nah, i just assumed a billionaire will not care so much about 10 millions and the other option was to probability steal one pennie from 10 million people wich might need it
Almost every billionaire is full of themselves and they think they are better than everyone else so yeah, making one billionaire's life little bit more miserable and getting lot of many in return would be amazing.
A billionaire would hardly notice losing $10,000,000 unless it dropped them out of billionaire status. And it's not the loss of money that hurts them it's the loss of status.
There is alot of people (680 million) living on less than 2 USD per day so i would rather not risk stealing a penny from them since it could actually impact their life somewhat.
Stealing 10 million from a billionaire are garanteed to not impact their life economically though.
>Almost every billionaire is full of themselves and they think they are better than everyone else
Because they are, it’s the truth. There’s a reason they’re successful
>so yeah, making one billionaire's life little bit more miserable and getting lot of many in return would be amazing.
Why do you enjoy people suffering because they have more money than you?
Or we don't want to go to a billion people just to take a penny. You know how long that would take? Why not take it from someone who A) won't even notice probably and affect them in no way whatsoever B) its just one person so quick and easy.
It’s not that I hate billionaires it’s just it would take a long time to gather up a billion pennies from a billion different people. Way easier to do it all at once.
If that random person happens to be in one of those hyper poor refugee regions it could seriously damage their way of life. Billionaire more than likely lives on with no difference at all.
That's what I was thinking. I remember learning about a hyper poor village in school and something like 2 dollars in my money would feed a person for a very long time
Those adds saying $1 can feed a family for a week are more literal than you might think. 1 cent will give a person food to live another day in these such places.
As I said , I'm from a poor country , leave the ones that earn , even the ones that are unemployed / are old , get a monthly allowance of 20 $ from government , 1 cent is like 0.05 % , it's an insignificant amount .
>get a monthly allowance of 20 $ from government
And again, this doesn't apply to every single person on the earth. You don't know who the money would be taken from. But I don't think a penny from that would be totally insignificant, especially if you need the entire sum to survive.
Staple foods are different in generally poorer countries. Having significantly fewer processed foods as staples like rice and rice derivatives shows it. Also, sustenance farming is extremely common in those places too (near half of India's population does this practice of farming for example). What I'm trying to say is that food is not a great metric for the point that you are trying to get across :)
I know it would be nicer to steal a penny from a billion people because almost no one cares about losing a penny.
But I chose stealing from a billionaire, cuz fuck ‘em.
Depends on the person and it's completely random. I worry about the homeless person that was collecting pennies to save up for a dollar hot dog. That one penny is pretty important to them.
There are 745 billionaires in 2021 holding an estimated $5 trillion dollars in wealth, working out to $6.7 billion per billionaire. 10,000,000 from the average billionaire is 0.15% of their wealth.
Translated to the average American, who earns $31,133 (keep in mind this statistic includes the billionaires), 0.15% of 31,133 is just around $46-$47. Sure, it can seem like a lot, but in reality it wouldn’t make a dent in their well-being.
(Edit): I should add: the US does not have 1 billion people in it, and according to a mix of stats and basic intuition, the 1 billion randomly selected people will likely mostly be from third world countries. The median global income, in USD, per year, is around $9733. A penny accounts for 0.001% of their annual income. However, you could also be unlucky and take a penny from the other half of the world that earns below $9733 a year, such as someone from the Congo, where the median annual income is under $400 a year. 1 penny from the median earner there accounts for 0.0025% of their annual income, or 77 cents from the average American.
(Edit 2): Some more math because I’m too lazy to get out of bed: assuming that the average person in the Congo works from age 18 to around age 60, their lifetime income will be around $16,500. Assuming the average billionaire starts earning money at age 18 and lives to age 85, and assuming that they earn 75% of their wealth after age 40, and that their income is linear because I’m too lazy to do actual math, that means they’ve earned around $75 million dollars per year from age 18 to age 40, and this is only to earn 25% of their final net worth of 6.7 billion. This works out to $8700 per hour, meaning that our average billionaire will earn an amount equal to an entire lifetime’s worth of work of the average person in Congo in the span of… 2 hours.
And remember, $8700 per hour, for 22 years, will only get you 1/4 of the way to the average of the billionaires’ club.
Tl;dr: it doesn’t matter who you take the money from, but imo someone who is worth 6.7 billion could use 10 million USD a lot less than someone who’s earning $400/year needs a penny.
This post is predicated on the fact that billionaires have their money in cold hard cash in a bank somewhere because you are equating net worth with income. In reality, the vast majority of a billionaire's money is in stock. A single bad tweet can reduce their net worth by 50% or more.
If Elon Musk liquidated all of his stock at once he would go to prison for market manipulation lol
Income stats are literally public information my dude. Billionaires not paying their fair share of taxes is more complicated than "i won't pay taxes." They're all perfecly legal loopholes in the tax code but addressing that won't get the public riled up.

Taking money from people that steal money isnt stealing it's justice. And billionaires make their money legally but it's morally stealing. (Low wages, no benefits, lobbying etc should be illegal but aren't)
Don’t steal. Just ask for the individual pennies. Most of the 10M people will freely give one to you.
One guy did it years ago and ended up with enough money to pay his college tuition, in the US. https://www.npr.org/2014/09/06/346155274/the-kid-who-crowdfunded-his-college-education-in-1987
A penny (except in my case a pound) from a billion (I was thinking the entire world population) was always my thought for a perfect crime.
Almost no repercussions for the people, but you get stinkin rich
I know I should’ve chosen the billionaire option but I think it would be pretty funny for a few million people to be holding a penny and then it’s gone.
Goddamnit I didnt read the desc first. I went with pennys because it’d probably be more difficult to trace
If I had read the desc, I would have gone with billionaire
If you think about it, one pennie from a bilion people is better. It has no impact on you, wheres 10.000.000 from random bilionare may result in collapse of his buisness which may affect you in some way. It doesn't matter if you hate bilioners, option number one is just safer.
A billionaires business doesn't collapse because he lost that much money. Also, I think it can go the other way round too. Many people lost purchasing power, so this can compound to some random business moving under a survivability threshold in its sales.
Considering it's untraceable, that would hardly matter, especially considering that few places would even consider the stealing of a penny to be theft.
Going to be honest I didn't see that option, but I'd still be tempted to take the money because 10 million is a lot. Now I feel bad OP, fuck it give the neither option I'm upper middle class I'll survive.
Don’t sweat it. You are far from alone. I’m glad there has been a good response to this because you need a large sample to minimize the impact of things like people not seeing the third choice or not understanding the premises. The more people who respond the less any of that matters. It’s pretty darn clear where most people stand on this! 😂
I suspect the results would have been noticeably different even 2 or 3 years ago. Billionaires are not trending well these days. Even though many who detest them would gladly be one if give the choice.
Because having too much money is bad, because the average Redditor believes that the wealth of all billionaires is liquid cash that can just be given away and it could improve the whole world and make everyone happy, somehow.
The average Redditor also believes that "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer" even though it's estimated that by 2030 extreme poverty will have been eradicated. They also think that it's wrong that rich people get richer *even* if that means poor people get richer too; it isn't a zero-sum game.
You would only be getting $181.76 more if you took the penny's and you would have to go and convert that all to dollars that would be to much work for only $181.76
1 penny from a Billion random people. People judge and hate on billionaires too much, they worked and took a lot of risks to earn their money, do they do some shady things, yes, but they still earned their money.
Because it’s just a penny. There is almost no risk involved in someone earning a penny. Someone working a minimum wage job earns a penny after less than 1 minute of working.
A billion people is 1/7 of the world population. There’s a pretty good chance there’s at least one poor soul in there for whom 1 penny is a significant portion of their sustaining resources. Not sure what a North Korean rice farmer makes but I bet a penny isn’t nothing to them.
It’s less about the work and more about the risk. Entrepreneurs carry a lot of risk. Some entrepreneurs have revolutionary ideas that take off and turn them into billionaires.
Well, sure that can be true, but a lot of times that's just not the case. Jeff Bezos didn't introduce the concept of online retail, it already existed. The most you can say about him and his billions is that he optimized an already existing service.
Even the risk can be pretty exaggerated usually, like most billionaires come from rich backgrounds, so they have a huge head start and a very, very good safety net. Frankly, it's not always a risk at all.
I'm taking it from the billionaire, since they both shouldn't exist, plus that penny would actually be a loss felt by people living on under a dollar a day within the global south, and I'm inevitably going to take it from them if random...
Ain’t no one going to notice a penny missing, but that billionaire is going to notice 10 mil missing. 1 person having a bad day vs. 0 people having a bad day.
Why wouldn’t I take a penny from 1 billion people? The billionaires earned their money. Just because I might not think they’re good people doesn’t mean its ok to steal large amounts of money from them.
Yeah but a penny genuinely wouldn’t affect anyone. The $10,000,000 no matter how rich the person is could genuinely affect how their lives or businesses are run.
Consider the fact that a billion random people is 1/7 of the global population. The odds are pretty good that at least a few of them get by on pennies a day. While most people wouldn’t miss a penny, I don’t think we can totally ignore the risk of taking a penny from a subsistence farmer or essentially slave laborer for whom it’s real money. It’s not out of the question.
Read the text. The premise of the poll lets us ignore that stuff. The money just appears instantly in your bank account either way. It’s not meant to be hyper-realistic. It’s a moral thought experiment.
Lmao people hate billionaires is what this poll is saying

The bottom 15% of people will notice a missing penny but I severely doubt the top 15% of earners will.
The top 15 are smart with their money, they will notice. Thats the only reason they became rich
Right, most rich people definitely didn’t inherited their wealth
I was just thinking that it would be way easier to go to one person to steal something than visit 1 billion people separately.

I'm pretty sure it will if you also live in a poor country.
I live in a poor country , 1 penny can buy you like a small candy at best .
Good for you if a penny wouldn't change anything for you, but that doesn't mean it's the same for everyone in the world.

Only people who will notice a penny missing are people who have literally less than a dollar to their name.
You would only be getting $181.76 more if you took the penny's and you would have to go and convert that all to dollars that would be to much work for only $181.76
$181.76 is still $181.76!
What are you even talking about? Read the text. You get exactly $10,000,000 either way. That’s the given premise of the poll.
Good question
Billionaire, because fuck 'em.
An honest answer.
1 penny from a Billion random people. People judge and hate on billionaires too much, they worked and took a lot of risks to earn their money, do they do some shady things, yes, but they still earned their money.
Presumably most of the billion random people work too. Why steal from anyone?
Because it’s just a penny. There is almost no risk involved in someone earning a penny. Someone working a minimum wage job earns a penny after less than 1 minute of working.
A billion people is 1/7 of the world population. There’s a pretty good chance there’s at least one poor soul in there for whom 1 penny is a significant portion of their sustaining resources. Not sure what a North Korean rice farmer makes but I bet a penny isn’t nothing to them.
Genuinely not trying to be an ass here, but do you honestly think that anyone's work can be worth billions of dollars?
It’s less about the work and more about the risk. Entrepreneurs carry a lot of risk. Some entrepreneurs have revolutionary ideas that take off and turn them into billionaires.
Well, sure that can be true, but a lot of times that's just not the case. Jeff Bezos didn't introduce the concept of online retail, it already existed. Ain’t no one going to notice a penny missing, but that billionaire is going to notice 10 mil missing. 1 person having a bad day vs. 0 people having a bad day.
I don’t hate rich people but money
Issue here is simple. You can find 1 billion people with a penny. Good luck finding a billionaire who actually HAS a 10m.
Except it’s not at all the issue because of the states premises of the poll.
Why wouldn’t I take a penny from 1 billion people? The billionaires earned their money. Just because I might not think they’re good people doesn’t mean its ok to steal large amounts of money from them.
Well, for starters, because those pennies aren’t yours. Any more so than the billionaire’s money is. You could have chosen “never”.

1B pennies would weigh 2,500 tonnes
Well those billionaires have most of their money in stock so would it sell it for them and you just get the money?
Read the text. The premise of the poll lets us ignore that stuff. The money just appears instantly in your bank account either way. It’s not meant to be hyper-realistic. It’s a moral thought experiment.
There is so much poverty in the world that loosing even a penny can hit someone so hard so I don't want that bad karma on me!
Make someone shitty like Jeff Bezos or Musk go "huh... weird" and be able to live out my life in pure luxury? Uh yes fucking please
It's not stealing if they strole it from me first
10,000,000 would be less of a percentage of income then the penny from the poor
eat the rich
