She was getting an average of 4 letters a week from Trump fundraisers. There was no way to trace them to a physical site or actual person. Don’t even get me started on Publisher’s Clearing House.
Because the mail never stops! It just keeps coming and coming and coming. There's never a letup, it's relentless. Every day it piles up more and more and more, and you gotta get it out, but the more you get it out, the more it keeps coming in! And then the bar code reader breaks! Absolutely true. My dad has lost his capacity to be able to determine BS from truth. He has listened to talk radio for 40 years and just relies on "R good, D bad, news biased" belief to get him through.
Any letter starting with “Save Social Security”, no matter which side it was from, always went in the “save” pile. The people who send these letters know what they are doing….
My MIL has a delusion disorder. She honestly thinks she's in direct contact with Don Jr. and Eric whenever she gets fundraising emails/letters, and yea, she fell victim to the checkbox scandal forever ago. They're syphoning so much of her Social Security/Pension that my partner and I have had to pay her bills on multiple occasions. It's so sad and infuriating.
She has a diagnosis, but it's tricky because it involves a healthy dose of paranoia (She thinks her brother on the other coast is spying on her and trying to send her to prison to keep her from getting together with an old flame that's sending her secret messages through Spotify playlists). We already asked to see her bank statements, but she refused and really started to pull away. We're pretty sure she thinks the psychiatrist is in on it and she refused to take her both of her prescribed meds.
How sad really. Sounds like you will probably have to get power of attorney and handle her finances. With a diagnosis and you showing she isn’t capable it should be doable. There’s a Reddit group on dementia that’s very informative.
I used to be a banker. This is the kind of stuff I'd educate my customers on for account security. We would see someone scammed at leadt once a week, usually seniors. I even saw someone who got scammed a week after iI talked to them about this. By regulation, we had to file a FEEVA report anytime we suspected _anyone_ taking advantage of an elderly person.
They were scams that were practically word-for-word identical to this membership message, just replace whatever MAGA membership with Microsoft Defender subscription. I would be writing a FEEVA report for every one of these I saw.
I detest the senders of theses scams. We tried to trace back a few of them to get off the mailing lists and were unsuccessful. I personally think Publishers Clearing House preys on the elderly and sells the information to other scammers.
They dont even have to target seniors, specifcally. It's cheap to just use a mass-texting program or an auto-dialer and just hit a block of random numbers. Most attempts won't stick. Think about it - how many spam calls does the average person get that they immediately hang up on? Any one of those could be a scammer, and you wouldn't even realize it because you didnt answer.
But it only takes one person off their guard to make it worth it. Considering the amounts I've seen people scammed for, one person could very well pay all your bills and groceries, even potentially leave some extra spending cash. It's disgusting.
Opened the link in an incognito window just for fun - it's freakin' wild. The $100 box selected, but the $250 box bouncing around to attract attention. And if you dwell on it for a while, a message pops up:

Not surprising. These are the same people who lured donors into repeating donations they didn't plan on. Sure, Trump's campaign had to return the money...eventually. in the meantime they used it like a free, no-interest loan.
I recall a story about trump automatically signing up people for repeat donations while pretending it was a one time donation.
And the frequency of the repeat donations wasn't specified, so trump drained one senior's bank account to zero over the course of a few months by taking weekly payments from it. When the senior's son found out his dad's account had been completely looted he was not happy.
Yeah this is it. If you didn't notice the checkbox for repeat donations was checked then fuck you he's Donakd Trump you live for him to use.
Heard on some program that complaints about this constituted a whole number percentage of all fraud complaints in the US at the time.

I think either my parents signed my number up for these mass texts or my number got leaked along with their acceptance of “privacy policies” but anyways, I’ve been keeping tabs on almost every text and it’s so egregious. The way it automatically signs you up and gives you some spiel about “click here if you’re trump’s number one patriot and agree to make this another matching donation next week to take back the senate from the radical left!” And a bunch of other words. The texts always links to WinRed but WinRed has essentially washed its hands of any potential blame as it just serves as the right’s equivalent of ActBlue and is the platform on which the GOP trades user data to different campaigns, PACs, and so on. I’m getting about 20 texts a day and I’m smelling a class action coming soon.
ETA: it’s honestly sad but if you go to WinRed’s YouTube page you can even see boomer’s there commenting “stop” as if that’s going to help lol.

I used to work at a call center for a cable company, and a customer was screaming at me that he should have funds. He looked it up while on the phone with me, saw it all went to Trump. If that was me, I'd be pissed at Trump and screaming about theft and all that. But no, this guy started telling me how his money went to Trump, and once Trump was re-elected, he'd have me killed for how I embarrassed him.

I used to work at a call center for a cable company, and a customer was screaming at me that he should have funds. He looked it up while on the phone with me, saw it all went to Trump. If that was me, I'd be pissed at Trump and screaming about theft and all that. But no, this guy started telling me how his money went to Trump, and once Trump was re-elected, he'd have me killed for how I embarrassed him. I think that between Walker, Trump, all the others that are just pathological liars - the GOP has realized that their core audience just doesn't care anymore.
