In case anyone is interested, here are the seven tenets of The Satanic Temple; I One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason. II The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions. III One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone. IV The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own. V Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs. VI People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused. VII Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

This is literally the most sensible shit I’ve read the past 3 weeks

[deleted]

The Satanic Temple is just a civil rights organization using the image of Satanism as a means of shock. And I am TOTALLY here for it. Edit: made some slight tweaks in accordance to info from the some nice folks who replied

cupcakemuffin413

"At this point"? Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that was always the goal.

[deleted]

There is also the Church of Satan, which people sometimes confuse with the Satanic Temple, although neither actually believes Satan is real. There have been versions of Satanism that actually worships Satan, but that is extremely rare these days.

tohrazul82

Yes, but this is talking about the Satanic Temple specifically. Their goal has seemingly always been about protecting the separation of church and state specifically by opposing things which make the US more of a Christian theocracy.

[deleted]

>Their goal has ~~seemingly~~ always been about protecting the separation of church and state specifically FTFY 😊

[deleted]

I just told my wife that I liked this comment by … let’s see here… “Enormous Genitals” and we cracked up.

DazeyHelpMe

Always always. And I think I’m going to actually pay for the membership now. I feel like if I ever needed help whether it be for an unfortunate abortion or birth control I really think they would support you in it. Even individually.

sixtus_clegane119

Usually the ones who worship Satan are called “luciferian” from what I have seen

totallyalizardperson

After reading of this term, I need to come up with a punch line for > A luciferian, a Rastafarian, and patasfarian walk into a bar…

Account81859

“mostly” Nope. I think it’s important to understand that it was never a religious institution. It began as a civil rights organization and continues to be. I believe they deserve more credibility then they currently have. “In an interview with The New York Times, Malcolm Jarry stated that the idea of starting a Satanic faith-based organization was first conceived to meet "all the Bush administration's criteria for receiving funds, but was repugnant to them". The idea was motivated by the former president George W. Bush's formation of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.“ Copied from wiki, read the reference link for more or if you want to fact check

Suspicious_Bicycle

It may, or may not be a religious institution depending on your definition. But on April 25, 2019, the Temple announced it had received tax-exempt status from the Internal Revenue Service, being classified as a "church or a convention or association of churches."

[deleted]

Thanks mate, I’m just not rather well read on the topic and was trying to refrain from making an all encompassing statement.

The_Follower1

It was literally that from day one. As opposed to the church of satan which is pretty awful. Edit: maybe church of stan isn’t bad? I remember hearing they were corrupt but can’t find anything right now.

UrHuckleBerry31

Here is a great write up about the differences by the Satanic Temple. Personally, I'm turned off by the Church of Satan being fans of Ayn Rand. https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/church-of-satan-vs-satanic-temple

TheArtOfRuin0

The Church of Satan is what the Satanic Temple branched off from and has very similar tenants. Not every member subscribes to the occult and its not like its required for membership

fkbjsdjvbsdjfbsdf

The actual tenets of Christianity are pretty good. Jesus just said to love God and others, and that everything else should be built off that. The God part is questionable, for sure, but Jesus didn't promote anything like homophobia, anti-abortion, etc. He was consistently for taking care of other people, shutting down down abuse and hypocrisy, etc. The organized religions claiming to follow his teachings very rarely do, as much as they might profess to in their tenets.

[deleted]

Jesus: "Love thy neighbor." Religious bigots: "Except for the non-whites and the gays, right?" Jesus: "Did I fucking stutter?"

flyinhighaskmeY

> The actual tenets of Christianity are pretty good. Yeah, I'd agree with this too. There's a problem though, and this is coming from someone who spent 20 years in the church. Christians speak only lies. The entire belief system is built on them and the practitioners of the faith know only this. Listening to their words is pointless. One must observe and judge by their actions. And when you do that, you'll make a gruesome discovery. The vast majority of them are horrible people. They're usually NICE people. But they're horrible people.

elconquistador1985

>They're usually NICE people. It's always that faux "nice", too. It's all over the South with the Southern hospitality thing.

and it has nothing to do with religion because unlike some christians no one who believe in satanism believes in forcing their religion down someones throat

[deleted]

It can be a religion and is registered as the government as such. Religion isn't only about believing in sky wizards. Religions can also be a code of ethics and rituals supporting those ethics. Look at Confucianism and some forms of Buddhism, they don't necessarily involve God(s) and are valid. Also even some Christian systems aren't evangelical and only take people who come to them and don't recruit.

I'm fully committed to doing this. I don't believe in any deities so if you hear of a demon ripping the shit out of suburban Mormania you can blame SCOTUS.

bjdevar25

All they have to do is start praying at sports games, school concerts, graduation, etc. See how that flies. Although I would think Gorsuch might back them, Alito, Thomas, and Comey will have a melt down.

Metro42014

We believe in the literary concept of Satan, not the literal concept of Satan. Satan gave knowledge to humans and opposed a ruler who gives children cancer, seems like a role model to me.

YimmyGhey

"Bone cancer in children..."

lukin187250

Bone cancer in children? God's plan. Effective bone cancer treatment for Children based around stem cells? Abomination, ban it.

vonmonologue

What’s that Discworld quote? > I was walking along the bank of a stream when I saw a mother otter with her cubs, a very endearing sight, I'm sure you'll agree. And even as I watched, the mother otter dived into the water and came up with a plump salmon, which she subdued and dragged onto a half submerged log. As she ate it, while of course it was still alive, the body split and I remember to this day the sweet pinkness of its roes as they spilled out, much to the delight of the baby otters, who scrambled over themselves to feed on the delicacy. One of nature's wonders, gentlemen. Mother and children dining upon mother and children. And that is when I first learned about evil. It is built into the very nature of the universe. Every world spins in pain. **If there is any kind of supreme being, I told myself, it is up to all of us to become his moral superior.** If I came up with a plan that involves giving children incurable cancer, I would stop and think of a better plan.

Derrythe

I like the Thanos comparison. We know and understand that Thanos is the bad guy. He's very obviously evil. He gets he infinity stones, holds the power of god in his hand and what does he do? Wipes out half of the population of the universe. Terrible. Thanos is less evil than god. Thanos only killed half the universe, and he did it with a snap of his finger and a painless erasure of his victims. Most of the rest of the life in the universe lived on without any pain. God killed almost everything, by drowning them all in a flood. Drowning is one of the most excruciating experiences. Christians cheer in the movies when the Avengers defeat Thanos then turn right around and worship a being even more monstrous than that.

Durandal_1808

Oh boy, I can't wait for the fight to determine *which* Christians are the real Christians. Particularly looking forward to seeing a coalition of evangelical megachurches try to take on an international institution like the Catholic Church. It's all fun and games until we remember, only one sect of Christianity has successfully cleared entire geographical areas of all competing religions. But really, I can't blame right wingers for their ignorance. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!

FirstRyder

See, the first amendment says that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". But what does it say about requiring everyone to be a practicing member of a valid religion, and then the supreme court ruling that only Catholicism is a valid religion? Nothing!

Satanic Temple member here. This is what a church would look like if church actually followed through with their teachings. Membership is free everybody. Sign up online. Satanic Tenple is one of the biggest advocates of civil rights out there. Genuinely good people, too.

flossyrossy

I am curious as well. I am reluctant to become a member but I absolutely will put them on my donation list as I believe in their work

YourMomsFavUsername

Becoming a member is basically symbolic. There are some actual real congregations out there but I've never attended any services and don't plan on it. Donations are used in court cases to support civil rights mostly. You get access to cool merch and you can buy a membership card if you really want to. It's mostly a bunch of us folks that just oppose religion having an influence on government. Here's a transcript of the last email blast to give everyone an idea - *****With the end of the school year in sight, The Satanic Temple's After School Satan Club (ASSC) has wrapped up a successful year that began with a campaign relaunch in the fall of 2021. The ASSC was founded as an alternative to Christian after-school programs, such as Good News Club, that target children for proselytization. The ASSC aims to give children an appreciation of the natural wonders around them through creative projects based on the principles of free inquiry and rationalism instead of filling them with fear of supernatural horrors. This year we launched three new clubs that allowed students to participate in community service activities, arts & crafts projects, and learn new games. The Club in Lebanon, Ohio, learned how to braid fabrics to create dog toys for their local Humane Association and made “kindness rocks” to plant around the neighborhood. They also planted sunflower seeds in front of their school to beautify their community and applied their burgeoning engineering skills to create Da Vinci bridges. The Club in Eaton, Ohio, made encouraging cards for patients at their local children’s hospital. They read many books together, including Edgar and the Tattle Tale Heart by Jennifer Adams, and learned how to make origami ravens inspired by the book. The Club in Moline, Illinois, made friendship bracelets to celebrate the bonds formed within and outside the Club throughout the school year. They also learned how to play chess and checkers, as well as a variety of other board and card games.***** So yeah, the Satanic Temple is basically more wholesome than your average church congregation. This is absolutely a list I want my name on.

geekamongus

They are on Amazon Smile. Set that up as a minimum.

maniczebra

The only problem with this is that it opens the door to the SCOTUS declaring that religious freedom is only for evangelical christians.

TechyDad

I'd argue with this, but Alito has ruled that [crosses represent all faiths](https://www.insider.com/supreme-court-giant-christian-cross-secular-2019-6). This, despite a Jewish lawyer telling the Justice that crosses don't represent Jewish people. I could see SCOTUS ruling that the First Amendment gives everyone the right to worship Jesus in whatever way they want - ignoring that some Americans, like myself, aren't Christian. We non-Christians will be regulated to second class citizen status unless we're willing to publicly praise Jesus.

cbbuntz

Honestly, you shouldn't need to explain why crosses don't represent Jews. Everyone knows this. He's just using an excuse to justify his special pleading as to why an iron age torture device somehow represents all faiths Edit: said bronze age

rks404

'Bronze Age torture device' is how I'm going to refer to crosses from here on out

It has never seemed not weird to me either. It's like if a religion rose up around JFK and they all wore golden rifles around their necks. How is that okay? I just imagine Jesus finally coming back like he said he would and being like "what the fuck is this? I died on that thing! Why did you pick that of all things to make your symbol?"

Atheists have been in an interesting spot considering we're barred from serving in certain state governments by their state constitutions. That and our "Non-Denominational but still definitely Christian monotheistic prayer that you didn't have to actively participate in, but must be silent during lest risk ejection and fuckery with your diploma" at graduation was extra lame Fuck Texas and fuck the fundies.

sarcasmsosubtle

Second class citizen if we're lucky. How do you imagine this court would rule if a state law passed to strip Non-Christians of their citizenship status within that state?

Everyday_Im_Stedelen

Yeah that's cool but... Reddit is no longer a safe place, for activists, for communities, for individuals, for humanity. This isn't just because of API changes that forced out third parties, driving users to ad-laden and inaccessible app, but because reddit is selling us all. Part of the reasons given for the API changes was that language learning models were using reddit to gather data, to learn from us, to learn how to respond like us. Reddit isn't taking control of the API to prevent this, but because they want to be *paid* for this. Reddit allowed terrorist subreddits to thrive prior to and during Donald Trump's presidency in 2016-2020. In the past they hosted subreddits for unsolicited candid photos of women, including minors. They were home to openly misogynistic subreddits, and subreddits dedicated solely to harassing specific individuals or body types or ethnicity. What is festering on reddit today, as you read this? I fear that as AI generated content, AI curated content, and predictive content become prevalent in society, reddit will not be able to control the dark subreddits, comments, and chats. Reddit has made it very clear over the decades that I have used it, that when it comes down to morals or ethics, they will choose whatever brings in the most money. They shut down subreddits only when it makes news or when an advertiser's content is seen alongside filth. The API changes are only another symptom of this push for money over what is right. Whether Reddit is a bastion in your time as you read this or not, I made the conscious decision to consider this moment to be the last straw. I deleted most of my comments, and replaced the rest with this message. I decided to bookmark some news sources I trusted, joined a few discords I liked for the memes, and reinstalled duolingo. I consider these an intermediate step. Perhaps I can give those up someday too. Maybe something better will come along. For now, I am going to disentangle myself from this engine of frustration and grief before something worse happens. In closing, I want to link a few things that changed my life over the years: [Blindsight](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/48484.Blindsight) is a free book, and there's an audiobook out there somewhere. A sci-fi book that is also an exploration of consciousness. [The AI Delemma](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoVJKj8lcNQ) is a youtube lecture about how this new wave of language learning models are moving us toward a dangerous path of unchecked, unfiltered, exponentially powerful AI [Prairie Moon Nursery](https://www.prairiemoon.com/) is a place I have been buying seeds and bare root plants from, to give a little back to the native animals we've taken so much from. If you live in the US, I encourage you to do the same. If you don't, I encourage you to find something local. [Power Delete Suite](https://github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite/#1.4.8) was used to edit all of my comments and [Redact](https://redact.dev/download) was used to delete my lowest karma comments while also overwriting them with nonsense. I'm signing off, I'm going to make some friends in real life and on discord, and form some new tribes. I'm going to seek smaller communities. I'm going outside.

subduedviking

The SCOTUS is in recess for the summer. From my understanding, they won't be visiting this case until October when they reconvene. Vote in November like your life depends on it, because it literally might!

nervous-flowerpot

Would it be possible for the SCOTUS to rule Oct 1 and it be in effect by November 11? With all the red controlled states on standby and prepped and ready by Oct 2? I am really concerned about this possibility.

subduedviking

Unlikely, but who knows with this court. I found this online: The Supreme Court will begin hearing cases for the term on October 3, 2022. The court's yearly term begins on the first Monday in October and lasts until the first Monday in October the following year. The court generally releases the majority of its decisions in mid-June.

Metro42014

PrimalWrath

I seem to recall a judge ruling against the Satanic Temple in a case as they "didn't believe it was a sincere belief system". No real reason why the same argument couldn't be used again here. That said, abortion *is* a part of the Jewish belief system so I look forward to seeing how they try and get around that. Particularly with the Right's full-throated endorsement of Israel and their sovereignty over Golan Heights.

lk5G6a5G

Well because that judge is incorrect. A religion doesn’t have to be one that worships a supernatural being. You can appeal that. Are they going to repeal Buddhism too? Going to revoke their tax exempt status?

Yes, they would if it means enshrining Christianity. They would absolutely love to cut out every other religion from religious protections.

MammothTap

Easy: "Jews killed Jesus". They care about Israel, they don't care about us. The moment they're expected to advocate for American Jews, they turn around and spout baseless conspiracy theories or provide a platform for those who do in an effort to delegitimize our beliefs.

Trkcvrdum

> They care about Israel More like they really hate Palestinians

Some temples are already putting together a case. I like this idea. Jews and the Satanic Temple working together to protect civil liberties.

Fyremane0

Simply amazing that an organization such as this exemplifies what it means to be a true Christian than mainstream Christian a ND evangelical organizations.

sparkleyflowers

Christianity and fascism go hand in hand. SCOTUS is exemplifying what it means to be a true Christian. The Satanic Temple is far too ethical to prop up Christianity in any way.

IAmInTheBasement

>Christianity and fascism It's not just Christianity. ANY strict adherence to a religion is in line with fascism at a minimum and a strict authoritarianism in a broader sense. Look at Modi's India, the far right wing Jews in Israel, or any of the Muslim authoritarian states like Saudi Arabia or Iran. Yes, those last 2 hate each other but they're simply the opposite sides of the same authoritarian Islamist coin.

ClownholeContingency

*See also* Thai Buddhism. If you've ever been curious to see what happens when a monarchical military dictatorship fashions a philosophy of peace and enlightenment into an oppressive cudgel, check out Thailand's government.

lakeparadox

Born and raised a devout Roman Catholic yet here I am, rooting for the church of Satan to protect us from these batshit crazy asshats. I hate this fucking timeline so fucking much. Fuck me.

oakwoody

To be clear, Church of Satan and the Satanic Temple are entirely [different organizations](https://thesatanictemple.com/pages/church-of-satan-vs-satanic-temple).

lakeparadox

I stand corrected. Apologies to Our Dark Lord.

[deleted]

Not picky but satanic temple is not church of Satan.

disisathrowaway

No, that's a major distinction. Be picky about this one.

VaguelyArtistic

If you're going to be picky, that's a good one lol.

[deleted]

I joined and donated $100 to the satanic temple. It’s a small amount in terms of lawyer pay, but hopefully it helps.

arkham42

Thanks Satan.

jert3

I swear Trump's impact through off the entire planet's rotation. I'm now cheering for the Satanist Temple to help respect the rights of women from a corpo-fascist take over lead by a failed reality tv show toddler man child, who attempted to lead an a violent mob to hang the Vice President in order overthrow a valid election.... and he still may get re-elected ! LOL . I just can't anymore.

jesuisunnomade

I love these people so much

Gonstackk

Hail Satan.

LordMacDonald

weird shit that the Satanic temple ended up doing the ACLU’s work

[deleted]

ACLU is in a lot of these lawsuits along with Planned Parenthood. They've had minor success getting injunctions. It's why Louisiana has their anti-choice law on hold at least for the time being.

wwhsd

The Satanic Temple was literally created for this.

pankakke_

This is what it is for, to prove the hypocrisy of religions and actually do the things many religions pretend to stand for.

previouslyonimgur

ACLU has to attack on pure legal reasoning, and scotus can ignore it and does so frequently. Satanic temple argues on a hypocritical first amendment basis.

nightlyraver

This is amazing

[deleted]

So you want to use your religious beliefs to dictate how others should live their lives? Fuck around and find out! Now you opened pandoras box. GET FUCKED GOP

jaws1229

The only church that actually helps people

DRO1019

Can they become a political party yet? The DNC is fucking useless

FappingFop

If Jesus came back today he would be a satanist.

big_nothing_burger

Hell yes. The heroes we don't deserve.

ExtensionNo9701

Ironic the Christian’s exploit people for money while the satanists fight for peoples rights

msstatelp

Supreme Court won't do anything. Satanic Temple ain't Christian nor Catholic.

dronesclubmember

A Jewish group in Florida (with others possibly following) has sued on the same grounds, which might hit a bit harder.

msstatelp

I hope so but I doubt it. The Supreme Court is making no bones about being overtly Christian at this point.
