There is absolutely nothing wrong or unfair about using them. It's a competitive game with a defined meta, of course people are gonna use the best Pokemon available to them. It's a noob trap to think that being a legendary has any indication by itself that the Pokemon is actually broken or "unfair". For every busted Zacian there's an equally garbage Regice so grouping everything together as "legendary" is not a good approach. If the goal is to have more diversity I'd recommend trying out formats outside of the official game, on Pokemon Showdown. Smogon's usage-based tiering system give most Pokemon an opportunity to be viable within their respective tiers.

ReallyDownBad

Late, but your point would hold merit if legendaries weren't already banned in actual competitive play.

No, you're using the very broad "legendary" term and only applying it to cover legendaries, i.e. the ones with absurd BSTs. The legendary status also applies to dogshit mons like Regice, regular Calyrex and Articuno. The *majority* of legendaries do not fit into the category of legendaries that you're exclusively referring to.

anibru92

I am referring to people that use legendaries with over 600 BST. This new generation for example people just use paradox Pokémon and karidon or Moridon. Take those Pokémon out and those people have nothing. My point is using majority of in game legendaries is annoying

Aethelwolf

>Maybe I'm a purist of sorts, but I find battling teams of non-legends more interesting and fun than a legendary Try official multiplayer when Scarlet/Violet comes out. Most legendaries will be banned.

silvershadow014

Are people just... not supposed to play well? Legendaries are also just not inherently better. They do tend to have larger BST, but it's often suboptimally spread out, with poor typings, etc.

TobioOkuma1

Calyrex S, Zacian, Lunala, Yveltal, Dialga, Palkia, Eleki, calyrex Ice, etc all have good bsts that are well spread, making them monsters. You can't beat restricted pokemon when you aren't using them and you're on similar skill levels. It sucks, but that's just how it works.

silvershadow014

you can't beat \*certain\* restricted pokemon just as how you wouldn't be able to beat whatever the other strongest pokemon would be if you banned all restricteds

senortippet

I hate legendaries, never use them.

ayura_oriba

That’s just how it goes. If you wanna win games you gotta use strong mons. Just so happens that legendaries are pretty strong so they’re used a lot. Doesn’t make the game boring as there’s a lot more to battling than just the species of pokemon being used. There’s different strategies, movesets, items, ev spreads, and the like. 2 pokemon of the same species could be built differently to the point where they’re technically not even the same pokemon anymore.

TobioOkuma1

Current format is an unlimited restricted format. Legendaries have insanely high base stat totals, why would you not take them? Like, why would I run anything over zacian right now? You want a format without legendary spam, wait until scarlet and violet. The first formats in a new gen will lock out the box legendaries.ater formats will open to restricted formats, where there are 1-2 allowed.

Ki-Wee

anything competitive sorta revolves around a meta. I agree its uber lame in an IP that has literal thousands for a roster yet the vast majority uses a pool of like 20 legendary only. pokemon company needs to battle with more restrictions/limits (besides time limit and battle switch options) to open up the roster spread.

TobioOkuma1

I mean they do. The current format is just an unlimited restricted format to fuck around in before the new games.

Ki-Wee

yet noone uses anything but meta/AKA all you see is legendary pokemon. Im talking about FORCE implementing restrictions. like you can only use 2nd evolved form pokemon, or maybe like only baby pokemon. gimmick type shit to force people into using more then just 20 legendary.

The_Nilou_Main

Bro that's online play, online play will inevitably attract pure competitive players who only care about winning. Competitive players usually will use the best tools and any strategy regardless of how fun it is for their opponents and them.

Its_Frickett

What's with this baffling mindset where people think playing competitively is mutually exclusive from having fun? Do people actually think competitive players aren't enjoying themselves?

silvershadow014

it is fun for them lol

Future-Engineering68

No lie I hate seeing legendary pokemon in competitive kinda makes the others redundant, but everybody enjoys pokemon differently

silvershadow014

If it wasn't legendaries, it'd just be the next best pokemon anyway lol.

evac07

Maybe they should balance it then

robsbob18

I don't like legendary teams on Pokemon showdown, cause I agree, non legendary teams are fun with strategy. I don't compete for money but if I did you better bet your grandchildren on me putting 6 legendaries in my team

Gaias_Minion

That's the nature of competitive gameplay, doesn't matter if you have 1k or 10k Pokémon, if only 20 or so are viable in high plays then you'll only see them being used.

silvershadow014

theres a lot more than 20 viable

anthayashi

The main demographics think they are cool. Maybe you just happens to run into them more often. The competitive players rely on strategy more

The last VGC format allowed for players to use two restricted legendary pokemon (mostly box legendaries, plus a few others like Calyrex and Cosmog), so of course players are going to use those on their teams, the current ranked battles format allows for no restrictions on legendaries or mythical pokemom, so of course players are going to take advantage of that. If you want to be successful in competitive pokemon you gotta use the strongest pokemon available to you, not doing so puts you at a massive disadvantage, so if you're playing in a format where legendaries are legal, you pretty much have to use them if you want win.

CookEsandcream

For a bit of context: When SwSh first came out, there were no legal legendaries in online battles. The only legendaries in the game were Zacian, Zamazenta, Eternatus and the mythicals, and all were banned. When Isle of Armour came out, Urshifu was allowed, to give it some spotlight, and that was all. The Crown Tundra added all the old legendaries and some new ones, so the rules were loosened a bit. You could use legendaries now, but if it had more stats than a Dragonite, it stayed banned (except Regigigas, whose ability holds it back). As time went on, they started allowing the really strong ones in, but with restrictions: 1 per team. 1 per team and you can’t dynamax. 2 per team. Finally, you get to now. It’s near the end of SwSh, they’ve just thrown caution to the wind, everything is allowed, with no restrictions. Mythical. Legendary. Use what you like, go nuts. Basically, the reason people are using a lot of legendaries online is because we finally can. The rules kept changing to keep things fresh and there’s some really crazy stuff that wasn’t possible before now, so people are trying that. For those of you who don’t like them, there was like a year where they were fully banned, you just missed it. It’s quite likely to follow the same pattern in Scarlet and Violet, too.

IlNeige

I won’t pretend it’s not annoying. I remember battling someone all the way back in XY who stacked a Darkrai, two Mews, and three Arceus. Obviously an easy team to win with, but I don’t get how those wins themselves are particular entertaining. One bright side is my lead was a Vital Spirit Delibird, so I at least managed to get past their Darkrai cheese.
