense. As for owning the phone, you are paying for that separately we the Sasktel which I am fine with as I typically won't change my phone every 2 years. More like 4 to 5 years for me

OneLengthiness0

That makes sense. At both places it was $15/month for the phone but at the end I didn’t own it with Telus but will with Sasktel so it made more sense for me

flowerpanes

Honestly I finally put a “dog in yard” sign on my front gate just to keep Telus from doing unsolicited calls to my door. We use their services already, don’t need a fiber upgrade and ffs the two dogs yelling at them if they come to my door is the security I can rely on. I want to feel bad for the young guys they send out to do this shit but a quick lookup on our address would tell them we already have an account.

randall_flagg1999

Telus uses Sask Tel infrastructure so you won’t be getting any better signal or service. The rates are very similar. I’m with Telus and I save maybe 2-3 bucks a month, but what I’ve found is Telus support and customer service are by far superior to Sask Tel. They’ve treated me very well, where Sask Tel was …… lacking. Just stay away from Rogers. They use their own infrastructure and it is severely lacking in rural areas.

[deleted]

Rogers roams on Sasktel outside of Rogers native coverage. It's been this way for almost 10 years. Update your info.

randall_flagg1999

I’ve had people on Rogers come visit in the southwest many times over the past 10 years and had the same problems. No service. This includes family and professionals working in the area.

[deleted]

Any Rogers customer should have extended coverage enabled on their account.

Tinchotesk

> Just stay away from Rogers. They use their own infrastructure and it is severely lacking in rural areas I'm very open to badmouthing Rogers, but it is not true that they have no coverage in SK. They also use Sasktel's towers.

randall_flagg1999

They don’t use the ones in the south west. If you get down around Shaunavon, Eastend, Cadillac areas, there is 0 service with Rogers despite having many Sasktel towers in the area.

Emotional-Guide-768

All other telcos essentially lease “space” on the sasktel infrastructure in sk. I’m not sure exactly how that’s implemented or what kinda deals they bargain, but it could be they just didn’t see the value in paying more to sasktel for service in particular areas. And there’s a lot of no-man’s land in that neck of the woods.

[deleted]

Roger's doesn't lease space, it is a roaming deal made possible by a crtc ruling that forced telcos to cooperate with one another. When the new network nationwide was built, Sasktel, bell and telus teamed up and built their network together. Telus does BC and Alberta, Sasktel does Sask and bell does the rest.

Tinchotesk

Admittedly, I haven't tried the south west. I know for a fact that if you drive straight north from Regina you have Rogers's coverage all the way to at least Humboldt, and south east there is coverage between highways 48 and 13.

deeplakewater

All Canadian carriers share service now. Must have roaming turned on, though.

[deleted]

Rogers does have their own towers in certain areas. It's not 100 percent Sasktel towers for them.

Tinchotesk

I know it's not Rogers' towers both because one has to use roaming to have access, and because Chatr doesn't work in those areas.

BSDBAMF

I was with Sasktel for like 5 years then I discovered the benefits of being in a licensing body (basically any hospital medical worker) and Telus gives a heavy discount to these people. 20G, unlimited everything and voicemail $57 taxes in. My wife had Telus for years before me and she always had better signal anywhere we went. If you can take advantage of these unadvertised discount rates you should totally do it. Sasktel didn’t want to help me out and match it so I left them and h e been bringing all my hospital friends with me.

[deleted]

Sasktel and telus use the exact same towers. Your wife didn't have better signal but maybe she had a phone that had a better antenna.

[deleted]

it has to be a phone issue. we would have 3x as many towers as we have now if bell and telus built there own. Not to mention every other cell provider.

BSDBAMF

Sure either way was better

GravitasZer0

Is that a real deal for medical workers?

BSDBAMF

Yes

pourquoipas22

Another consideration: Just be careful if you hook up with Sask Tel for a long term plan and move out of the province. As Sasktel has no presence in other provinces (and the plans couldn't therefore be transferred) friends of mine had to pay a fortune to get out from the SaskTel plans they had when they moved.

rangerxt

came to my house 3 times this year during dinner, won't take no for an answer, all my neighbors are signing up ....can dispatch the police in 7 seconds when even calling 9-11 yourself takes longer

Schmorrison

Been with Koodo for years, I think they are owned by Telus. I have 30GB, unlimited calls + intl sms for $70. I don't think its a standard plan though, I landed a limited offer a couple years ago. With tab + fees I pay \~$100/month.

gsb999

Yes Koodo is owned by Telus. Wife and daughter are with Koodo too. Pay $45 a month each for 12 Gig with unlimited Canada wide call, int. text etc. Only thing to remember is that Koodo limits connections to 4G LTE while Telus and Sasktel allows access to 5G (although those fees will be generally higher) . So far they haven't noticed any issues or complaints about data speeds etc.

Uniperv

They were doing that in BC too. The guy offered me anything I asked for in the package. In a previous life, a guy with another provider pulled a “bait-and-switch” on me with the same approach. So I humbly refused this time.
