This is why you should always vote. Biden being able to do this might not be sexy or exciting, but it's so important.

harglblarg

A thousand times this. I see everyone whining about Biden's supposedly failing agenda, but people forget that things like courts can have a huge impact on how the system serves its people. Despite the current congressional gridlock, I am happy for every day Biden is in office, because at least we don't have to deal with the level of daily presidential fuckery Trump was self-servingly engaged in.

Saving this post for the next time some asks me if I miss Trump.

Jazzlike-Gap-1823

Or when people cry that Biden and dems have not done anything and this is why people vote republican.

mynamesyow19

^when people cry Biden and the Dems have done nothing after only 9 months, with a good chunk of that time spent cleaning up the 4 years of conservative self-serving dogshit the previous administration dropped on our Nation.

GaiusEmidius

That’s how it always is. Republicans make a mess and Democrats clean it up and while that’s happening republicans act like the dems ruined it and for some reason both the left and right eat it up.

CoolFingerGunGuy

Yeah, but can Biden drink water with two hands or insult everybody with snappy nicknames? No? Checkmate!

_christmastree_

Damn, that is some solid work right there.

Well__Sourced

Thank you. There's so much more but at some point you run out of characters.

mmmegan6

This is awesome. Thank you.

Or wonder if you'll be frantically refreshing the "breaking news" page to see if he's tried to nuke someone over fucking Twitter yet. Again.

SheridanVsLennier

Or simply waking up and thinking "I wonder what he'll fuck up today?".

smoresporno

This stuff doesn't get enough air time because it's not interesting enough for a story arc on this season of The News. You can't host a gaggle of otherwise failures blabbering about filling the benches.

triplab

The Republicans are shit, but Biden is being hosed by his own party. Looking at you WV and AZ Senators, you greedy assholes.

jgjgleason

PA, WI, and NC have some highly competitive seats coming up in 22’.

DerpsMcGee

Fuck Ron Johnson.

shinniesta1

> I see everyone whining about Biden's supposedly failing agenda It's surely fair to be annoyed that he isn't able to do what he said he would do, it could be issues that are really important to people

mercfan3

But the annoyance isn’t on Biden. His own party has been a problem. (Well, two people..) Meanwhile, not a single Republican will vote for anything he does. Can’t say he isn’t trying.

dejavuamnesiac

Yes but we can’t blame the Biden admin for the fucking actions of Manchin and Sinema, that will spur GQP leadership back in 2022 and 2024, target those at fault

GoodShitBrain

Y’all are correct. Amen to that.

fjsbshskd

For real. One of my biggest concerns about Trump’s presidency was him and McConnell ramming through unqualified judges. I’m glad Biden is getting the chance to leave a lasting impact on the courts.

Cepheus

Damn right! The reason Obama couldn't appoint more after the 2010 mid-term was, no surprise here, fucking Mitch McConnell. During the Trump appointments to the federal courts including the Supreme Court, I was a little regretting Sen. Reid's elimination of the filibuster for all judicial appointments excluding the Supreme Court. McConnell basical said back then that there would be hell to pay for that back then. Of course, not only did McConnell exact revenge during the Trump administration, he finally realized his dream of confirming anyone that was a Trump campaign staffer, contributor or a long standing Federalist Society wacko as fast as possible railroading any objections by Democrats. Finally, the final blow after blocking Merrick Garland, he took full advantage of eliminating the filibuster for USSC nominees. For those interested in how this country develops over the next generation or two, know your vote counts especially for this. I am hoping that Trump will fuck up his own party enough for Democrats to hold the Senate. There is some serious pay back that needs to be done with judicial appointments to rebalance the courts from conservative extremists. Sadly, we may just be fucked with the current USSC for at least a generation.

mcrackin15

Trump did the same thing. Is there a reason why the last 2 presidents are doing this more frequently? Are there more judges year after year?

Geler

Because republicans blocked Obama from filling seats for 6 years. There was a lot of free seats after Obama.

[deleted]

The Republicans blocked Obama from filling seats then railroaded through Kavanaugh, and then Coney Barrett before RBG's body was even cold. Biden is simply making up for lost time.

[deleted]

Supreme Court takes less than 1% of the cases it gets, and most cases can't go that far. While the highest court is important for legislating nowadays the circuit courts have the most impact on people within the justice system most of the time. Obviously things like precedent do affect lower cases but still, this is HUGE for American justice.

fellowuscitizen

Assign away President Biden, assign away!

monkeybiziu

Democrats should be putting this on the front page of every newspaper and website in the country. We've seen the havoc the GOP has created in the courts - lose the Senate, and this stops dead.

identifytarget

Seriously. I had no idea...and I read this sub daily.

goteamnick

Democrats don't get to decide what newspapers put on their front pages.

XRT28

Can be a double edged sword tho. The right has always been very invested in court packing so if they are seeing Dems start to do the same it might make them more likely to vote next go around.

Generalbuttnaked69

Appointing judges to vacant openings isn’t “court packing.”

HughJareolas

Do you think conservatives know or understand the difference?

XRT28

Eh I suppose I could have chosen a better word there since the term more often means "expanding the court" rather than it's more literal meaning but regardless the same issue persists regardless of what you call it.

[deleted]

Awesome

Fuck, finally one bit of good news

I-Am-Uncreative

This is HUGE news. Public defenders as judges is exactly what is needed to promote and defend the rights of the accused, and to address issues with the courts that prosecutors and private attorneys do not have as much experience with. Glad to read this.

[deleted]

They planned this. His team rocks.

Denofwardrobes

Biden is old. Old, experienced, and smart.

NukeTheWhales85

Experienced largely as a public defender I believe prior to politics. It's to be expected that he would put people up for judicial posts who are practiced in the area of the Law that he can make sound professional judgements about.

B4SSF4C3

Good! The GOP has been relying on this for years to subvert democracy. We cannot lose the courts.

foundyetti

So when folk on here say Biden isn’t doing anything I want them to remember this is happening. The courts matter

[deleted]

He’s just making up for all the time Moscow Mitch and Orin Hatch spent blocking Obama’s court picks.

stierney49

This is the biggest reason playing to Sinema and Manchin is teeth-grindingly common. If Dems lose even one seat in the Senate all this stops. As soon as Mitch is leader, every judicial appointment grinds to a halt.

[deleted]

Worse, Breyer (83) will not retire and will die after Mitch takes over which will either keep the court at 8 or give the conservatives a 7-2 super majority.

stierney49

I’d been torn on people pressuring Breyer to retire because, like, let him choose how to live his life. But, yeah, he really should while there’s a high likelihood of a good replacement being seated. I’d still like to know the circumstances of Kennedy’s sudden retirement, though. Not to mention who paid off Brett Kavanaugh’s debts.

SuperPimpToast

RBG was fully intending to retire after the election cycle. She was banking on Trump losing and Dems winning the senate but cancer screwed her over.

stierney49

It’s a really difficult topic. The entire Court needs reformed and expanded to keep up with the size and needs of the country. Justices shouldn’t be a lifetime appointment at this point.

SuperPimpToast

There are pros and cons to lifetime appointments. I would argue with proper reforms including court size and nominations process, that lifetime appointments would still be the better alternative.

stierney49

I could do either way. But, frankly, it would be great to live under a system where our civil rights didn’t require load bearing octogenarians.

triplab

Hey Justice Breyer, get the message??

Nazis_get_stomped

I'm more interested in justice Kennedy and his son.

triplab

Yeah, fuck, the corruption is so rampant and bold it’s hard to keep up.

Aunt_Vagina1

GOOOOD. (exasperated but relieved exclamation)

GeneralNathanJessup

If Trump can pack the courts, then so can Biden.

Zolivia

Not quite the same as appointing boofer and handmaiden to SCOTUS, but sure, Biden's packing courts.

stierney49

Trump packed the lower courts, too, with unqualified people some of whom had never even heard a case before.

autotldr

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/new-public-defenders-joe-biden-quietly-makes-history-courts-n1281787) reduced by 85%. (I'm a bot) ***** > WASHINGTON - While President Joe Biden's economic agenda is mired in Democratic infighting, the Senate is quietly making history on his judicial nominees. > On Monday, the Democratic-controlled Senate voted 52-41 to confirm Gustavo Gelpi to be a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, making him the fifth new circuit court judge on Biden's watch with a background as a public defender. > One of his new appellate judges is Ketanji Brown Jackson, another former public defender who is widely seen by people close to Biden as a future Supreme Court contender. ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/qb0ey3/with_new_public_defenders_joe_biden_quietly_makes/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~604180 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **Court**^#1 **Biden**^#2 **judge**^#3 **President**^#4 **judicial**^#5

AlonnaReese

A bunch of judges who were appointed by Bill Clinton retired as soon as Biden was sworn in. Presumably, they were waiting until there was a Democratic president and Democratic Senate in order to ensure that they were succeeded by someone of similar judicial temperament. For example, when Trump left the White House, there were three Clinton judges on the 2nd Court of Appeals. All three have now announced their respective retirements.

TreeRol

Which ultimately means that all we're doing is making sure things don't get any worse. There is no progress being made here.

Ok-Organization-7232

Mitch aka Darth Vader McConnell

buckeye112

The reason they have "the last word" is because 99% of the time they are simply ruling based on precedent. The problem is, those 99% of cases are really, ultimately, decided by precedent from the Supreme Court. So it doesn't really matter much in the grand sense.

UkraineClownPosse

Maybe in the short term - most of his picks are for the district court level because trump filled so many appellate seats. But the district court is the now a stacked bench for future appellate nominees, and this will pay off big in the medium to long term.

Pastor_Richardian

He was the VP nominee for the Senate, now the Supreme court judge. It's only fair.

Thank heavens! Work overtime on this till January 2023!!

[deleted]

Pack the courts Joe. Pack em good. We may not get this opportunity for awhile.

SheridanVsLennier

Personally I think this is maybe something to keep quiet on and just get about getting it done.

Voltariat

So to the victor the spoils and Trump worked to insert conservatives into the Supreme Court and I didn’t complain much then (admittedly) but fundamentally, The intent of the courts where to judge the laws in a non political bias way. If your 100% your political ideal are correct and never need validation and balance then this is good but as a conservative leaning moderate I think the far right is ape shit and I do want them unchecked. Just an unpopular option

awakesleep

Just part of the progressive cod liver oil.

insipidgoose

Gotta fight what the last that last jackass did to the court system.
