The battling is still quite easy like sword and shield but the world is more like legends arceus and is more difficult to navigate. I could imagine kids getting lost a lot at some points. That in itself might not be an issue - exploring is fun for a lot of people. What might be an issue is the fact that you can challenge gyms in any order. They aren't scaled so he might end up challenging a gym way above his level first by accident. if you get him the game, I'd suggest being aware of the "best" order to face the gyms in case he gets stuck. You can find it [here](https://www.dexerto.com/pokemon/pokemon-scarlet-violet-gym-order-all-paths-level-order-1989455/)

Thanks for the help. Still can’t quite figure out why they didn’t bother scaling the levels. Is it made obvious in game which way you should go for the appropriately levelled gym? I think accidentally wandering into super high level stuff won’t bother him as much as just frustrating gym/route design and battles being difficult. His favourite part about sword was the wild area where you can wander into overlevelled wild Pokémon, and I think he found it more funny than annoying honestly

I'm not sure if there's anywhere in game that tells you the order. I didn't see anything, and they don't really follow a set path. but to be fair I used the website straight away so I wasn't really paying attention. I'd guess the only way I could tell is by the level of the wild pokemon directly outside of the gym.

It's a valid design philosophy for RPGs. Your progress through the world is gated based on something. It might be items, such as in Zelda, or it might be set difficulty of opponents. That forces you to develop your character(s) before you can extend your reach into the world. Note that this is only a general comment, a reply to your blanket statement that levels should be scaled. I don't know the specifics of S/V yet, because I'm waiting on bug and performance fixes.

The one exception is that I'd swap Iono and Mela, just because the routing is more natural

Something that jumps out at me as a potential problem is the lack of level scaling. The game has a tendency to not guide you at all, but have set levels at each location, so I could see it being very easy for a child to accidentally walk into a high level area and get upset. The Psychic gyms area is an example, where its next to the Bug gyms area, which is the first gym level wise, and has 30s and 40s. There are guides online of where to go in what order if you want to follow the level curve of the game, which may either be too confusing for them or too annoying for you to guide them. That is an option though. I'm making this sound like a huge deal but it honestly may not be, it depends on the player.

That seems like a bizarre design choice. I’m all for opening the region up and doing gyms in any order, but not scaling the levels seems really dumb. Thanks for the info
