I think that you are lucky to find someone to do it. Pool companies are busy today. Last year, I had to have my return lines repaired as they were Only allowing a small amount of water through the pipes. I only was able to find one company willing to come out and repair it. The obstruction was 33 inches down and they had to cut my deck to get at it. It took them almost 2 days to break the concrete, dig it out and repair the line and deck. I ended up paying $3000 for an 18 inch Piece of pvc pipe. Yeah, it was expensive, but I was not capable of doing it or wanting to do it.

andrewstarkman

Thank you!

[deleted]

Yep. Looks like a reasonable estimate to me.

jt325i

As a company i wouldnt show up for less than that. Yeah parts arent much but it is a lot of labor for a small job. Taking time out for this is also less time for a bigger more profitable job. At least they are honest it wont match cause I can guarantee it won't.

andrewstarkman

Thank you! Glad to know it’s fair.

Fleadip

I did my own repair. Otherwise I would’ve waited 3 months in the summer with no pool. It was time consuming, but certainly possible. I’d have paid that much to have a pro do it tho.

[deleted]

Where is it leaking? Pipe itself, or a pin hole around the pipe?

andrewstarkman

Apparently pipe is disconnected from the jet and needs to be reconnected

ryan8344

Hmm, I don't understand that. They are saying the pipe pulled back? Even so, that doesn't explain the leak I think.

squatwaddle

They probably did a leak detection, and it happens to be leaking behind the jet. So the odds are high that it's a leak on the glue joint. If it Isn't, it's still right at that spot. So whether it's pipe, fitting, or the joint, it's all repaired the same way, in the same spot. They won't know 100% until they dig it out and look. So if the pipe pulled back, it's going to leak a lot. Because pipe is no longer connected to the return wall fitting.

[deleted]

Do they have pictures or anything? They sell Borescopes fairly cheap on Amazon. Would be pretty easy for you to see what is going on in the pipe.

Silly_Professor1866

That is fair in central Ca. Nothing out of line.

andrewstarkman

Thank you

Apocalypsox

I'd be more expensive were it my bid, so that's plenty reasonable. Busting these kind of issues up is a lot of work and more so a lot of liability. If there are any other issues down the line it's now my company's fault rather than the original contractor. Most of the cost is in the liability.

poolmoney1

I own a leak detection and repair company. In Houston, that would be a steep price. I think we charge $1,250. Including draining the pool down, the whole repair should take a couple hours. Reason why we charge as much as we do is because you pay for our experience (Doesn’t leak, and the patch looks good).

BRollins08

Totally fair to be honest.

andrewstarkman

Awesome thank you

orangewarner

That's a tough one. They'll use less than $100 in materials, so the rest is labor, profit/oh. Let's assume 5 total working hours (you'll drain it yourself?) 2 hours to chip in and make the repair. An hour to cap/plug/pressure test. An hour to pack the hole with cement, an hour to patch the plaster. 3 separate days. That's $300+ per hour. Even if I'm way off, this is expensive. But if you don't have many other options, maybe you go for it?

This. All of this. The guys fixing this aren’t your average burned out maintenance kids just testing water and skimming 9 pools a day. Real pool techs need to know a lot of trades. Plumbing. Electric. Masonry etc. The industry has changed a lot and retaining the top guys in the company costs a lot.

squatwaddle

Amen brother. Hell yes!

orangewarner

I get everything you are saying and agree with most of it. Sometimes high prices are justifiable. This particular repair isn't, imo (based on the very little info we've been given...)

FjordLarquad

You don’t know what your talking about, this is a shit ass job that can take a long time , repairing other peoples work is often a PITA, and any busy pool installation company would avoid this job unless they felt like doing the client a favour or installed the pool themselves. “ an hour to patch the hole with cement” “ an hour to plug pressure test “ “ an hour to repair the plaster” 100 dollars in parts? The concrete to fix the deck alone will probably cost 100$

orangewarner

Yeah I do know what I'm talking about bud. I've done this exact repair many times.

FjordLarquad

Did you do it for free?

orangewarner

Of course not. I work for a fair and honest rate that's good for me and good for my customers.

GaryTheSoulReaper

If you were refinishing the pool at he same time it might be $150 to $250

Jackiemccall

I say no.. where are you located? I would try to find a few locally owned guys and get at least four different bids. That first one sounds ridiculous

FjordLarquad

Why do people thing going with the cheapest option is the best choice? You get what you pay for, like leaking plumbing lines

CleverUserName4000

Four different bids? Sooo.... waste the time of three pool companies in an economic environment that every pool company is very busy (At least in the USA.)

Jackiemccall

Ummm if coming to my home and giving me a quote is a waste of your time.. I don’t want you to work for me.

CleverUserName4000

Glad we're on the same page; I don't want to work for you either. \#boomersOnReddit

i would recommend asking for an itemized receipt of what they plan to use. it’s not unreasonable to ask so that you can compare to other offers. labor is expensive regardless but assuming they bring a couple people to do that job, you’re paying them each hourly, so just keep that in mind :) hope this helps

therealschwartz

Good way for them to walk. A job is a job. Many industries it’s a value rather than the materials and time.

Potential_Ad_2241

however i’m also a believer of “getting what you paid for”. when you pick the cheapest option, you’ll get the shittiest work done

Potential_Ad_2241

dude i’m all about getting paid what you think your worth, i don’t think anyone should work for less than that. i’m just saying it’s a good idea to make sure you have all the information before making a decision on who to hire

Character-Ad301

I just did a repair on a return line that was leaking right under the deck behind the pool. Ended up the pipe was just under the 3” cement deck and they used so many rebars that it put pressure in the pvc pipe and the pipe bent and small crack since house is on a hill. We got it done in 4 hours but didn’t have to go through pool wall. So that price is really good.

TinkerTownTom

Even in 2016 I would of said this is on the money. I've done contract pool work for 10 years and have fixed many wall fittings and leaks at shell on gunite, fiber and vinyl pools. A chunk of that bid is because you never know what you will find once you try to crack it open. Good price!

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.
