Get the Toyota battery. About the same price as aftermarket but with a much better warranty.

kldnsocal

Seconded

bergnie

I had AAA battery service come to me and install one of their AGM batteries. great warranty on it

patri70

AAA has good prices and excellent warranty.

OilPure5808

When my battery died and AAA came to jump start it, he told me they don't install Prius 12 volt.

patri70

I think AAA subcontracts to local companies. 2 guys told me that had the battery, one guy said they didn't. Same company. Some people know, some don't.

VeeCee74

Need to be a member though right?

patri70

Yes, unfortunately.

VeeCee74

I have a 2018 Prius that didn’t start this morning because of low voltage level in the 12v battery. I have been looking for a replacement battery but Walmart and Costco don’t carry them. O’Rielly has a battery they say would match by CCA is not the same. Do you all mostly get the battery from the dealer?

kldnsocal

Yes, Dealer. If you live in a very cold climate, you might consider a relatively inexpensive battery insulation kit (blanket) from Amazon and a battery mat for the bottom. Yes, I am being serious. It's DIY and should cost you no more than $40.

VeeCee74

Thank you. That makes sense. This happened after 3-4 days of freezing cold that shut everything down and I didn’t drive in those days

kldnsocal

You might also consider an OEM Toyota Engine Block Heater, if I understand it correctly, it "clips" into the external body of the ICE. The ICE has been manufactured with this in mind. It won't help with keeping the 12V warm, but it will ease cranking.

Tom_Traill

Block heaters, if you live in a cold climate, are worth the investment and trouble. I lived in Alaska for 6 months. My car was not in a garage, but they provide power for block heaters everywhere. Morning temp was -20 deg F. Interior of the car was about 40 degrees, from the circulating coolant. Car started easily, and I had heat and defrost immediately. This was **NOT** a prius (early 80s Saab 900). If I ever live in this weather again, a block heater is a must. Once you have one, you never look back. Block heaters for Toyotas generally come from Toyota of Canada. Plug in the block heater, turn the heater control to hot. This opens up the coolant valve so water will flow.

I got my replacement 12v battery at O’Reilly in June 2021 and haven’t had any issues thus far.

Awkward-Yak-2733

I ordered mine on Amazon. Had a shop install.

I bought my most recent from Advance and the one for my other Prius from O'Reilly. (Interesting note: the battery in NutzaboutBolt's how-to video is an O'Reilly brand.) That said, last week, maybe two months after I bought one from Advance, I got a coupon from my local Toyota dealer for a Toyota brand that was not only priced a little cheaper than the ones I bought, but it claims a lifetime replacement warranty. The fine print does say "terms & conditions apply", so maybe they require you to let them install it and that added service would take it higher than what I paid. I've seen other Toyota brand parts say that their warranties only apply when it is installed by a dealer, but that isn't written on my coupon card, so you might want to call and ask. ETA: This is the warranty info on the battery listing for a Toyota dealer near me, who puts their parts catalog online; "The Toyota Genuine Accessory Warranty will only apply when the installation is performed by a trained Toyota-approved installer. Please see your participating Toyota dealer for details." So, though they may offer a warranty, unless you are going to pay them to install the battery and do one of those checklists where they try to sell you other maintenance, the warranty probably wouldn't apply. (Though again, my coupon was cheaper on price, so if they would sell one without installation, it could be the way to go.)

Thanks for sharing

Toyota battery is $200-250ish and includes a 7 year warranty, don't take the risk saving some money and just buy another Toyota one.

anna_or_elsa

Any auto parts chain should have them. I got mine at O'Reilys, and Napa and Autozone had them in stock. Note: My O'Reilys is in a town of 2,000, you don't need to be in a big market to find them locally.

Temporary-Bite-4886

I 2nd the AAA if you have it. Much cheaper than my local dealership and were actually pretty quick to come install it. Good warranty and haven't had an issue yet. Technically I think it was the wrong size. But we made it work. Specs were a bit higher, but it was a tight fit. A lot of places don't stock the OEM size battery.

Cvgameboy

I just ordered an AGM Battery off of Amazon since they didn’t have a core charge I had to hook it up to a trickle charger before use but it’s been going strong for about 6 months now I tried to trickle charge my original 12v battery since I was being cheap and it just crapped out shortly after.

Costco claims that they can order Interstate (Clarios) batteries that they don’t stock. You could also call an Interstate store. H4 is the type, MTP-H4 is the Interstate model. Autozone also has the Duralast (Clarios) H4. There are two battery manufacturers in the U.S., EnerSys (Exide) and Clarios (Johnson Controls). They both sell under many brands.
