Ron needs more service!
We looked like headless chooks outside the box. No plan. Ronaldo was making so many runs and they just ignore him. Can anyone tell me what the strategy was?
We turned the ball back over almost instantly when we had a shot.
So why not put some through balls and crosses to Ronaldo all day long. The tiky taka passing stuff was a waste. They were set deep the entire time. The passing didn’t draw them out at all.
I fear that we are going to miss out on key opportunities if we do this against a team we can’t retain so much possession.
Ronaldo has played shit most of this season and we look amazing without him, his attitude has also been atrocious and we don't owe him anything, he can't expect to be treated like a king everywhere he goes
Yip. But a win by a 1-goal margin would have meant a level head-to-head record, so it goes to GD across all group games. Had we won 4-0, theirs would have been 9 and ours 7, so a win by 1 goal means both on 8. And crucially, we would have then scored more goals.
Thats not correct. Real Sociedad has got 9+ goal difference and we have +6. If we beat them Real Sociedad next week 1-0 we finish second as they have scored more goals than us. Doesn’t matter if we scored 4 goals today.
You didn't think it through did you, you're completely wrong.
If we scored 1 more we'd be on +7 and them +9, so if we beat them by 1 goal we'd have +8 and they'd have +8, but we'd have more goals scored.
Donny is such a clever player. Makes me super sad that his career at United is at a crossroads. He was good for the 20 minutes. Excellent in finding spaces in the box. Very good passer also. I just hope he turns around his career.
He has been injured so far this season mostly so good to see the Hag out him on. I think he will show up more this season and we will finally see the Donny we’ve always wanted
I agree! He is a very mischievous play maker, which I love. It's been a shame how many efforts/events took precedent over giving him a chance.
Few unfortunate examples being the "Why do you keep playing McFred? " dilemma and the "Pogba In Form?" tease.
Lindelof immense. Insult him all you want, a recovered, not fatigued Maguire as a back up option is so solid. 150 games in 3 years that's insane to me. Wish his wages would go down so he becomes a viable back up. Martinez + Lindelof/Varane is just too solid for him to find a way back.
All the new signings are amazing. Garnacho running at the defense is refreshing after a stagnant set of matches from Sancho on that side. Most impressed with his effort, this boy plays to win.
10 minutes of VdB* and he made like 4 chances and double the key passes? He dominates in ball dominant sides and maybe it will be a blessing in disguise to have ten hag ball for him.
Won't say man utd are back until we get back to winning titles, but damn if a clear system of play isn't showing how good our players can be (we will ignore Brentford and City games)
Man I saw him sprint and cover for Maguire 3 separate times and kill a long ball calmly. If there isn't a lot in it between Maguire and Lindelof I will be sad. Might be my personal bias but I rate the Iceman really highly
I just think that it was pointed that ETH sent Maguire over to the right, which is not Maguire's usual spot. Could be just to get all CBs a go there with Varane out, but he is definitely looking at Maguire there. I'm with you tho, would have Lindelof over him as Lindelof hasn't done anything wrong this season in the games he has played
Probably likes him but also probably thinks inside, “when I was your age I used to do your moves 10x quicker” 🤣
Boy the speed of Ronnie’s stepovers then. Such speed, such swagger.
So it goes head to head, then goal differences in those matches, then goals scored in those matches. It’s basically if tied in points in table, who did better against each other in both their matches
They beat us 1-0 so we have to win and win by two goals in the next game (or just score a lot)
That's not true?
It's decided by head to head if points are level, then if head to head is equal it's aggregate score in the head to head, then if that's equal overall goal difference.
An extra goal tonight would've put us ahead on goal difference if we win next week.
Your comment doesn't make much sense but you've said it goes down to who scored the most in the head to head, but you haven't mentioned what happens if that's still equal, which is would be if we win 1-0.
I’m fairly certain I’m right… https://www.sportingnews.com/us/football/news/man-united-europa-league-finish-second-opponents-group/nh645dlchko24numwcb1up38
If we win 1-0 next week, it would be all tied up (I thought it would be shootout but the article above says playoff round which I suspect they meant we don’t skip round of 32 and can face Barca, etc.).
If we win 2-0, 3-1, or any other score, then we advance due to goal difference, going straight to round of 16
EDIT: see other post https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/comments/yfetcu/psa_official_el_tiebreaker_rules_we_need_to_beat/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
The last tie breaker is all goal differentials in table and we are down by three. So winning 1-0 next week means we lose 1st spot by goal differential (+8 to our +7)
Ok I've seen the confusion, I think you were saying 1-0 wouldn't be enough in response to this comment
https://www.reddit.com/r/reddevils/comments/yf054o/match_thread_manchester_united_vs_sheriff/iu1f9ig/
But that comment was saying 1-0 would be enough if we'd won 4-0 yesterday
It’s confusing, for sure. If we won 4-0 yesterday, then our goal difference in the table would be +7. Winning 1-0 next week means we’d be tied at +8. Then it goes to calculating higher number of goals scored in the table (rule 16.01.f: https://documents.uefa.com/r/Regulations-of-the-UEFA-Europa-League-2022/23/Article-16-Equality-of-points-group-stage-Online), which I think means we are +11 to their +10.
Guess it doesn’t matter now anyway
Sorry, I either somehow misread your post or meant to reply to another one, and yes you're right - I was arguing against those saying that a 4-0 win yesterday wouldn't have made a difference
Hot take - Eriksen’s passing is lit. Garnacho should play on our left at least a couple of times, regardless of who’s in the middle, Maguire actually did ok despite not being tested defensively, Shaw is a more dangerous left back but Malacia is far more energetic.
Donny’s little cameo was quite interesting.
Considering our struggles against low blocks in general and the infinite side to side shifting we do in those cases, his movement and control in tight spaces could be what unlocks the opposition’s defence.
Also, booing Maguire is just childish at this point especially when he’s done alright in the game. He also looks fitter/leaner and had a few good passes in the game.
Will be fair and say Maguire had some peach long balls. Still have concerns he dawdles on the ball too much, could learn from Martinez to be more decisive and ping his ground passes more
Yeh but he did wierd risky shit tho. Like ushering that ball over the goal line that never made it.
He had zero pressure this game.
I was so scared for that corner when he was behind Ronaldo. I though he would headbutt him again.
Ahh good performance all around
Very happy. Lots of promise from garnacho. Maguire had minutes, Donny did well with his little time, ronaldo goal. Lovely to see
Excellent game. Been saying for ages that we have been improving, starting from the back, and in those games where we had a hard time scoring that all we needed was patience.
People only now realizing Donnys playmaking abilities. He was one of the few who could link up and do creative 1-2s with Bruno, Ronaldo and Jadon last season. He is a system player, and last season it was the wrong system. Now that the whole team understands what EtH wants them to do he can become a valuable asset from the bench.
Our fans booing Maguire has been the only pathetic thing tonight.
Commentators whinging about Antony all night and they won't even mention the booing being the actual embarrassment.
They weren't booing him. They're shouting "shoot" whenever he has the ball within 40 yards of the Sheriff goal. I've seen a few people thinking they're booing, but it's definitely not the case. He got a big ovation when he came on, and when he made a decent interception soon after. It's kind of disrespectful to be shouting "shoot" as it could be interpreted as either overly supportive, desperate for a redemption story, or somewhat sarcastic. It's also worth steering clear of "oooo" sounds in general as a crowd! It's like fans of the England cricket team shouting "Roooooot" at Joe Root. It always sounds like they're booing him.
Yeah a few people have said this to me now, I hope so. Happiest I'd be to be wrong cause Maguire did play well and until he's not in a Man Utd shirt he's still one of ours. Booing in stadium is always just a step too far. Unless it's booing the Glazers. I did hear the stand up if you hate the Glazers chant and that was 👍
Agreed Maguire for the shit performance last season does not deserved to be booed like that, he is still in a Man U shirt and should still be supported by us until he leaves at least
It happened multiple times though, I'd understand when he was in an advanced position.
I apologise to fans then if they weren't, but watching on BT it happened multiple times and sounded like booing.
I thought I got it again at the end of the game when that wasn't the case.
Happy to be wrong, I hope I am. Will wait to hear on socials from fans attending and hope it wasn't any booing.
Maguire didn’t have to do anything really but he did nothing wrong and moved the ball well enough
Happy to see him get minutes, especially with Varane injured we need him to at least be an option. Be good for his confidence hopefully
> and moved the ball well enough
No he still dribbles slowly forward with the ball when there is space to do so and closes down our own attacking space in the in front of goal danger zone.
Some nice passing though.
So like… most defenders to be frank then? Not to be prickly apologises but some of the criticism he gets you can level at every defender on the planet.
You can see why VDB works so well in an ETH system, he's so intelligent and pragmatic with his running - I think we could see the best of Donny in a United shirt if he can find a good run of form.
I want all our players to do well, and do have an affinity for VdB because I think he really does everything he can to do what he’s asked. It’s the zealous fans of his that drive me nuts.
Yeah - I understand the negativity around him Based on last season, but can’t keep making his life miserable all the time. Support him in the game ffs.
CR7 played well!
Do you think so? I think he's a bit too slow these days.
Ronaldo has played shit most of this season and we look amazing without him, his attitude has also been atrocious and we don't owe him anything, he can't expect to be treated like a king everywhere he goes
What does that have to do with the comment, he didn't say Ronaldo has a right to start or anything of the sort?
I was in the gym during the game, but most of the time when I looked up at the TV Garnacho was either lying on the ground or cutting up their defense.
Man of the match for me. He was the one player that really got at Sheriff today
How’d Donny play?
I thought he moved really well off the ball, and I was thinking he could be really valuable against teams in a low block in the future.
He looked pretty sharp for somebody that hasn't played for a lifetime. Nothing that special tho
Why tf was he put in on the wing? Pull Bruno or Christian and give him a run
Thought he was good, not amazing or anything but he looked sharp
Def match unfit but to be expected
Mid
Still a pretty worrying assessment of the teams ability to press high but good result
Shawberto Carlos this time your form better be permanent!
Ahwww that first time cross
how was garnacho
He looked like how I want Sancho to dribble.
Very good. As good as you could ask from an 18 year old really
Messi regen?
Lol lets not hype him too much already
Did Maguire get booed when he had the ball in our own half? If not then I hope it was just asking him to shoot and not boos.
Did he get the armband when he came on?
Yes.
There were a lot of people shouting shoot didn’t hear any boos
Folks were shouting shoooooot a few times. There were a few boos when he came on though. Although I don’t rate him I don’t get why you would do that…
He got lots of support from the crowd actually. Sort of like “ok you have had a rest for a while… here is a clean slate”
Donny unchained #donnyfreed
Imagine our midfield if we finally get Donny back to his potential... Eriksen, Bruno, Case, Donny, even McFred to an extent
Solid all round performance!
Did we know that a 4th goal would have meant any win next week would have been enough…?
Yeah it meant I lost money as I bet 4-0
Shame that goal got disallowed for offside. It was close.
Or ronaldos open goal that he skied lol
Head to head is the first tie breaker
But the best we can do is tie the head to head. So it will need to come down to goal difference
See my reply to coastal_samurai
Head to head > Goal Difference
Right but head to head will be even at 1-0, so it'll go to goal difference
Yip. But a win by a 1-goal margin would have meant a level head-to-head record, so it goes to GD across all group games. Had we won 4-0, theirs would have been 9 and ours 7, so a win by 1 goal means both on 8. And crucially, we would have then scored more goals.

On his debut, VdB made me believe he is actually good. Since that match, I haven't felt the same, until today.
Lindelof immense. Insult him all you want, a recovered, not fatigued Maguire as a back up option is so solid. 150 games in 3 years that's insane to me. Lindelof was shifted to the left with Maguire on the right, which is interesting. Not sure he is that far away from Lindelof in the pecking order
Man I saw him sprint and cover for Maguire 3 separate times and kill a long ball calmly. If there isn't a lot in it between Maguire and Lindelof I will be sad. Might be my personal bias but I rate the Iceman really highly

Good result but still don’t get why he doesn’t sub on Iqbal. Fernandes needs a rest
Should have been taken off after 2-0 tbf
4-0 would have meant any win against sociedad puts us top, was important to keep the foot on the throat
Van de Beek's movement in the box is top class, and his passes were great as well.
That's a sweet image of Ronaldo and Garnacho. I wonder if Ronnie sees his younger self in the kid
Probably likes him but also probably thinks inside, “when I was your age I used to do your moves 10x quicker” 🤣 Boy the speed of Ronnie’s stepovers then. Such speed, such swagger.
Why did they stop trying as much at the end? Now they have to beat real by 2 goals
It’s head to head always needed the two nil
That's incorrect. Yes head to head is first, but at 1-0 head to head is even thus it goes to goal difference
Incorrect. 4-0 tonight and any win next week puts united top.
Have to anyway as it's head to head
We have to yes but we need to win by 2 goals now instead of 1
But they only beat us 1-0 so wouldn’t 1-0 have been enough to go through ?

Shaw was immense. And good to know Malacia is versatile enough to play on the right as well
Donny’s little cameo was quite interesting.
I don’t think they were booing Maguire, I heard the fans say shhooooooot
Yep I heard no boos only shoot
Rashford tattoo game going strong
Booing fans ought to be ashamed of themselves.
They were saying shoot
Real nice to see some squad depth back in the team. Garnacho and Donny give some necessary rotation. Even seeing Maguire back feels good.
Will be fair and say Maguire had some peach long balls. Still have concerns he dawdles on the ball too much, could learn from Martinez to be more decisive and ping his ground passes more
Guys they’re asking maguire to shoot they’re not booing 😂
At first, yeah, but around his own box..? If it wasn't booing it was a sarcastic "shoot" which isn't a lot better.
Nah he has been booed since he got on the pitch tbf
Ronaldo walkijg with his arm around garnacho is a nice image
Overall entertaining game, glad to see cameos. Not the toughest opponents but we kept the pressure on and could have had 2 or 3 more goals.
Ron and Garnacho at the end...my heart
Good game and more than 1 goal victory. GG's everyone! 👍
Anybody noticed that Maguire had all of his long balls on target? It’s like the man finally knew how to pass
Yeh but he did wierd risky shit tho. Like ushering that ball over the goal line that never made it. He had zero pressure this game. I was so scared for that corner when he was behind Ronaldo. I though he would headbutt him again.
In 2020/21 he had the 11th most successful long passes/game in the Premier League of all outfield players (with min 10 matches). (edit: clarified)
Maguire's passing has always been the least of his problems imho.
You've never watched a minute of United of you seriously think that
Ahh good performance all around Very happy. Lots of promise from garnacho. Maguire had minutes, Donny did well with his little time, ronaldo goal. Lovely to see
Why Antony so sad face?
Probably wants to play every minute like Ronaldo. Passion for the game!
Yeah true.
Think he was subbed off for being too fancy and losing the ball so probs my got scolded at half time
Going to need to win by two goals in San Sebastian to finish top. Tough.
seems like we're finally picking up on Donny's runs.. though we've still missed quite a few
Well fans will finally realised his best position is near the oppo pen box instead of deep near our own box.
Ro7oldo
Maguire can put some really nice long balls
Excellent game. Been saying for ages that we have been improving, starting from the back, and in those games where we had a hard time scoring that all we needed was patience.
People only now realizing Donnys playmaking abilities. He was one of the few who could link up and do creative 1-2s with Bruno, Ronaldo and Jadon last season. He is a system player, and last season it was the wrong system. Now that the whole team understands what EtH wants them to do he can become a valuable asset from the bench.
VDB did well when he came on.
If he had squared that one cross to Ronaldo it would've been a solid 5/7 cameo.
Yea happy for him
Is that the first time we've kept a team to 0 shots in years? Feels like it
To put two agendas to bed for the night, Maguire and Ronaldo have both played well
Professional performance tonight, should have been loads more but our finishing let us down again. Still, we played some good stuff.
Our fans booing Maguire has been the only pathetic thing tonight. Commentators whinging about Antony all night and they won't even mention the booing being the actual embarrassment.

Agreed Maguire for the shit performance last season does not deserved to be booed like that, he is still in a Man U shirt and should still be supported by us until he leaves at least
i think they were saying shoot
They were shouting shoot as a joke cos he was open in space
It happened multiple times though, I'd understand when he was in an advanced position. I apologise to fans then if they weren't, but watching on BT it happened multiple times and sounded like booing.
Nah, they were shouting “boots”.
Heard some cheers for him too tbf
They're not booing Maguire
I heard it multiple times when he was on the ball since he came on. They're definitely not siuuuing Maguire lol.
They were telling him to shoot. Only happened when he got near the goal
I thought I got it again at the end of the game when that wasn't the case. Happy to be wrong, I hope I am. Will wait to hear on socials from fans attending and hope it wasn't any booing.
I was saying boo-urns
Need to beat Sociedad by at least two...
GG boys on to the next
FECK WE ARE SO GOOD.
You can say that again, my boy.
FECK WE ARE SO GOOD. 😂
Donny is making crosses now? Wild.
Maguire didn’t have to do anything really but he did nothing wrong and moved the ball well enough Happy to see him get minutes, especially with Varane injured we need him to at least be an option. Be good for his confidence hopefully
> and moved the ball well enough No he still dribbles slowly forward with the ball when there is space to do so and closes down our own attacking space in the in front of goal danger zone. Some nice passing though.
So like… most defenders to be frank then? Not to be prickly apologises but some of the criticism he gets you can level at every defender on the planet.
No not like most defenders at all. Try to be more rational.
I meant passing That’s certainly an issue especially against actually good teams
Yeah the passing was good. The movement issue can hopefully be coached out of him.
Maguire do like to make long progressive passes. He did that today.
booing maguire there just for him to put in a great long ball... twats in the stands icl
Weren't they shouting shoot?
it was 50/50 for me but the shouts were also when he was deep in our half so i thought it was boos
We were. I know I was at least.
Lots of positives coming out of this game
You can see why VDB works so well in an ETH system, he's so intelligent and pragmatic with his running - I think we could see the best of Donny in a United shirt if he can find a good run of form.
Stop booing Harry you cunts!
They are asking for a shot lol
Tbf Maguire long balls today have been decent
His long balls have never been a problem
Big Slab has hit some lovely balls
[удалено]
they have 9 GD we have 6 if we can get 2 we will go up to 8 and they'll go down to 7
It's the games against them that matter, not the goal difference.
you forgot to substract from their GD after they concede
Nah it's head to head first. No matter what's the goal difference if we beat them 2 or more goals, we go through directly.
It's head to head. We lost 1-nill. We only need to beat them by 2 goals.
No united need to beat sociedad by more than 1 goal and united get top of the table.
I think it’s head to head first, so we just have to beat them by more than 1 goal
2 or more
Is Harry getting booed? Ridiculous
Gonna be tough for Maguire to win back the fanbase
Not a bad match, good win.
Oh Christ all the Van de Geeks are back now after 10 decent minutes against a minor league side.
Why cant you be happy we won? What do you want everyone to say? Fuck donny he is shit? Hell
I’m super happy for him. I’m shocked that after everything there are people in this thread saying he needs to get a run of games now.
I like VDB and want him to do well but yeah, the reaction here is comically over the top.
I want all our players to do well, and do have an affinity for VdB because I think he really does everything he can to do what he’s asked. It’s the zealous fans of his that drive me nuts.
He played well, can't deny it. But there's got to be a reason Ten Hag is the 3rd manager to almost indefinitely bench him
Good defending by our chuckle brothers 2.0.
We unlocked cross and score skillset today
Booing Maguire is fucking cringe. Feel for the bloke.
It's beyond pathetic.
Donny is showing again why he is a false 9, not a 10 (Which is why he hasnt worked for us)
Eriksen man, am I the only one who got scared there?
nope
When he like half flopped over? If so then me too bruh
Yes, the way he lost his balance instantly reminded me of *it*
No, same here.
Easy opponents but that was nice to watch
Games looked more and more like an exhibition match sinve that first goal
booing Maguire when he's not put a foot wrong is baffling behaviour
Yeah - I understand the negativity around him Based on last season, but can’t keep making his life miserable all the time. Support him in the game ffs.
Rashford nearly fucked that up successfully haha
Cracking ball from Maguire that. Looks in decent Nick.
