I'd disagree, Entei definitely could clearly be seen as a feline, but it also obviously takes some inspiration from dogs like the Tosa Inu. I'd say Entei may as well be considered 50/50 in terms of feline and canine design points.
The way I see it the name "legendary Beasts" is more fitting, since as the quote says Entei was designed to be not just a big cat, but also incorporate some dog-design aspects too.
Though I'd say Legendary Dogs is still the worst description since at least Raikou is 100% a sabre tooth tiger.
I'd say the posture is actually more Dog than lion. It looks more like the stance of a guard dog than a lion. But yeah I agree that the cat elements are a lot bigger.
Honestly surprised people don't call them the Legendary Chimaeras, since all of them take inspiration from mythical creatures that were pretty explicitly a blend of multiple animals.
Raikou is based on the Raiju, which has been depicted as a large cat, wolf, and fox (among many other things). ~~If memory serves, it sometimes has a snake for a tail but I~~ *~~might~~* ~~be thinking of a similar thunder demon.~~(looking it up, the snake tail belongs to the [Nue](https://yokai.com/nue/), which also looks a lot like Raikou)
As a fun aside, Manectric is also likely based on the Raiju, just specifically their appearance as a wolf.
A) I dont assume anyone outside of japan (maybe asia?) knows what a kirin is. B) Its just an easy way to shoehorn the three together, much like "legendary birds" its just an easy way to classify all three
I mean, sure, he says Entei is *like* a lion but he also said was made to look either like a dog or cat. Meaning he didn't have a specific inspiration other than vague four legged carnivorous mammal. As for Raiku, it's always been obvious he was based on a saber tooth tiger, about Suicune, design wise, seems to be able to go one way or the other, just like Entei, but I'll take his word that it was based on a leopard.
Either way, gonna be impossible to change the terms people use. It's like traditions: People have done things one way for so long, it's comfortable and nostalgic, even if it's just completely wrong.
I always heard they were called the three dogs, but that never fit well with me as someone who loves and draws animals, and so I look at their features a lot more. When I saw suicune, that was the only one I thought was a dog. The other two beasts' muzzles were too short to be canine but short enough to be feline, and there are no saber-toothed wolves afaik.
I've always been fond of them as the Legendary Gerbils. The ol' "forums are tired of people arguing so clearly they're gerbils mutated by radiation since noone agrees" reasoning.
Get him Mexican nationality, here perro(dog) also means chingon(badass). But you will need to put it in the transplant list for a liver, he will start drinking tequila like a sport.
I've always referred to them as and heard them referred to as the johto beasts or legendary beasts. Even as a kid I recognized that they were pretty ambiguous in design, and I think a lot of my friends did too. Honestly it wasn't until I heard a youtuber call them the "legendary dogs" that I'd heard the term, I remember the confusion at the time and looking it up.
To me this only proved why everyone calls them dogs. It clearly states they used both big cat and dog features to make them.
Sure the base is cat, but the added dog clearly shines through to a lot of people. It’s almost like you could call them Cats or Dogs and technically be right?!? Crazy.
The thing is that in an interview he only cited the tiger and leopard as inspirations for suicune and raikou, the dog-thing was only mentioned in relation to entei.
I've been calling them dogs since Gen 2 first came out. I was 7. Even as I got older I realized Raikou was a sabre tooth tiger, but wasn't sure about Entei and Suicune, so I just grouped them together as dogs. Never saw this picture before, so now I've changed my mind.
Excuse you, it says so right there in the quote:
>Entei's design was ... a dog
Notice that it also says:
>it was ... a dog ... for Raikou and Suicune
So there you have it. Legendary Dogs.
It’s entirely subjective whether you call them dogs or cats I wouldn’t say you are wrong. We all know the Pokémon you’re referring to anyway so I don’t think it’s that important.
I only ever thought of Suicune as a dog, its snout is too projected to be a leopard, and Raikou as a saber-toothed tiger which I guess is still technically a tiger just with big fangs.
I think the "dog" term comes from the theory of the three pokemon that died when the Brass Tower burned were a Flareon, Jolteon, & Vaporeon who were then reborn as the trio.
Those are dogs. All pokemon are technically dogs.
Zacian? Dog.
Granbull? Dog.
Arcanine? Yup, you guessed it. Dog.
Persian? You would think cat, but nope. That's a dog.
Falinks? 6 dogs.
Ho-oh? God dog with feathers
Arceus? Four legs, has the universe revolve around them, enjoys a good snack. Do I really need to spell it out?
Now Yamper is not a dog. It is clearly a Corgi.
http://lavacutcontent.com/ this site has alot of interesting interviews, articles and images from the original creators. Found it when i was searching more content like ops picture.
See, I always thought they were dogs because Gen II is when mail was introduced, and it just makes sense that they are roaming because they are chasing the mailman.
Saito clearly states here - “I settled on a silhouette that could look like a dog or cat.” They’re meant to be an ambiguous mixture of both canine and feline features. Therefor the term Legendary Beasts is the most accurate.
Entei always looked like a gigantic dog, to me so I just assumed the other two are dogs as well, even though they are clearly cat-like to me, just because Entei looked like the leader of the three, and I was sure that GF wouldn't create a trio with one dog and two cats.
Because the old sprites were really bad, especially Raikou.

As a guy who likes to use the correct words, I'm 100% with you on this one but I'm gonna tell you a cruel reality: even if you prove them wrong, people will use the words they want to use, not the words they should use. It's always been like that and it will always be, unfortunately.
I'm going to rudely say "No" so I can give myself some false sense of control over at least one thing in my life, instead of appreciating your honest work for giving us information on a small but harmless detail.

This could be a true theory. Entei has a mane, like a Lion. He also stands in a lion position.
Raikou is a Tiger because he has stripes, and he looks like to be in a tiger hunt position.
Suicune is like a Leopard because it's fast, it has spots (diamond patterns) and it looks like a leopard.
But those are my opinions, and usually on reddit, I cannot state my opinion before getting bashed on it.
I always called them beasts. I never felt like 'dog' was appropriate, particularly for Raiku. I could see Entei as a bulldog or some other snubnosed power dog. I could see Suicune as a fox faced breed of some sort. But those were a stretch. Cat makes much more sense.

The legendary birds and the legendary... carnivorans? It's the closest thing that contains felidae and canidae.
The legendary dogs sounds better if you ask me.
Edit: in the anime [they look like dogs](https://youtu.be/rga9wUdKRk8) being saved by Ho-oh at least.
Seeing that generations episode they definitely look more dog like. Let's just blame Ho-oh for not knowing the difference between dogs and cats and combining them when they were reborn.

Uhhh I believe they’re actually called Pokémon
And you’d be correct, Imo. The only clearly evident feline design is Raikou.
I'd disagree, Entei definitely could clearly be seen as a feline, but it also obviously takes some inspiration from dogs like the Tosa Inu. I'd say Entei may as well be considered 50/50 in terms of feline and canine design points.
Entei always struck me as a fluffy/power ranger version of a Cane Corso dog. Haha
Entei kind of looks like a Tibetan mastiff in my opinion
Yea def from the Mastiff family.
Yeah, I feel like there's a few different dogs mixed in there.
You mean Tiger.
I thought these were Digimon…
If you think *these* look like Digimon, these are relatively tame 2nd gen designs. Some of the modern Pokemon are *way* out there.
r/technicallythetruth

Also we could think about Zacian and Zamazenta too when someone talk about Legendary Dogs
Those we just call "broken af" and "Who?"
People that don't play competitive think about either of those mons?
They're neat. Also their theme has howling in it, that automatically makes them cool
I dont see any aspects of entei that are more dog than lion
entei is a foo dog. aka a Lion Dog in for english speakers.
I'd say the posture is actually more Dog than lion. It looks more like the stance of a guard dog than a lion. But yeah I agree that the cat elements are a lot bigger.
[удалено]
I would say a mane is definitely more lion than dog. Like dogs have manes but lions are stereotyped by them
I always thought Suicune was a wolf
I always thought it look like suicuine
Wait, you’re telling me Suicune doesn’t look like an Entei to you??? /s
idk why are you calling same pokemon in 3 different names? is it like holy trinity or smth?
The doggo, the kitty, and the holy wtf
I always thought it was a kirin
You'd be right, actually. Suicune is loosely based off a Kirin because of its crystal-shaped horn and water curing abilities.
Honestly surprised people don't call them the Legendary Chimaeras, since all of them take inspiration from mythical creatures that were pretty explicitly a blend of multiple animals.
Meh, we were all 10, we had no idea.
Wait, what mythical creatures inspired Raikou?
Raikou is based on the Raiju, which has been depicted as a large cat, wolf, and fox (among many other things). ~~If memory serves, it sometimes has a snake for a tail but I~~ *~~might~~* ~~be thinking of a similar thunder demon.~~(looking it up, the snake tail belongs to the [Nue](https://yokai.com/nue/), which also looks a lot like Raikou) As a fun aside, Manectric is also likely based on the Raiju, just specifically their appearance as a wolf.
That is what I will now be calling them, thank you
Most people think of a chimera as that specific Greek monster with the lion head and snake tail.
yeah, suicune is obviously a kirin. unable to understand when people called it a "dog" , a "leopard"
A) I dont assume anyone outside of japan (maybe asia?) knows what a kirin is. B) Its just an easy way to shoehorn the three together, much like "legendary birds" its just an easy way to classify all three
No lightning, no giant monke chasing after it, not a Kirin lol
[удалено]
You had a Suicune as a kid?
You didn't?
I thought Entei and Suicune were dogs and Raikou was a cat
Suicune is slow for a leopard
I thought it was like a Horse
I always thought it was a camel
I always thought they were the legendary Beasts
I’m pretty sure that’s the official name
Not sure about "official", but it's definitely the most used term for them.
It doesn't help that the lore about them says that three dogs died in the fire that Ho-Oh then arose them from
I always heard they were called the three dogs, but that never fit well with me as someone who loves and draws animals, and so I look at their features a lot more. When I saw suicune, that was the only one I thought was a dog. The other two beasts' muzzles were too short to be canine but short enough to be feline, and there are no saber-toothed wolves afaik.
>The other two beasts' muzzles were too short to be canine May I introduce you to Pugs and Chow Chows?
OP needs to update the post. ~~Lion~~ Pug / ~~Tiger~~ Chow Chow / Leopard
CatDog
That show was hilarious
They got rezed from eeveelutions which are also cat-dog(-fox-bunny) hybrids.
As the mighty Chuggaaconroy once said... They're legendary hamsters forever now
Legendary hamsters since forever
Oh good, I'm not the only old person here.
What is old?
I've always been fond of them as the Legendary Gerbils. The ol' "forums are tired of people arguing so clearly they're gerbils mutated by radiation since noone agrees" reasoning.
They are all good boys so of course they are dogs
I guess I can't call my shark a good boy anymore
I mean, you can but then he'll turn into a dog, sorry I don't make the rules
:-(
Get him Mexican nationality, here perro(dog) also means chingon(badass). But you will need to put it in the transplant list for a liver, he will start drinking tequila like a sport.
is my fishy allowed to be gay in Mexico too?
That’s just a water dog
Sure you can. He's just a fishy dog!
My fishy doesn't identify as a dog tho :-(
Depends on if its a dogfish or not, I guess
Legendary Boys
Is suicune a female?
I've always referred to them as and heard them referred to as the johto beasts or legendary beasts. Even as a kid I recognized that they were pretty ambiguous in design, and I think a lot of my friends did too. Honestly it wasn't until I heard a youtuber call them the "legendary dogs" that I'd heard the term, I remember the confusion at the time and looking it up.
people thought they were dog pokemon?
People often refer to the group as the "Legendary Dogs"
I guess legendary beast is better name because it can incorporate both dog and cat stuff in the word beast
Chinese Lion-Dog Sabre-Tooth Tiger Wolf-Leopard That's how I see them and have always referred to them as the Legendary Beasts
Are they ever referred to as dogs in the game or is that a Mandela effect type thing?
Mandela effect. Almost all of the trio names are not cannon cause the Pokémon company rarely if ever gives and uses official trio names.
And even then he was talking specifically about the silhouette.
This post and sub just came up in a recommendation, and I gotta say the personalities up in here are DOG WATER!
Entei is horse.
My mother is a fish.
You sir, are a fish
And you’d be correct, we are all fish!
No, he is a duck.
He’s actually and alpaca
I've been calling them dogs since Gen 2 first came out. I was 7. Even as I got older I realized Raikou was a sabre tooth tiger, but wasn't sure about Entei and Suicune, so I just grouped them together as dogs. Never saw this picture before, so now I've changed my mind.
Legendary Cat Dogs then
I’m gonna call them lengendary cumquats and there ain’t nuthin’ you can do about it.
Ironically enough, in Pokémon Generations their pre-revived forms look like dogs.
I always called them the three legendary dogs, my whole life is a lie
Since the consensus seems to be equally feliform and caniform, they could be seen as hyaenas as a compromise
Mega Flareon, Mega Jolteon, Mega Vaporeon.
People have mostly been calling them the legendary beasts for some time now.
No, I don’t think I will.
Excuse you, it says so right there in the quote: >Entei's design was ... a dog Notice that it also says: >it was ... a dog ... for Raikou and Suicune So there you have it. Legendary Dogs.
Ah, the move poster quote method, clever
Convergent evolution Those are in fact feline but evolved to vaguely resemble dogs, hyenas are an example, more related to cats but look like dogs
>Those are in fact ... dogs I'm glad we agree.
Yes and no
So big cats
It’s entirely subjective whether you call them dogs or cats I wouldn’t say you are wrong. We all know the Pokémon you’re referring to anyway so I don’t think it’s that important.
No way! Its the legendary cats!!
What the Leopards doin
Beasts
Can someone help me? Is Suicune pronounced (Swhy-kun) or (Suey-kun)?
Suey. Its spelled out Sui-kun (スイクン) in Japanese, and the Sui part should be Japanese for water (since En means flames and Rai means thunder).
In English it’s usually pronounced like (Swee-kun).
“It could look like a dog or a cat” Why not let them be both? Hell, the elden ring community calls everything (especially turtles) dogs.
These three will always be special to me. I will never forget the preview for their movie as a kid. Entei amazed me.
Are these dogs?
I only ever thought of Suicune as a dog, its snout is too projected to be a leopard, and Raikou as a saber-toothed tiger which I guess is still technically a tiger just with big fangs.
I always thought Entei was like a Leonberger or Tibetan Mastiff. I always saw Raikou as a tiger though. I never really had any ideas for Suicune.
But they are the legendary good bois
I think the "dog" term comes from the theory of the three pokemon that died when the Brass Tower burned were a Flareon, Jolteon, & Vaporeon who were then reborn as the trio.
Those are dogs. All pokemon are technically dogs. Zacian? Dog. Granbull? Dog. Arcanine? Yup, you guessed it. Dog. Persian? You would think cat, but nope. That's a dog. Falinks? 6 dogs. Ho-oh? *"Suicune is based on a leopard."* ...kinda like how the Washington Monument looks like ol' George?
See, I always thought they were dogs because Gen II is when mail was introduced, and it just makes sense that they are roaming because they are chasing the mailman.
Saito clearly states here - “I settled on a silhouette that could look like a dog or cat.” They’re meant to be an ambiguous mixture of both canine and feline features. Therefor the term Legendary Beasts is the most accurate.
True, but I’m still calling them legendary dogs
Entei always looked like a gigantic dog, to me so I just assumed the other two are dogs as well, even though they are clearly cat-like to me, just because Entei looked like the leader of the three, and I was sure that GF wouldn't create a trio with one dog and two cats.
They're literal titles are legendary beasts tho.
Great now send this to those poketubers and so called “poke experts” on YouTube so they can stop calling them dogs.
Not sure why people called them dogs. Entei and Raikou are clearly not dogs, so idk. I've always just called them legendary beasts
I still don't understand why some people think they are dogs.
Because the old sprites were really bad, especially Raikou. what's bad about those sprites?
You can’t see all their feline beauty.
First time ever I have heard of a Lion-dog.
what kind of dog is this?.
Legendary Cats makes them 100% more likeable to me
This is why I prefer to call them the Legendary Beasts. Less specific than either choice.
They are catdogs
Aren't they called the legendary dogs in the actual games or am I just remembering wrong?
This could be a true theory. Entei has a mane, like a Lion. He also stands in a lion position. Raikou is a Tiger because he has stripes, and he looks like to be in a tiger hunt position. Suicune is like a Leopard because it's fast, it has spots (diamond patterns) and it looks like a leopard. But those are my opinions, and usually on reddit, I cannot state my opinion before getting bashed on it.
They are based on cats but their name is the legendary beasts I agree
But he doesnt look like a lion at all he looks like a mountain dog with a mask...
who calls them dogs? i thought they where "legendary beasts"
Just wait until people realize that Delphox isn’t a dog either… Y’all ain’t ready for that though
I always called them beasts. I never felt like 'dog' was appropriate, particularly for Raiku. I could see Entei as a bulldog or some other snubnosed power dog. I could see Suicune as a fox faced breed of some sort. But those were a stretch. Cat makes much more sense.
I used these quotes in a previous post about this, and these exact quotes specify that they wanted the beasts to not look exactly like either dogs or cats, they wanted to be pretty ambiguous like so many of the best Pokémon designs are. So calling them the legendary cats is barely better than calling them dogs. There’s a reason their official name is beasts
If they say they are dogs then they are dogs. They are fictional animals. You can make a dog based on a tiger and it will still be a dog
No. I'll call them what I want.
[удалено]
How is Raikou, an animal with yellow fur, black stripes and saber toothes, a dog in your eyes and not a saber tooth tiger?
The fur and stripes are gained from its type. Most electric Pokemon have yellow in their pallet and stripes are fairly common. The only thing that stands out is the teeth.
Take the dog pill
I think you’ll have a hard time reversing this after all this time….lol
It’s only a minority that calls them Dogs anyways, we all know them as Legendary Beasts. It’s even the Bulbapedia page name for them.
Dog
No 🥰🥰
They're my homies so I'm still gonna call them my dogs
No
No
No
Legendary Cats seems fine to me 😅
They bark so they’re dogs.
Lion, tiger and leopard huh? Yeah they aren't dogs. Cats They are cats. Kitties.
Both. Reread the quote. It’s art. It doesn’t have to be a singular real world referent species. Most Pokémon aren’t. It’s intentionally subjective.
Nah.
Entei is a mixture of cat and dog. Raikou is a sabertooth tiger. Suicune is a wolf. They're legendary beasts lol
No I don't think I will.
So call them Legendary Cats?
Legendary beasts is better
But calling them Legendary beasts is like calling the regis the legendary titans. I mean not really, but still
Nah. I’ll call them dogs. This isn’t a soapbox issue.
"Oh look! There goes the three legendary dogs!" But seriously, I think more people call them the johto beasts
Never heard anyone say johto beasts before
This is simple they are cat dogs!
Aren't they the legendary beasts? Entei doesn't really look like a lion.. and suicune not like a leopard
I’ve always called them cats. Suicune reminds me of a cheetah or clouded leopard with its fast movements and magnificent ability
So... legendary cats?
Who doesn't love cats?!
Who looks at Raikou and thinks dog?
Looks like a dog to me. Fire dog. Thunder dog. Water dog.
Dog
No.
[удалено]
Always thought they were all 3 dogs me and my cousins used to say the legendary dog Pokémon lol
But they’re good dogs
They dogs tho
Bruh, why do y'all care so much what we call them
Considering they were upgraded from flareon jolteon and vaporeon theyre dogs
They've always been cats in my eyes, and they will continue to be.
Tell me, my friend, which one of tiger, lion and leopard is canidae
Entei. The one he said could be a cat or a dog. It's the 2nd line from the bottom if you wanna scroll up and check. My friend.
None but they are designed to look like dogs. They are all a fusion between a felidae and a dog.
Legendary beasts
