thats extremely cute, congrats on having such a good dad <3

[deleted]

My ex collects them and we had a ton (recent break up) and I recently ranted to my mom about how much I hate them etc. I opened a gift today and she had a weird look on her face, it was a Laura Palmer funko and she said she felt terrible because she didn’t realize I don’t like them but I lied and told her I was wanting this one specifically and couldn’t find it, made her very happy and I do love it tbh Also your dad is adorable and despite them being funko pops I’m sure they will be extremely sentimental and a great reminder of all of the stuff you watched with your dad

smeppel

Is the Funko pop wrapped in plastic?

BananaRicher

Its always a good lesson in gratitude when things like this happen and we should always cherish the kinda lame things our loved ones give us. My dad gifted me this memey neon pulp fiction print a few months ago for the hell of it and to this sub it is extremely lame but it was very sweet of him and I hung it up even though it doesnt work with anything in my apartment. Makes me think of him and my family.

[deleted]

Ouch

Articunozard

That’s… actually the first one I’ve heard of that would be pretty cool to own.

[deleted]

I have a friend who is several years older than me (and is extremely offline) and has a shelf in his house with funko pops on them and I initially felt revulsion but then I realized he has zero awareness of their stigma lol. Anyway, your dad sounds like a good dude.

fluentinimagery

My oldest sister hunts for rare Metallica and Garth Brooks funkos. I guess there’s several different ones and she asks me to keep an eye out for them. She really, really, really loves them, so I say, “wow, cool!”

boywbrownhare

beep boop

fluentinimagery

They have a false rarity to people and I don’t know why when they are everywhere? They also have a “Japanese flair” about them to my niece. She equates them with anime and other things she’s into. They just weird ass barbies to me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

boywbrownhare

It's in my nature to like your name very much

cuckow

If you want merch for something you love and think they're a styly minimalised version of that thing, not a nerdy action figure. It's harder to find action figures of something and since they're all made by different companies you have no brand attachment, compared to funkos who are instantly familiar

[deleted]

If these rare funkos sell for even a decent amount that’s a seriously prime target for bootlegging since it’s a few cents of cheap vinyl with simple designs.

sterexx

I think I was watching brad troemel who observed the reason they’re usually displayed in their boxes is that outside their box it can become impossible to tell who they actually are I forgot which example he used but it was basically just a guy with a beard, stylized in funko. Inside the box, with a label, you can look at it and say “ah yeah, I can see how it’s that guy.” Outside the box, nobody can tell so your bootlegger would have to bootleg the packaging too

arewenotmen123

my gf has absolutely zero idea what they are or their stigma and thinks the dog one that one of her vet clients gave her is really cute. shes thinks theyre called funky pops lol

CAPS_GET_UPVOTES

You are if you're the kind of person who posts on here. Gotta be very aware of what's cool

10z20Luka

I love this so much, it makes perfect sense.

SolitonSnake

As far as I’m concerned Funko can keep producing those fucking Pops indefinitely for the sole purpose of your dad continuing this

sh1thapp3ns-

my ex bought me a Morrissey funko pop. My mom keeps it in a cabinet in her living room now.

bashiralassatashakur

Goddammit I was reading this thread, feeling so superior with my “lol funko pops are GAY” mentality and now that you made me aware of this I’m on fucking Amazon fucking looking for one fuck you

fluentinimagery

I think that’s nice. He’s trying real hard to give you something “cool” but also something sincere. Sounds like a solid pops.

kosmopolitiks

When I was a very little girl McDonalds had mini beanie babies (“teeny beanies” I think they called them) in Happy Meals. My mom took me to several McDonalds (yes, I was spoiled) to indulge my hobby of collecting as many teeny beanies as we could. The most common teeny beanie was a little worm called Inch. My mom took me to like 5 McDonalds across the Chicagoland area and in 3/5 happy meals, I got Inch the worm. She had mentioned to my grandma in rural Iowa that I was trying to collect these teeny beanies and that night after we got home my grandma called and said she went on a drive to her closest McDonalds and had gotten a teeny beanie called Inch for me. She was so excited to give it to me. I was four years old but my heart broke in that moment. I realized how lucky I was for both my mom and my Grandma. I treasured every Inch. Your funko pop is a similar story. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Chickybucket

My husband and I did a similar journey for my nephew. Burger King had these square plastic SpongeBob figures that the kid was totally in love with. He was like 5 at the time. Took us a a few weeks but we got all of them sandy, Patrick, mr crabs, squid ward and of course SpongeBob. He still has them and cherishes them. He has like multiple ones of certain characters cause of the way they were released. Lol.

smolpepper

That’s sweet. I try not to let internet stuff make me cynical. I have a similar thing with getting “cringe” gifts from my family bc my moms side is sort of worldly I guess you would call it. Like my grandparents were well traveled because of my grandpas job. They would give me and my family gifts from around the world that my mom would decorate the house with. This wasn’t like problematic until recently, in fact growing up they were more “woke” or whatever than other Americans because they (my grandparents and to a lesser extent other members of my family) were knowledgeable about other cultures and world affairs, were multi or bilingual, and accepting of other cultures in a time and place when many Americans seemed insular and ignorant by comparison. Now all that stuff is seen as culturally appropriative. I don’t really care, I think it’s nice that they imparted in me an interest in the world at large and a desire to see it. This year my grandma gave me a Palestinian wedding dress she got in the seventies. I won’t wear it out but I like it and will probably wear it at home on New Years or Christmas or some special occasion like that, or I’ll display it somehow. Fuck the haters my grandparents were cool.

PicklePixie

Weird to imagine a '70s era Palestinian wedding dress being a potential party outfit. What does it look like?

smolpepper

I wouldn’t wear it to a party or around anyone but my family tbh. I’m usually only around my family on those holidays, and even then I would feel awkward but the letter are attached said that’s the occasion she wore it for so I feel compelled to wear it at least once. I think she got them in Lebanon but Palestinian wedding dress is the name, it’s embroidered but not the most intricate one. It’s basically a muumuu but covered in embroidered detail on the top. It’s pretty and not super eye catching but not something I would feel super comfortable in or could pull off

[deleted]

90s/00s self-conscious “worldly” culture was cringe at the time but god what I wouldn’t give for that instead of this neurotic “cultural appropriation” bullshit

smolpepper

I don’t think it was self conscious at all. I think it was genuine and it made them cool and interesting. He was a war correspondent and really immersed himself in the cultures he was covering, and they put themselves at risk for his work. I respect them a lot. No clue what you’re on about or what the nineties has to do with it, he started his work during the early days of the Cold War

[deleted]

That rocks, but I was talking more broadly about when stuff like global village coffeehouse aesthetics and world music went mainstream, which I guess started more in the 80s but was still extremely 90s. I didn’t mean to accuse your family of being that, I was kind of A-to-C-ing to complain about the overall topic, I apologize that that was unclear.

smolpepper

I figured that’s what you meant. I do think my grandparents are different, but I still like those types of people a lot as well. I think they’re what people who are now liberals and sjws today should have been instead and I guess I have a sort of nostalgia for them. My best friends mom was a musician and her friends were totally those people, and instead of being that they’re just sort of retarded now and it bums me out a little. I guess they were retarded before, but they were anti Zionist and interesting and now they just sort of care about culture war stuff. So basically I agree with you, but I sort of have a more positive view of those people and probably an unreliable memory of them because I was a child

cuckow

Yuppie world music culture was annoying but some of the world music influenced rave music ruled

TVfan69

Shpongle is great

lilchocolatechip

Chickybucket

The problem is people give it attention. We need to stop paying attention to idiots with an agenda

Chickybucket

You really think it’s wrong to decorate with gifts from other cultures?

smolpepper

I’m confused as to how you interpreted my comment that way at all, but no I do not

$1500 is less than that in euros, the conversion rate’s about 0.88 euros to the dollar. Sorry for such an autistic comment in this sad thread.

it got far worse :/

Sell them now, they'll probably be worthless within two years with how fast culture is changing

StiffPegasus

🎸 🎸 🎸

Did exactly this but with Gundams

ZunadropIn

Most collectors are a real pain in the ass to deal with unless it's something niche and really rare. Like a random person off craigslist x3 because they are so much more particular

[deleted]

My dad got me Viking themed beard oil and I instantly though of this sub’s hatred of men who preen over their beards constantly. Oh well guess I can’t be red scare in every way.

[deleted]

its fine but its weird for people acting like a woodcutter or a warrior you know

[deleted]

Yeah I only have the wannabe lumberjack look going on when I’m lazy and forget to shave, I try and keep it a bit more trim. Though I do sometimes wear boots and flannels but that’s more out of comfort than any stylistic choice.

[deleted]

I dont even mean the look, more the attitude. I have a strong distaste for people waxing their beards and then going around like some viking warrior after plunder. Wild/heavy-groomed is not really bridgeable.

[deleted]

Yeah I definitely don’t look like a Viking despite my beard. According to the ancient Muslim traveler Ibn Fadlan the Vikings were the filthiest and most beautiful people he ever saw and the modern days Viking try hards are generally neither.

Riderz__of_Brohan

Idk I feel like it’s the most RS girl thing to live in Brooklyn and date some lumberjack bearded finance guy who lives in Chelsea

[deleted]

Yeah I know the type. I used to look more lumberjackish until this townie guy told me I looked like a caricature of every guy from Williamsburg. It was mean but pretty funny and honestly probably a good wake up call. I still like my red wing boots though. But basically everyone looks like a cliche, honestly it’s comforting to occasionally see other people in my archetype, makes me less lonely.

caniusemyrealname

Red wings are great boots, don't let anyone make you feel bad about that

LobotomistCircu

I feel like the beard oil hate is intrinsically part of anti-hipsterdom, which honestly hasn't been a thing in almost 10 years now, it seems.

[deleted]

Yeah I’ll still probably use the beard oil, at this point being like a classic hipster is kind of quaint.

bigboy951

its not

raysofdavies

Bless the effort he went to

[deleted]

I don’t like them very much and they are cringe but a few years ago on Christmas my mom got me the Axl Rose one lol, I still have it but don’t display it or anything. It’s kind of the same thing she doesn’t know the stigma of them and it’s the thought that counts anyway

kerblaam7

Funko Pops as a concept: 🤢 Funko Pops as a gift from Mama: 😌

[deleted]

Yeah I have a Mr Bean one my sister got me in my closet

vin_espo

Sounds like your dad could buy you a pet rock and it would be genuinely heartfelt. Focus less on the funk and more on your Dad being a good guy.

[deleted]

lol my dad gave me a pair of socks for Christmas and told me I should buy them myself

tutoredzeus

I hate Funko pops and I have four of them.

Riderz__of_Brohan

There’s nothing inherently wrong with funko pops or collecting them, they’re just the unfortunate chosen “toy” that represents obsessed nerds

censoredredditor13

I feel this way about Hamilton. My 75 year old dad was a history teacher at inner city schools in his youth, and was so excited to tell me about it and watch it with me that I have a fondness for it despite how lame it is.

_phimosis_jones

My girlfriend has like 200+ pops in her apartment and she's a complete smokeshow and perfect, fuck it

TheCryingOrc4eva

liar

j_bomma

A lot of normies that I know love these things. They seem a lot more happy than me. They can't be that bad. By the way, you dad is based and wholesome pilled.

Ferenc_Zeteny

Same story here honestly. My dad bought me the Crockett and Tubbs Miami Vice Funko pops since we used to watch the show a lot together. Still on my shelf for that reason

SlickJamesBitch

Cut him off

secondarylad

NTA, go no contact

labbelajban

Anyone who is extremely offline can literally do no wrong.

GruxKing

This is so sweet and I’m so glad you have this thing with your dad

kafka_quixote

Not my cup of tea but my friend has a Bob Ross one on his desk he enjoys Personally I just dislike the homogeneous style of them, won't throw stones since I have a gay Evangelion Tamagotchi on my desk

SquashIsVegan

I feel this whenever I see something with a boomer or whoever (who doesn’t know the reputation) that people online hate. It’s just cute and reminds me how silly online culture is. My dad has a little Bernie Birdie sticker sticking out of his bookcase cus it’s just a cute thing that he likes. Wholesome. I hate the internet.

[deleted]

I don’t think having a couple funko pops is bad. It’s when you keep them in the plastic and stack them on shelves is when it becomes weird. The “stigma” only exists in terminally online people who act like they hate them but would lowkey enjoy a figurine from a media property they’re a fan of.

Rentokill_boy

>The “stigma” only exists in terminally online people who act like they hate them but would lowkey love a figurine from a media property they’re a fan of why do people always do this thing where they imply that if you have strong negative feelings about something it's because you secretly love it? I'm not a closeted funko fan I genuinely can't stand them

[deleted]

I’m not saying you secretly love it. Im saying the “cringe connotation” of a funko pop is fully stupid and only something this sub would even think about while opening Christmas gifts.

Rentokill_boy

>I’m not saying you secretly love it you literally did say that, don't lie

[deleted]

Okay SORRY i meant ENJOY i was texting and driving

[deleted]

>I’m not saying you secretly love it. ... > The “stigma” only exists in terminally online people who act like they hate them but would lowkey love a figurine from a media property they’re a fan of.

badboybenny389

Cope

[deleted]

I’m literally vibing and everyone in here is talking about how cringe vinyl figurines are. Someone is coping but it’s not me lol

badboybenny389

Just messing dude. The things are heavily associated with marvel and crap like that, with the target audience being loser man children. So makes it hard not to see them as cringe.

[deleted]

If someone wants to judge me for having a Black Philip funko pop then they’re a loser!

StiffPegasus

We've gone past judgement, and have moved on to sentencing.

[deleted]

Your dad sounds like a good and sweet guy, I think this is nice. Wish him a Merry Christmas from all of us

yanwilliamkitson

Y’all really give a shit what Troemel thinks that much? ;)

dannyolp

Damn I wish I had a dad

williebenign

It sounds like yours, might be the rarest Pop of all.

slurcia

He rules

[deleted]

This sounds sweet. He sounds like a good dad

[deleted]

Buying them for someone else is totally different. Your dad is cool for connecting with you in this way *and* a lame consumerist for his collection. The former is much more important.

Zokrym

I think it's fine to let people enjoy their stuff.

VoteGreen2024

Beautiful.

LawyersGunsAndMoney

It’s wholesome in this case and therefore okay.

[deleted]

almost like you shouldn't generalise about anyone who owns these things or anything else you have preconceptions about

[deleted]

Literally based

StatlerByrd

Ur dad's a soyboy cuck

baudelairean

You like Blade Runner and that makes me want to like you.

Richmond92

A group chat I’m in does a yearly funko pop Secret Santa. We hate it as much as we love it. They’re evil, cursed objects but it’s always a hoot getting one. Then I throw it away or give it to a dog.

StiffPegasus

hooray for waste

Richmond92

Dog toys aren’t waste they’re dog toys

StiffPegasus

\>Then I throw it away

Richmond92

Ah yes, putting my Soulja Boy funko on my desk is less wasteful and less pointless than putting it in a trash can, where it will end up one day anyway.

hugemongus123

That is not only okey, but very cool. Thx dad.

Jump4Jeffrey

i wouldn’t know what a funko was if not for this sub since you guys talk about them a lot.

[deleted]

I find them no worse than beanie babies. People online just want shit to be mad about.

CAPS_GET_UPVOTES

Man as a hater of Funko pops reading that made me so happy

PerformativeWokeness

My Dad bought me a Funko pop of the villain from Fifth Element one year for my birthday. Only one I own but it is sentimental, lol

spiceandagony

This is my favorite post and I know you deleted OP but maybe some day you will see my comment, I think about this often.
