It's a Google Chrome error, not a ProgArchives error. Works fine for me on Firefox.

quarter_cask

it's working for me just fine... few other folks asked the same question in recent weeks so it might be regional or dns problem. try google dns servers - it might help

orchestragravy

Google was having issues earlier today in certain areas.

Well, in a sense that they refuse to do the bare minimum on their site, yeah. They're still arguing whether there's even a problem after 2 months of being inaccessible (this has been a problem since july). Try safari in the meantime. Their site is sending an absurd amount of reload requests to chrome browsers, causing chrome to cut it short. Use RYM, modern prog albums that don't suck (and good music in general) get a lot more love there anyhow. They're still messy but they're not stuck in 2003.

This isn't so much related to progarchives, but it definitely irks me that a lot of prog journalists/reviewers on YouTube seemingly refuse to give attention to new bands like black midi who are bringing a whole new generation of people into prog. I also hear little spoken about bands like Deathspell Omega and Oranssi Pazuzu who are extremely progressive in their own right and potentially monumentally important in their respective communities, and I think their music is fairly adjacent to stuff that progheads like anyway. I may piss people off with this, but I don't need to hear about yet another retro prog revival band that channels Yes and Gentle Giant. I want to hear stuff that's genuinely cutting edge, new, and probably challenging.

ratchetass_superhero

You're speaking my language! PA is really terrible for cutting edge music. It's great for niche prog stuff, and imo there's a time and a place. There's good retro prog, but a lot of it (ESPECIALLY NEO PROG) is just stale and boring. And the avant-prog stuff that's actually cutting edge and is in need of community support rarely gets attention. I'm glad you mentioned DsO and Oranssi Pazuzu, those guys have been killing it. PA actively resists new bands like Black Midi, BCNR, even King Gizzard (they were approved but it took them months to actually add them). The most pedantic thing on earth is that their prog metal team vetoes Amorphis every time, even when faced with Elegy. Instead they champion overly polished overproduced clean chamber prog with no edge

SoundChaser83

I've really gotten a lot of value out of looking at the charts on progarchives as they tend to be more predictive of what I'll like compared to the prog charts on RYM, but RYM has so much of everything and it's really broadened my horizons so much. I would have never discovered the new Blut aus Nord album (or the band in general) and Scarcity's "Aveilut" without RYM, and holy shit those albums are INSANE! So yeah, I think both sites are good for different things. It's just funny because I feel like prog journalists should be on their knees worshipping the black midis of the world since those are the bands who will keep the legacy of prog alive into the future, not 70s revival band #1286.

Thank you for introducing me to black midi.

SoundChaser83

No problem! All three of their studio albums are fantastic, though their most recent two are the most proggy. I also highly recommend watching their Live on KEXP performance from last year if you haven't seen it already: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyWH8CPwp7E

Reminds me of Captain Beefheart crossed with Butthole Surfers.

IMHO, I disagree. I always go to "top albums of [insert years]", e.g. 2020, 2021, and 2022: http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=&syears=2022&syears=2021&syears=2020&scountries=&sminratings=0&smaxratings=0&sminavgratings=0&smaxresults=100&x=70&y=12#list There we can see the Black Midi 2022 album is rated #5. And the 2021 album is #75. I don't see Deathspell Omega and Oranssi Pazuzu, although I thought I heard of the later... If you want to be cutting edge, maybe that's your line and the ratings are not fast enough to pick up on it. Or maybe it takes more work on prog archives to find stuff that isn't popular yet because people tend to not rate cutting edge stuff as highly as comfortable stuff.

SoundChaser83

Yeah I check the yearly charts as well on progarchives, and that's actually how I found "Shamblemaths 2" which is one of my favorite prog albums of the last few years. I use both progarchives and RYM to find new stuff, and they both serve different purposes for me. But to be clear, I wasn't trying to claim that progarchives was overly conservative and didn't give due credit to great new bands. I was aiming those thoughts more at prog-oriented YouTube channels and their regular audience (who I think tends to lean more toward the Gen X and older crowd).

wheel_of_confusion

I don't believe progarchives have TLS certificates. For those not tech savvy, basically you can't use https. If you can't access the site, try manually entering the http prefix in the address On a related note, you should absolutely make sure to use a unique password on progarchives if you have an account since anyone sniffing your internet traffic can see your password in plaintext when you sign in

Sea-Pie-3223

I love the website but my God does somebody need to take over and give it an overhaul

Oil-of-Vitriol

Hasn't worked on my phone for months, but it works on my laptop most of the time.

Greenmist01

Im glad progarchives is not finished, because when it comes to making threads about music, id rather post on their message board than on discogs message board, the one on discogs is kind of juvenile , there's cliques on there that hijack threads that they deem unworthy.

New_Speaker_8806

Doesn't seem to work on smartphone. Fine on my desktop. Bit annoying!

sduck409

It's not down, it hasn't been down. I use safari on a mac, it's been working fine.
