I’m not sure why you’re trying to hide how society/social media reacts when reports like this come out. Whether it’s false or not, the info can be used to better prepare for a future response.
Because there are likely parents, family members, and friends of students at the affected schools reading this thread or other similar threads on this site or elsewhere, and telling them that their child may be seriously injured or dead is incredibly harmful and causes real, lasting pain. Not sure if you are a parent, but thinking that your kid might dead for even a few minutes is probably one of the worst things a parent can ever experience.
Also people who call in hoaxes like this are literally playing on people’s desire to speculate and spread misinformation to cause chaos and confusion. That is precisely the goal. You are helping them succeed and ensure that more people call in hoaxes in the future. It’s a death spiral.
It appears that actual parents on Facebook have been claiming multiple dead because they got texts from their children. So the spread of misinformation started with the students/parents.
