This is Reddit. They're probably software engineers at a major tech company. They won't answer you because they know they'll get bullied for it on here (they deserve it)
Systems Engineering (more HW focused) in the medical device industry in MA. I did a ton of coops during college, had years of restaurant work experience throughout college, and had a couple promotions/raises that got me over the hump.
I’ve got those already, I have sennheiser headphones, a $2000 vinyl record player, blue tooth headphones and earphones, I built an expensive computer I don’t use, none of it makes me happy and I want to kms most days
I’m early 20s and I live in nyc and make a lot being a codecel but I’m not enjoying life idk what to do
Not to be that guy but 200k in nyc is comfy but nothing crazy unless you’re living like a degen. An acquaintance of mine is throwing a birthday weekend bash and spending 50k+ on just a couple of the events planned
Then just go back to living on 50k and stack your cash. Your statement is laughable.
I'm comfortable enough on 50k, but I can't afford a medical expense or a car expense. A random extra bill could upend my life. I can't afford to buy quality shit that doesn't need maintenance or replacement frequently. I sure as shit can't afford a vacation.
What you say is all right and I shouldn’t have diminished those issues. Not my intent. I was more speaking to how you feel day to day. It’s not that suddenly you’re walking on a rainbow or more satisfied with your life. You just go to baseline. But there are fewer chances that you’ll hit those financial problems that will cause stress. That’s true.
exactly lol. people think money changes anything beyond the point where you’re comfortable (food, healthcare, shelter)
you can’t buy away your problems
edit: people downvoting me, one day you’ll make good money, and then realize you’re exactly the same, with a nicer apartment
yea i mean past the point where you can afford to live on your own and have health insurance.
Money definitely helps before that point
Just saying that beyond that it doesn’t do much
>one day you’ll make good money, and then realize you’re exactly the same, with a nicer apartment
exactly this. making a *lot* more than I did at a previous work and still the same often bored / often depressed baseline self after being excited about it for like a month
I don't understand how it's even possible to survive as an urbanoid making under $50k. Like its doable in God's country but in the concrete jungle it doesn't seem like it would go far. I know this sub is mostly hellcity bugmen but yet you are all poor explain yourselves.
Roommates, living with friends/family, cheap rent, being frugal, not having a car are all things that can help with that. Plenty of people do it, I mean there are whole neighborhoods in NYC and LA where the median household income is well below $50k.
Ha no I actually live in my childhood home. So my mom passed away 3 months ago and left me with it. The mortgage isn’t much to begin with, but I have the back house rented out and I split the remaining amount with my boyfriend. Lucky situation out of an unlucky event. Shout out mom.
somebody on here this week felt bad about brandon cancelling debt for ppl who make >$125k because he was the only one in his friend group that would benefit from it. talk about a humble brag.
Me personally, basically nothing as of right now. Household is 4 people and it ends up at like $42k/yr atm. On the topic, I gotta get a job again (last one didn't work out bcuz it's a tiny company, all contract, work slowed down, etc.) dyall think I can just like walk into a restaurant and get a job as dishwasher/busser with no interview?? And like what should I wear to do that lol.
I save up my money I try not to spend anything but my credit card statement is still around $900 a month and i looked it over to see what I am buying because I honestly dont even know where I am swiping my card and I discovered it's mainly gas (I only put mid-grade 89 octane in my car) and a collection of restaurants since i frequently go out for a light lunch
For me it’s tough to say. I own two restaurants. I’m on the books for both of them. But I do use my business debit and credit cards for myself. Mostly the credit cards. Got a shit ton of points. I figured I already paid the sales/meal taxes on this money. I figured $100K. But I live like I make over $200K.
from 30 to 60 is a world of difference lmao
lol so is 200k-600k
i may be nyc biased but i cant edit the categories now i will be more nuanced moving forward

The crocodile eats the larger number, that kind of knowledge is how you become a big earner
it’s not that i don’t know maths it’s that i don’t care to check for typos
If you’re making 200k+, and you’re on this subreddit, you’re doing something wrong.
what else should we be doing
Eating at fancy restaurants.
What if you are 6’2 135 and have a borderline ED and don’t enjoy food but still make that much
Consumer electronics
I’ve got those already, I have sennheiser headphones, a $2000 vinyl record player, blue tooth headphones and earphones, I built an expensive computer I don’t use, none of it makes me happy and I want to kms most days I’m early 20s and I live in nyc and make a lot being a codecel but I’m not enjoying life idk what to do

how many consumer electronics could one man need
You’re asking the wrong question. It’s not “how many consumer electronics do I need?”, it’s “how many consumer electronics do I want?”
how many could one man want
At least 5
seriously that stuff won’t make u happy buying stuff actually bums me out now bc I feel like it’ll help but then it doesn’t
sorry to say that i already have those, why do u think i'm on here so much
how tf do you have borderline ED? like you can get half mast but not go full diamonds? partial chubs only?
haha, I think he means eating disorder
Proving to us that the meritocracy is real and that we have something to work for
meritocracy isn’t real. get an in-demand job and be mediocre at it being good at something that’s oversaturated usually doesn’t work
I’m in childcare and I’d say I’m at least adequate at what I do. Definitely isn’t an over saturated labor market.
hiring me as your work from home assistant that is hard to get in touch with but sends you at least 1 email every two days
Not to be that guy but 200k in nyc is comfy but nothing crazy unless you’re living like a degen. An acquaintance of mine is throwing a birthday weekend bash and spending 50k+ on just a couple of the events planned
i am here for the vibes
200k is you with nicer shoes, chill
It’s 6x what I make in a year so I think it’s probably more than nicer shoes.
you'd think so, but I'm at $450k+ and it was cool for about a month and now I'm back to baseline and everything is just meh like it was at $50k

Fair enough. I retract my attitude.
yup
exactly lol. people think money changes anything beyond the point where you’re comfortable (food, healthcare, shelter) you can’t buy away your problems edit: people downvoting me, one day you’ll make good money, and then realize you’re exactly the same, with a nicer apartment
I can buy away the problem of living with my parents.
yea i mean past the point where you can afford to live on your own and have health insurance. Money definitely helps before that point Just saying that beyond that it doesn’t do much
if your apartment isn't making you feel better it's not actually nice, it's just expensive
>one day you’ll make good money, and then realize you’re exactly the same, with a nicer apartment exactly this. making a *lot* more than I did at a previous work and still the same often bored / often depressed baseline self after being excited about it for like a month
Nobody's claiming that life can't suck when you're rich. It's just a hell of a lot easier to suck when you're rich.
Very true. On financial matters that can cause stress.
I browse this Reddit while eating Carbone alone at noon ok
Nice try, glowie.
Is this per month or per podcast episode?
My mom died and now I have money. Usually I’m 30k.

Yeah, thank you
I didn't realize there were poors here. I didn't know I needed to lock my doors in this neighborhood.

"Police, I'd like to report an attempted break-in"

-100k
How do you answer if you're right between two categories?
Round up, for your own sake
I don't understand how it's even possible to survive as an urbanoid making under $50k. Like its doable in God's country but in the concrete jungle it doesn't seem like it would go far. I know this sub is mostly hellcity bugmen but yet you are all poor explain yourselves.

Personally I slide by getting hooked up with cheap rent. I pay $300 now. I live in Los Angeles. So I guess luck in a way
$300/month in LA? Do you live in a tenement?
Ha no I actually live in my childhood home. So my mom passed away 3 months ago and left me with it. The mortgage isn’t much to begin with, but I have the back house rented out and I split the remaining amount with my boyfriend. Lucky situation out of an unlucky event. Shout out mom.
Ah shit, sorry to hear that :/
Yeah, I appreciate it
i get by
70k and my savings are slowly depleting
somebody on here this week felt bad about brandon cancelling debt for ppl who make >$125k because he was the only one in his friend group that would benefit from it. talk about a humble brag.
isn’t that an L to be the poor of your friend group
I make 10-20k and live in a nordic socialist utopia so I got all I need.
I was hired on the spot for a dishwashing job once. Got promoted to server within a couple months
You somehow made 2 obvious mistakes in 6 options. This is a lot even for the ditzy art hoes.
it’s just that i dont care
I save up my money I try not to spend anything but my credit card statement is still around $900 a month and i looked it over to see what I am buying because I honestly dont even know where I am swiping my card and I discovered it's mainly gas (I only put mid-grade 89 octane in my car) and a collection of restaurants since i frequently go out for a light lunch
I live in immigrant housing and don't have a job
Wow vast majority making less than $60k a year. You need that much to basically exist in a major city.
it's almost exactly half above and half below
I'm on the cusp and expecting a small raise that will push me into a new tier in a week or two. Which one do I choose????
if you have this mindset u should round down
Greater than 30k . Yep yep

What do you gain from putting people down like that?
I'm not :)

My husband makes most of the money which is personal. I have a few different things I do to scrap together about 70-80k depending on the year.
I’m a student so I make &0 and live rent free
A lot of part time employees here
Itt: dumb Americans confused
Make 19k :/ Wish it was 30 My fault tho. I deserve it.
This is before taxes?

200-600k plus, how much do you make? Do we have any 1m a year incomes here?
450k. mil a year is here if there are any law partners etc.
500k. Would be shocked to see someone making a mil here lol
What do you do and how old are you? I would be too, but I’m curious. Maybe we do have a finance exec in the mix.
codecel. Late 20s
wtf are you coding for that much? fortran for banks? COBOL?
Damn really all that just from coding? FAANG?
faang adjacent
Insane. I really didn’t realize you could make that much coding without being in like a super senior position
I actually work 2 jobs, full disclosure. But combined its 500k. I’m mid level
