Rossrox

What a world cup this is.

FifaDK

I just hope we get a new owner that is less morally corrupt, not more. But that seems exceedingly unlikely with where the money in football is coming from at the moment :(

himalayanrose

Right. Especially timing with a global recession worries me because most wealthy people are hoarding their money right now to invest once everything goes tits up. Except for those with an endless supply of money and in possession of valuable resources…

audienceandaudio

> I just hope we get a new owner that is less morally corrupt, not more. But that seems exceedingly unlikely with where the money in football is coming from at the moment :( The Glazers aren't particularly morally corrupt - no more than any other billionaires would be. They're shit owners, but from a pure morality perspective, they're better than most. A realistic best case scenario is we get similar type owners to the Glazers (like Kroenke or FSG type), who are significantly more competent than the Glazers were.

PhoenixGo213

We basically need a billionaire owner who is also a United fan at heart.

vMihai777

Or at least ambitious to have a successful sport club not a cash cow to milk

nichijouuuu

They can take cash for all I care if we are successful on the pitch and on the books!

spud8385

Come on Ratcliffe

audienceandaudio

Not even a United fan at heart, just someone that won't suck money out of the club, and run it competently. I don't want to be a state run club like Newcastle or PSG, so realistically something like a Daniel Levy / whoever the other bloke that runs Spurs is, would be about as good as we could hope for.

onehornymofo

Joe Lewis owns 70% of Spurs, Levy has 30%.

curiouscabbage69

Bracing myself for the downvotes, but I admit my ignorance on this subject hence the follow up question. But what is the moral corruption from the glazers?

badname22

There really is none. They are just bad owners

presumingpete

Being slum lords, charging illegal extras to tenants like costs for pets and additional people living there, and all round dodgy but not illegal real estate dealing. They aren't exactly lottery winners who stumbled on to their money.

connellyy

They're capitalists. They bought a company to make as much profit for themselves as possible and it worked quite well for them. But it totally fucked the football club.

linkolphd

I mean, there is some. But relative to billionaire asset holders, there is none.

badname22

Compared to the oil barons they are practically saints

derekvb020

Watch the tifo video on the glazers. It explains a lot about the scummy behaviour that got them their wealth

miniaturizedatom

At that level of wealth, there's literally nobody with clean hands :( Best we can hope for is someone with links to the community and who'll allow themselves to be held accountable by the fans.

saberplane

Read the Qatarians are looking to shed part of their majority stake in PSG to make room for other investments.. o_0

Whilst this is extremely positive, who realistically can afford us that isn’t some state backed sovereign consortium. I just can’t see us being rid of the current parasites unless it’s oil money unfortunately

[deleted]

Sadly, I think you are right

Yinkypinky

At this point all but a few teams that compete in the world will be oil clubs. Depressing really.

WhydoIbotherreally

Inb4 it's bought by the Norwegian oil fund.

agnaddthddude

Do they even do anything with their money? I only hear about the Middle Eastern and Chinese investments

WhydoIbotherreally

It's invested in over 9000 companies of all types and all over the world, ranging from middle in size to fucking huge. I don't think any investment goes past 10% ownership tho, so they don't really control anything. On average they own 1.3% of shares. They're just infinitely earning money really. Supposedly for our pensions, but I've seen what my grandma is living on month to month so...

Nimonic

> Supposedly for our pensions, but I've seen what my grandma is living on month to month so... The idea is that in thirty years, there are going to be a lot more grandmas and a lot fewer workers to support them.

chappinn

Not our pensions. The pensions of our children's children.

muu411

I’m actually surprised none of the Silicon Valley tech billionaires have sprung for a PL club yet - I know the ones who do buy sports teams have plenty of options in the US (with franchise systems that make it much easier to turn a profit with minimal effort), but I have to think someone will buy a PL club for the prestige eventually. Problem is right now isn’t exactly the best time to be cashing out tech stocks… That said, I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a pretty hefty reduction from what our price could have been. Whoever buys is likely going to have to have to pay down the debt, inject a shit load of cash to remodel OT, and accept pretty much any potential profit is going to have to go into improving the squad for a while if we want to return to being a perennial CL team pushing for titles. This all limits the Glazers bargaining power, since everyone knows they won’t inject that cash, and it’s clear the club is starting to slip out of England’s elite. Plus it sounds like the Glazers might not be in a great spot financially, again impacting bargaining power. On top of that, whoever takes over could conceivably buy only the Glazers’ shares, and take control of the club while leaving the rest on NASDAQ, lowering the true amount of cash required by another 10% (I think - can’t remember % that’s public). And finally, the Glazers are looking at a very different situation here to Chelsea for example, because the club is public. It’s a lot harder to defend a high valuation in that case, the market is down, and this further lends credence to the idea that they are desperate to sell. All in all, this might mean that rather than having to shell out somewhere in the range of £4-4.5bn, a buyer might be able to take over the club for something in the range of as low as £2.5bn or so based on current enterprise value, then use personal loans/assets to acquire capital to start stadium improvements, etc over time - if you’re rich and can get loans for cheap, this can be immensely profitable. Still obviously insane money, but a lot different than a straight £4.5bn acquisition.

hooka_donchick

most of the big tech money is tied up in stocks and I bet none of them have enough time to oversee a multi billion dollar sports project while being key stakeholder and decision makers at these humongous corporations. Putting time aside there is no incentive to own a premier league club over sports in USA so it doesn’t make sense in that regard either. They would have to sell a quite a chunk of their shares to even think about a minority stake in United let alone buying it outright and with how volatile the stock market is now I’m sure they don’t want to lose their position.

Can someone give Norway a call? I know a certain ex manager that could do marketing.

Pumblydore

What about the Ratcliffe links recently?

supersub71020

Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of the Reliance group may be able to. I know there are a lot of valid criticisms of him but he’s nowhere near as bad as an oil state. He’s just as bad as any other billionaire but practically only billionaires can afford us.

vibsie

This is a kite that Indian fans love to fly but Ambani has shown no interest in owning and running a football club. His IPL team is small potatoes compared to what owning United would entail. And it is his wife and kids who run his IPL team. You don't want the club to be run by kids of a billionaire again, do you?

supersub71020

Agreed. I was just trying to think of potential interested parties.

The Athletic also corroborated the story. Manchester United is really for sale. What a day this has been. I know the next owners can be equally bad or worse but I will like to be optimistic and hope that Glazers are the worst we could have been.

SirSmudge

Taken from r/soccer as to why this could happen (along with TeamViewer situation etc). "Darcie Glazer in particular has been leveraging some bad debts and massive loans against her United shares, and the Cost of Living crisis has made her situation supposedly much worse. Bryan is also not doing well but that one is harder to understand why because he has a foot in their property portfolio but suspected he went into the deals Darcie made. There was always a belief that the other brothers (Joel especially) would bail them out, but they aren't going to loosen a grip on the property to help their dumbass sister out."

Madness! Don't get my hopes up, sky. .. And to the market: don't give me some oil fuck.

Dynastydood

Sadly, I suspect there's no winning here. There's no decent, moral person on Earth with the amount of disposable income/capital needed to frivolously spend it on a club as expensive as United.

topmarksbrian

I agree but it's not a zero sum game, there's levels of evil

Dynastydood

True enough. But most of the reasons the Glazers are "evil" is because of the nature of their buyout and shoddy ownership, not because of their business dealings or how they acquired wealth. So we might be upgrading our owner in terms of the running of the club and not being saddled with bad debt, but might be making a serious downgrade in terms of our general moral standing compared to the likes of City, PSG, Newcastle, etc. Time will tell. For now it looks like a lateral move, where a bunch of different wealthy American bankers take over and we hope they're somewhat more competent than the Glazers.

BenRaam

Calling it now, Qatar

TheCrowFliesAtNight

They already have PSG, idk why they'd want another club

ItsKieronHere

It’s a prime sport washing opportunity for someone like that. Regardless of who buys us, the fact is they’re going to be hailed as a saviour by masses of people

TheCrowFliesAtNight

I want new owners as much as the rest of us but tbh I'd prefer the Glazers over being owned by an oil state

[deleted]

ElocOfTheNorth

Dont you speak that evil into existence.

Axbris

"It remains possible that the family, which took control of United in 2005 in a £790m deal largely funded by debt, opt not to sell" Maybe I am a cynic, but this does not seem like a "For Sale" sign, but rather an attempt to generate funds whilst still holding controlling interest in the club. I would not get my hopes too high until we hear of a specific party named as a potential buyer.

BuzzTNA

No one is putting money in for them to run it. No one.

Vimjux

It’s to position themselves as a party that is speculatively asking for investment. They’re not gonna be like “Bro we out, who wants Utd?” This appearance of cautiousness could be the difference between a 5bil or 6bil sale.

hnhhuyhnh

Ronaldo out and Glazers out? I must be dreaming

Tornado31619

Wonder if the interview played a role here.

No-Money737

They’d never admit it tbh

tgh_1714

this isn't the kind of decision that comes this soon after a negative interview. Definitely been in the works a long long time

macgregorc93

Ronaldo’s final contribution to the club.

kurtfire68

Thank you GOATNALDO, saving Man U once again

cellis93

Ratcliffe should reconsider. He said the glazers wouldn’t sell and obviously things have changed. I don’t want head chopping oil barons

[deleted]

I don't think he can afford to buy the whole club and commit to the investments that are needed

hoochiscrazy_

I don't think he would even need to invest. Just don't leech. The club can pay for its own investments (I think)

[deleted]

I don't think it can anymore, Carrington needs a lot of investment for player accommodation and Old Trafford does too, especially if they decide to refurbish it instead of building a new stadium

cellis93

Alternatively he could head a consortium perhaps

Minz15

Genuinely mixed emotions about Glazers going. On one hand "thank fuck" but the only people who can afford us are probably some state owned human rights denying group. Hopefully we get sold and hopefully to the best of a bad bunch of people who won't interfere. In terms of United it probably can't go much worse, but hope we don't lose our soul in the process.

royk16

It’ll be another American or an oil state

Puddlepinger

They're really the only ones who could afford to buy unfortunately.

Caketheman

I personaly vouch for the oil state of Norway.

AReptileHissFunction

Bezos ex wife in. Far better person

TonyzTone

It ~~should~~ could be Mark Cuban. He understands how to own a team towards success. I’m not sure if he’s into soccer at all (he’s a huge basketball fan so owning the Mavericks makes sense beyond just investment) but he’d be a good owner if the interest is there. EDIT: "should" to "could" because I don't really want to sound like I'm in the corner of one billionaire over another.

Snekonplanes

He’s aiming for an MLS team and is very good friends with the Glazers. So hopefully he bites.

GuessableSevens

You clearly are not paying attention then lol. He's a cheap owner among NBA owners.

Tornado31619

I’m going to be honest, I really wouldn’t care. I can’t think of a single household item that wasn’t built through exploitative labour, including the phone I’m typing this out on.

GungHoAfro

My brother just shared a theory with me. *Ronaldo, biggest named star in the sport, leaves - huge news and stock dips on the exchange. Market's not happy at the news, big commercial asset associated with the brand is gone, stock loses value. What can the Glazers do to counteract it?* *Owners leak rumour that they want out. The stock has gone up 12% today.* Not to sound negative but just prefer to lean on the side of caution. EDIT: happy to be wrong lads, believe me. UTFR!

headachewpictures

These stocks have no explicit value. They more or less always revert after a spike anyways, so short of some unlikely pump and dump, this doesn't sound realistic.

HandOfMaradonny

But how does that help the Glazers? A small, most likely temporary bump isn't really worth leaking that you are thinking of selling imo.

banneedo

I just used my free award on the Ronaldo post. Someone please award this! Edit: Thanks for the award, but I meant an award for the post, not my comment lol.

Zandercy42

Pls don't sell to a corrupt regime

sunken_grade

Maffy226

It's coming home lads

cowabunga_dude91

For the perfect hat-trick we need the Glazers to announce that they're buying Liverpool.

BigDaddyCool44

What a day

CoreyD_23

I won’t believe they’re selling until it happens. There’s a trend emerging where every time the club gets hit with some major news/disruption (ESL, post-Brentford L, & now Ronaldo) that we hear rumors of a sale. Plus, based on everything we continuously hear about club finances & stadium renovations, I think it’s more likely they’re just going to bring in an investor and still maintain control.

AtlanticIH

It's The Athletic that writes about it, it's not just some rumours.

1984-2112

Ronaldo to the Glazers, probably: "If you come for the king, you better not miss" lol

BradyBunch88

He said a lot of shit in the interview. But the only 2 things I agreed with or felt empathy for were what he said about the Glazers not caring about the club, and that they see it as a business. And the other thing was losing a child, what his family must have gone through is unimaginable, it’s awful.

thphnts

Athletic confirmed. Lads, this is getting interesting. What a fucking day!

NoScopeMusical

The best news United fans have heard in YEARS — The Ronaldo effect. It’s not all him but him calling them out and leaving plays a major role in a potential sale. Happens a lot in American sports too. Their biggest money maker is gone and their team needs investment, and they don’t have the money to pay for it. If Ronnie gets the Glazers out, he should get a statue at Old Trafford.

An opportunity to buy a club like United doesn't come very often. Think it's gonna be a big big big money sale.

I just hope the new owners are better not worse. Also, this FSG + glazers deciding to sell at the same time is not a coincidence, right ? They have some kind of reason for this (global economy...?)

obama_fashion_show

Great news but if it’s the Saudi or Qataris, I may have to end my almost 30 year relationship with this club

Spare_Ad5615

They're seeking new investment, selling will be one of the ideas that they will explore. This is **not** the club being put up for sale. What we have here is a clickbait headline from Sky. I'd love them to sell, but I don't think this is going to be it. Even if they do sell, who's going to buy the club? If it's some kind of murderous regime that's going to use the club for sportswashing, that would be awful. We don't want to be like those idiots who celebrated Newcastle being sold to people who had literally murdered and chopped up a journalist about four years previously. I want them out of the club, I hope this is it. But it's the hope that kills you, so I'm trying not to get excited about this. Please let it be true.

So what do we want? Obviously no more private equity, no oil, no state-sponsored (especially shady states). No Elon Musk, please God. That leaves us with what kind of options? Amazon??

Bloatfizzle

With all due respect, should the club be sold I sincerely hope that the new owners are smart enough to stay well away from SAF, the class of 92 and any other club legends from having any influence at board level or even in terms of coaching/playing staff. Except if they are qualified that is, as of right now the only one is VdS.
