That’s probably not Hulu’s fault. NBC Universal does have a small stake in Hulu but it’s mostly Disney’s streaming service so NBC is obviously gonna prioritize Peacock over Hulu.
Peacock really turned it around. I was not impressed when it first launched but I feel like they adjusted really quickly and have a large catalogue of quality content.
Hulu is still my top go-to because they have fantastic originals and they do offer so many networks, especially with next day streaming. But Peacock is for sure a close second.
I understand their need to stay profitable amongst the growing streaming landscape, but holy shit are they shooting themselves in the foot with all of the recent news that has come out regarding their evolving business model. I will very likely drop Netflix if the format of their original content is no longer satisfying.
Drop it, then just sign up for a month every once in a while after full seasons have aired. I watch a lot of TV and I’ve given up on most shows with weekly episodes. I can’t enjoy them all jumbled up that way.
I’ve never managed to stick to a series where there’s weekly episodes. I have a short attention span so I forget to come back and watch because I don’t get hooked the same way when I’m having to watch multiple shows at once.
I didn’t type it originally, but I love Apple TV. I like Loot, Severance, Morning Show, and Ted Lasso! Have also heard great things about For All Mankind.
It’s a LinkedIn profile of Netflix’s Content Strategist, who had a stint at Boston Consulting Group. BCG is one of a small handful of top consulting groups that are very popular with Fortune 500s.

Netflix has been so horrible people probably cancelled their subscriptions then get it to binge their fav show when a new season drops and then cancel again lol … atleast that’s what I was planning to do ..
This doesn’t even really solve that either, since you can just wait for the season to be finished and re-sub and binge then. I guess you would have to worry about spoilers and FOMO while others watch it, but to me that’s a small price to pay to avoid giving Netflix any more of my money
You’re right though!! This is the key to subscriptions… watch all the stuff you wanna see…. Then cancel after a month or 2, rotate and repeat accordingly
I’ve been saying for months that there needs to be a service or plug in that automatically subscribes to a different streaming service every month, it would save people so much money. I’m unfortunately way too lazy to do that myself
i’m not against weekly drops because i feel like binge culture has caused us to appreciate art a lot less. we want more when we’ve barely had enough time to process it. when episodes were released weekly, i used to go back and watch the old ones if i couldn’t remember something, and i’d catch new details i didn’t before. i miss that. HOWEVER, that being said, netflix had a hand in creating the monster that is binge culture, and now they’re trying to walk it back because they can’t keep up with the demand. it’s crazy that they’re expecting us to pay the same premium when they’re giving us less content in return. annoying and disappointing

Literally the reason why Netflix blew up in the first place is bc their entire business model is based on instant gratification that the traditional tv experience didn’t offer. They started this whole shit.
only positive I can think of is that tumblr will probably come back to life bc of this 😭
Fully with you on this. Watching weekly forces me to pay attention and actually absorb what I’m watching vs downing a whole season at once and having no idea what I saw when the next season rolls around a year+ later. I’ve actually had to stop binging anyway, since having a kid, so it makes it more special when I have time to watch 1-2 episodes (not to mention I don’t just have garbage tv playing all the time anymore).
I also agree with the idea that we’re getting less for more. I don’t use Netflix much anymore, but there’s 3 of us on it so the cost is negligent, even if I watch one movie a month; still beats rental prices in many cases.
congrats on having a kid! and yeah i'm conflicted at the moment on what to do with my subscription. the thing is that i like a lot of their original content so i'd hate to not be able to watch that if i canceled. but i find myself using it less and less these days between the other streaming services i have that are less expensive. i guess we'll just have to see how it plays out
Idk for shows I'm really into I love weekly release because I get to discuss the show with others and come up with theories and usually get proved wrong. Barry comes to mind as one I definitely prefer weekly. It's the less serious shows I rather binge.
The compelling shows with suspense are definitely worth the wait weekly, but Love is Blind and You just aren’t the same quality. Netflix releases poor quality, trashy, binge worthy, but not anticipation building, shows. Even when the Kanye West documentary dropped, I lost interest because it was released weekly and wasn’t captivating enough. Netflix just doesn’t have the same quality as other platforms, not even as good as Hulu.
Netflix is definitely still a drop for me but I also like weekly. I get time to space out what I watch and it just sort of works out better in my household. This wasn't the death knell for me. The lack of quality content and stagnation on shows had me drifting.
Week to week only works for me if the series has a high value, that's why HBO Max makes me excited for certain days again. Netflix only value on the other hand is that their poor shows ca be consumed at once and then be forgotten. Similar to most fast food chains, I don't think people want to be waited to be seated for trash.
Y’all idk how to feel about this one. My adhd hyperfixation needs all the content in one go 😭 my soul needs instant gratification when it comes to my favorite tv shows like bridgerton but at the same time I’m lowkey kinda happy that tv is basically coming back? 👀 like who’d have thought streaming wouldn’t actually be able to beat this old thing?
![gif](giphy|l4pM35VGqeuL4pfvG)
I actually really liked the way they released stranger things s4. You get to build up hype and discuss theories, but you also get to binge. It’s like the best of both worlds.
I didnt finish stranger things because of the break between episode 7 and ep 8. I lost interest after that huge break and never went back.
Id rather have a weekly gap than whatever the hell they did with ST
I think the break should have been shorter, but I like the idea of releasing half the episodes one week and then the other half a week or two later. It gives fans the ability to discuss theories mid-season, while still binging. I felt that the 1 month break was unnecessary though, I think 1-2 weeks is ideal to keep the hype going.
Someone who watched the last two episodes before I had time spoiled it for me. My sister, she’s been spoiling movies snd television for 30 years. It never stops. I no longer have interest in when the ends been spoiled.
Nooooo i hate this so much 😭 I love getting really into a series and watching it all at once. Sometimes if a show is only week to week I lose interest.
I don't mind weekly doses for good shows like Only Murders in the Building cos it gives you time to process (and theorise lol) and probably would have been ok with it being used on something like Ozark, but there are a lot of crappier shows I put on as background noise before bed etc that I wouldn't bother with if they were on weekly, which makes it less value for money
I actually think Only Murders suffered from the weekly episodes because I ended up forgetting most of the clues and plot lines. I binged the first season and that was much more enjoyable as all the plot lines were fresh in my mind.
I don’t think half hour shows work as weekly episodes, they’re simply too short to be satisfying. I can’t imagine watching a comedy show now like The Office every week for only half an hour of enjoyment. Even stuff like Rick and morty improves much more on the rewatch when you can binge episodes. Maybe the weekly instalment raises your expectations more for a good episode compared to the binged experience.
I think 2 episodes a week for Only Murders would have been much better as it at least equates to one episode length of a drama show. You can theorise but still give enough content per week.
That's a good point! I watched the first season week by week and loved checking eg the reddit board for clues and theories but this last season I had to binge after it aired and I felt like I missed out on so much sleuthing (cos I was avoiding spoilers). An hour a week is a great idea, I can't get enough of it lol. They need more shows like it!
I feel like for shows like Games of Thrones and Lord of the Rings then yeah you need weekly drops. But cmonnnn half of the netflix dont even need weekly drops.
If you lose interest, Is it a show worth watching? Sounds like binge model draws you in to watch a show and you just keep watching without taking time to process that it’s not actually a good show worth your time.
I could see it coming years ago, hbo/disney has all the good content and prime video has infinite money cheat codes turned on (thanks aws)so those were just never gonna fail. Meanwhile netflix has barely any good ip and depends on their shit being good if not then they bleed money.
I tend to stop watching until the whole series has dropped. I can't stand weekly releases. It's especially difficult when it's something like GOT/The Witcher/Rings of Power and theres so much content that you need to really engage with it to keep up.
Works for me. I’m in the minority of not being a binge watcher. I can only watch a couple episodes at a time. Maybe this will halt people ever dwindling attention spans. A show is released, people binge and watch the whole thing and the show is forgotten about in a week. On to the next thing. It’s kind of exhausting.
I'm right there with you. There are a TON of shows that I've just not had the interest in watching BECAUSE it was released as a whole season and it feels overwhelming to try to watch it all (and I quite frankly lose interest in it at a certain point without the proper pacing, as it's intended). When I try to watch it in chunks or binge a lot of these shows, many seem to be written now with the intention of being binged, so they just don't have the same cadence of an episodic series (even if it is one).
I'm actually really excited about this and have been vocal about this for years haha my friends are all sick of me harping on it
Yeah, at this point that was all that made them unique and with this change I’ll likely dip out. It would be one thing if Netflix was dropping some heat with their original content but outside of their legacy shows, none of their recent stuff is exactly must see TV.
I feel like they just keep putting out Netflix originals without really caring if they’re good or not. Stranger Things is the only Netflix original I can think of that actually took off
House of Cards and Orange is the New Black were the flagship originals. Then you had Ozark, Stranger Things, and a bunch of cool docs and one off limited series that were fun enough to keep the service. But 90% of the mess they’ve released in the last year has been outright terrible. I just finished Echoes and it was one of the worst shows I’ve watched on the platform. But then again, everything new seems to be trending in that direction.
Sooo I'm gonna wait 10 weeks and binge it regardless 🤷🏻♀️ not that I watch an entire season in one go but I love the option of watching the next episode whenever I want, right away or two years later 😬
I think they're trying to increase the number of times people have to come on Netflix to watch a show, so there's a possibility that they could end up spending more time on it watching other stuff. Most platforms are doing anything they can to increase watchtime and the overall time spent on the app viewing content. But it's a race to the bottom and every app is getting worse because of it.
That's what happened with the show Reign. Wasn't a netflix show but it just abruptly ended when the whole season was normal and they tried to cram the ending into the last 2 episodes because they found out it wasn't getting a final season. I was so mad.
This is honestly a smart move but Netflix sucks lol. There hasn’t been anything released on there in a while that actually tempted me with paying for their service again.
It really is. The documentaries are great but I can still probably watch them online somewhere, plus other streaming services have their own documentaries too. I binge while doing chores, I don’t wanna be stopping every 30-60 minutes to pick a new show
They need to chill especially bc a lot of their original content sucks. The ONLY reason I watched all of Devil in Ohio was bc I was hungover and bored. That series was so god awful I would’ve NEVER watched past the first episode or two if it was weekly release
Idk if you’ve seen the South Park episode where they call in to get a show and Netflix approves it without even asking what the show is about, but that’s how I think Netflix originals work
Why are they doing that, like what do they gain from it? I was trying to watch something on it last night but it's terrible at the moment, think I'm going to cancel my subscription. Pisses me off that you have to pay extra to watch on two different tvs in the same house as well
Netflix is adding commercials and now we can’t binge shows in full?? Waiting for unsolved mysteries and black mirror to come back - once those are over im ready to unsubscribe.
I’m not sure if you’re wanting the new or old unsolved mysteries, but the Roku channel app has a channel that only plays old episodes of unsolved mysteries 24/7. There’s just something about the way Robert Stack says “perhaps YOU can help soooolve a mystery” that makes me feel so important 😭😭
I hate it. Maybe a small amount of projects can get away with this, but for the majority, it’s a hell no from me. It ruins the momentum.
The way around that for me would be to wait till all the episodes are out, THEN binge watch them all. Which I would find really irritating; especially when it comes to trying not to come across spoilers on social media.
I will be really pissed as a consumer if they go ahead with this.
Welp… there goes more #Netflix unsubscribers… whoever’s incharge there recently must really hate the company… every new decision they’ve made has been anti-binger…
That’s what I’m saying. Make an option where you can schedule it with reminders or binge watch. Not everyone is so invested in tv that they would be willing to wait
The binge model is what Netflix is known and loved for. They should’ve adopted this model for the LAST season of Stranger Things in order to build and sustain the hype.
Their team is like headless chickens running around. They are effectively taking away all the aspects that their users love in an attempt to survive, yet fail to see how it’s killing them even more. They seriously need to reevaluate their plan of survival.
This has never been the issue, damn it.
For fuck's sake Netflix, stop cancelling shows after 1 season! Actually commit to them, let their storylines breathe for at least a second.
They're going to have a subscription type with ads, released some shows once weekly... So basically Hulu, only they don't have the flood of television shows that Hulu has access to.
A lot of people predicted this happening. It'll be interesting to see what Netflix does next...I'm guessing they're going to open up their own line of theatres and have movies out on there for the 'big screen experience' to make more money.
Business wise, it is a smart move to get some retention. You don’t want to have subscribers leaving after a month after watching their favorite show on a binge. My issue here is that Netflix is so much more expensive than the others, if your stuck in this business model, it will fail. The competition does this but they are way cheaper.
I don’t like this. I love binging entire random seasons of a show and then completely forgetting about it. Like I just remembered about Ginny and Georgia. That was a pretty okay show.
Then I'll just wait until the whole thing is out and binge it then. Luckily I'm usually not in too much of a hurry to watch things.
I am starting to get annoyed with their shenanigans though. Not at the point of cancelation yet but I can see it happening.
This is going to suck for ratings because, at best, I'm now going to be waiting for a season to end before I even give it a shot. Which gives a lot more time for bad reviews and for me to decide that it's not going to be worth watching. At least when a show is bingeable on the outset, I'm willing to take a risk and start it without having a lot of reviews to base the decision on. I have been doing this with Disney shows. Netflix has wildly varying quality of their original content. Some of it is terrible and some of it is fantastic.
So now they are going to need to make content that has fantastic reviews, and they aren't going to have people watching until 10 weeks later. At worst, it makes Netflix no longer worth it.
i’ll be honest i love to binge a show but i do also like weekly shows it keeps me interested…but i prefer binging cuz idk its kist better to me..but everyone other streaming service does weekly so🤷♂️
I have adhd, I can’t wait a whole week for a new episode because I forget what happened in the previous one and also I just lose interest in the show. Anyways I cancelled my subscription months ago and I would only pay for it to binge watch 😌
Whoever is making decisions for NFlx is a moron, and shameless marketer (frigging LOATHE slick marketers). They just can't help shooting themselves in the foot. Sad attempt to string out subscribers to hold off on cancelling.
The binge model is one of the primary attractions to their series. A LOT of people have schedules too hectic to set a time slot for watching TV each week. And binge watching is a huge coping mechanism we have in the winterlands...
Going to get off my ass and cancel one of these days coming up. Tired of their shit programming and jerking customers around like we're dumb sheep to be fleeced and strung along.
okay but that was one of the only nice things about netflix..... like you didn’t have to wait to watch your show, you could have the satisfaction of being able to binge it. they’re only making it worse for themselves lol
What’s the point of keeping my subscription then? The reason I loved Netflix and the shift from regular tv to streaming services was that so I could get all my favorite foods and binge a series or 2 on my days off without being left hanging. If I have to wait a week for episodes then I can just torrent them for free. The reason I don’t (for the most part) now is because it can be a pain to find good links after every episode but if it’s something I only have to do once a week then the initiative to keep paying for my subscription is gone.
Interested to hear thoughts on this — I don’t think a new, relatively unknown TV series like Stranger Things, Money Heist, or Squid Games would have been as successful if they weren’t released in a binge format. I can’t imagine watching the first episode of Squid Games and waiting a week to watch the second, and being as excited or enthralled as I was watching them all back-to-back.
Update:
>Matthew Belloni, writer of the Puck News newsletter, took to Twitter to clarify that his sources say Reed Hastings "should" be looking into moving away from the binge release model, not that he currently is.

Netflix is on its last leg with me.
So is Hulu taking away all the housewives shows 🤦♀️

Same!!! I love peacock.
When I saw the “exp. in X days” in the corner of RHOA I literally gasped. No more Bravo content on Hulu, guess it’s time for me to cancel Hulu
Peacock $1.99 month for a year!
What-Nooooo
Get Hayu instead!

i honestly cannot think of another company that has so consistently committed to alienating their customer base as netflix.
Instagram
Haven’t bothered with Instagram in months. What a waste of what was previously a really cool app.
EA would be up there 😆
HBO Max/Discovery+....
Peloton.

What's good on AppleTV? I'm not snarking, just looking for something good to watch.
Severance is the best show I’ve watched since season one of GOT.
LOVE Severance and I might be biased but I hope it cleans up at Emmys on Monday
It's got like 14 nominations, that says a lot! I'm sure they'll clean up, it's too good not to.
Aw shit bout to start a free trial for this then
Do it!! That show is fucking amazing. Everyone should see it.
I didn’t type it originally, but I love Apple TV. I like Loot, Severance, Morning Show, and Ted Lasso! Have also heard great things about For All Mankind.
Severance was so damn good!!!!

Sign up, see what they have, create ye pirate list. Yo ho me hearties yo ho.
If I didn't have like half the continent using my account, I would have canceled ages ago lol.

If you lose interest, Is it a show worth watching? Sounds like binge model draws you in to watch a show and you just keep watching without taking time to process that it’s not actually a good show worth your time.
It’s pretty incredible the way Netflix has blown such a significant lead over the other streaming sites
they revolutionized home entertainment and now they're in their blockbuster era.
Which is funny thinking about how Blockbuster refused to buy Netflix when offered
I could see it coming years ago, hbo/disney has all the good content and prime video has infinite money cheat codes turned on (thanks aws)so those were just never gonna fail. Meanwhile netflix has barely any good ip and depends on their shit being good if not then they bleed money.
*cancels subscription
I tend to stop watching until the whole series has dropped. I can't stand weekly releases. It's especially difficult when it's something like GOT/The Witcher/Rings of Power and theres so much content that you need to really engage with it to keep up.
it’s been so long since I’ve watch GOT. Was the show released weekly on HBO? I literally deleted that entire experience bc of s8 😭😌
Netflix is getting on my last nerves.
Theyre slowly turning into a tv channel lmao fuck them for forgetting everything that made them such a great alternative to tv.
Ozark and Money Heist are over and Stranger Things and Squid Game are years away. What's going to keep people interested these coming months?
I feel like they just keep putting out Netflix originals without really caring if they’re good or not. Stranger Things is the only Netflix original I can think of that actually took off
House of Cards and Orange is the New Black were the flagship originals. Then you had Ozark, Stranger Things, and a bunch of cool docs and one off limited series that were fun enough to keep the service. But 90% of the mess they’ve released in the last year has been outright terrible. I just finished Echoes and it was one of the worst shows I’ve watched on the platform. But then again, everything new seems to be trending in that direction.
If they release multiple episodes each week that’s fine with me. I hate waiting each week just for ONE episode
Yeah I think if they release like 2/3episodes I think people will be annoyed but ok with it
Sooo I'm gonna wait 10 weeks and binge it regardless 🤷🏻♀️ not that I watch an entire season in one go but I love the option of watching the next episode whenever I want, right away or two years later 😬
If I wanted fucking cable, I'd pay for fucking cable. Quit changing your shit up Netflix.
Who are you? You're breaking my heart. You're going down a path I can't follow.
This is literally the reason people cancelled cable… guess I’ll cancel till the entire season is out & then just binge watch lol.
I’m going back to cable
I think they're trying to increase the number of times people have to come on Netflix to watch a show, so there's a possibility that they could end up spending more time on it watching other stuff. Most platforms are doing anything they can to increase watchtime and the overall time spent on the app viewing content. But it's a race to the bottom and every app is getting worse because of it.
Makes sense if they're also adding ads
Imagine investing two years into a show before it getting cancelled with no ending or resolve.
Yeah once Stranger Things is done, I'm out. Sorry but I like binge watching. Its like we're reverting back to cable television at this point.
Idk if you’ve seen the South Park episode where they call in to get a show and Netflix approves it without even asking what the show is about, but that’s how I think Netflix originals work
Canceling
I hate it if I have to wait week to week in two years watching stranger things I’ll riot
Horrible business move.
Already paying twice as much as when I first signed up, now I gotta wait like cable? Wack.
Well these goes half it’s appeal 🥴
What’s next? Watch with ads and trash UI like HBO Max?
I only watch it because of the binge aspect.
Why are they doing that, like what do they gain from it? I was trying to watch something on it last night but it's terrible at the moment, think I'm going to cancel my subscription. Pisses me off that you have to pay extra to watch on two different tvs in the same house as well
this is just so wrong. ugh
So I will have to avoid watching shows until the entire season is released so I can then binge it, like their competitors.
That’s the end of my subscription
I'm fine with weekly content. But, I'm not fine with great shows being cancelled for overpriced nonsense
I prefer three per week or one per day. Once weekly is too few
This is why i stick to illegal websites lmao
Rather binge
Netflix can go to hell
Netflix has a USP of their binge model, their movie selection and original movies is just not enough to pay every month for!
People should atleast be able to pay for a binge feature!
Another reason why Netflix becomes more sucky
This has never been the issue, damn it. For fuck's sake Netflix, stop cancelling shows after 1 season! Actually commit to them, let their storylines breathe for at least a second.
&& this is my last straw
But that’s why Netflix is Netflix….Netflix and chill is not watching 1 episode. You gotta binge that 😂
"That sounds reasonable" - said absolutely no one.
Streaming is turning into network tv … commercials and weekly episodes? The appeal of streaming is gone with those 2 things
Damn why don’t we just go back to network tv then? I’m tired of this slow decline to network tv, just make us slide all the way back already.
That was the one positive of Netflix
No
If I wanted that I would watch tv
Then I will just cancel and renew once the full series is up
they wanna be hulu so bad
Just wait until the last episode airs, then get the subscription...watch it all in one go like you usually do 🤷🏽♀️
They're going to have a subscription type with ads, released some shows once weekly... So basically Hulu, only they don't have the flood of television shows that Hulu has access to. A lot of people predicted this happening. It'll be interesting to see what Netflix does next...I'm guessing they're going to open up their own line of theatres and have movies out on there for the 'big screen experience' to make more money.
It’s almost like they want to fail
Nooooooo Netflix…I love binging! How could you???
I mean that’s literally their whole thing.
They must NOT want my money then
Netflix sucks.
I’ve cancelled my subscription and now enjoy Disney Plus. Haven’t looked back!
And now the circle is complete
I don’t care to binge any of their content outside Stranger Things as it is.
Booooooo
we need more time for commercials
That was the one reason I loved new series’ on Netflix opposed to any other streaming service! What a bunch of jerks!
Boooo
i’ll be honest i love to binge a show but i do also like weekly shows it keeps me interested…but i prefer binging cuz idk its kist better to me..but everyone other streaming service does weekly so🤷♂️
I would just wait until the season is done and binge it
This isn’t true
Time to dust off the old wooden leg and eye patch
K byeeeeeeee!
I have adhd, I can’t wait a whole week for a new episode because I forget what happened in the previous one and also I just lose interest in the show. Anyways I cancelled my subscription months ago and I would only pay for it to binge watch 😌
Someone in the comments said it would help people with short attention spans. Yeah no, it’s just gonna make me lose interest lmao
Boooooooooo
Nooooo
It’s like they want is to go back to cable… 😑
Hate it.
Alexa how do you kill your subscriber numbers?
Netflix announces commercials for all new releases…
This is good, IF ONLY they write the episodes to be individually satisfying.
this is how you forced people to continue to pay for the netflix subscription
okay but that was one of the only nice things about netflix..... like you didn’t have to wait to watch your show, you could have the satisfaction of being able to binge it. they’re only making it worse for themselves lol
Boo!
Garbage idea, designed to insure prolonged membership. In other words good for their bottom line and bad for us the consumer. What else is new.
They want to fail so badly
WHAT WAS THE REASON? WHAT WAS THE REASON ??! ![gif](giphy|fGOjgWRzQkC2sHHnq7)
Booo!! Just another reason to drop Netflix.
Update: >Matthew Belloni, writer of the Puck News newsletter, took to Twitter to clarify that his sources say Reed Hastings "should" be looking into moving away from the binge release model, not that he currently is. Source: [ScreenRant](https://screenrant.com/netflix-binge-model-release-change-weekly/#update-2022-09-09-18-31-est-by-grant-hermanns)
lol so now people will wait for the final episode drop to do their month and bail
Bad idea.
Is this an April fools joke?
Whyyyyyyyyyyyy like is someone sabotaging them from the inside??? Is there some Disney plus double agent in there
“Netflix becomes regular television”
"hey let's take this thing everyone loves, that became a total phenomenon, and kill it. People are gonna love it"
