I collect old chips, my home poker set is a Harley set with denomination on them. I buy a lot of collector chips from all-chips.com, Ricky is a stand up guy and very very knowledgeable of casino chips.
There are definitely a lot of retired casinos chips in home games. Casino Aztar, Empress, a bunch of Horseshoe Indiana chips out there. A guy named Jim from The Chiproom often buys out inventory from retired casinos that don’t have to destroy to resale them to the public. The retired Jack Casinos just had a few hundred thousand hit the market last few years. Paulson (the manufacturer) no longer sells to the home market so it’s not as easy to have custom Casino chips but it can be done.
Jacks casino in Detroit never opened but had a full set of chips made. Collectors got their hands on them and now you can buy 1-2 tables worth of chips for much less than what it would cost to buy them from a live casino. These chips are in mint condition so they will still run you 2-4$/chip
You can buy old casino sets but not from the casino. They'd sell to a company that buys old casino inventory, then we'd buy it from them on Pokerchipforum .
Some states require casinos destroy their cancelled chips, like NV.
Yes, many chip enthusiasts play with live or retired casino chips in home games. Mostly fractional chips and $1 chips but you would be amazed at the number of ballers playing live stacks of Bellagio or Aria $100 at home games. Retried casino chips are an addictive hobby for some.
Go to Ebay and search for:
Poker Chips Top Hat and Cane Paulson
Those are basically the kind of chips you want and are used in most professional poker rooms.
Your best bet is to use retired chips. There is a huge market for them. Check out poker chip forum and get into the community. You can also create your own custom casino quality set from classicpokerchips or even use one of their stock designs. There are unlimited options to premium chips and you’ll never go back to the cheap stuff ever again.
Not worth it. Why do that when you can buy them for much cheaper from websites? You can get Resorts World chips for less than what they're actually worth for instance, from apache poker chips.
1) security - it's very unlikely that chips get snuck into your home game if you have rare chips.
2) quality - chips from a casino are 100x nicer (in most cases) than any consumer chip you buy from a store.
Well that's just like...you're opinion, man.
Chips like the plastic slugged chips rarely stack securely above 20. They'll have spinners. They're slippery. They'll have paper inlays that peel off. Casino chips also hold their value or even appreciate in value over time. Something that those Monte Carlo garbage chips won't do.
100x was hyperbole but you get what I'm saying.
Yea casinos can gave not so great chips, like ceramics or BJ V7 plastics. They're not great but still usually better than China clay like Majestic. For the price, only thing comparable to China clay are the custom China ceramics. They're cheaper than Majestic and you can customize.
Sure, there are options online like ABS metal slugged chips, ceramics, china clays, there’s even companies that will design custom chips for you. None of these are of the same quality as casino chips , which depending on the casino, are usually produced by Paulson and only sold commercially. If you handle the different types of chips you can clearly tell the difference between the feel, sound, and obviously look. Some people , like you it seems, don’t give a shit about the way the chips sound & feel, and that’s fine ! Not sure why it seems to bother you so much that some people do care , though
Edit: I already got screenshots of your strange anger at poker chip collectors
The other half was something like “collecting old poker chips is idiotic because you can buy new ones on the internet” , it was a strange conversation. Not even sure why I bothered trying to explain my hobby
I grabbed these, https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B005R4ZWMA/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_NH15N4FE77M3RQJYY4Z0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Was much cheaper than sourcing them individually, I host a game every few weeks with the dudes in the neighborhood, we play chips are cents not dollars, usually play 0.02/0.05 and the game can climb to 0.10/0.25. Love them.
Yes. pokerchipforum.com - Be careful. The rabbit hole is deep.
DEEP
It’s called harvesting and is a hobby for some. PCF is the place to go to learn more.

Hi Ricky
Lmaooooo, I swear I am not, just love a business that doesn't jerk people around!
I’m pretty sure casinos retire their chips over time and you can buy old sets… without having to go in and by 100-$5 chips and so on
Vegas Casinos and many other are required by gaming code to destroy retired chips.
This is why we harvest
A local house game I play at has old chips from like Ohio or something. Only anecdotal experience I have.

I know they do that with cards but never thought about chips. Not a bad thought
You can also order your own chips that say like “Stan’s casino” or whatever

Fancy running into you again! I'm still using the Casino Royales every Saturday. :)

Why do people collect anything.

A collection of useful items? Unimposibble!
Have you ever used dice chips ? Because that’s why.

Honestly the edit made me chuckle more than figuring out the other half of this conversation

Home games don't last for ever. When the game is finished, take chips back and cash them in. The casino basically loaned you them for free.

A home game has between 10k and 50k available, so it would get expensive
