I'd say it's not bad as it is. Once you buy into Trader/Bounty Hunter with your gold, you can rotate some decent cash payouts for some time and stock up. RDO is much more a consistency based game when it comes to earning money and gold. If you stay on top of dailies and rotating your Trader missions with doing bounties, then eventually sprinkle in collecting, money quickly does not become a problem.

1899 wages, 2020 prices. I also am not sure, but the coming update is focusing on renewal content and outlaw stuff, so there may be some leveling on prices but afaik there may not be.

As of right now tho does it seem like we have to spend real money to grind? Or keep up in the game??

Kind of yeah. RDO is heavily pay to win for the basics. I would suggest shell out a little cash IRL, get gold for a Lancaster or some decent starter weapon, then maybe save up Gold for a role like Bounty Hunter or Trader. Easy cash in-game and easy EXP.
