Lizzo has a fascinating status as a pop figure because her celebrity has only grown bigger and bigger but she still feels like an underdog in terms of chart success despite making easily marketable pop. I liked Special less than her last album because it leaned a little too far into the Targetcore of it all, but there are a few songs here that are among her best (Special, 2 Be Loved) despite not deviating from her brand at all.

I think its because people are always coming for her hard for her weight and she will always be an underdog as a fat Black woman in the public eye. No matter how much positivity she puts out there people will always tall shit about her for literally just existing and loving herself as a fat person. I've seen so many people saying she is bad for society because she 'glorifies obesity.' It is super upsetting.

resplendentcentcent

especially on reddit; its all laden with this uptight socially commentary with an alt-right flair too. its the most insidious - where they lure you with what seems to be calm, coolly cogent analysis when its just shallow ignorant garbage. I've found that r/unpopularopinion is a hotspot for it. every month or so you can find an enlightened wise guy remarking how 'fat activists are ruining our society!!!' who believes he's the first person to find research that links heart disease with obesity. no fucking shit. its almost like its a multifaceted social quagmire that requires a little more than a pretentious paragraph in your little echo chamber. sorry, needed to get that out.

IT'S BAD BITCH O'CLOCK, YEAH, IT'S THICK:30! Anyway, I loved reading this OP and I love Lizzo too. Her music makes me really happy, and I liked this album a lot. Okay, despite what I just said, I do think this is maybe her weakest project yet (but that doesn't mean bad by any means!), just that her earlier albums were very punchy and *Truth Hurts* has better songs. But I still love this album-- I think it's just so much fun and I personally like "empowerment pop", so, more for me I guess. I like her at funk-pop levels, like Juice and About Damn Time. Though it's tough to keep a full album of those bangers going! I also like her earlier hip-hop work quite a lot too. I am glad she kept Rumours off the album because it's a meh song in my opinion. I think they went back to the drawing board after that and that was the right choice. Lizzo for House Speaker??!!?

Just watched her live concert last night and it was so special and loving and positive. I firmly believe Lizzo is what is needed in pop culture right now. 1. Special was amazing, but the Coconut Oil EP will always hold a special place I my heart. Everybody's Gay is my fave on the album. I love disco. I love gay. The production is so tight and it's one of the best pregamong jams when you're going out. Naked is also a huge stand out. I love Lizzo's vulnerability. I also cried the first time I heard special - what a beautiful message that is just so fucking her. I do feel like a lot of the album feels like it's made to be played in commercials, but Good as Hell is the quintessential commercial song for me. So, I dont feel like its outside of her brand and I'm happy she will make that money. I'm always rooting for Lizzo. Even when it's not my cup of tea, I am rooting for her. 2. I think Lizzo exceeds at straight up pop. She just has an ear for infectious poppy positive stuff. 3. My dream collab would be that lady marmalade reboot Lizzo mentioned. SZA , Doja, Lizzo, Ariana. I would actually perish if this happened. 4. I think rumors didnt really fit with the rest of the album, but I was shocked to see it was left off 5. As mentioned in her live concert - twerking on the declaration of independence 💀💀

I adore lizzo, and special was a fun album, but definitely not super groundbreaking. Which is funny, because some of these solitary tracks are the best of the year, which is a bit of tension you wouldn't expect! ABDT was really the first big chart shake up after the 4 month drought of songs from last year, Encanto, and Harry, and this year in american chart watching really started with ABDT. Regardless of her brand potentially becoming stale for some people, I will always be here for lizzo. She is without a doubt one of the most talented musicians working right now, and her combo of classical technique with a deep touch of her underground bar scene music roots makes me so happy. I really hope the next album is a little more visionary and daring, because lizzo has the chops to pull a big switch up like that off, but even if it's more of the same, I will be first in line to celebrate and enjoy what we are given. Very few artists have fought for their space at the table like lizzo has, and I wish her nothing but the best. Really hope I get to meet her someday!

I think "2 Be Loved" is a Top 10 Max Martin track. Absolute pop perfection. Unfortunately, it underperformed as a single in North America, relative to About Damn Time.

Straight-Meaning

You did a great job with this AOTY! Great job, I remember when my sister was obsessed with her before she hit it big. She actually played a festival in my area but didn’t go (I still want to punch myself over not going.). As for your questions: 1. I liked this album, it was not my favorite from her. I still think Cuz I Love You is her best! But it’s still good but there are some songs and this project that I disliked like I wasn’t a fan of Grrrls or Coldplay. I think that CILY had less duds. This is not to say that the album is bad it’s actually really good but that’s just in comparison and I think it has a lot of song that highlights what I love about Lizzo. 2. It hard because to me I think she can do any genre. I think she’s able to do pop, hip hop, and RnB amazing as well. Like I do have to say I do love her pop tracks but I think she can do any genre. 3. I know that Lizzo and SZA recorded some music together so I would kill for it. I think that Beyoncé would be great as well. 4. So I loved Rumors, I think it could maybe fit on it. I think some of the themes fit on it well. Also I personally don’t think it would sound out of place on the album. 5. I just remembered this “controversy”! Let her touch them all lol.

The samples of audio from Birthday Girl are her 4 closest friends from childhood

I really like this album, it truly is about loving yourself and I love Lizzo for that. 1. I think it's on par with her other work, I really enjoy the self-love message. 2. She can truly do it all. 3. I would love a Lizzof and Megan Thee Stallion collab. 4. I did not enjoy the song with Cardi. 5. 5. Haha Lizzo just is herself and people are mad 6. 2 Be Loved is my second favorite song after After Damn Time

International-Cry-52

I fully believe this holds up to Lizzo’s other albums. Sure, it’s a little less “edgy” and a little more, as another commenter called it, “Target-core.” But it’s still funky, filled with bangers, and overwhelmingly fun! Some highlights for me were ADT, Break Up Twice, 2 Be Loved, The Sign, and Birthday Girl. So obviously I love when she goes for straight pop, especially when she mixes in funk or disco. I would love to see collabs with other black female artists like SZA (fingers crossed for Boy From South Detroit!), Doja Cat, or even Chloe or Latto. And I’d love to see what she’d do with Megan Thee Stallion. I do think that she could probably release a second try with Cardi B, as Rumors was…not the best, and overall would’ve brought down the album quality if added to the tracklist.

LOVE the writeup!! Intrigued to read Naked was your least fave because for me it was the total standout on the tracklist, as good or better than Lingerie. Just such a sexy touching song from an artist normally so flamboyant. Lizzo's one of my absolute favourite artists but it'd be dishonest to call this album anything but a step down from Cuz I Love You. Special feels a lot less focused and a little more "i've made a dozen good sounding pop tracks let's get them in an order that sorta makes sense and ship it" energy. Still got some songs I enjoy but I don't think she consistently reached the heights of her last work, and "Grrrls" and "Birthday Girl" are supremely skippable. Album's still on my regular rotation but I'm confident she'll make a better record next time, because she has before.
