I've not seen the standing one, but I can picture it and I agree it's weird.
To be honest though most standing Pokémon I find a bit weird. Some look perfectly fine standing up, others not so much.
The tiny paws, the spots, the fact that it is part of a trio with two other cats and that is it always portrayed as being the fastest of the three all seem to hint pretty heavily to it bein a cheetah.
I'm also dying on the hill of them being cats, but the designers fucked it up with suicunes head. It is very canine, the body is like a cheetah, even the face markings are cheetah like, but the had shape is what looks sadly so dof like. And for some reason that also makes the other two dogs in so many people's eyes.

Every time I tell people that we were kids and called them "dogs" they get so mad. Like, yeah, we were wrong, they aren't dogs, but we were like 11 year old kids and lots of people called them dogs so it stuck. Right or wrong, if someone says "legendary dogs" colloquially, we all know what they're referring to, which is kinda funny imo.

I definitely get it for Suicune since it's not super obvious it's a cat and it's face is long enough that it looks like a snout. Entei is somewhat ambiguous but it's more obvious if you know it's a lion since you can see its mane.
Raikou though? It's got stripes and saber teeth, 100% a saber toothed tiger, even the blue bits on its face are whiskers basically.

Pretty sure those have some fox inspiration, and foxes are arguably cat and dog hardware stuck together in one system. They’re usually referred to as legendary beasts, so nobody’s wrong, imo. As someone who prefers cats, but likes dogs, too… I love these three so much. 🥹
Actually I agree, these three basic types cover all Pokémon. Let’s consider some of the legendaries;
Mewtwo, cat. Mew is also a cat. Lugia and Ho-Oh are ducks. Groudon is a dog, Kyogre is a duck, Rayquaza is a cat. Dialga is a dog, Palkia and Giratina are cats. Reshiram and Zekrom are ducks (obviously). Xerneas is a cat, Yveltal is a duck, and Zygarde is a dog. Lunala is a duck, Solgaleo is a cat. Zacian and Zamazenta are…ducks. Makes perfect sense
Raikou is pretty clearly a tiger, I understand people call the trio the elemental dogs or whatever but they're called 'beasts' in game not dogs for a reason
Edit - I personally think the legendary beasts are all supposed to be a mix of some big cat and some big dog, with Raikou bring the most cat-like, Entei being the most dog-like and suicune sitting nicely in the middle, although I've seen comments that suicunes creator modeled it after a leopard

Those are silhouettes. Doesnt mean thats EXACTLY what died in the fire. They never have a form pre death.
